Constructing near-horizon geometries in supergravities with hidden symmetry

We consider the classification of near-horizon geometries in a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and uncharged scalars in four and five dimensions, with one and two commuting rotational symmetries respectively. Assuming that the theory of gravity reduces to a 3d non-linear sigma model (as is typically the case for ungauged supergravities), we show that the functional form of any such near-horizon geometry may be determined. As an example we apply this to five dimensional minimal supergravity. We also construct an example of a five parameter near-horizon geometry solution to this theory with S^1 X S^2 horizon topology. We discuss its relation to the near-horizon geometries of the yet to be constructed extremal black rings with both electric and dipole charges.

Electrovacuum Near-horizon Geometries in Four and Five Dimensions

Associated to every stationary extremal black hole is a unique near-horizon geometry, itself a solution of the field equations. These latter spacetimes are more tractable to analyze and most importantly, retain properties of the original black hole which are intrinsic to the event horizon. After reviewing general features of near-horizon geometries, such as SO(2,1) symmetry enhancement, I report on recent work on stationary, charged extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions and present a classification of near-horizon geometries of black holes on this kind. In five dimensions, charged extremal black hole solutions to minimal (gauged) supergravity, which arises naturally in string theory and the gauge theory/gravity correspondence, are considered. I consider the classification of near-horizon geometries for the subset of such black holes which are supersymmetric. Recent progress on the classification problem in the general extremal, non-supersymmetric case is also discussed.

An infinite class of extremal horizons in higher dimensions

We present a new class of near-horizon geometries which solve Einstein's vacuum equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in all even dimensions greater than four. Spatial sections of the horizon are inhomogeneous S^2-bundles over any compact Kaehler-Einstein manifold. For a given base, the solutions are parameterised by one continuous parameter (the angular momentum) and an integer which determines the topology of the horizon. In six dimensions the horizon topology is either S^2 x S^2 or CP^2 # -CP^2. In higher dimensions the S^2-bundles are always non-trivial, and for a fixed base, give an infinite number of distinct horizon topologies. Furthermore, depending on the choice of base we can get examples of near-horizon geometries with a single rotational symmetry (the minimal dimension for this is eight). All of our horizon geometries are consistent with all known topology and symmetry constraints for the horizons of asymptotically flat or globally Anti de Sitter extremal black holes.

Generalized Killing-Yano equations in D=5 gauged supergravity

We propose a generalization of the (conformal) Killing-Yano equations relevant to D=5 minimal gauged supergravity. The generalization stems from the fact that the dual of the Maxwell flux, the 3-form *F, couples naturally to particles in the background as a `torsion'. Killing-Yano tensors in the presence of torsion preserve most of the properties of the standard Killing-Yano tensors, exploited recently for the higher-dimensional rotating black holes of vacuum gravity with cosmological constant. In particular, the generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form gives rise to the tower of generalized closed conformal Killing-Yano tensors of increasing rank which in turn generate the tower of Killing tensors. An example of a generalized Killing-Yano tensor is found for the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope black hole spacetime [hepth/0506029]. Such a tensor stands behind the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations in this background.

Static near-horizon geometries in five dimensions

We consider the classification of static near-horizon geometries of stationary extremal (not necessarily BPS) black hole solutions of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a Chern-Simons term with coupling xi (with xi=1 corresponding to supergravity). Assuming the black holes have two rotational symmetries, we show that their near-horizon geometries are either the direct product AdS_3 X S^2 or a warped product of AdS_2 and compact 3d space. In the AdS_2 case we are able to classify all possible near-horizon geometries with no magnetic fields. There are two such solutions: the direct product AdS_2 X S^3 as well as a warped product of AdS_2 and an inhomogeneous S^3. The latter solution turns out to be near-horizon limit of an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in an external electric field. In the AdS_2 case with magnetic fields, we reduce the problem (in all cases) to a single non-linear ODE. We show that if there are any purely magnetic solutions of this kind they must have S^1 X S^2 horizon topology, and for xi^2 <1/4 we find examples of solutions with both electric and magnetic fields.

A classification of near-horizon geometries of extremal vacuum black holes

We consider the near-horizon geometries of extremal, rotating black hole solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in four and five dimensions. We assume the existence of one rotational symmetry in 4d, two commuting rotational symmetries in 5d and in both cases non-toroidal horizon topology. In 4d we determine the most general near-horizon geometry of such a black hole, and prove it is the same as the near-horizon limit of the extremal Kerr-AdS(4) black hole. In 5d, without a cosmological constant, we determine all possible near-horizon geometries of such black holes. We prove that the only possibilities are one family with a topologically S^1 X S^2 horizon and two distinct families with topologically S^3 horizons. The S^1 X S^2 family contains the near-horizon limit of the boosted extremal Kerr string and the extremal vacuum black ring. The first topologically spherical case is identical to the near-horizon limit of two different black hole solutions: the extremal Myers-Perry black hole and the slowly rotating extremal Kaluza-Klein (KK) black hole. The second topologically spherical case contains the near-horizon limit of the fast rotating extremal KK black hole. Finally, in 5d with a negative cosmological constant, we reduce the problem to solving a sixth-order non-linear ODE of one function. This allows us to recover the near-horizon limit of the known, topologically S^3, extremal rotating AdS(5) black hole. Further, we construct an approximate solution corresponding to the near-horizon geometry of a small, extremal AdS(5) black ring.

Uniqueness of near-horizon geometries of rotating extremal AdS(4) black holes

We consider stationary extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We determine all non-static axisymmetric near-horizon geometries (with non-toroidal horizon topology) and all static near-horizon geometries for black holes of this kind. This allows us to deduce that the most general near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically globally AdS(4) rotating extremal black hole, is the near-horizon limit of extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS(4). We also identify the subset of near-horizon geometries which are supersymmetric. Finally, we show which physical quantities of extremal black holes may be computed from the near-horizon limit alone, and point out a simple formula for the entropy of the known supersymmetric AdS(4) black hole. Analogous results are presented in the case of vanishing cosmological constant.

Near-horizon symmetries of extremal black holes

Recent work has demonstrated an attractor mechanism for extremal rotating black holes subject to the assumption of a near-horizon SO(2,1) symmetry. We prove the existence of this symmetry for any extremal black hole with the same number of rotational symmetries as known four and five dimensional solutions (including black rings). The result is valid for a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian vectors and uncharged scalars, allowing for a non-trivial scalar potential. We prove that it remains valid in the presence of higher-derivative corrections. We show that SO(2,1)-symmetric near-horizon solutions can be analytically continued to give SU(2)-symmetric black hole solutions. For example, the near-horizon limit of an extremal 5D Myers-Perry black hole is related by analytic continuation to a non-extremal cohomogeneity-1 Myers-Perry solution.

Braneworld Isotropization and Magnetic Fields

We consider a magnetic Bianchi I braneworld, embedded in between two Schwarzschild-AdS spacetimes, boosted equal amounts in opposite directions and compare them to the analagous solution in four-dimensional General Relativity. The efficient dissipation of anisotropy on the brane is explicitly demonstrated, a process we dub braneworld isotropization. From the bulk point of view, we attribute this to anisotropic energy being carried into the bulk by hot gravitons leaving the brane. From the brane point of view this can be interpreted in terms of the production of particles in the dual CFT. We explain how this result enables us to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of anisotropic branes already studied in the literature. We also show how there is evidence of particles being over-produced, and comment on how this may ultimately provide a possible observational signature of braneworlds.

Near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric AdS(5) black holes

We provide a classification of near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black holes of five-dimensional U(1)^3-gauged supergravity which admit two rotational symmetries. We find three possibilities: a topologically spherical horizon, an S^1 \times S^2 horizon and a toroidal horizon. The near-horizon geometry of the topologically spherical case turns out to be that of the most general known supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole of U(1)^3-gauged supergravity. The other two cases have constant scalars and only exist in particular regions of this moduli space -- in particular they do not exist within minimal gauged supergravity. We also find a solution corresponding to the near-horizon geometry of a three-charge supersymmetric black ring held in equilibrium by a conical singularity; when lifted to type IIB supergravity this solution can be made regular, resulting in a discrete family of warped AdS(3) geometries. Analogous results are presented in U(1)^n gauged supergravity.

Do supersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings exist?

We determine the most general near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity that admits two rotational symmetries. The near-horizon geometry is that of the supersymmetric, topologically spherical, black hole solution of Chong et al. This proves that regular supersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings with two rotational symmetries do not exist in minimal supergravity. However, we do find a solution corresponding to the near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric black ring held in equilibrium by a conical singularity, which suggests that nonsupersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings may exist but cannot be "balanced" in the supersymmetric limit.

Gravitational Perturbations of Higher Dimensional Rotating Black Holes: Tensor Perturbations

Assessing the stability of higher-dimensional rotating black holes requires a study of linearized gravitational perturbations around such backgrounds. We study perturbations of Myers-Perry black holes with equal angular momenta in an odd number of dimensions (greater than five), allowing for a cosmological constant. We find a class of perturbations for which the equations of motion reduce to a single radial equation. In the asymptotically flat case we find no evidence of any instability. In the asymptotically anti-de Sitter case, we demonstrate the existence of a superradiant instability that sets in precisely when the angular velocity of the black hole exceeds the speed of light from the point of view of the conformal boundary. We suggest that the endpoint of the instability may be a stationary, nonaxisymmetric black hole.

Supersymmetric multi-charge AdS_5 black holes

A new supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole solution of five-dimensional U(1)^3 gauged supergravity is presented. All known examples of such black holes arise as special cases of this solution, which is characterized by three charges and two angular momenta, with one constraint relating these five quantities. Analagous solutions of U(1)^n gauged supergravity are also presented.

Special symmetries of the charged Kerr-AdS black hole of D=5 minimal gauged supergravity

In this note we prove that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the background of the recently discovered charged Kerr-AdS black hole of D=5 minimal gauged supergravity is separable, for arbitrary values of the two rotation parameters. This allows us to write down an irreducible Killing tensor for the spacetime. As a result we also show that the Klein-Gordon equation in this background is separable. We also consider the Dirac equation in this background in the special case of equal rotation parameters and show it has separable solutions. Finally we discuss the near-horizon geometry of the supersymmetric limit of the black hole.

Integrability and the Kerr-(A)dS black hole in five dimensions

In this note we prove that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for a particle in the five dimensional Kerr-(A)dS black hole is separable, for arbitrary rotation parameters. As a result we find an irreducible Killing tensor. We also consider the Klein-Gordon equation in this background and show that this is also separable. Finally we comment on extensions and implications of these results.

Three Charge Supertubes in Type IIB Plane Wave Backgrounds

We deform the supersymmetric black ring of five dimensional supergravity coupled to N-1 vector multiplets to obtain an asymptotically Goedel supersymmetric black ring. For the U(1)^3 model we lift this solution to obtain a three charge D1-D5-P supertube which asymptotes to a 1/2 supersymmetric plane wave of Type IIB supergravity. Further, we also show how one may deform the asymptotically flat three charge supertube of type IIB, in the special case of vanishing KK dipole charge, to a three charge supertube which asymptotes to the maximally supersymmetric plane wave.

Notes on non-extremal, charged, rotating black holes in minimal D=5 gauged supergravity

We consider the non-extremal, charged, rotating black hole solution of five dimensional minimal gauged supergravity of Cvetic, Lu and Pope [Phys.Lett. B 598 (2004) 273]. We compute the Ashtekar-Magnon-Das mass and show it agrees with the thermodynamic mass. We find a reducible Killing tensor and integrate the geodesic equation explicitly. We also compute the Euclidean action of the black hole and show it satisfies the quantum statistical relation. Further we present a Smarr relation. We end with a discussion of applications to string theory.

Electrically charged dilatonic black rings

In this note we present (electrically) charged dilatonic black ring solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions and we consider their physical properties. These solutions are static and as in the neutral case possess a conical singularity. We show how one may remove the conical singularity by application of a Harrison transformation, which physically corresponds to supporting the charged ring with an electric field. Finally, we discuss the slowly rotating case for arbitrary dilaton coupling.
