Performance Analysis of OFDM with Peak Cancellation Under EVM and ACLR Restrictions

This paper presents performance analysis of an adaptive peak cancellation method to reduce the high peak-toaverage power ratio (PAPR) for OFDM systems, while keeping the out-of-band (OoB) power leakage as well as an in-band distortion power below the pre-determined level. In this work, the increase of adjacent leakage power ratio (ACLR) and error vector magnitude (EVM) are estimated recursively using the detected peak amplitude. We present analytical framework for OFDM-based systems with theoretical bit error rate (BER) representations and detection of optimum peak threshold based on predefined EVM and ACLR requirements. Moreover, the optimum peak detection threshold is selected based on the oretical design to maintain the predefined distortion level. Thus, their degradations are automatically restricted below the pre-defined levels which correspond to target OoB radiation. We also discuss the practical design of peak-cancellation (PC) signal with target OoB radiation and in-band distortion through optimizing the windowing size of the PC signal. Numerical results show the improvements with respect to both achievable bit error rate (BER) and PAPR with the PC method in eigen-beam space division multiplexing (E-SDM) systems under restriction of OoB power radiation. It can also be seen that the theoretical BER shows good agreements with simulation results.

Codebook-Based Max-Min Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Uplink mmWave MIMO-NOMA Systems

In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient resource allocation problem in an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) millimeter wave system, where the fully-connected-based sparse radio frequency chain antenna structure is applied at the base station (BS). To relieve the pilot overhead for channel estimation, we propose a codebook-based analog beam design scheme, which only requires to obtain the equivalent channel gain. On this basis, users belonging to the same analog beam are served via NOMA. Meanwhile, an advanced NOMA decoding scheme is proposed by exploiting the global information available at the BS. Under predefined minimum rate and maximum transmit power constraints for each user, we formulate a max-min user energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem by jointly optimizing the detection matrix at the BS and transmit power at the users. We first transform the original fractional objective function into a subtractive one. Then, we propose a two-loop iterative algorithm to solve the reformulated problem. Specifically, the inner loop updates the detection matrix and transmit power iteratively, while the outer loop adopts the bisection method. Meanwhile, to decrease the complexity of the inner loop, we propose a zero-forcing (ZF)-based iterative algorithm, where the detection matrix is designed via the ZF technique. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed schemes obtain a better performance in terms of spectral efficiency and EE than the conventional schemes

Smart Radio Environments Empowered by AI Reconfigurable Meta-Surfaces: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Future wireless networks are expected to constitute a distributed intelligent wireless communications, sensing, and computing platform, which will have the challenging requirement of interconnecting the physical and digital worlds in a seamless and sustainable manner. Currently, two main factors prevent wireless network operators from building such networks: 1) the lack of control of the wireless environment, whose impact on the radio waves cannot be customized, and 2) the current operation of wireless radios, which consume a lot of power because new signals are generated whenever data has to be transmitted. In this paper, we challenge the usual "more data needs more power and emission of radio waves" status quo, and motivate that future wireless networks necessitate a smart radio environment: A transformative wireless concept, where the environmental objects are coated with artificial thin films of electromagnetic and reconfigurable material (that are referred to as intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces), which are capable of sensing the environment and of applying customized transformations to the radio waves. Smart radio environments have the potential to provide future wireless networks with uninterrupted wireless connectivity, and with the capability of transmitting data without generating new signals but recycling existing radio waves. This paper overviews the current research efforts on smart radio environments, the enabling technologies to realize them in practice, the need of new communication-theoretic models for their analysis and design, and the long-term and open research issues to be solved towards their massive deployment. In a nutshell, this paper is focused on discussing how the availability of intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces will allow wireless network operators to redesign common and well-known network communication paradigms.

Performance Evaluation of Multi-hop Relaying over Non-Gaussian PLC Channels

Relaying over power line communication (PLC) channels can considerably enhance the performance and reliability of PLC systems. This paper is dedicated to study and analyze the energy efficiency of multi-hop cooperative relaying PLC systems. Incremental decode-and-forward (IDF) relying is exploited to reduce the transmit power consumption. The PLC channel is assumed to experience log-normal fading with impulsive noise. The performances of single-hop and conventional DF relaying systems are also analyzed in terms of outage probability and energy efficiency for which analytical expressions are derived. Results show that using more relays can improve the outage probability performance; however, this is achieved at the expense of increased power consumption due to the increased static power of the relays, especially when the total source-to-destination distance is relatively small. Results also demonstrate that the IDF PLC system has better energy efficiency performance compared to the other schemes.

An Overview of Machine Learning Approaches in Wireless Mesh Networks

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have been extensively studied for nearly two decades as one of the most promising candidates expected to power the high bandwidth, high coverage wireless networks of the future. However, consumer demand for such networks has only recently caught up, rendering efforts at optimizing WMNs to support high capacities and offer high QoS, while being secure and fault tolerant, more important than ever. To this end, a recent trend has been the application of Machine Learning (ML) to solve various design and management tasks related to WMNs. In this work, we discuss key ML techniques and analyze how past efforts have applied them in WMNs, while noting some existing issues and suggesting potential solutions. We also provide directions on how ML could advance future research and examine recent developments in the field.

Decentralized Asynchronous Coded Caching in Fog-RAN

In this paper, we investigate asynchronous coded caching in fog radio access networks (F-RAN). To minimize the fronthaul load, the encoding set collapsing rule and encoding set partition method are proposed to establish the relationship between the coded-multicasting contents in asynchronous and synchronous coded caching. Furthermore, a decentralized asynchronous coded caching scheme is proposed, which provides asynchronous and synchronous transmission methods for different delay requirements. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme creates considerable coded-multicasting opportunities in asynchronous request scenarios.

Artificial Intelligence Inspired Self-Deployment of Wireless Networks

In this paper, we propose a self-deployment approach for finding the optimal placement of extenders in which both the wireless back-haul and front-haul throughput of the extender are optimized. We present an artificial intelligence (AI) case based reasoning (CBR) framework that enables autonomous self-deployment in which the network can learn the environment by means of sensing and perception. New actions, i.e. extender positions, are created by problem-specific optimization and semi-supervised learning algorithms that balance exploration and exploitation of the search space. An IEEE 802.11 standard compliant simulations are performed to evaluate the framework on a large scale and compare its performance against existing conventional coverage maximization approaches. Experimental evaluation is also performed in an enterprise environment to demonstrate the competence of the proposed AI-framework in perceiving such a dense scenario and reason the extender deployment that achieves user quality of service (QoS). Throughput fairness and ubiquitous QoS satisfaction are achieved which provide a leap to apply AI-driven self-deployment in wireless networks.

Self-X Design of Wireless Networks: Exploiting Artificial Intelligence and Guided Learning

In this work, we develop a framework that jointly decides on the optimal location of wireless extenders and the channel configuration of extenders and access points (APs) in a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). Typically, the rule-based approaches in the literature result in limited exploration while reinforcement learning based approaches result in slow convergence. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is adopted to support network autonomy and to capture insights on system and environment evolution. We propose a Self-X (self-optimizing and self-learning) framework that encapsulates both environment and intelligent agent to reach optimal operation through sensing, perception, reasoning and learning in a truly autonomous fashion. The agent derives adequate knowledge from previous actions improving the quality of future decisions. Domain experience was provided to guide the agent while exploring and exploiting the set of possible actions in the environment. Thus, it guarantees a low-cost learning and achieves a near-optimal network configuration addressing the non-deterministic polynomial-time hardness (NP-hard) problem of joint channel assignment and location optimization in WMNs. Extensive simulations are run to validate its fast convergence, high throughput and resilience to dynamic interference conditions. We deploy the framework on off-the-shelf wireless devices to enable autonomous self-optimization and self-deployment, using APs and wireless extenders.
