Hybrid Quantum Annealing via Molecular Dynamics

A novel quantum-classical hybrid scheme is proposed to efficiently solve large-scale combinatorial optimization problems. The key concept is to introduce a Hamiltonian dynamics of the classical flux variables associated with the quantum spins of the transverse-field Ising model. Molecular dynamics of the classical fluxes can be used as a powerful preconditioner to sort out the frozen and ambivalent spins for quantum annealers. The performance and accuracy of our smooth hybridization in comparison to the standard classical algorithms (the tabu search and the simulated annealing) are demonstrated by employing the MAX-CUT and Ising spin-glass problems.

Nuclear energy density functionals from empirical ground-state densities

A model is developed, based on the density functional perturbation theory and the inverse Kohn-Sham method, that can be used to improve relativistic nuclear energy density functionals towards an exact but unknown Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation functional. The improved functional is determined by empirical exact ground-state densities of finite systems. A test of the model and an illustrative calculation are performed, starting from two different approximate functionals, to reproduce the parameters and density dependence of a target functional, using exact ground-state densities of symmetric N=Z systems.

Relativistic density functional theory with finite-light-speed correction for the Coulomb interaction: a non-relativistic-reduction based approach

The Breit correction, the finite-light-speed correction for the Coulomb interaction of the electron-electron interaction in $ O \left( 1/ c^2 \right) $, is introduced to density functional theory (DFT) based on the non-relativistic reduction with the local density approximation. Using this newly developed relativistic DFT, it is found that the possible outer-most electron of lawrencium atom is the $ p $ orbital instead of the $ d $ orbital, which is consistent with the previous calculations based on wave-function theory. A possible explanation of the anomalous behavior of its first ionization energy is also given. This DFT scheme provides a practical calculation method for the study of properties of super-heavy elements.

Effects of finite nucleon size, vacuum polarization, and electromagnetic spin-orbit interaction on nuclear binding energies and radii in spherical nuclei

The electromagnetic effects of the finite size of the nucleon are implemented self-consistently on top of the Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculation, where the electric form factors of both protons and neutrons are considered. Furthermore, the vacuum polarization and the electromagnetic spin-orbit interaction are taken into account. The self-consistent finite-size effects give a different Coulomb potential from the conventional one and affect the neutrons as well. The contribution of the finite-size effects to the total energy reaches $ 7 \, \mathrm{MeV} $ in $ {}^{208} \mathrm{Pb} $. The vacuum polarization and the electromagnetic spin-orbit interaction are also non-negligible, especially in the heavy nuclei. These effects provide a comparable contribution of the total energy to that of the isospin symmetry-breaking terms of the nuclear interaction. The mirror nuclei mass difference in $ {}^{48} \mathrm{Ca} $--$ {}^{48} \mathrm{Ni} $ is also studied, and its value is improved by approximately one order of magnitude.

Non-relativistic expansion of Dirac equation with spherical scalar and vector potentials by reconstituted Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation

Inspired by the reconstituted similarity renormalization group method, the reconstituted Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation is proposed. Applied to the Dirac equation in the covariant density functional theory, the reconstituted FW transformation shows a fast convergence of the spectrum of the single-particle energy. The single-particle densities and the single-particle scalar densities obtained by this new method are also investigated. In particular, the relativistic corrections to the densities from the picture-change error between the Schrödinger and Dirac pictures are discussed in detail. Taking these relativistic corrections into account, both the single-particle densities and the single-particle scalar densities are almost identical to their exact values.

Improvement of functionals in density functional theory by the inverse Kohn--Sham method and density functional perturbation theory

We propose a way to improve energy density functionals (EDFs) in the density functional theory based on the combination of the inverse Kohn--Sham method and the density functional perturbation theory. Difference between the known EDF and the exact one is treated as the first-order perturbation. As benchmark calculations, we reproduce the theoretical exchange and correlation functionals in the local density approximation. Systems of noble-gas atoms are used for benchmark calculations, and the ground-state energies and densities, as well as the functionals, are reproduced with good accuracies.

Towards an ab initio covariant density functional for nuclear structure

Nuclear structure models built from phenomenological mean fields, the effective nucleon-nucleon interactions (or Lagrangians), and the realistic bare nucleon-nucleon interactions are reviewed. The success of covariant density functional theory (CDFT) to describe nuclear properties and its influence on Brueckner theory within the relativistic framework are focused upon. The challenges and ambiguities of predictions for unstable nuclei without data or for high-density nuclear matter, arising from relativistic density functionals, are discussed. The basic ideas in building an ab initio relativistic density functional for nuclear structure from ab initio calculations with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions for both nuclear matter and finite nuclei are presented. The current status of fully self-consistent relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) calculations for finite nuclei or neutron drops (ideal systems composed of a finite number of neutrons and confined within an external field) is reviewed. The guidance and perspectives towards an ab initio covariant density functional theory for nuclear structure derived from the RBHF results are provided.

Coulomb Energy Density Functionals for Nuclear Systems: Recent Studies of Coulomb Exchange and Correlation Functionals

The Coulomb exchange and correlation energy density functionals for electron systems are applied to nuclear systems. It is found that the exchange functionals in the generalized gradient approximation provide agreements with the exact-Fock energy with one adjustable parameter within a few dozen $ \mathrm{keV} $ accuracy, whereas the correlation functionals are not directly applicable to nuclear systems due to the existence of the nuclear force.

Non-relativistic expansion of single-nucleon Dirac equation: Comparison between Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and similarity renormalization group

By following the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac equation, we work out the exact analytic expressions up to the $1/M^4$ order for the general cases in the covariant density functional theory. These results are further compared with the corresponding ones derived from another novel non-relativistic expansion method, the similarity renormalization group (SRG). Based on that, the origin of the difference between the results obtained by the FW transformation and SRG method is explored.

Non-relativistic expansion of Dirac equation with spherical scalar and vector potentials by similarity renormalization group

By following the conventional similarity renormalization group (SRG) expansion of the Dirac equation developed in [J.-Y. Guo, Phys. Rev. C \textbf{85}, 021302 (2012)], we work out the analytic expression of the ${1}/{M^4}$ order and verify the convergence of this method. As a step further, the reconstituted SRG method is proposed by using the re-summation technique. The speed of convergence of the reconstituted SRG becomes much faster than the conventional one, and the single-particle densities with the reconstituted SRG are also almost identical to the exact values.

Coulomb exchange functional with generalized gradient approximation for self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations

We perform the self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculation with the Coulomb exchange functional in the form of generalized gradient approximation (GGA). It is found that the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof GGA (PBE-GGA) Coulomb exchange functional is able to reproduce the exact-Fock energy for the nuclei in a large region of the nuclear chart with one adjustable parameter. The remaining error of Coulomb exchange energy by the GGA with respect to the exact-Fock energy dominantly comes from the functional-driven error.

Quantitative analysis of tensor effects in the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory

Tensor force is identified in each meson-nucleon coupling in the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory. It is found that all the meson-nucleon couplings, except the $σ$-scalar one, give rise to the tensor force. The effects of tensor force on various nuclear properties can now be investigated quantitatively, which allows fair and direct comparisons with the corresponding results in the non-relativistic framework. The tensor effects on nuclear binding energies and the evolutions of the $Z,\,N = 8,\,20$, and $28$ magic gaps are studied. The tensor contributions to the binding energies are shown to be tiny in general. The $Z,\,N = 8$ and $20$ gaps are sensitive to the tensor force, but the $Z,\,N = 28$ gaps are not.

High precision nuclear mass predictions towards a hundred kilo-electron-volt accuracy

Mass is a fundamental property and an important fingerprint of atomic nucleus. It provides an extremely useful test ground for nuclear models and is crucial to understand energy generation in stars as well as the heavy elements synthesized in stellar explosions. Nuclear physicists have been attempting at developing a precise, reliable, and predictive nuclear model that is suitable for the whole nuclear chart, while this still remains a great challenge even in recent days. Here we employ the Fourier spectral analysis to examine the deviations of nuclear mass predictions to the experimental data and to present a novel way for accurate nuclear mass predictions. In this analysis, we map the mass deviations from the space of nucleon number to its conjugate space of frequency, and are able to pin down the main contributions to the model deficiencies. By using the radial basis function approach we can further isolate and quantify the sources. Taking a pedagogical mass model as an example, we examine explicitly the correlation between nuclear effective interactions and the distributions of mass deviations in the frequency domain. The method presented in this work, therefore, opens up a new way for improving the nuclear mass predictions towards a hundred kilo-electron-volt accuracy, which is argued to be the chaos-related limit for the nuclear mass predictions.

Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory for neutron drops

Neutron drops confined in an external field are studied in the framework of relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory using the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. The ground state energies and radii of neutron drops with even numbers from $N = 4$ to $N=50$ are calculated and compared with results obtained from other nonrelativistic \textit{ab initio} calculations and from relativistic density functional theory. Special attention has been paid to the magic numbers and to the sub-shell closures. The single-particle energies are investigated and the monopole effect of the tensor force on the evolutions of the spin-orbit and the pseudospin-orbit splittings is discussed. The results provide interesting insight of neutron rich systems and can form an important guide for future density functionals.

Application of Coulomb energy density functional for atomic nuclei: Case studies of local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation

We test the Coulomb exchange and correlation energy density functionals of electron systems for atomic nuclei in the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). For the exchange Coulomb energies, it is found that the deviation between the LDA and GGA ranges from around $ 11 \, \% $ in $ {}^{4} \mathrm{He} $ to around $ 2.2 \, \% $ in $ {}^{208} \mathrm{Pb} $, by taking the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional as an example of the GGA\@. For the correlation Coulomb energies, it is shown that those functionals of electron systems are not suitable for atomic nuclei.

Spin symmetry in the Dirac sea derived from the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction

The spin symmetry in the Dirac sea has been investigated with relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory using the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. Taking the nucleus $^{16}$O as an example and comparing the theoretical results with the data, the definition of the single-particle potential in the Dirac sea is studied in detail. It is found that if the single-particle states in the Dirac sea are treated as occupied states, the ground state properties are in better agreement with experimental data. Moreover, in this case, the spin symmetry in the Dirac sea is better conserved and it is more consistent with the findings using phenomenological relativistic density functionals.

Effects of Tensor Force in the Relativistic Scheme: A Case Study of Neutron Drops

Tensor force is an important component in the nucleon-nucleon interaction, nevertheless, the role of the tensor force in the spin properties in finite nuclei is much less clear. In this report, we mainly focus on our recent progress on this topic about the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory and the corresponding tensor effects on the spin-orbit splittings in neutron drops. This will serve as an important guide for future microscopic derivations of the relativistic and non-relativistic nuclear energy density functionals.
