Sfermion Mass Degeneracy, Superconformal Dynamics and Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

We discuss issues in a scenario that hierarchical Yukawa couplings are generated through strong dynamics of superconformal field theories (SCFTs). Independently of mediation mechanism of supersymmetry breaking, infrared convergence property of SCFTs can provide an interesting solution to supersymmetric flavor problem; sfermion masses are suppressed around the decoupling scale of SCFTs and eventually become degenerate to some degree, thanks to family-independent radiative corrections governed by the SM gaugino masses. We discuss under what conditions the degeneracy of sfermion mass can be estimated in a simple manner. We also discuss the constraints from lepton flavor violations. We then study explicitly sfermion mass degeneracy within the framework of grand unified theories coupled to SCFTs. It is found that the degeneracy for right-handed sleptons becomes worse in the conventional SU(5) model than in the MSSM. On the other hand, in the flipped SU(5) \times U(1) model, each right-handed lepton is still an SU(5)-singlet, whereas the bino mass M_1 is determined by two independent gaugino masses of SU(5) \times U(1). These two properties enable us to have an improved degeneracy for the right-handed sleptons. We also speculate how further improvement can be obtained in the SCFT approach.

Renormalization Group for Soft SUSY Breaking Parameters and MSSM Coupled with Superconformal Field Theories

First we give a review of the spurion formalism and the exact renormalization group equations for soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in general gauge theories. Next we discuss the minimal supersymmetric standard model coupled to superconformal theories leading to hierarchical Yukawa couplings by large anomalous dimensions of quarks and leptons. The soft scalar masses are found to satisfy the noble sum rule in IR regime. It is possible construct the models such that the degenerate squark/slepton masses are realized thanks to this IR sum rule. However, it is found also that this degeneracy is slightly broken mainly by the radiative corrections of the SM gaugino mass insertion. We show that the degeneracy is sufficient for the squark sector, but weak for the slepton sector to avoid the supersymmetric flavor problems.

More about Kaluza-Klein Regularization

We study the so-called ``Kaluza-Klein regularization''. We calculate one-loop corrections to the Higgs mass due to Kaluza-Klein modes explicitly in a model with SUSY breaking mass splitting between bosonic and fermionic modes. We perform the proper time cutoff at $1/Λ^2$ and the KK level truncation at $\ell$. It is shown that the finite result is obtained as long as $\ell \gg RΛ$ for the compactification radius $R$.

Yukawa Hierarchy Transfer from Superconformal Sector and Degenerate Sfermion Masses

We propose a new type of supersymmetric models coupled to superconformal field theories (SCFT's), leading simultaneously to hierarchical Yukawa couplings and completely degenerate sfermion masses. We consider models with an extra Abelian gauge symmetry to generate hierarchical structure for couplings between the SM sector and the SC sector. Interestingly, this hierarchy is inversely transferred to the Yukawa couplings in the SM sector. In this type of models, flavor-independent structure of the superconformal fixed point guarantees that the sfermion masses of the first and the second generations are completely degenerate at low energy.

Sfermion masses in Nelson-Strassler type of models: SUSY standard models coupled with SCFTs

We study soft SUSY breaking parameters in the Nelson-Strassler type of models: SUSY standard models coupled with SCFTs. In this type of models, soft SUSY breaking parameters including sfermion masses can be suppressed around the decoupling scale of SCFTs. We clarify the condition to derive exponential suppression of sfermion masses within the framework of pure SCFTs. Such behavior is favorable for degeneracy of sfermion masses. However, the realistic sfermion masses are not quite degenerate due to the gauge couplings and the gaugino masses in the SM sector. We show the sfermion mass spectrum obtained in such models. The aspect of suppression for the soft SUSY breaking parameters is also demonstrated in an explicit model. We also give a mechanism generating the $μ$-term of the Electro-Weak scale by a singlet field coupled with the SCFT.

ERG and Schwinger-Dyson Equations - Comparison in formulations and applications --

The advantageous points of ERG in applications to non-perturbative analyses of quantum field theories are discussed in comparison with the Schwinger-Dyson equations. First we consider the relation between these two formulations specially by examining the large N field theories. In the second part we study the phase structure of dynamical symmetry breaking in three dimensional QED as a typical example of the practical applications.

Running couplings in extra dimensions

The regularization scheme dependence of running couplings in extra compactified dimensions is discussed. We examine several regularization schemes explicitly in order to analyze the scheme dependence of the Kaluza-Klein threshold effects, which cause the power law running, in the case of the scalar theory in five dimensions with one dimension compactified. It is found that in 1-loop order, the net difference in the running of the coupling among the different schemes is reduced to be rather small after finite renormalization. An additional comment concerns the running couplings in the warped extra dimensions which are found to be regularization dependent above TeV scale.

Softly Broken Supersymmetric Gauge-Higgs-Yukawa Theories as Renormalizable Composite Models

We examine the (softly broken) supersymmetric gauge-Higgs-Yukawa theories satisfying the compositeness conditions at a certain scale. In these theories the Higgs superfields can be regarded as the chiral composite fields. It is found that there are the fundamental theories, which contain the dimension 5 interactions and the hard SUSY breaking in perturbation, turn to be renormalizable and also softly broken theories in the nonperturbative framework. The soft SUSY breaking parameters as well as the Yukawa coupling in the corresponding gauge-Higgs-Yukawa theories are restricted by the renormalization group invariant relations.

Scheme Dependence of the Wilsonian Effective Action and Sharp Cutoff Limit of the Flow Equation

The cutoff scheme dependence in the several formulations of the Exact Renormalization Group (ERG) is investigated. It is shown that the cutoff scheme dependence of the Wilsonian effective action is regarded as a certain coordinate transformation on the theory space. From this observation the Wilsonian effective actions are found to suffer from strong dependence on the schemes even in the infra-red asymptotic region for massive theories. However there is no such scheme dependence in the one particle irreducible parts of them, which is called the effective average actions. We also derive the explicit form of the Polchinski RG equation in the sharp cutoff limit. Finally this equation is shown to be identical with the Wegner-Houghton RG equation.

Non-ladder Extended Renormalization Group Analysis of the Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking

The order parameters of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, the dynamical mass of quarks and the chiral condensates, are evaluated by numerically solving the Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group (NPRG) equations. We employ an approximation scheme beyond ``the ladder'', that is, beyond the (improved) ladder Schwinger-Dyson equations. The chiral condensates are enhanced compared with the ladder ones, which is phenomenologically favorable. The gauge dependence of the order parameters is fairly reduced in this scheme.

Kaluza-Klein Thresholds and Regularization (In)dependence

We present a method to control the regularization scheme dependence in the running of couplings in Kaluza-Klein theories. Specifically we consider the scalar theory in five dimensions, assuming that one dimension is compactified and we study various regularization schemes in order to analyze concretely the regularization scheme dependence of the Kaluza-Klein threshold effects. We find that in one-loop order, although the $β$-functions are different for the different schemes, the net difference in the running of the coupling among the different schemes is very small for the entire range of energies. Our results have been extended to include more than one radii, and the gauge coupling unification is re-examined. Strings are also used as a regulator. We obtain a particular regularization of effective field theory which can accurately describe the string Kaluza-Klein threshold effects.

Nonperturbative Renormalization Group and Renormalizability of Gauged NJL Model

Non-perturbative renormalizability, or non-triviality, of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in four dimensions is examined by using non-perturbative (exact) renormalization group in large $N_c$ limit. When running of the gauge coupling is asymptotically free and slow enough, the two dimensional renormalized trajectory (subspace) spanned by the four fermi coupling and the gauge coupling is found to exist, which implies renormalizability of the gauged NJL model. In the case of fixed gauge coupling, renormalizability of the model turns out to be guaranteed by the line of the UV fixed points. We discuss also non-triviality of the gauged NJL model extended to include higher dimensional operators and correspondence with the gauge-Higgs-Yukawa system.

Analysis of the Wilsonian Effective Potentials in Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking

The non-perturbative renormalization group equation for the Wilsonian effective potential is given in a certain simple approximation scheme in order to study chiral symmetry breaking phenomena dynamically induced by strong gauge interactions. The evolving effective potential is found to be non-analytic in infrared, which indicates spontaneous generation of the fermion mass. It is also shown that the renormalization group equation gives the identical effective fermion mass with that obtained by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in the (improved) ladder approximation. Moreover introduction of the collective field corresponding to the fermion composite into the theory space is found to offer an efficient method to evaluate the order parameters; the dynamical mass and the chiral condensate. The relation between the renormalization group equation incorporating the collective field and the Schwinger-Dyson equation is also clarified.

Wilson Renormalization Group Equations for the Critical Dynamics of Chiral Symmetry

The critical dynamics of the chiral symmetry breaking induced by gauge interaction is examined in the Wilson renormalization group framework in comparison with the Schwinger-Dyson approach. We derive the beta functions for the four-fermi couplings in the sharp cutoff renormalzation group scheme, from which the critical couplings and the anomalous dimensions of the fermion composite operators near criticality are immediately obtained. It is also shown that the beta functions lead to the same critical behavior found by solving the so-called ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation, if we restrict the radiative corrections to a certain limited type.

Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group and Quantum Tunnelling

The non-perturbative renormalization group (NPRG) is applied to analysis of tunnelling in quantum mechanics. The vacuum energy and the energy gap of anharmonic oscillators are evaluated by solving the local potential approximated Wegner-Houghton equation (LPA W-H eqn.). We find that our results are very good in a strong coupling region, but not in a very weak coupling region, where the dilute gas instanton calculation works very well. So it seems that in analysis of quantum tunnelling, the dilute gas instanton and LPA W-H eqn. play complementary roles to each other. We also analyze the supersymmetric quantum mechanics and see if the dynamical supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking is described by NPRG method.

Rapidly Converging Truncation Scheme of the Exact Renormalization Group

The truncation scheme dependence of the exact renormalization group equations is investigated for scalar field theories in three dimensions. The exponents are numerically estimated to the next-to-leading order of the derivative expansion. It is found that the convergence property in various truncations in the number of powers of the fields is remarkably improved if the expansion is made around the minimum of the effective potential. It is also shown that this truncation scheme is suitable for evaluation of infrared effective potentials. The physical interpretation of this improvement is discussed by considering O(N) symmetric scalar theories in the large-N limit.

Quark Number Fractionalization in N=2 Supersymmetric $SU(2) \times U(1)^{N_f}$ Gauge Theories

Physical quark-number charges of dyons are determined, via a formula which generalizes that of Witten for the electric charge, in N=2 supersymmetric theories with $SU(2) \times U(1)^{N_f} $ gauge group. The quark numbers of the massless monopole at a nondegenerate singularity of QMS turn out to vanish in all cases. A puzzle related to CP invariant cases is solved. Generalization of our results to $SU(N_c)\times U(1)^{N_f}$ gauge theories is straightforward.

CP, Charge Fractionalizations and Low Energy Effective Actions in the SU(2) Seiberg-Witten Theories with Quarks

Several dynamical aspects of the SU(2) Seiberg-Witten models with N_f quark hypermultiplets are explored. We first clarify the meaning of the number of the singularities of the space of vacua. CP invariance of the theories are then studied and periodicities of theories in θwith and without bare quark masses are obtained ((4-N_f)πand π, respectively). CP noninvariance at a generic point of QMS manifests itself as the electric and quark-number charge fractionalizations for the dyons; we show that the exact Seiberg-Witten solution contains such effects correctly, in agreement with the semiclassical analysis recently made by F.Ferrari. Upon N=1 perturbation the low energy effective theories at the singularities display confinement, and in most cases chiral symmetry breaking as a consequence. In one of the vacua for N_f=3 confinement is not accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking: we interpret it as an example of oblique confinement of 't Hooft. We discuss further the consistency of the physical picture found here by studying the effects of soft supersymmetry breaking as well as the behavior of the theory in the N=1 limit.
