Parameter-robust well-posedness and discretisation for coupled Darcy--Forchheimer and advection-diffusion-reaction equations

We adapt the recent theory for unique solvability of perturbed saddle-point problems in Banach spaces to the case of parameter-independent stability bounds. This also constitutes an extension to the Brezzi--Braess theory for parameter-robust stability of perturbed saddle-point problems from the Hilbert to the Banach setting. We apply the new abstract result to the mixed formulation of the advection-diffusion-reaction equation and tackle also its coupling with the Darcy--Forchheimer equations. The complete system is shown to be stable irrespective of the model parameters of permeability, Forchheimer coefficient, and reaction modulation. We discretise the problem with mixed finite element methods and show convergence in appropriately parameter-weighted norms. We also design operator-based preconditioners for the full system, utilising weighted norms that provide robustness with respect to model parameters.

Robust stability and preconditioning of Darcy-Forchheimer equations

We derive parameter-robust quasi-optimal error estimates for mixed finite element methods for the nonlinear Darcy--Forchheimer equations with mixed boundary conditions. Using the framework of operator preconditioning, we also design efficient block preconditioners for the linearised system, that exhibit robustness with respect to the coefficients that modulate permeability and inertia of the system. The properties of the formulation (parameter and mesh-size independence of the convergence rates) are illustrated by means of several numerical examples.

Error Estimates for Discontinuous Galerkin Approximations to the Vlasov-Unsteady Stokes System

In the first part of this paper, uniqueness of strong solution is established for the Vlasov-unsteady Stokes problem in 3D. The second part deals with a semi discrete scheme, which is based on the coupling of discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the Vlasov and the Stokes equations for the 2D problem. The proposed method is both mass and momentum conservative. Based on a special projection and also the Stokes projection, optimal error estimates in the case of smooth compactly supported initial data are derived. Moreover, the generalization of error estimates to 3D problem is also indicated. Finally, based on time splitting algorithm, some numerical experiments are conducted whose results confirm our theoretical findings.

On a Completely Discrete Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Incompressible Chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes Equations

This paper deals with a fully discrete numerical scheme for the incompressible Chemotaxis(Keller-Segel)-Navier-Stokes system. Based on a discontinuous Galerkin finite element scheme in the spatial directions, a semi-implicit first-order finite difference method in the temporal direction is applied to derive a completely discrete scheme. With the help of a new projection, optimal error estimates in $L^2$ and $H^1$-norms for the cell density, the concentration of chemical substances and the fluid velocity are derived. Further, optimal error bound in $L^2$-norm for the fluid pressure is obtained. Finally, some numerical simulations are performed, whose results confirm the theoretical findings.

Convergence to equilibrium for a degenerate triangular reaction-diffusion system

In this article we study a reaction diffusion system with $m$ unknown concentration. The non-linearity in our study comes from an underlying reversible chemical reaction and triangular in nature. Our objective is to understand the large time behaviour of solution where there are degeneracies. In particular we treat those cases when one of the diffusion coefficient is zero and others are strictly positive. We prove convergence to equilibrium type of results under some condition on stoichiometric coefficients in dimension $1$,$2$ and $3$ in correspondence with the existence of classical solution. For dimension greater than 3 we prove similar result under certain closeness condition on the non-zero diffusion coefficients and with the same condition imposed on stoichiometric coefficients. All the constant occurs in the decay estimates are explicit.

Convergence to equilibrium for a degenerate three species reaction-diffusion system

In this work, we study a $3\times 3$ triangular reaction-diffusion system. Our main objective is to understand the long time behaviour of solutions to this reaction-diffusion system when there are degeneracies. More precisely, we treat cases when one of the diffusion coefficients vanishes while the other two diffusion coefficients stay positive. We prove convergence to equilibrium type results. In all our results, the constants appearing in the decay estimates are explicit.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Vlasov-Stokes' system

This paper develops and analyses semi-discrete numerical method for two dimensional Vlasov-Stokes' system with periodic boundary condition. The method is based on coupling of semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method for the Vlasov equation with discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the stationary incompressible Stokes' equation. The proposed method is both mass and momentum conservative. Since it is difficult to establish non-negativity of the discrete local density, the generalized discrete Stokes' operator become non-coercive and indefinite and under smallness condition on the discretization parameter, optimal error estimates are established with help of a modified the Stokes' projection to deal with Stokes' part and with the help of a special projection to tackle the Vlasov part. Finally, numerical experiments based on the dG method combined with a splitting algorithm are performed.

Periodic Vlasov-Stokes' system: Existence and Uniqueness of strong solutions

This paper deals with the Vlasov-Stokes' system in three dimensions with periodic boundary conditions in the spatial variable. We prove the existence of a unique strong solution to this two-phase model under the assumption that initial velocity moments of certain order are bounded. We use a fixed point argument to arrive at a global-in-time solution.

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods with Generalized Numerical Fluxes for the Vlasov-Viscous Burgers' System

In this paper, semi-discrete numerical scheme for the approximation of the periodic Vlasov-viscous Burgers' system is developed and analyzed. The scheme is based on the coupling of discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the Vlasov equation and local discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the viscous Burgers' equation. Both these methods use generalized numerical fluxes. The proposed scheme is both mass and momentum conservative. Based on generalized Gauss-Radau projections, optimal rates of convergence in the case of smooth compactly supported initial data are derived. Finally, computational results confirm our theoretical findings.

Quantitative Geometric Control in Linear Kinetic Theory

We consider general linear kinetic equations combining transport and a linear collision on the kinetic variable with a spatial weight that can vanish on part of the domain. The considered transport operators include external potential forces and boundary conditions, e.g. specular, diffusive and Maxwell conditions. The considered collision operators include the linear relaxation (scattering) and the Fokker-Planck operators and the boundary conditions include specular, diffusive and Maxwell conditions. We prove quantitative estimates of exponential stabilisation (spectral gap) under a geometric control condition. The argument is new and relies entirely on trajectories and weighted functional inequalities on the divergence operators. The latter functional inequalities are of independent interest and imply quantitatively weighted Stokes and Korn inequalities. We finally show that uniform control conditions are not always necessary for the existence of a spectral gap when the equation is hypoelliptic, and prove weaker control conditions in this case.

Trajectorial hypocoercivity and application to control theory

We present the quantitative method of the recent work arXiv:2209.09340 in a simple setting, together with a compactness argument that was not included in arXiv:2209.09340 and has interest per se. We are concerned with the exponential stabilization (spectral gap) for linear kinetic equations with degenerate thermalization, i.e. when the collision operator vanishes on parts of the spatial domain. The method in arXiv:2209.09340 covers both scattering and Fokker-Planck type operators, and deals with external potential and boundary conditions, but in these notes we present only its core argument and restrict ourselves to the kinetic Fokker-Planck in the periodic torus with unit velocities and a thermalization degeneracy. This equation is not covered by the previous results of Bernard and Salvarani (2013), Han-Kwan and Léautaud (2015), Evans and Moyano (arXiv:1907.12836).

Homogenization in the energy variable for a neutron transport model

This article addresses the homogenization of linear Boltzmann equation when the optical parameters are highly heterogeneous in the energy variable. We employ the method of two-scale convergence to arrive at the homogenization result. In doing so, we show the induction of a memory effect in the homogenization limit. We also provide some numerical experiments to illustrate our results. In the Appendix, we treat a related case of the harmonic oscillator.

The influence of building interactions on seismic and elastic surface waves

We outline some recent research advances on the control of elastic waves in thin and thick plates, that have occurred since the large scale experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 133901, 2014] that demonstrated significant interaction of surface seismic waves with holes structuring sedimentary soils at the meter scale. We further investigate the seismic wave trajectories in soils structured with buildings. A significant substitution of soils by inclusions, acting as foundations, raises the question of the effective dynamic properties of these structured soils. Buildings, in the case of perfect elastic conditions for both soil and buildings, are shown to interact and strongly influence elastic surface waves; such site-city seismic interactions were pointed out in [Bulletin of Seismological Society of America 92, 794-811, 2002], and we investigate a variety of scenarios to illustrate the variety of behaviours possible.

On near-cloaking for linear elasticity

We make precise some results on the cloaking of displacement fields in linear elasticity. In the spirit of transformation media theory, the transformed governing equations in Cosserat and Willis frameworks are shown to be equivalent to certain high contrast small defect problems for the usual Navier equations. We discuss near-cloaking for elasticity systems via a regularized transform and perform numerical experiments to illustrate our near-cloaking results. We also study the sharpness of the estimates from [H. Ammari, H. Kang, K. Kim and H. Lee, J. Diff. Eq. 254, 4446-4464 (2013)], wherein the convergence of the solutions to the transmission problems is investigated, when the Lamé parameters in the inclusion tend to extreme values. Both soft and hard inclusion limits are studied and we also touch upon the finite frequency case. Finally, we propose an approximate isotropic cloak algorithm for a symmetrized Cosserat cloak.

Maxwell-Stefan diffusion asymptotic for gas mixtures in non-isothermal setting

A mathematical model is proposed where the classical Maxwell-Stefan diffusion model for gas mixtures is coupled to an advection-type equation for the temperature of the physical system. This coupled system is derived from first principles in the sense that the starting point of our analysis is a system of Boltzmann equations for gaseous mixtures. We perform an asymptotic analysis on the Boltzmann model under diffuse scaling to arrive at the proposed coupled system.

Cloaking via mapping for the heat equation

This paper explores the concept of near-cloaking in the context of time-dependent heat propagation. We show that after the lapse of a certain threshold time instance, the boundary measurements for the homogeneous heat equation are close to the cloaked heat problem in a certain Sobolev space norm irrespective of the density-conductivity pair in the cloaked region. A regularised transformation media theory is employed to arrive at our results. Our proof relies on the study of the long time behaviour of solutions to the parabolic problems with high contrast in density and conductivity coefficients. It further relies on the study of boundary measurement estimates in the presence of small defects in the context of steady conduction problem. We then present some numerical examples to illustrate our theoretical results.

Heterogeneity and strong competition in ecology

We study a competition-diffusion model while performing simultaneous homogenization and strong competition limits. The limit problem is shown to be a Stefan type evolution equation with effective coefficients. We also perform some numerical simulations in one and two spatial dimensions that suggest that oscillations are detrimental to invasion behaviour of the species.
