Multi-qubit entanglement engineering via projective measurements

So far, various multi-photon entangled states have been observed experimentally by using different experimental set-ups. Here, we present a scheme to realize many SLOCC-inequivalent states of three and four qubits via projective measurements on suitable entangled states. We demonstrate how these states can be observed experimentally in a single set-up and study the feasibility of the implementation with present-day technology.

Experimental implementation of a four-player quantum game

Game theory is central to the understanding of competitive interactions arising in many fields, from the social and physical sciences to economics. Recently, as the definition of information is generalized to include entangled quantum systems, quantum game theory has emerged as a framework for understanding the competitive flow of quantum information. Up till now only two-player quantum games have been demonstrated. Here we report the first experiment that implements a four-player quantum Minority game over tunable four-partite entangled states encoded in the polarization of single photons. Experimental application of appropriate quantum player strategies give equilibrium payoff values well above those achievable in the classical game. These results are in excellent quantitative agreement with our theoretical analysis of the symmetric Pareto optimal strategies. Our result demonstrate for the first time how non-trivial equilibria can arise in a competitive situation involving quantum agents and pave the way for a range of quantum transaction applications.

Quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping with linear optics logic gates

We report on the usage of a linear optics phase gate for distinguishing all four Bell states simultaneously in a quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping protocol. This is demonstrated by full state tomography of the one and two qubit output states of the two protocols, yielding average state fidelities of about 0.83 and 0.77, respectively. In addition, the performance of the teleportation channel is characterised by quantum process tomography. The non classical properties of the entanglement swapping output states are further confirmed by the violation of a CHSH-type Bell inequality of 2.14 on average.

Experimental observation of an entire family of four-photon entangled states

A single linear optical set-up is used to observe an entire family of four-photon entangled states. This approach breaks with the inflexibility of present linear-optical set-ups usually designed for the observation of a particular multi-partite entangled state only. The family includes several prominent entangled states that are known to be highly relevant for quantum information applications.

Space-QUEST: Experiments with quantum entanglement in space

The European Space Agency (ESA) has supported a range of studies in the field of quantum physics and quantum information science in space for several years, and consequently we have submitted the mission proposal Space-QUEST (Quantum Entanglement for Space Experiments) to the European Life and Physical Sciences in Space Program. We propose to perform space-to-ground quantum communication tests from the International Space Station (ISS). We present the proposed experiments in space as well as the design of a space based quantum communication payload.

Collinear source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at non-degenerate wavelengths

We report on a simple but highly efficient source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at non-degenerate wavelengths. The fully collinear configuration of the source enables very high coupling efficiency into a single optical mode and allows the use of long nonlinear crystals. With optimized dispersion compensation it is possible to use a free-running laser diode as pump source and to reach an entanglement fidelity of 99.4 % at rates as high as 27000 pairs/s per mW of pump power. This greatly enhances the practicality of the source for applications in quantum communication and metrology.

Discriminating multi-partite entangled states

The variety of multi-partite entangled states enables numerous applications in novel quantum information tasks. In order to compare the suitability of different states from a theoretical point of view classifications have been introduced. Accordingly, here we derive criteria and demonstrate how to experimentally discriminate an observed state against the ones of certain other classes of multi-partite entangled states. Our method, originating in Bell inequalities, adds an important tool for the characterization of multi-party entanglement.

Experimental demonstration of a quantum protocol for Byzantine agreement and liar detection

We introduce a new quantum protocol for solving detectable Byzantine agreement (also called detectable broadcast) between three parties, and also for solving the detectable liar detection problem. The protocol is suggested by the properties of a four-qubit entangled state, and the classical part of the protocol is simpler than that of previous proposals. In addition, we present an experimental implementation of the protocol using four-photon entanglement.

Analysis of a single-atom dipole trap

We describe a simple experimental technique which allows to store a single Rubidium 87 atom in an optical dipole trap. Due to light-induced two-body collisions during the loading stage of the trap the maximum number of captured atoms is locked to one. This collisional blockade effect is confirmed by the observation of photon anti-bunching in the detected fluorescence light. The spectral properties of single photons emitted by the atom were studied with a narrow-band scanning cavity. We find that the atomic fluorescence spectrum is dominated by the spectral width of the exciting laser light field. In addition we observe a spectral broadening of the atomic fluorescence light due to the Doppler effect. This allows us to determine the mean kinetic energy of the trapped atom corresponding to a temperature of 105 micro Kelvin. This simple single-atom trap is the key element for the generation of atom-photon entanglement required for future applications in quantum communication and a first loophole-free test of Bell's inequality.

Remote preparation of an atomic quantum memory

Storage and distribution of quantum information are key elements of quantum information processing and quantum communication. Here, using atom-photon entanglement as the main physical resource, we experimentally demonstrate the preparation of a distant atomic quantum memory. Applying a quantum teleportation protocol on a locally prepared state of a photonic qubit, we realized this so-called remote state preparation on a single, optically trapped 87Rb atom. We evaluated the performance of this scheme by the full tomography of the prepared atomic state, reaching an average fidelity of 82%.

Experimental Observation of Four-Photon Entangled Dicke State with High Fidelity

We present the experimental observation of the symmetric four-photon entangled Dicke state with two excitations $|D_{4}^{(2)}>$. A simple experimental set-up allowed quantum state tomography yielding a fidelity as high as $0.844 \pm 0.008$. We study the entanglement persistency of the state using novel witness operators and focus on the demonstration of a remarkable property: depending on the orientation of a measurement on one photon, the remaining three photons are projected into both inequivalent classes of genuine tripartite entanglement, the GHZ and W class. Furthermore, we discuss possible applications of $|D_{4}^{(2)}>$ in quantum communication.

Atom-Photon Entanglement

We report the observation of entanglement between a single trapped atom and a single photon at a wavelength suitable for low-loss communication over large distances, thereby achieving a crucial step towards long range quantum networks. To verify the entanglement we introduce a single atom state analysis. This technique is used for full state tomography of the atom-photon qubit-pair. The detection efficiency and the entanglement fidelity are high enough to allow in a next step the generation of entangled atoms at large distances, ready for a final loophole-free Bell experiment.

Experimental Analysis of a 4-Qubit Cluster State

Linear optics quantum logic operations enabled the observation of a four-photon cluster state. We prove genuine four-partite entanglement and study its persistency, demonstrating remarkable differences to the usual GHZ state. Efficient analysis tools are introduced in the experiment, which will be of great importance in further studies on multi-particle entangled states.

Linear Optics C-Phase gate made simple

Linear optics quantum logic gates are the best tool to generate multi-photon entanglement. Simplifying a recent approach [Phys. Rev. A 65, 062324; Phys. Rev. A 66, 024308] we were able to implement the conditional phase gate with only one second order interference at a polarization dependent beam splitter, thereby significantly increasing its stability. The improved quality of the gate is evaluated by analysing its entangling capability and by performing full process tomography. The achieved results ensure that this device is well suited for implementation in various multi photon quantum information protocols.

Single Qubit Quantum Secret Sharing

We present a simple and practical protocol for the solution of a secure multiparty communication task, the secret sharing, and its experimental realization. In this protocol, a secret message is split among several parties in a way that its reconstruction require the collaboration of the participating parties. In the proposed scheme the parties solve the problem by a sequential communication of a single qubit. Moreover we show that our scheme is equivalent to the use of a multiparty entangled GHZ state but easier to realize and better scalable in practical applications.

Experimental quantum communication complexity

We prove that the fidelity of two exemplary communication complexity protocols, allowing for an N-1 bit communication, can be exponentially improved by N-1 (unentangled) qubit communication. Taking into account, for a fair comparison, all inefficiencies of state-of-the-art set-up, the experimental implementation outperforms the best classical protocol, making it the candidate for multi-party quantum communication applications.

Decoherence-Free Quantum Information Processing with Four-Photon Entangled States

Decoherence-free states protect quantum information from collective noise, the predominant cause of decoherence in current implementations of quantum communication and computation. Here we demonstrate that spontaneous parametric down-conversion can be used to generate four-photon states which enable the encoding of one qubit in a decoherence-free subspace. The immunity against noise is verified by quantum state tomography of the encoded qubit. We show that particular states of the encoded qubit can be distinguished by local measurements on the four photons only.
