Line-of-sight velocity distributions of low-luminosity elliptical galaxies

The shape of the line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) is measured for a sample of 14 elliptical galaxies, predominantly low-luminosity ellipticals. The sample is dominated by galaxies in the Virgo cluster but also contains ellipticals in nearby groups and low density environments. The parameterization of the LOSVD due to Gerhard and van der Marel and Franx is adopted, which measures the asymmetrical and symmetrical deviations of the LOSVD from a Gaussian by the amplitudes h3 and h4 of the Gauss-Hermite series. Rotation, velocity dispersion, h3 and h4 are determined as a function of radius for both major and minor axes. Non-Gaussian LOSVDs are found for all galaxies along the major axes. Deviations from a Gaussian LOSVD along the minor axis are of much lower amplitude if present at all. Central decreases in velocity dispersion are found for three galaxies. Two galaxies have kinematically-decoupled cores: NGC 4458 and the well-known case of NGC 3608.

Galaxy mapping with the SAURON integral-field spectrograph: The star formation history of NGC 4365

We report the first wide-field mapping of the kinematics and stellar populations in the E3 galaxy NGC 4365. The velocity maps extend previous long-slit work. They show two independent kinematic subsystems: the central 300 x 700 pc rotates about the projected minor axis, and the main body of the galaxy, 3 x 4 kpc, rotates almost at right angles to this. The line-strength maps show that the metallicity of the stellar population decreases from a central value greater than solar, to one-half solar at a radius of 2 kpc. The decoupled core and main body of the galaxy have the same luminosity-weighted age, of ~14 Gyr, and the same elevated magnesium-to-iron ratio. The two kinematically distinct components have thus shared a common star formation history. We infer that the galaxy underwent a sequence of mergers associated with dissipative star formation that ended >12 Gyr ago. The misalignment between the photometric and kinematic axes of the main body is unambiguous evidence of triaxiality. The similarity of the stellar populations in the two components suggests that the observed kinematic structure has not changed substantially in 12 Gyr.

On the dependence of spectroscopic indices of early-type galaxies on age, metallicity and velocity dispersion

We investigate the Mg-sigma and -sigma relations in a sample of 72 early-type galaxies drawn mostly from cluster and group environments using a homogeneous data-set which is well-calibrated onto the Lick/IDS system. The small intrinsic scatter in Mg at a given sigma gives upper limits on the spread in age and metallicity of 49% and 32% respectively, if the spread is attributed to one quantity only and if the variations in age and metallicity are uncorrelated. The age/metallicity distribution as inferred from the Hbeta vs diagnostic diagram reinforces this conclusion, as we find mostly galaxies with large luminosity weighted ages spanning a range in metallicity. In our sample we do not find significant evidence for an anti-correlation of ages and metallicities which would keep the index-sigma relations tight while hiding a large spread in age and metallicity. As a result of correlated errors in the age-metallicity plane, a mild age-metallicity anti-correlation cannot be completely ruled out given the current data. Correcting the line-strengths indices for non-solar abundance ratios following the recent paper by Trager et al., leads to higher mean metallicity and slightly younger age estimates while preserving the metallicity sequence. The [Mg/Fe] ratio is mildly correlated with the central velocity dispersion and ranges from [Mg/Fe]=0.05 to 0.3 for galaxies with sigma > 100 km/s. Under the assumption that there is no age gradient along the index-sigma relations, the abundance-ratio corrected Mg-sigma, -sigma and Hbeta-sigma relations give consistent estimates of Delta [M/H]/ Delta log sigma = 0.9 (+- 0.1). The slope of the Hbeta-sigma relation limits a potential age trend as a function of sigma to 2-3 Gyrs along the sequence.(abriged)

Lensing in the Hercules Supercluster

We report Keck LRIS observations of an arc-like background galaxy near the center of Abell 2152 (z=0.043), one of the three clusters comprising the Hercules supercluster. The background object has a redshift z=0.1423 and is situated 25 arcsec north of the primary component of the A2152 brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). The object is about 15 arcsec in total length and has a reddening-corrected R-band magnitude of $m_R = 18.55\pm0.03$. Its spectrum shows numerous strong emission lines, as well as absorption features. The strength of the H-alpha emission would imply a star formation rate $\SFR \approx 3h^{-2} \msun $yr$^{-1}$ in the absence of any lensing. However, the curved shaped of this object and its tangential orientation along the major axis of the BCG suggest lensing. We model the A2152 core mass distribution including the two BCG components and the cluster potential. We present velocity and velocity dispersion profile measurements for the two BCG components and use these to help constrain the potential. The lens modeling indicates a likely magnification factor of $\sim1.9$ for the lensed galaxy, making A2152 the nearest cluster in which such significant lensing of a background source has been observed. Finally, we see evidence for a concentration of early-type galaxies at $z=0.13$ near the centroid of the X-ray emission previously attributed to A2152. We suggest that emission from this background concentration is the cause of the offset of the X-ray center from the A2152 BCG. The background concentration and the dispersed mass of the Hercules supercluster could add further to the lensing strength of the A2152 cluster.

SAURON Observations of Disks in Early-Type Galaxies

We briefly describe the SAURON project, aimed at determining the intrinsic shape and internal dynamics of spheroids. We focus here on the ability of SAURON to identify gaseous and stellar disks and to measure their morphology and kinematics. We illustrate some of our results with complete maps of NGC3377, NGC3623, and NGC4365.

A Photometric Study of the Ages and Metallicities of Early-type Galaxies in A2218

We present deep optical and near-infrared imaging of the rich cluster A2218 at z=0.17. Our optical imaging comes from new multicolour Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations in the F450W (B), F606W (V) and F814W (I) passbands. These observations are complemented by deep near-infrared, Ks-band, imaging from the new INGRID imager on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. This combination provides unique high-precision multicolour optical-infrared photometry and morphological information for a large sample of galaxies in the core of this rich cluster at a lookback time of ~3Gyrs. We analyse the (B-I), (V-I) and (I-Ks) colours of galaxies spanning a range of a factor of 100 in K-band luminosity in this region and compare these with grids of stellar population models. We find that the locus of the colours of the stellar populations in the luminous (>0.5L*) early-type galaxies, both ellipticals and S0s, traces a sequence of varying metallicity at a single age. At fainter luminosities (<0.1L*), this sequence is extended to lower metallicities by the morphologically-classified ellipticals. However, the faintest S0s exhibit very different behaviour, showing a wide range in colours, including a large fraction (30%) with relatively blue colours which appear to have younger luminosity-weighted ages for their stellar populations, 2-5Gyrs. We show that the proportion of these young S0s in the cluster population is consistent with the observed decrease in the S0 population seen in distant clusters when interpreted within the framework of a two-step spectroscopic and morphological transformation of accreted spiral field galaxies into cluster S0s.

The stellar populations of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster

We have measured central line strengths for a magnitude-limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical (E) and 11 lenticular (S0) galaxies, more luminous than MB=-17. When compared with single-burst stellar population models we find that the centres of Fornax ellipticals follow a locus of fixed age and have metallicities varying roughly from half solar to two times solar. The centres of (lower luminosity) lenticular galaxies, however, exhibit a substantial spread to younger luminosity-weighted ages indicating a more extended star formation history. Galaxies with old stellar populations show tight scaling relations between metal-line indices and the central velocity dispersion. Remarkably also the Fe-lines are well correlated with sigma. Our detailed analysis of the stellar populations suggests that these scaling relations are driven mostly by metallicity. Galaxies with a young stellar component do generally deviate from the main relation. In particular the lower luminosity S0s show a large spread. Furthermore we find that elliptical galaxies and the bulge of one bright S0 are overabundant in magnesium, where the most luminous galaxies show the strongest overabundances. The stellar populations of young and faint S0s are consistent with solar abundance ratios or a weak Mg underabundance. (abriged)

The Ages and Metallicities of Early Type Galaxies in the Fornax Cluster

We have measured central line strengths for a complete sample of early type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies, more luminous than M_B=-17. In contrast to the elliptical galaxies in the sample studied by Gonzalez (and recently revisited by Trager) we find that the Fornax ellipticals follow the locus of galaxies of fixed age in Worthey's models and have metallicities varying from roughly solar to three times solar. The lenticular galaxies however exhibit a substantial spread to younger luminosity weighted ages indicating a more extended star formation history. We present measurements of the more sensitive indices: C4668 and Hgamma_A; these confirm and re-enforce the conclusions that the elliptical galaxies are coeval and that only the lenticular galaxies show symptoms of late star-formation. The inferred difference in the age distribution between lenticular and elliptical galaxies is a robust conclusion as the models generate consistent relative ages using different age and metallicity indicators even though the absolute ages remain uncertain. The young luminosity weighted ages of the S0s in the Fornax cluster are consistent with the recent discovery that the fraction of S0 galaxies in intermediate redshift clusters is a factor of 2-3 lower than found locally and suggests that a fraction of the cluster spiral galaxy population has evolved to quiescence in the 5 Gyr interval from z=0.5 to the present. Two of the faintest lenticular galaxies in our sample have blue continua and strong Balmer-line absorption suggesting starbursts \la2 Gyrs ago. These may be the low redshift analogues of the starburst or post-starburst galaxies seen in clusters at z=0.3, similar to the Hdelta strong galaxies in the Coma cluster.
