On matrix geometry

The foundations of matrix geometry are discussed, which provides the basis for recent progress on the effective geometry and gravity in Yang-Mills matrix models. Basic examples lead to a notion of embedded noncommutative spaces (branes) with emergent Riemannian geometry. This class of configurations turns out to be preserved under small deformations, and is therefore appropriate for matrix models. The relation with spectral geometry is discussed. A possible realization of sufficiently generic 4-dimensional geometries as noncommutative branes in D=10 matrix models is sketched.

Heat kernel expansion and induced action for the matrix model Dirac operator

We compute the quantum effective action induced by integrating out fermions in Yang-Mills matrix models on a 4-dimensional background, expanded in powers of a gauge-invariant UV cutoff. The resulting action is recast into the form of generalized matrix models, manifestly preserving the SO(D) symmetry of the bare action. This provides noncommutative (NC) analogs of the Seeley-de Witt coefficients for the emergent gravity which arises on NC branes, such as curvature terms. From the gauge theory point of view, this provides strong evidence that the NC N=4 SYM has a hidden SO(10) symmetry even at the quantum level, which is spontaneously broken by the space-time background. The geometrical view proves to be very powerful, and allows to predict non-trivial loop computations in the gauge theory.

Curvature and Gravity Actions for Matrix Models II: the case of general Poisson structure

We study the geometrical meaning of higher-order terms in matrix models of Yang-Mills type in the semi-classical limit, generalizing recent results arXiv:1003.4132 to the case of 4-dimensional space-time geometries with general Poisson structure. Such terms are expected to arise e.g. upon quantization of the IKKT-type models. We identify terms which depend only on the intrinsic geometry and curvature, including modified versions of the Einstein-Hilbert action, as well as terms which depend on the extrinsic curvature. Furthermore, a mechanism is found which implies that the effective metric G on the space-time brane M \subset R^D "almost" coincides with the induced metric g. Deviations from G=g are suppressed, and characterized by the would-be U(1) gauge field.

Orbifolds, fuzzy spheres and chiral fermions

Starting with a N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions with gauge group SU(3N) we perform an orbifold projection leading to a N=1 supersymmetric SU(N)^3 Yang-Mills theory with matter supermultiplets in bifundamental representations of the gauge group, which is chiral and anomaly free. Subsequently, we search for vacua of the projected theory which can be interpreted as spontaneously generated twisted fuzzy spheres. We show that by adding the appropriate soft supersymmetry breaking terms we can indeed reveal such vacua. Three cases are studied, where the gauge group is spontaneously broken further to the low-energy gauge groups SU(4)xSU(2)xSU(2), SU(4)^3 and SU(3)^3. Such models behave in intermediate scales as higher-dimensional theories with a finite Kaluza-Klein tower, while their low-energy physics is governed by the corresponding zero-modes and exhibit chirality in the fermionic sector. The most interesting case from the phenomenological point of view turns out to be the SU(3)^3 unified theory, which has several interesting features such as (i) it can be promoted to a finite theory, (ii) it breaks further spontaneously first to the MSSM and then to SU(3)xU(1)_{em} due to its own scalar sector, i.e. without the need of additional superfields and (iii) the corresponding vacua lead to spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres.

Curvature and Gravity Actions for Matrix Models

We show how gravitational actions, in particular the Einstein-Hilbert action, can be obtained from additional terms in Yang-Mills matrix models. This is consistent with recent results on induced gravitational actions in these matrix models, realizing space-time as 4-dimensional brane solutions. It opens up the possibility for a controlled non-perturbative description of gravity through simple matrix models, with interesting perspectives for the problem of vacuum energy. The relation with UV/IR mixing and non-commutative gauge theory is discussed.

Schwarzschild Geometry Emerging from Matrix Models

We demonstrate how various geometries can emerge from Yang-Mills type matrix models with branes, and consider the examples of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstroem geometry. We provide an explicit embedding of these branes in R^{2,5} and R^{4,6}, as well as an appropriate Poisson resp. symplectic structure which determines the non-commutativity of space-time. The embedding is asymptotically flat with asymptotically constant θ^{μν} for large r, and therefore suitable for a generalization to many-body configurations. This is an illustration of our previous work arXiv:1003.4132, where we have shown how the Einstein-Hilbert action can be realized within such matrix models.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking in Matrix Models

We argue that some features of the standard model, in particular the fermion assignment and symmetry breaking, can be obtained in matrix model which describes noncommutative gauge theory as well as gravity in an emergent way. The mechanism is based on the presence of some extra (matrix) dimensions. These extra dimensions are different from the usual ones which give to a noncommutative geometry of the Gronewold-Moyal type, and are reminiscent of the Connes-Lott model, although the action is very different.

Matrix Models, Emergent Spacetime and Symmetry Breaking

We discuss how a matrix model recently shown to describe emergent gravity may contain extra degrees of freedom which reproduce some characteristics of the standard model, in particular the breaking of symmetries and the correct quantum numbers of fermions.

Noncommutative gauge theory and symmetry breaking in matrix models

We show how the fields and particles of the standard model can be naturally realized in noncommutative gauge theory. Starting with a Yang-Mills matrix model in more than 4 dimensions, a SU(n) gauge theory on a Moyal-Weyl space arises with all matter and fields in the adjoint of the gauge group. We show how this gauge symmetry can be broken spontaneously down to SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Q (resp. SU(3)_c x U(1)_Q), which couples appropriately to all fields in the standard model. An additional U(1)_B gauge group arises which is anomalous at low energies, while the trace-U(1) sector is understood in terms of emergent gravity. A number of additional fields arise which we assume to be massive, in a pattern that is reminiscent of supersymmetry. The symmetry breaking might arise via spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres, in which case the mechanism is similar to brane constructions in string theory.

Fermions and noncommutative emergent gravity II: Curved branes in extra dimensions

We study fermions coupled to Yang-Mills matrix models from the point of view of emergent gravity. The matrix model Dirac operator provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to the effective gravitational metric for general branes with nontrivial embedding, albeit with a non-standard spin connection. This generalizes previous results for 4-dimensional matrix models. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action of the effective metric, as well as additional terms which couple the Poisson tensor to the Riemann tensor, and a dilaton-like term.

Emergent Gravity and Noncommutative Branes from Yang-Mills Matrix Models

The framework of emergent gravity arising from Yang-Mills matrix models is developed further, for general noncommutative branes embedded in R^D. The effective metric on the brane turns out to have a universal form reminiscent of the open string metric, depending on the dynamical Poisson structure and the embedding metric in R^D. A covariant form of the tree-level equations of motion is derived, and the Newtonian limit is discussed. This points to the necessity of branes in higher dimensions. The quantization is discussed qualitatively, which singles out the IKKT model as a prime candidate for a quantum theory of gravity coupled to matter. The Planck scale is then identified with the scale of N=4 SUSY breaking. A mechanism for avoiding the cosmological constant problem is exhibited.

On the Newtonian limit of emergent NC gravity and long-distance corrections

We show how Newtonian gravity emerges on 4-dimensional non-commutative spacetime branes in Yang-Mills matrix models. Large matter clusters such as galaxies are embedded in large-scale harmonic deformations of the space-time brane, which screen gravity for long distances. On shorter scales, the local matter distribution reproduces Newtonian gravity via local deformations of the brane and its metric. The harmonic ``gravity bag'' acts as a halo with effective positive energy density. This leads in particular to a significant enhancement of the orbital velocities around galaxies at large distances compared with the Newtonian case, before dropping to zero as the geometry merges with a Milne-like cosmology. Besides these ``harmonic'' solutions, there is another class of solutions which is more similar to Einstein gravity. Thus the IKKT model provides an accessible candidate for a quantum theory of gravity.

On the fermion spectrum of spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions with fluxes

We consider certain vacua of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with the same field content as the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, resulting from potentials which break the N=4 supersymmetry as well as its global SO(6) symmetry down to SO(3) x SO(3). We show that the theory behaves at intermediate scales as Yang-Mills theory on M^4 x S^2 x S^2, where the extra dimensions are fuzzy spheres with magnetic fluxes. We determine in particular the structure of the zero modes due to the fluxes, which leads to low-energy mirror models.

Cosmological solutions of emergent noncommutative gravity

Matrix models of Yang-Mills type lead to an emergent gravity theory, which may not require fine-tuning of a cosmological constant. We find cosmological solutions of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker type. They generically have a big bounce, and an early inflation-like phase with graceful exit. The mechanism is purely geometrical, no ad-hoc scalar fields are introduced. The solutions are stabilized through vacuum fluctuations and are thus compatible with quantum mechanics. This leads to a Milne-like universe after inflation, which appears to be in remarkably good agreement with observation and may provide an alternative to standard cosmology.

Matrix Models, Emergent Gravity, and Gauge Theory

Matrix models of Yang-Mills type induce an effective gravity theory on 4-dimensional branes, which are considered as models for dynamical space-time. We review recent progress in the understanding of this emergent gravity. The metric is not fundamental but arises effectively in the semi-classical limit, along with nonabelian gauge fields. This leads to a mechanism for protecting certain geometries from corrections due to the vacuum energy.

Fermions Coupled to Emergent Noncommutative Gravity

We study the coupling of fermions to Yang-Mills matrix models in the framework of emergent noncommutative gravity. It is shown that the matrix model action provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to gravity, albeit with a non-standard spin-connection. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action for on-shell geometries plus a dilaton-like term. This result explains UV/IR mixing as a gravity effect. It also illuminates why UV/IR mixing remains even in supersymmetric models, except in the N=4 case.

Covariant Field Equations, Gauge Fields and Conservation Laws from Yang-Mills Matrix Models

The effective geometry and the gravitational coupling of nonabelian gauge and scalar fields on generic NC branes in Yang-Mills matrix models is determined. Covariant field equations are derived from the basic matrix equations of motions, known as Yang-Mills algebra. Remarkably, the equations of motion for the Poisson structure and for the nonabelian gauge fields follow from a matrix Noether theorem, and are therefore protected from quantum corrections. This provides a transparent derivation and generalization of the effective action governing the SU(n) gauge fields obtained in [1], including the would-be topological term. In particular, the IKKT matrix model is capable of describing 4-dimensional NC space-times with a general effective metric. Metric deformations of flat Moyal-Weyl space are briefly discussed.

Fermions and Emergent Noncommutative Gravity

Fermions coupled to Yang-Mills matrix models are studied from the point of view of emergent gravity. We show that the simple matrix model action provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to gravity, albeit with a non-standard spin connection. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action and a dilaton-like term, at least for on-shell geometries. This explains and precisely reproduces the UV/IR mixing for fermions in noncommutative gauge theory, extending recent results for scalar fields. It also explains why some UV/IR mixing remains even in supersymmetric models, except in the N=4 case.
