Theory Viewpoint on Extracting Nucleon Polarisabilities in Low-Energy Compton Scattering

During the workshop "Compton Scattering off Protons and Light Nuclei: pinning down the nucleon polarisabilities" (ECT*, Trento, Italy, 29 July -- 2 August 2013, http://www.ectstar.eu/node/98), recent developments had been reviewed in experimental and theoretical studies of real and virtual Compton scattering, static and generalized dipole scalar and spin polarisabilities of nucleons, as well as related phenomena in physics of muonic atoms. A vivid topic at the workshop was pathways towards the most precise extraction of the static polarisabilities from low-energy Compton cattering---including pertinent theoretical uncertainties. Being asked by our experimental colleagues, we prepared during the workshop a short letter with conclusions of the discussion, emphasising future prospects.

Using EFT to analyze low-energy Compton scattering from protons and light nuclei

We discuss the application of an effective field theory (EFT) which incorporates the chiral symmetry of QCD to Compton scattering from the proton and deuteron. We describe the chiral EFT analysis of the proton Compton scattering database presented in our recent review (arXiv:1203.6834), which gives: alpha^{(p)}=10.5 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.8(theory); beta^{(p)}= 2.7 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.8(theory), for the electric and magnetic dipole polarizability of the proton. We also summarize the chiral EFT analysis of the world data on coherent Compton scattering from deuterium presented in arXiv:1203.6834. That yields: alpha^{(s)}=10.5 +/- 2.0(stat) +/- 0.8(theory); beta^{(s)}=3.6 +/- 1.0(stat) +/- 0.8(theory).

Using effective field theory to analyse low-energy Compton scattering data from protons and light nuclei

Compton scattering provides important insight into the structure of the nucleon. For photons up to about 300 MeV, it is parameterised by six dynamical dipole polarisabilities which characterise the response of the nucleon to a monochromatic photon of fixed frequency and multipolarity. Their zero-energy limit yields the well-known static electric and magnetic dipole polarisabilities αand β, and the four dipole spin polarisabilities. Chiral Effective Field Theory (ChiEFT) describes nucleon, deuteron and 3-He Compton scattering, using consistent nuclear currents, rescattering and wave functions. It can thus also be used to extract useful information on the neutron amplitude from Compton scattering on light nuclei. We summarise past work in ChiEFT on all of these reactions and compare with other theoretical approaches. We also discuss all proton experiments up to about 400 MeV, as well as the three modern elastic deuteron data sets, paying particular attention to precision and accuracy of each set. Constraining the Delta(1232) parameters from the resonance region, we then perform new fits to the proton data up to omega(lab)=170 MeV, and a new fit to the deuteron data. After checking in each case that a two-parameter fit is compatible with the respective Baldin sum rules, we obtain, using the sum-rule constraints in a one-parameter fit, α=10.7\pm0.3(stat)\pm0.2(Baldin)\pm0.8(theory), β=3.1\mp0.3(stat)\pm0.2(Baldin)\pm0.8(theory), for the proton polarisabilities, and α=10.9\pm 0.9(stat)\pm0.2(Baldin)\pm0.8(theory), β=3.6\mp 0.9(stat)\pm0.2(Baldin)\pm0.8(theory), for the isoscalar polarisabilities, each in units of 10^(-4) fm^3. We discuss plans for polarised Compton scattering, their promise as tools to access spin polarisabilities, and other future avenues for theoretical and experimental investigation.

Nucleon Spin-Polarisabilities from Polarisation Observables in Low-Energy Deuteron Compton Scattering

We investigate the dependence of polarisation observables in elastic deuteron Compton scattering below the pion production threshold on the spin-independent and spin-dependent iso-scalar dipole polarisabilities of the nucleon. The calculation uses Chiral Effective Field Theory with dynamical Delta(1232) degrees of freedom in the Small Scale Expansion at next-to-leading order. Resummation of the NN intermediate rescattering states and including the Delta induces sizeable effects. The analysis considers cross-sections and the analysing power of linearly polarised photons on an unpolarised target, and cross-section differences and asymmetries of linearly and circularly polarised beams on a vector-polarised deuteron. An intuitive argument helps one to identify kinematics in which one or several polarisabilities do not contribute. Some double-polarised observables are only sensitive to linear combinations of two of the spin-polarisabilities, simplifying a multipole-analysis of the data. Spin-polarisabilities can be extracted at photon energies \gtrsim 100 MeV, after measurements at lower energies of \lesssim 70 MeV provide high-accuracy determinations of the spin-independent ones. An interactive Mathematica 7.0 notebook of our findings is available from hgrie@gwu.edu.

Parity-violating neutron spin rotation in hydrogen and deuterium

We calculate the (parity-violating) spin rotation angle of a polarized neutron beam through hydrogen and deuterium targets, using pionless effective field theory up to next-to-leading order. Our result is part of a program to obtain the five leading independent low-energy parameters that characterize hadronic parity-violation from few-body observables in one systematic and consistent framework. The two spin-rotation angles provide independent constraints on these parameters. Using naive dimensional analysis to estimate the typical size of the couplings, we expect the signal for standard target densities to be 10^-7 to 10^-6 rad/m for both hydrogen and deuterium targets. We find no indication that the nd observable is enhanced compared to the np one. All results are properly renormalized. An estimate of the numerical and systematic uncertainties of our calculations indicates excellent convergence. An appendix contains the relevant partial-wave projectors of the three-nucleon system.

Nucleon Polarizabilities from Deuteron Compton Scattering within a Green's-Function Hybrid Approach

We examine elastic Compton scattering from the deuteron for photon energies ranging from zero to 100 MeV, using state-of-the-art deuteron wave functions and NN-potentials. Nucleon-nucleon rescattering between emission and absorption of the two photons is treated by Green's functions in order to ensure gauge invariance and the correct Thomson limit. With this Green's-function hybrid approach, we fulfill the low-energy theorem of deuteron Compton scattering and there is no significant dependence on the deuteron wave function used. Concerning the nucleon structure, we use Chiral Effective Field Theory with explicit Δ(1232) degrees of freedom within the Small Scale Expansion up to leading-one-loop order. Agreement with available data is good at all energies. Our 2-parameter fit to all elastic $γd$ data leads to values for the static isoscalar dipole polarizabilities which are in excellent agreement with the isoscalar Baldin sum rule. Taking this value as additional input, we find α_E^s= (11.3+-0.7(stat)+-0.6(Baldin)) x 10^{-4} fm^3 and β_M^s = (3.2-+0.7(stat)+-0.6(Baldin)) x 10^{-4} fm^3 and conclude by comparison to the proton numbers that neutron and proton polarizabilities are essentially the same.

On Parity-Violating Three-Nucleon Interactions and the Predictive Power of Few-Nucleon EFT at Very Low Energies

We address the typical strengths of hadronic parity-violating three-nucleon interactions in "pion-less" Effective Field Theory in the nucleon-deuteron (iso-doublet) system. By analysing the superficial degree of divergence of loop diagrams, we conclude that no such interactions are needed at leading order. The only two linearly independent parity-violating three-nucleon structures with one derivative mix two-S and two-P-half waves with iso-spin transitions Delta I = 0 or 1. Due to their structure, they cannot absorb any divergence ostensibly appearing at next-to-leading order. This observation is based on the approximate realisation of Wigner's combined SU(4) spin-isospin symmetry in the two-nucleon system, even when effective-range corrections are included. Parity-violating three-nucleon interactions thus only appear beyond next-to-leading order. This guarantees renormalisability of the theory to that order without introducing new, unknown coupling constants and allows the direct extraction of parity-violating two-nucleon interactions from three-nucleon experiments.

Universal Correlations in Pion-less EFT with the Resonating Group Model: Three and Four Nucleons

The Effective Field Theory "without pions" at next-to-leading order is used to analyze universal bound state and scattering properties of the 3- and 4-nucleon system. Results of a variety of phase shift equivalent nuclear potentials are presented for bound state properties of 3H and 4He, and for the singlet S-wave 3He-neutron scattering length a_0(3He-n). The calculations are performed with the Refined Resonating Group Method and include a full treatment of the Coulomb interaction and the leading-order 3-nucleon interaction. The results compare favorably with data and values from AV18(+UIX) model calculations. A new correlation between a_0(3He-n) and the 3H binding energy is found. Furthermore, we confirm at next-to-leading order the correlations, already found at leading-order, between the 3H binding energy and the 3H charge radius, and the Tjon line. With the 3H binding energy as input, we get predictions of the Effective Field Theory "without pions" at next-to-leading order for the root mean square charge radius of 3H of (1.6\pm 0.2) fm, for the 4He binding energy of (28\pm 2.5) MeV, and for Re(a_0(3He-n)) of (7.5\pm 0.6)fm. Including the Coulomb interaction, the splitting in binding energy between 3H and 3He is found to be (0.66\pm 0.03) MeV. The discrepancy to data of (0.10\mp 0.03) MeV is model independently attributed to higher order charge independence breaking interactions. We also demonstrate that different results for the same observable stem from higher order effects, and carefully assess that numerical uncertainties are negligible. Our results demonstrate the convergence and usefulness of the pion-less theory at next-to-leading order in the 4He channel. We conclude that no 4-nucleon interaction is needed to renormalize the theory at next-to-leading order in the 4-nucleon sector.

Compton scattering from the proton: An analysis using the delta expansion up to N3LO

We report on a chiral effective field theory calculation of Compton scattering from the proton. Our calculation includes pions, nucleons, and the Delta(1232) as explicit degrees of freedom. It uses the "delta expansion", and so implements the hierarchy of scales m_pi < M_Delta-M_N < Lambda_chi. In this expansion the power counting in the vicinity of the Delta peak changes, and resummation of the loop graphs associated with the Delta width is indicated. We have computed the nucleon Compton amplitude in the delta expansion up to N3LO for photon energies of the order of m_pi. This is the first order at which the proton Compton scattering amplitudes receive contributions from contact operators which encode contributions to the spin-independent polarisabilities from states with energies of the order of Lambda_chi. We fit the coefficients of these two operators to the experimental proton Compton data that has been taken in the relevant photon-energy domain, and are in a position to extract new results for the proton polarisabilities alpha and beta.

Nucleon Spin Polarisabilities from Polarised Deuteron Compton Scattering

We present recent results on elastic deuteron Compton scattering calculations for polarised beans and targets up to next-to-leading order within Chiral Effective Field Theory in the Small Scale Expansion variant to implement a dynamical Δ(1232) degree of freedom. A simple power-counting argument discloses that np-intermediate rescattering states must be explicitly included at leading order already. This automatically results in the correct Thomson limit and guarantees current conservation. In view of ongoing effort at MAXlab, proposals at HIGS and plans at MAMI, we address in detail single- and double-polarised observables with linearly or circularly polarised photons on both unpolarised and vector-polarised deuterons. Our results indicate that several of the polarisation observables can be instrumental to extract not only spin-independent nucleon polarisabilities, but also the so-far practically un-determined spin-dependent polarisabilities which parameterise the stiffness of the nucleon spin in external electro-magnetic fields. Amongst the questions addressed are: convergence of the expansion for including the Δ, the role of the np-rescattering contributions, and sensitivity to the deuteron wave function. An interactive Mathematica 7.0 notebook of these findings is available from the authors.

Pion-less Effective Field Theory on Low-Energy Deuteron Electro-Disintegration

In view of its relation to Big-Bang Nucleo-Synthesis and a reported discrepancy between nuclear models and data taken at S-DALINAC, electro-induced deuteron break-up 2H(e,e' p)n is studied at momentum transfer q<100MeV and close to threshold in the low-energy nuclear Effective Field Theory without dynamical pions. The result at N2LO for electric dipole currents and at NLO for magnetic ones converges order-by-order better than quantitatively predicted and contains no free parameter. It is at this order determined by simple, well-known observables. Decomposing the doubly differential cross-section into the longitudinal-plus-transverse (L+T), transverse-transverse (TT) and longitudinal-transverse interference (LT) terms, we find excellent agreement with a potential-model calculation by Arenh"ovel et al using the Bonn potential. Theory and data also agree well on σ_{L+T}. There is however no space on the theory-side for the discrepancy of up to 30%, 3-σbetween theory and experiment in σ_{LT}. From universality, we conclude that no theoretical approach with the correct deuteron asymptotic wave-function can explain the data. Un-determined short-distance contributions that could affect σ_{LT} enter only at high orders, i.e. at the few-percent level. We notice some issues with the kinematics and normalisation of the data reported.

Estimating Consequences of 3-Body Forces

Classifying the strengthes of three-body forces 3BFs with the condition that observables must be cut-off independent, i.e. renormalised at each order, leads to surprising results with relevance for example for thermal neutron capture on the deuteron. Details and a better bibliography in Ref. [1].

Neutron Polarisabilities from Deuteron Compton Scattering in \chiEFT

Chiral Effective Field Theory is for photon energies up to 200 MeV the tool to accurately determine the polarisabilities of the neutron from deuteron Compton scattering. A multipole analysis reveals that dispersive effects from an explicit Delta(1232) prove in particular indispensable to understand the data at 95 MeV measured at SAL. Simple power-counting arguments derived from nuclear phenomenology lead to the correct Thomson limit and gauge invariance. At next-to-leading order, the static scalar dipole polarisabilities are extracted as identical for proton and neutron within the error-bar of available data: α^n=11.6\pm1.5_stat\pm0.6_Baldin, β^n=3.6\mp1.5_stat\pm0.6_Baldin for the neutron, in units of 10^-4 fm^3, compared to α^p=11.0\pm1.4_stat\pm0.4_Baldin, β}^p=2.8\mp1.4_stat\pm0.4_Baldin for the proton in the same framework. New experiments e.g. at MAXlab (Lund) will improve the statistical error-bar.

Effective field theory calculation of nd radiative capture at thermal energies

The cross section for the thermal neutron capture by the deuteron is calculated with pionless Effective Field Theory(EFT). No new Three-Nucleon forces are needed up to next-to-next-to-leading order in order to achieve cut-off independent results, besides those fixed by the triton binding energy and Nd scattering length in the triton channel. The cross-section is accurately determined to be $σ_{tot}=[0.503\pm 0.003]mb$. At zero energies, the magnetic $M1$-transition gives the dominant contribution and is calculated up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). Close agreement between the available experimental data and the calculated cross section is reached. We demonstrate convergence and cutoff independence order by order in the low-energy expansion.

Nucleon Polarisabilities from Deuteron Compton Scattering, and Its Lessons for Chiral Power Counting

A brief review of Compton scattering off the deuteron in Chiral Effective Field Theory, including gauge invariance and the correct Thomson limit. We model-independently determine the iso-scalar, spin-independent dipole polarisabilities of the nucleon at zero energy from all Compton data below 100 MeV as α_{E1}^s=11.3+-0.7_{stat}\+-0.6_{Baldin}+-1_{theory}, β_{M1}^s=3.2-+0.7_{stat}+-0.6_{Baldin}+-1_{theory}, each in 10^{-4} fm^3. Proton and neutron polarisabilities are therefore identical within (predominantly statistical) errors.

How To Classify 3-Body Forces -- And Why

For systems with only short-range forces and shallow 2-body bound states, the typical strength of any 3-body force in all partial-waves, including external currents, is systematically estimated by renormalisation-group arguments in the Effective Field Theory of Point-Like Interactions. The underlying principle and some consequences in particular in Nuclear Physics are discussed.

Naive Dimensional Analysis for Three-Body Forces Without Pions

For systems of three identical particles in which short-range forces produce shallow two-particle bound states, and in particular for the ``pion-less'' Effective Field Theory of Nuclear Physics, I extend and systematise the power-counting of three-body forces to all partial-waves and orders, including external currents. With low-energy observables independent of the details of short-distance dynamics, the typical strength of a three-body force is determined from the superficial degree of divergence of the three-body diagrams which contain only two-body forces. This naïve dimensional analysis must be amended as the asymptotic solution to the leading-order Faddeev equation depends for large off-shell momenta crucially on the partial wave and spin-combination of the system. It is shown by analytic construction to be weaker in most channels with angular momentum smaller than 3 than expected. This demotes many three-nucleon forces to high orders. Observables like the quartet-S-scattering length are less sensitive to three-nucleon forces than guessed. I also comment on the Efimov effect and limit-cycle for non-zero angular momentum.
