Conformal defects of general dimensions at finite temperature

We consider defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) at finite temperature, where a $p$-dimensional conformal defect wraps the thermal circle. Extending the previous study of line defects to defects of general dimensions, we determine the general forms of the thermal one-point functions of bulk scalars, conserved currents and the stress tensor by imposing the residual symmetry and the conservation laws. The low temperature expansion of the thermal one-point functions is shown to be reproduced by the bulk-defect operator expansion, allowing us to read off the thermal one-point coefficients of defect operators. We examine the general results in four classes of examples with free bulk theories: the trivial defect, free scalar and fermion theories with a boundary, the free scalar theory with a localized $ϕ$ deformation in $d=2\,p+2$ dimensions and the free $\mathrm{O}(N)$ model with a localized $ϕ^2$ deformation in $d=p+2-ε$ dimensions. In the last example with $ε= 1$, where the defect becomes an interface, we find that the thermal one-point functions coincide with those of the free scalar theory with the Dirichlet boundary condition, in accordance with the conjectured factorization of an interface CFT into two decoupled boundary CFTs.

Energy Conditions and Quantum Information

The concept of energy lies at the foundation of physical science. In general relativity and quantum field theory, the positivity and conservation of energy are encapsulated by the so-called energy-momentum tensor and the energy conditions. In recent efforts to unify fundamental physics with quantum information, the energy conditions have come to play a crucial role in establishing numerous theorems. In this article, we review the basics of energy conditions in general relativity and their applications in gravitational physics, quantum field theory, and the holographic principle. Through these applications, we explore the profound connection between the energy conditions and quantum information

Holographic defect CFTs with Dirichlet end-of-the-world branes

We construct a holographic model of defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) with defects of codimension greater than one. Our construction generalizes the AdS/BCFT model by anchoring the end-of-the-world brane on defects at the asymptotic AdS boundary and imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions for the metric on the brane. We compute the defect entropy and defect free energy and show that the defect $\mathcal{C}$-function is always non-negative. We further study holographic defect-localized RG flows triggered by a localized scalar field on the brane and show that the defect $\mathcal{C}$-theorem holds. We also verify that our model reproduces the expected forms of correlation functions in DCFTs.

A Practical Open-Source Software Stack for a Cloud-Based Quantum Computing System

Since the late 2010s, quantum computers have become commercially available, and the number of services that users can run remotely via cloud servers is increasing. In Japan, several domestic superconducting quantum computing systems, including our own, began operation in 2023. However, the design of quantum computing systems, especially in the most critical areas near quantum computers, remains largely undisclosed, creating a significant barrier to entry into the quantum computing field. If this situation continues, progress toward standardization, which is essential for guiding quantum computer development, will stall, and it will be difficult to develop a practical quantum computing system that can perform calculations on a supercomputer scale. To address this issue, we propose Open Quantum Toolchain for OPerators and USers (OQTOPUS), a full-stack quantum computing system developed from research with real quantum computers. OQTOPUS is one of the world's largest open-source software projects, covering operational software from cloud-based execution environment construction to system operation. Furthermore, to perform quantum computing effectively and efficiently, it implements key features, such as transpilers, multiprogramming, and error mitigation, in an area as close as possible to a quantum computer, an area that system vendors rarely disclose. Finally, this study presents experimental results of applying OQTOPUS to a real quantum computer. OQTOPUS is publicly available on GitHub and will notably lower the barrier to entry into the quantum computing field, contributing to the formation of a quantum computing developer community through open discussion.

Calculations of magnetic field produced by spin-vortex-induced loop currents in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ thin films using the particle-number conserving Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism

A theory for cuprate superconductivity predicts the existence of nano-sized loop currents called, `` spin-vortex-induced loop currents (SVILCs)''. We calculate magnetic fields produced by them for a model of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) thin films composed of one surface and two bulk CuO$_2$ bilayers. In this model, bulk CuO$_2$ layers host stable spin-vortices around small polarons formed from doped holes; they give rise to a $U(1)$ gauge field described by the Berry connection from many-body wave functions, and generates the SVILCs. The effect of the gauge field is taken into account by the particle-number conserving Bogoliubov-de Gennes (PNC-BdG) formalism. The magnitude of the calculated magnetic field produced by the SVILCs in the vicinity of the surface ($10a \approx 4$ nm, where $a$ is the lattice constant of the CuO$_2$ plane) is in the order of mT; thus, may be detectable by currently available detection methods. The detection of the SVILCs by the magnetic field measurement may bring about the elucidation of the cuprate superconductivity, and may also lead to their quantum device applications, including qubits.
