Coupled spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$ with partially disordered crystal lattice

We determined the crystal structure of Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$, which was synthesized first in this work, and investigated its magnetic properties. Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$ has a hexagonal structure composed of linear chains of face-sharing RuCl$_6$ and LiCl$_6$ octahedra. In two-thirds of the structural chains, Ru$^{3+}$ and Li$^+$ sites are almost ordered, while in the other chains their sites are disordered. This situation is analogous to the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. Using electron paramagnetic resonance, we evaluated the $g$ factors of Ru$^{3+}$ with effective spin-1/2 as $g_c\,{=}\,2.72$ and $g_{ab}\,{=}\,1.50$ for magnetic fields $H$ parallel and perpendicular to the $c$ axis, respectively. Magnetization curves for $H\,{\parallel}\,c$ and $H\,{\perp}\,c$ are highly anisotropic. However, these magnetization curves approximately coincide when normalized by the $g$ factors. It was found from the magnetization and specific heat results that Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$ can be described as a coupled one-dimensional $S\,{=}\,1/2$ Heisenberg-like antiferromagnet with $J/k_{\rm B}\,{\simeq}\,3.7$ K. Three-dimensional ordering occurs at $T_{\rm N}\,{=}\,0.48$ K. A magnetic phase diagram for $H\,{\parallel}\,c$ is also presented.

Type Ia SN 2019ein: New Insights into the Similarities and diversities among High-Velocity SNe Ia

We present optical observations of type Ia supernova (SN) 2019ein, starting at 2 days after the estimated explosion date. The spectra and the light curves show that SN 2019ein belongs to the High-Velocity (HV) and Bload Line groups with relatively rapid decline in the light curves (Delta m15(B) = 1.36 +- 0.02 mag) and the short rise time (15.37 +- 0.55 days). The Si II 6355 velocity, associated with a photospheric component but not with a detached high-velocity feature, reached ~ 20,000 km s-1 at 12 days before the B-band maximum. The line velocity however decreased very rapidly and smoothly toward the maximum light, where it was ~ 13,000 km s-1 as relatively low among HV SNe. This indicates that the speed of the spectral evolution of HV SNe Ia is correlated not only to the velocity at the maximum light, but also to the light curve decline rate like the case for Normal-Velocity (NV) SNe Ia. Spectral synthesis modeling shows that the outermost layer at > 17,000 km s-1 is well described by the O-Ne-C burning layer extending to at least 25,000 km s-1, and there is no unburnt carbon below 30,000 km s-1; these properties are largely consistent with the delayed detonation scenario, and are shared with the prototypical HV SN 2002bo despite the large difference in Delta m15(B). This structure is strikingly different from that derived for the well-studied NV SN 2011fe. We suggest that the relation between the mass of 56Ni (or Delta m15) and the extent of the O-Ne-C burning layer provides an important constraint on the explosion mechanism(s) of HV and NV SNe.

Triplon band splitting and topologically protected edge states in the dimerized antiferromagnet

The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, through inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands and a clear band gap between them due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interactions along the $a$-direction, which is consistent with the crystal structure. The presence of topologically protected edge states is indicated by a bipartite nature of the lattice.
