Pressure induced metallization and loss of surface magnetism in FeSi

Single crystalline FeSi samples with a conducting surface state (CSS) were studied under high pressure ($\textit{P}$) and magnetic field ($\textit{B}$) by means of electrical resistance ($\textit{R}$) measurements to explore how the bulk semiconducting state and the surface state are tuned by the application of pressure. We found that the energy gap ($Δ$) associated with the semiconducting bulk phase begins to close abruptly at a critical pressure ($P_{cr}$) of ~10 GPa and the bulk material becomes metallic with no obvious sign of any emergent phases or non-Fermi liquid behavior in $\textit{R}$($\textit{T}$) in the neighborhood of $P_{cr}$ above 3 K. Moreover, the metallic phase appears to remain at near-ambient pressure upon release of the pressure. Interestingly, the hysteresis in the $\textit{R}$($\textit{T}$) curve associated with the magnetically ordered CSS decreases with pressure and vanishes at $P_{cr}$, while the slope of the $\textit{R}$($\textit{B}$) curve, d$\textit{R}$/d$\textit{B}$, which has a negative value for $\textit{P}$ < $P_{cr}$, decreases in magnitude with $\textit{P}$ and changes sign at $P_{cr}$. Thus, the CSS and the corresponding two-dimensional magnetic order collapse at $P_{cr}$ where the energy gap $Δ$ of the bulk material starts to close abruptly, revealing the connection between the CSS and the semiconducting bulk state in FeSi.

Electrically Programmable Pixelated Graphene-Integrated Plasmonic Metasurfaces for Coherent Mid-Infrared Emission

Active metasurfaces have recently emerged as compact, lightweight, and efficient platforms for dynamic control of electromagnetic fields and optical responses. However, the complexities associated with their post-fabrication tunability significantly hinder their widespread applications, especially for the mid-infrared range due to material scarcity and design intricacy. Here, we experimentally demonstrate highly dynamic, pixelated modulations of coherent mid-infrared emission based on an electrically programmable plasmonic metasurface integrated with graphene field effect transistors (Gr-FETs). The ultrabroad infrared transparency of graphene allows for free-form control over plasmonic meta-atoms, thus achieving coherent mid-infrared states across a broad range of wavelengths and polarizations. The spatial temperature modulation generated by Gr-FETs is effectively synergized with the emissivity control by the localized surface plasmon polaritons from gold nanoantennas. This integrated temperature-emissivity modulation of metasurfaces is systematically extended to form a pixelated 2D array, envisioning new approaches toward scalable 2D electrical wiring for densely packed, independently controlled pixels.

The inversion number of dijoins and blow-up digraphs

For an oriented graph $D$, the $inversion$ of $X \subseteq V(D)$ in $D$ is the digraph obtained from $D$ by reversing the direction of all arcs with both ends in $X$. The inversion number of $D$, denoted by $inv(D)$, is the minimum number of inversions needed to transform $D$ into an acyclic digraph. In this paper, we first show that $inv (\overrightarrow{C_3} \Rightarrow D)= inv(D) +1$ for any oriented graph $\textit{D}$ with even inversion number $inv(D)$, where the dijoin $\overrightarrow{C_3} \Rightarrow D$ is the oriented graph obtained from the disjoint union of $\overrightarrow{C_3}$ and $D$ by adding all arcs from $\overrightarrow{C_3}$ to $D$. Thus we disprove the conjecture of Aubian el at. \cite{2212.09188} and the conjecture of Alon el at. \cite{2212.11969}. We also study the blow-up graph which is an oriented graph obtained from a tournament by replacing all vertices into oriented graphs. We construct a tournament $T$ with order $n$ and $inv(T)=\frac{n}{3}+1$ using blow-up graphs.

Layered Kagome Compound Na$_2$Ni$_3$S$_4$ with Topological Flat Band

We report structural and electronic properties of Na$_2$Ni$_3$S$_4$, a quasi-two-dimensional compound composed of alternating layers of [Ni$_3$S$_4$]$^{2-}$ and Na$^{+}$. The compound features a remarkable Ni-based kagome lattice with a square planar configuration of four surrounding S atoms for each Ni atom. Magnetization and electrical measurements reveal a weak paramagnetic insulator with a gap of about 0.5 eV. Our band structure calculation highlights a set of topological flat bands of the kagome lattice derived from the rotated d$_{xz}$-orbital with $C_\mathrm{3}$ + $T$ symmetry in the presence of crystal-field splitting.

You Only Scan Once: A Dynamic Scene Reconstruction Pipeline for 6-DoF Robotic Grasping of Novel Objects

In the realm of robotic grasping, achieving accurate and reliable interactions with the environment is a pivotal challenge. Traditional methods of grasp planning methods utilizing partial point clouds derived from depth image often suffer from reduced scene understanding due to occlusion, ultimately impeding their grasping accuracy. Furthermore, scene reconstruction methods have primarily relied upon static techniques, which are susceptible to environment change during manipulation process limits their efficacy in real-time grasping tasks. To address these limitations, this paper introduces a novel two-stage pipeline for dynamic scene reconstruction. In the first stage, our approach takes scene scanning as input to register each target object with mesh reconstruction and novel object pose tracking. In the second stage, pose tracking is still performed to provide object poses in real-time, enabling our approach to transform the reconstructed object point clouds back into the scene. Unlike conventional methodologies, which rely on static scene snapshots, our method continuously captures the evolving scene geometry, resulting in a comprehensive and up-to-date point cloud representation. By circumventing the constraints posed by occlusion, our method enhances the overall grasp planning process and empowers state-of-the-art 6-DoF robotic grasping algorithms to exhibit markedly improved accuracy.

An ultraviolet photodetector based on conductive hydrogenated TiO$_2$ film prepared by radio frequency atmospheric pressure plasma

The growing demand for real-time ultraviolet (UV) monitoring calls for a simple, rapid, and low-cost strategy to prepare UV photodetectors. We prepare a wearable real-time UV photodetector based on hydrogenated titanium dioxide film synthesized by radio frequency atmospheric pressure plasma. The conductivity of our hydrogenated titanium dioxide is improved to 10.2 S cm$^{-1}$, 9 orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine titanium dioxide after 10 min plasma treatment. Plasma hydrogenation disrupts the surface crystal structure, introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) that create self-doped titanium(III) and titanium (II) species. First-principles calculations indicate the OVs raise the Fermi level of TiO$_2$ and distort the lattice nearby. Our optimized film has a distinctive periodic switching characteristic under intermittent illumination and good responsivity from 280 - 400 nm, peaking at 632.35 mA W^{-1}$ at 365 nm. The fabricated wearable sensor based on the optimized film effectively performs the monitoring of the daily variation of ambient UV intensity in three typical weather types and transferring its data to a smartphone via Wi-Fi.

Long-Range Structural Order in a Hidden Phase of Ruddlesden-Popper Bilayer Nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

The recent discovery of superconductivity in Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer nickelate, specifically La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, has generated significant interest in the exploration of high-temperature superconductivity within this material family. In this study, we present the crystallographic and electrical resistivity properties of two distinct Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates: the bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ (referred to as 2222-phase) and a previously uncharacterized phase, La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ (1313-phase). The 2222-phase is characterized by a pseudo $F$-centered orthorhombic lattice, featuring bilayer perovskite [LaNiO$_3$] layers interspaced by rock salt [LaO] layers, forming a repeated ...2222... sequence. Intriguingly, the 1313-phase, which displays semiconducting properties, crystallizes in the $Cmmm$ space group and exhibits a pronounced predilection for a $C$-centered orthorhombic lattice. Within this structure, the perovskite [LaNiO$_3$] layers exhibit a distinctive long-range ordered arrangement, alternating between single- and trilayer configurations, resulting in a ...1313... sequence. This report contributes to novel insights into the crystallography and the structure-property relationship of Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates, paving the way for further investigations into their unique physical properties.

Insulator to Metal Transition, Spin-Phonon Coupling, and Potential Magnetic Transition Observed in Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate LiYbSe$_2$ under High Pressure

Metallization of quantum spin liquid (QSL) materials has long been considered as a potential route to achieve unconventional superconductivity. Here we report our endeavor in this direction by pressurizing a three-dimensional QSL candidate, LiYbSe$_2$, with a previously unreported pyrochlore structure. High-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman studies up to 50 GPa reveal no appreciable changes of structural symmetry or distortion in this pressure range. This compound is so insulating that its resistance decreases below 10$^5$ $Ω$ only at pressures above 25 GPa in the corresponding temperature range accompanying the gradual reduction of band gap upon compression. Interestingly, an insulator-to-metal transition takes place in LiYbSe$_2$ at about 68 GPa and the metallic behavior remains up to 123.5 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the present study. A possible sign of magnetic or other phase transition was observed in LiYbSe$_2$. The insulator-to-metal transition in LiYbSe$_2$ under high pressure makes it an ideal system to study the pressure effects on QSL candidates of spin-1/2 Yb$^{3+}$ system in different lattice patterns.

A Novel Estimation Method for Temperature of Magnetic Nanoparticles Dominated by Brownian Relaxation Based on Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy

This paper presents a novel method for estimating the temperature of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) based on AC magnetization harmonics of MNPs dominated by Brownian relaxation. The difference in the AC magnetization response and magnetization harmonic between the Fokker-Planck equation and the Langevin function was analyzed, and we studied the relationship between the magnetization harmonic and the key factors, such as Brownian relaxation time, temperature, magnetic field strength, core size and hydrodynamic size of MNPs, excitation frequency, and so on. We proposed a compensation function for AC magnetization harmonic with consideration of the key factors and the difference between the Fokker-Planck equation and the Langevin function. Then a temperature estimation model based on the compensation function and the Langevin function was established. By employing the least squares algorithm, the temperature was successfully calculated. The experimental results show that the temperature error is less than 0.035 K in the temperature range from 310 K to 320 K. The temperature estimation model is expected to improve the performance of the magnetic nanoparticle thermometer and be applied to magnetic nanoparticle-mediated hyperthermia.

Pressure-dependent "Insulator-Metal-Insulator" Behavior in Sr-doped La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

Recently, superconductivity at high temperatures has been observed in bulk La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ under high pressure. However, the attainment of high-purity La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals, exhibiting controlled and homogeneous stoichiometry through the post-annealing process in an oxygen-rich floating zone furnace, remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report the crystal structure and physical properties of single crystals of Sr-doped La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ synthesized at high pressure (20 GPa) and high temperature (1400 °C). Through single crystal X-ray diffraction, we showed that high-pressure-synthesized paramagnetic Sr-doped La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with Ni-O-Ni bond angles of 173.4(2)°out-of-plane and 175.0(2)°and 176.7(2)°in plane. The substitution of Sr alters in band filling and the ratio of Ni$^{2+}$/Ni$^{3+}$ in Sr-doped La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, aligning them with those of "La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7.05}$", thereby leading to significant modifications in properties under high pressure relative to the unsubstituted parent phase. At ambient pressure, Sr-doped La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ exhibits insulating properties, and the conductivity increases as pressure goes up to 10 GPa. However, upon further increasing pressure beyond 10.7 GPa, Sr-doped La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ transits back from a metal-like behavior to an insulator. The insulator-metal-insulator trend under high pressure dramatically differs from the behavior of the parent compound La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$, despite their similar behavior in the low-pressure regime. These experimental results underscore the considerable challenge in achieving superconductivity in nickelates.

Impersonating a Superconductor: High-Pressure BaCoO$_3$, an Insulating Ferromagnet

We report the high-pressure synthesis (6 GPa, 1200 $^{\circ}$C) and ambient pressure characterization of hexagonal HP-BaCoO$_3$. The material (with the 2H crystal structure) has a short intrachain Co-Co distance of about 2.07 $\text{Å}$. Our magnetization investigation revealed robust diamagnetic behavior below approximately 130 K when exposed to weak applied magnetic fields (10 Oe) and a distinct half-levitation phenomenon below that temperature, such as is often observed for superconductors. Its field-dependent magnetization profile, however, unveils the characteristics of ferromagnetism, marked by a substantial magnetic retentivity of 0.22(1) $μ_B$/Co at a temperature of 2 K. Electrical resistivity measurements indicate that HP-BaCoO$_3$ is a ferromagnetic insulator, not a superconductor.

Incommensurate Spiral Spin Order in CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ observed via High Pressure Neutron Diffraction

High pressure neutron diffraction is employed to investigate the magnetic behavior of CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ in extreme conditions. In contrast to antiferromagnetic ordering on Mn atoms reported at ambient pressure, our results reveal that at high pressure, incommensurate spiral spin order emerges due to the interplay between magnetism on the Mn atoms and strong spin-orbit coupling on the Bi atoms: sinusoidal spin order is observed at pressures as high as 7.4 GPa. Competing antiferromagnetic order is observed at different temperatures in the partially frustrated lattice. This research provides a unique toolbox for conducting experimental magnetic and spin dynamics studies on magnetic quantum materials via high pressure neutron diffraction.

Is La3Ni2O6.5 a Bulk Superconducting Nickelate?

Superconducting states onsetting at moderately high temperatures have been observed in epitaxially-stabilized RENiO2-based thin films. However, recently it has also been reported that superconductivity at high temperatures is observed in bulk La3Ni2O7-δ at high pressure, opening further possibilities for study. Here we report the reduction profile of La3Ni2O7 in a stream of 5% H2/Ar gas and the isolation of the metastable intermediate phase La3Ni2O6.45, which is based on Ni2+. Although this reduced phase does not superconduct at ambient or high pressures, it offers insights into the Ni-327 system and encourages the future study of nickelates as a function of oxygen content.

The Pressure-Stabilized Polymorph of Indium Triiodide

A layered rhombohedral polymorph of indium (III) triiodide is synthesized at high pressure and temperature. The unit cell symmetry and approximate dimensions are determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Its R-3 crystal structure, with a = 7.217 Å, and c = 20.476 Å, is refined by the Rietveld method on powder X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure is based on InI6 octahedra sharing edges to form honeycomb lattice layers, though with considerable stacking variations. Different from ambient pressure InI3, which has a monoclinic molecular structure and a light-yellow color, high pressure InI3 is layered and has an orange color. The band gaps of both the monoclinic and rhombohedral variants of InI3 are estimated from diffuse reflectance measurements.

Hidden Hydroxides in KOH-Grown BaNiO3 Crystals: A Potential Link to Their Catalytic Behavior

The hexagonal perovskite BaNiO3, prepared via non-ceramic approaches, is known to act as a good catalyst for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Here we report our observation that BaNiO3 synthesized via KOH flux growth and high O2 pressure ceramic synthesis have different magnetic properties. We show that this is because the KOH flux-grown crystals made in open-air are actually a hydroxide-containing form of BaNiO3 that can be dried upon annealing in O2 flow. This work not only unveils a previously unknown aspect of the BaNiO3 OER catalyst and offers some insights into the underlying mechanism, but also suggests that hydroxide ions may be present in other hexagonal perovskite oxides prepared in wet conditions.

DR-Pose: A Two-stage Deformation-and-Registration Pipeline for Category-level 6D Object Pose Estimation

Category-level object pose estimation involves estimating the 6D pose and the 3D metric size of objects from predetermined categories. While recent approaches take categorical shape prior information as reference to improve pose estimation accuracy, the single-stage network design and training manner lead to sub-optimal performance since there are two distinct tasks in the pipeline. In this paper, the advantage of two-stage pipeline over single-stage design is discussed. To this end, we propose a two-stage deformation-and registration pipeline called DR-Pose, which consists of completion-aided deformation stage and scaled registration stage. The first stage uses a point cloud completion method to generate unseen parts of target object, guiding subsequent deformation on the shape prior. In the second stage, a novel registration network is designed to extract pose-sensitive features and predict the representation of object partial point cloud in canonical space based on the deformation results from the first stage. DR-Pose produces superior results to the state-of-the-art shape prior-based methods on both CAMERA25 and REAL275 benchmarks. Codes are available at https://github.com/Zray26/DR-Pose.git.

Grounded Image Text Matching with Mismatched Relation Reasoning

This paper introduces Grounded Image Text Matching with Mismatched Relation (GITM-MR), a novel visual-linguistic joint task that evaluates the relation understanding capabilities of transformer-based pre-trained models. GITM-MR requires a model to first determine if an expression describes an image, then localize referred objects or ground the mismatched parts of the text. We provide a benchmark for evaluating pre-trained models on this task, with a focus on the challenging settings of limited data and out-of-distribution sentence lengths. Our evaluation demonstrates that pre-trained models lack data efficiency and length generalization ability. To address this, we propose the Relation-sensitive Correspondence Reasoning Network (RCRN), which incorporates relation-aware reasoning via bi-directional message propagation guided by language structure. RCRN can be interpreted as a modular program and delivers strong performance in both length generalization and data efficiency.

PEGG-Net: Pixel-Wise Efficient Grasp Generation in Complex Scenes

Vision-based grasp estimation is an essential part of robotic manipulation tasks in the real world. Existing planar grasp estimation algorithms have been demonstrated to work well in relatively simple scenes. But when it comes to complex scenes, such as cluttered scenes with messy backgrounds and moving objects, the algorithms from previous works are prone to generate inaccurate and unstable grasping contact points. In this work, we first study the existing planar grasp estimation algorithms and analyze the related challenges in complex scenes. Secondly, we design a Pixel-wise Efficient Grasp Generation Network (PEGG-Net) to tackle the problem of grasping in complex scenes. PEGG-Net can achieve improved state-of-the-art performance on the Cornell dataset (98.9%) and second-best performance on the Jacquard dataset (93.8%), outperforming other existing algorithms without the introduction of complex structures. Thirdly, PEGG-Net could operate in a closed-loop manner for added robustness in dynamic environments using position-based visual servoing (PBVS). Finally, we conduct real-world experiments on static, dynamic, and cluttered objects in different complex scenes. The results show that our proposed network achieves a high success rate in grasping irregular objects, household objects, and workshop tools. To benefit the community, our trained model and supplementary materials are available at https://github.com/HZWang96/PEGG-Net.
