Covariant 4-dimensional fuzzy spheres, matrix models and higher spin

We study in detail generalized 4-dimensional fuzzy spheres with twisted extra dimensions. These spheres can be viewed as $SO(5)$-equivariant projections of quantized coadjoint orbits of $SO(6)$. We show that they arise as solutions in Yang-Mills matrix models, which naturally leads to higher-spin gauge theories on $S^4$. Several types of embeddings in matrix models are found, including one with self-intersecting fuzzy extra dimensions $S^4 \times \mathcal{K}$, which is expected to entail 2+1 generations.

Emergent gravity on covariant quantum spaces in the IKKT model

We study perturbations of 4-dimensional fuzzy spheres as backgrounds in the IKKT or IIB matrix model. Gauge fields and metric fluctuations are identified among the excitation modes with lowest spin, supplemented by a tower of higher-spin fields. They arise from an internal structure which can be viewed as a twisted bundle over $S^4$, leading to a covariant noncommutative geometry. The linearized 4-dimensional Einstein equations are obtained from the classical matrix model action under certain conditions, modified by an IR cutoff. Some one-loop contributions to the effective action are computed using the formalism of string states.

String states, loops and effective actions in noncommutative field theory and matrix models

Refining previous work by Iso, Kawai and Kitazawa, we discuss bi-local string states as a tool for loop computations in noncommutative field theory and matrix models. Defined in terms of coherent states, they exhibit the stringy features of noncommutative field theory. This leads to a closed form for the 1-loop effective action in position space, capturing the long-range non-local UV/IR mixing for scalar fields. The formalism applies to generic fuzzy spaces. The non-locality is tamed in the maximally supersymmetric IKKT or IIB model, where it gives rise to supergravity. The linearized supergravity interactions are obtained directly in position space at one loop using string states on generic noncommutative branes.

Measuring finite Quantum Geometries via Quasi-Coherent States

We develop a systematic approach to determine and measure numerically the geometry of generic quantum or "fuzzy" geometries realized by a set of finite-dimensional hermitian matrices. The method is designed to recover the semi-classical limit of quantized symplectic spaces embedded in $\mathbb{R}^d$ including the well-known examples of fuzzy spaces, but it applies much more generally. The central tool is provided by quasi-coherent states, which are defined as ground states of Laplace- or Dirac operators corresponding to localized point branes in target space. The displacement energy of these quasi-coherent states is used to extract the local dimension and tangent space of the semi-classical geometry, and provides a measure for the quality and self-consistency of the semi-classical approximation. The method is discussed and tested with various examples, and implemented in an open-source Mathematica package.

One-loop stabilization of the fuzzy four-sphere via softly broken SUSY

We describe a stabilization mechanism for fuzzy $S^4_N$ in the Euclidean IIB matrix model due to vacuum energy in the presence of a positive mass term. The one-loop effective potential for the radius contains an attractive contribution attributed to supergravity, while the mass term induces a repulsive contribution for small radius due to SUSY breaking. This leads to a stabilization of the radius. The mechanism should be pertinent to recent results on the genesis of 3+1-dimensional space-time in the Minkowskian IIB model.

Chiral low-energy physics from squashed branes in deformed ${\cal N}=4$ SYM

We discuss the low-energy physics which arises on stacks of squashed brane solutions of $SU(N)$ ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, deformed by a cubic soft SUSY breaking potential. A brane configuration is found which leads to a low-energy physics similar to the standard model in the broken phase, assuming suitable VEV's of the scalar zero modes. Due to the triple self-intersection of the branes, the matter content includes that of the MSSM with precisely 3 generations and right-handed neutrinos. No exotic quantum numbers arise, however there are extra chiral superfields with the quantum numbers of the Higgs doublets, the $W,Z$, $e_R$ and $u_R$, whose fate depends on the details of the rich Higgs sector. The chiral low-energy sector is complemented by a heavy mirror sector with the opposite chiralities, as well as super-massive Kaluza-Klein towers completing the ${\cal N}=4$ multiplets. The sectors are protected by two gauged global $U(1)$ symmetries.

The squashed fuzzy sphere, fuzzy strings and the Landau problem

We discuss the squashed fuzzy sphere, which is a projection of the fuzzy sphere onto the equatorial plane, and use it to illustrate the stringy aspects of noncommutative field theory. We elaborate explicitly how strings linking its two coincident sheets arise in terms of fuzzy spherical harmonics. In the large N limit, the matrix-model Laplacian is shown to correctly reproduce the semi-classical dynamics of these charged strings, as given by the Landau problem.

Spinning squashed extra dimensions and chiral gauge theory from $\cal{N}=4$ SYM

New solutions of $SU(N)$ ${\cal N}=4$ SYM on $\mathbb{R}^4$ interpreted as spinning self-intersecting extra dimensions are discussed. Remarkably, these backgrounds lead to a low-energy sector with 3 generations of chiral fermions coupled to scalar and gauge fields, with standard Lorentz-invariant kinematics. This sector arises from zero modes localized on the rotation axes, which are oblivious to the background rotation. The remaining modes are not described by a Lorentz-invariant field theory and are mostly "heavy", but there is one sextet of tachyonic excitations. Assuming that the latter get stabilized e.g. by quantum effects, we argue that different rotation frequencies would induce a VEV for some of the low-energy scalar fields. We discuss configurations which may lead to a low-energy physics not far from the broken phase of the standard model.

Self-intersecting fuzzy extra dimensions from squashed coadjoint orbits in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and matrix models

We find new vacuum solutions of ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills with totally anti-symmetric cubic soft SUSY breaking terms, or equivalently solutions of the IKKT matrix model of type $\mathbb{R}^4_θ\times {\cal K}_N$ with flux terms. The solutions can be understood in terms of 4- and 6- dimensional fuzzy branes ${\cal K}_N$ in extra dimensions, describing self-intersecting projections of compact flag manifolds of $SU(3)$. The 6-dimensional solutions provide a 6-fold covering of the internal space near the origin, while the 4-dimensional branes have a triple self-intersections spanning all 6 internal directions. The solutions have lower energy than the trivial vacuum, and we prove that there are no negative modes. The massless modes are identified explicitly. In particular there are chiral fermionic zero modes, linking the coincident sheets with opposite flux at the origin. They have a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ family symmetry, originating from the Weyl group rotations.

An extended standard model and its Higgs geometry from the matrix model

We find a simple brane configuration in the IKKT matrix model which resembles the standard model at low energies, with a second Higgs doublet and right-handed neutrinos. The electroweak sector is realized geometrically in terms of two minimal fuzzy ellipsoids, which can be interpreted in terms of four point-branes in the extra dimensions. The electroweak Higgs connects these branes and is an indispensable part of the geometry. Fermionic would-be zero modes arise at the intersections with two larger branes, leading precisely to the correct chiral matter fields at low energy, along with right-handed neutrinos which can acquire a Majorana mass due to a Higgs singlet. The larger branes give rise to $SU(3)_c$, extended by $U(1)_B$ and another $U(1)$ which are anomalous at low energies and expected to disappear. At higher energies, mirror fermions and additional fields arise, completing the full ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry. The brane configuration is a solution of the model, assuming a suitable effective potential and a non-linear stabilization of the singlet Higgs. The basic results can be carried over to ${\cal N}=4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills on ordinary Minkowski space with sufficiently large $N$.

Compactified rotating branes in the matrix model, and excitation spectrum towards one loop

We study compactified brane solutions of type R^4 x K in the IIB matrix model, and obtain explicitly the bosonic and fermionic fluctuation spectrum required to compute the one-loop effective action. We verify that the one-loop contributions are UV finite for R^4 x T^2, and supersymmetric for R^3 x S^1. The higher Kaluza-Klein modes are shown to have a gap in the presence of flux on T^2, and potential problems concerning stability are discussed.
