Degeneracy locus formulas for amenable Weyl group elements

We define a class of amenable Weyl group elements in the Lie types B, C, and D, which we propose as the analogues of vexillary permutations in these Lie types. Our amenable signed permutations index flagged theta and eta polynomials, which generalize the double theta and eta polynomials of Wilson and the author. In geometry, we obtain corresponding formulas for the cohomology classes of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

Tableau formulas for skew Schubert polynomials

The skew Schubert polynomials are those which are indexed by skew elements of the Weyl group, in the sense of arXiv:0812.0639. We obtain tableau formulas for the double versions of these polynomials in all four classical Lie types, where the tableaux used are fillings of the associated skew Young diagram. These are the first such theorems for symplectic and orthogonal Schubert polynomials, even in the single case. We also deduce tableau formulas for double Schur, double theta, and double eta polynomials, in their specializations as double Grassmannian Schubert polynomials. The latter results generalize the tableau formulas for symmetric (and single) Schubert polynomials due to Littlewood (in type A) and the author (in types B, C, and D).

Tableau formulas for skew Grothendieck polynomials

An element of a Weyl group of classical type is skew if it is the left factor in a reduced factorization of a Grassmannian element. The skew Grothendieck polynomials are those which are indexed by skew elements of the Weyl group. We define set-valued tableaux which are fillings of the associated skew Young diagrams and use them to prove tableau formulas for the skew double Grothendieck polynomials in all four classical Lie types. We deduce tableau formulas for the Grassmannian Grothendieck polynomials and the K-theoretic analogues of the (double mixed) skew Stanley functions in the respective Lie types.

The roots of mathematical thought

In this paper, I explore what mathematical research can tell us about ourselves, and our role in the world, using examples from my own experience. The paper is a sequel to my piece "Mathematics is a Quest for Truth", published in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society in 2014.

Theta and eta polynomials in geometry, Lie theory, and combinatorics

The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.

Schubert polynomials, theta and eta polynomials, and Weyl group invariants

We examine the relationship between the (double) Schubert polynomials of Billey-Haiman and Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse and the (double) theta and eta polynomials of Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis and Wilson from the perspective of Weyl group invariants. We obtain generators for the kernel of the natural map from the corresponding ring of Schubert polynomials to the (equivariant) cohomology ring of symplectic and orthogonal flag manifolds.

Schubert polynomials and degeneracy locus formulas

In our previous work arXiv:1305.3543, we employed the approach to Schubert polynomials by Fomin, Stanley, and Kirillov to obtain simple, uniform proofs that the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schutzenberger and Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse represent degeneracy loci for the classical groups in the sense of Fulton. Using this as our starting point, and purely combinatorial methods, we obtain a new proof of the general formulas of arXiv:0908.3628, which represent the degeneracy loci coming from any isotropic partial flag variety. Along the way, we also find several new formulas and elucidate the connections between some earlier ones.

The puzzle conjecture for the cohomology of two-step flag manifolds

We prove a conjecture of Knutson asserting that the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology ring of a two-step flag variety are equal to the number of puzzles with specified border labels that can be created using a list of eight puzzle pieces. As a consequence, we obtain a puzzle formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants defining the small quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmann variety of type A. The proof of the conjecture proceeds by showing that the puzzle formula defines an associative product on the cohomology ring of the two-step flag variety. It is based on an explicit bijection of gashed puzzles that is analogous to the jeu de taquin algorithm but more complicated.

Giambelli and degeneracy locus formulas for classical G/P spaces

Let G be a classical complex Lie group, P any parabolic subgroup of G, and X = G/P the corresponding homogeneous space, which parametrizes (isotropic) partial flags of subspaces of a fixed vector space. In the mid 1990s, Fulton, Pragacz, and Ratajski asked for global formulas which express the cohomology classes of the universal Schubert varieties in flag bundles -- when the space X varies in an algebraic family -- in terms of the Chern classes of the vector bundles involved in their definition. This has applications to the theory of degeneracy loci of vector bundles and is closely related to the Giambelli problem for the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of X. In this article, we explain the answer to these questions which was obtained in arXiv:0908.3628, in terms of combinatorial data coming from the Weyl group.

Double theta polynomials and equivariant Giambelli formulas

We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double theta polynomials, which specialize to both the theta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis, and to double (or factorial) Schur S-polynomials and Q-polynomials. These double theta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of symplectic Grassmannians, and we employ them to obtain a new presentation of this ring in terms of intrinsic generators and relations.

A Giambelli formula for classical $G/P$ spaces

Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

A tableau formula for eta polynomials

We use the Pieri and Giambelli formulas of arXiv:0809.4966 and arXiv:1109.6669 and the calculus of raising operators developed in arXiv:0811.2781 and arXiv:0812.0639 to prove a tableau formula for eta polynomials of arXiv:1109.6669 and the Stanley symmetric functions which correspond to Grassmannian elements of the Weyl group $W_n$ of type $D_n$. We define the skew elements of $W_n$ and exhibit a bijection between the set of reduced words for any skew element $w$ in $W_n$ and a set of certain standard typed tableaux on a skew shape $λ/μ$ associated to $w$.

Giambelli, Pieri, and tableau formulas via raising operators

We give a direct proof of the equivalence between the Giambelli and Pieri type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions using Young's raising operators, parallel to joint work with Buch and Kresch for the Schubert classes on isotropic Grassmannians. We prove several closely related mirror identities enjoyed by the Giambelli polynomials, which lead to new recursions for Schubert classes. The raising operator approach is applied to obtain tableau formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions, theta polynomials, and related Stanley symmetric functions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a skew element w of the hyperoctahedral group and identify the set of reduced words for w with the set of standard k-tableaux on a skew Young diagram.

Schubert polynomials and Arakelov theory of orthogonal flag varieties

We propose a theory of combinatorially explicit Schubert polynomials which represent the Schubert classes in the Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of orthogonal flag varieties. We use these polynomials to describe the arithmetic Schubert calculus on these spaces. We also give a method to compute the natural arithmetic intersection numbers which arise, and prove that they are all rational numbers.

The theory of Schur polynomials revisited

We use Young's raising operators to give short and uniform proofs of several well known results about Schur polynomials and symmetric functions, starting from the Jacobi-Trudi identity.

The connection between representation theory and Schubert calculus

We describe a direct connection between the representation theory of the general linear group and classical Schubert calculus on the Grassmannian, which goes via the Chern-Weil theory of characteristic classes. We also explain why the analogous constructions do not give the same result for other Lie groups.

Schubert polynomials and Arakelov theory of symplectic flag varieties

Let X be the flag variety of the symplectic group. We propose a theory of combinatorially explicit Schubert polynomials which represent the Schubert classes in the Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of X. We use these polynomials to describe the arithmetic Schubert calculus on X. Moreover, we give a method to compute the natural arithmetic Chern numbers on X, and show that they are all rational numbers.

A Giambelli formula for even orthogonal Grassmannians

Let X be an orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in an even dimensional vector space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the singular and quantum cohomology ring of X as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. Our analysis reveals a surprising relation between the Schubert calculus on even and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. We also study eta polynomials, a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X.
