ORACL: Optimized Reasoning for Autoscaling via Chain of Thought with LLMs for Microservices

Applications are moving away from monolithic designs to microservice and serverless architectures, where fleets of lightweight and independently deployable components run on public clouds. Autoscaling serves as the primary control mechanism for balancing resource utilization and quality of service, yet existing policies are either opaque learned models that require substantial per-deployment training or brittle hand-tuned rules that fail to generalize. We investigate whether large language models can act as universal few-shot resource allocators that adapt across rapidly evolving microservice deployments. We propose ORACL, Optimized Reasoning for Autoscaling via Chain of Thought with LLMs for Microservices, a framework that leverages prior knowledge and chain-of-thought reasoning to diagnose performance regressions and recommend resource allocations. ORACL transforms runtime telemetry, including pods, replicas, CPU and memory usage, latency, service-level objectives, and fault signals, into semantic natural-language state descriptions and invokes an LLM to produce an interpretable intermediate reasoning trace. This reasoning identifies likely root causes, prunes the action space, and issues safe allocation decisions under policy constraints. Experiments on representative open-source microservice workloads show that ORACL improves root-cause identification accuracy by 15 percent, accelerates training by up to 24x, and improves quality of service by 6 percent in short-term scenarios, without deployment-specific retraining.

Phase engineering of 1T$'$ and 1T CrS2 and Cr2S3 by MOCVD

Layered Cr-chalcogenides compounds offer a rich range of crystal phases with different magnetic properties some of which have been predicted only but not experimentally verified. Here we demonstrate a previously unreported crystal phase of CrS2, namely the distorted octahedral (1T$'$) structure, synthesized via metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD). We achieved the tuneable synthesis of either 1T$'$ or 1T phase CrS2. The structure were identified using polarized Raman spectroscopy, density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), as well as scanning electron diffraction (4D-STEM). 4D-STEM reveals that 1T$'$ crystals grow from an originally nucleated kinetically favoured 1T phase which then transform into the thermodynamically stable 1T$'$ phase. Magneto-optic Kerr imaging reveals that the 1T$'$ CrS2 crystals have soft ferromagnetic nature at low temperature. Our MOCVD growth of complex phases of 2D CrS2 with long-range magnetic order paves the way for the scalable synthesis of 2D magnets for ultrathin magnetic memories for logic-in-memory applications and spintronics.

CXR-AD: Component X-ray Image Dataset for Industrial Anomaly Detection

Internal defect detection constitutes a critical process in ensuring component quality, for which anomaly detection serves as an effective solution. However, existing anomaly detection datasets predominantly focus on surface defects in visible-light images, lacking publicly available X-ray datasets targeting internal defects in components. To address this gap, we construct the first publicly accessible component X-ray anomaly detection (CXR-AD) dataset, comprising real-world X-ray images. The dataset covers five industrial component categories, including 653 normal samples and 561 defect samples with precise pixel-level mask annotations. We systematically analyze the dataset characteristics and identify three major technical challenges: (1) strong coupling between complex internal structures and defect regions, (2) inherent low contrast and high noise interference in X-ray imaging, and (3) significant variations in defect scales and morphologies. To evaluate dataset complexity, we benchmark three state-of-the-art anomaly detection frameworks (feature-based, reconstruction-based, and zero-shot learning methods). Experimental results demonstrate a 29.78% average performance degradation on CXR-AD compared to MVTec AD, highlighting the limitations of current algorithms in handling internal defect detection tasks. To the best of our knowledge, CXR-AD represents the first publicly available X-ray dataset for component anomaly detection, providing a real-world industrial benchmark to advance algorithm development and enhance precision in internal defect inspection technologies.

DRPC: Distributed Reinforcement Learning Approach for Scalable Resource Provisioning in Container-based Clusters

Microservices have transformed monolithic applications into lightweight, self-contained, and isolated application components, establishing themselves as a dominant paradigm for application development and deployment in public clouds such as Google and Alibaba. Autoscaling emerges as an efficient strategy for managing resources allocated to microservices' replicas. However, the dynamic and intricate dependencies within microservice chains present challenges to the effective management of scaled microservices. Additionally, the centralized autoscaling approach can encounter scalability issues, especially in the management of large-scale microservice-based clusters. To address these challenges and enhance scalability, we propose an innovative distributed resource provisioning approach for microservices based on the Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm. This approach enables effective autoscaling decisions and decentralizes responsibilities from a central node to distributed nodes. Comparative results with state-of-the-art approaches, obtained from a realistic testbed and traces, indicate that our approach reduces the average response time by 15% and the number of failed requests by 24%, validating improved scalability as the number of requests increases.

Ultra-clean assembly of van der Waals heterostructures

Layer-by-layer assembly of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures underpins new discoveries in solid state physics, material science and chemistry. Despite the successes, all current 2D material (2DM) transfer techniques rely on the use of polymers which limit the cleanliness, ultimate electronic performance, and potential for optoelectronic applications of the heterostructures. In this article, we present a novel polymer-free platform for rapid and facile heterostructure assembly which utilises re-usable flexible silicon nitride membranes. We demonstrate that this allows fast and reproducible production of 2D heterostructures using both exfoliated and CVD-grown materials with perfect interfaces free from interlayer contamination and correspondingly excellent electronic behaviour, limited only by the size and intrinsic quality of the crystals used. Furthermore, removing the need for polymeric carriers allows new possibilities for vdW heterostructure fabrication: assembly at high temperatures up to 600°C, and in different environments including ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and when the materials are fully submerged in liquids. We demonstrate UHV heterostructure assembly for the first time, and show the reliable creation of graphene moiré superlattices with more than an order of magnitude improvement in their structural homogeneity. We believe that broad adaptation of our novel inorganic 2D materials assembly strategy will allow realisation of the full potential of vdW heterostructures as a platform for new physics and advanced optoelectronic technologies.
