Prescribed Performance Leader-Following Consensus with Event-Based Broadcasting

This paper develops a prescribed performance leader-following consensus protocol for directed networks under event-based broadcasting. Each node schedules its transmissions using only its current state and its last broadcast value, while followers use held neighbor and leader samples between broadcasts. To accommodate jumps in sampled neighborhood errors caused by asynchronous receptions, a decaying receiver-side performance correction term temporarily modifies the prescribed performance function. For a directed network containing a spanning tree rooted at a time-varying leader with bounded trajectory and derivative, we prove existence and uniqueness of complete non-Zeno solutions, boundedness of all closed-loop signals, and explicit prescribed bounds for the sampled and continuous neighborhood disagreements and the leader-following error. These bounds quantify the effects of the communication topology and broadcast thresholds. Simulations verify the prescribed performance bounds and illustrate the event-based communication mechanism.

Cooperative Control of Multiple Agents with Unknown High-frequency Gain Signs under Unbalanced and Switching Topologies

Existing results on cooperative control of multi-agent systems with unknown control directions require that the underlying topology is either fixed with a strongly connected graph or switching between different strongly connected graphs. Furthermore, in most cases the graph is assumed to be balanced. This paper proposes a new class of nonlinear PI based algorithms to relax these requirements and allow for unbalanced and switching topologies having a jointly strongly connected basis. This is made possible for single-integrator (SI) and double-integrator (DI) agents with non-identical unknown control directions by a suitable selection of the distributed nonlinear PI functions. Moreover, as a special case, the proposed algorithms are applied to strongly connected and fixed graphs. Finally, simulation examples are given to show the validity of our theoretical results.

PI Consensus Error Transformation for Adaptive Cooperative Control of Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems

A solution is provided in this note for the adaptive consensus problem of nonlinear multi-agent systems with unknown and non-identical control directions assuming a strongly connected underlying graph topology. This is achieved with the introduction of a novel variable transformation called PI consensus error transformation. %that allows for decoupled consensus control design of multi-agent systems. The new variables include the position error of each agent from some arbitrary fixed point along with an integral term of the weighted total displacement of the agent's position from all neighbor positions. It is proven that if these new variables are bounded and regulated to zero, then asymptotic consensus among all agents is ensured. The important feature of this transformation is that it provides input decoupling in the dynamics of the new error variables making the consensus control design a simple and direct task. Using classical Nussbaum gain based techniques, distributed controllers are designed to regulate the PI consensus error variables to zero and ultimately solve the agreement problem. The proposed approach also allows for a specific calculation of the final consensus point based on the controller parameter selection and the associated graph topology. Simulation results verify our theoretical derivations.

Robustness of the nonlinear PI control method to ignored actuator dynamics

This note examines the robustness properties of the nonlinear PI control method to ignored actuator dynamics. It is proven that global boundedness and regulation can be achieved for sector bounded nonlinear systems with unknown control directions if the actuator dynamics are sufficiently fast and the nonlinear PI control gain is chosen from a subclass of the Nussbaum function class. Simulation examples are also presented that demonstrate the validity of our arguments.

An extension of the Georgiou-Smith example: Boundedness and attractivity in the presence of unmodelled dynamics via nonlinear PI control

In this paper, a nonlinear extension of the Georgiou-Smith system is considered and robustness results are proved for a class of nonlinear PI controllers with respect to fast parasitic first-order dynamics. More specifically, for a perturbed nonlinear system with sector bounded nonlinearity and unknown control direction, sufficient conditions for global boundedness and attractivity have been derived. It is shown that the closed loop system is globally bounded and attractive if (i) the unmodelled dynamics are sufficiently fast and (ii) the PI control gain has the Nussbaum function property. For the case of nominally unstable systems, the Nussbaum property of the control gain appears to be crucial. A simulation study confirms the theoretical results.
