Simulation of the Burridge-Knopoff Model of Earthquakes with Variable Range Stress Transfer

Simple models of earthquake faults are important for understanding the mechanisms for their observed behavior, such as Gutenberg-Richter scaling and the relation between large and small events, which is the basis for various forecasting methods. Although cellular automaton models have been studied extensively in the long-range stress transfer limit, this limit has not been studied for the Burridge-Knopoff model, which includes more realistic friction forces and inertia. We find that the latter model with long-range stress transfer exhibits qualitatively different behavior than both the long-range cellular automaton models and the usual Burridge-Knopoff model with nearest neighbor springs, depending on the nature of the velocity-weakening friction force. This result has important implications for our understanding of earthquakes and other driven dissipative systems.

Overcoming the critical slowing down of flat-histogram Monte Carlo simulations: Cluster updates and optimized broad-histogram ensembles

We study the performance of Monte Carlo simulations that sample a broad histogram in energy by determining the mean first-passage time to span the entire energy space of d-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising/Potts models. We first show that flat-histogram Monte Carlo methods with single-spin flip updates such as the Wang-Landau algorithm or the multicanonical method perform sub-optimally in comparison to an unbiased Markovian random walk in energy space. For the d=1,2,3 Ising model, the mean first-passage time τscales with the number of spins N=L^d as τ\propto N^2L^z. The critical exponent z is found to decrease as the dimensionality d is increased. In the mean-field limit of infinite dimensions we find that z vanishes up to logarithmic corrections. We then demonstrate how the slowdown characterized by z>0 for finite d can be overcome by two complementary approaches - cluster dynamics in connection with Wang-Landau sampling and the recently developed ensemble optimization technique. Both approaches are found to improve the random walk in energy space so that τ\propto N^2 up to logarithmic corrections for the d=1 and d=2 Ising model.

Heterogeneity in Classical and Non-Classical Nucleation

We investigate heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation in nearest-neighbor and long-range Ising models for various quench depths. We find that the system has a true crossover from heterogeneous to homogeneous nucleation for increasing quench depth only if the interaction is sufficiently long-range. The survival curves, defined as the fraction of systems that remain in the metastable state after a given time, have qualitatively different shapes as a function of quench depth for heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation when the interaction is short-range, but have identical shapes within the accuracy of our data for long-range interactions.

Zeros of the Partition Function and Pseudospinodals in Long-Range Ising Models

The relation between the zeros of the partition function and spinodal critical points in Ising models with long-range interactions is investigated. We find the spinodal is associated with the zeros of the partition function in four-dimensional complex temperature/magnetic field space. The zeros approach the real temperature/magnetic field plane as the range of interaction increases.

High precision measurement of the static dipole polarizability of cesium

The cesium 6S_1/2 scalar dipole polarizability alpha_0 has been determined from the time-of-flight of laser cooled and launched cesium atoms traveling through an electric field. We find alpha_0 = 6.611+-0.009 x 10^-39 C m^2/V= 59.42+-0.08 x 10^-24 cm^3 = 401.0+-0.6 a_0^3. The 0.14% uncertainty is a factor of fourteen improvement over the previous measurement. Values for the 6P_1/2 and 6P_3/2 lifetimes and the 6S_1/2 cesium-cesium dispersion coefficient C_6 are determined from alpha_0 using the procedure of Derevianko and Porsev [Phys. Rev. A 65, 053403 (2002)].

Improved alternating gradient transport and focusing of neutral molecules

Polar molecules, in strong-field seeking states, can be transported and focused by an alternating sequence of electric field gradients that focus in one transverse direction while defocusing in the other. We show, by calculation and numerical simulation, how one may greatly improve the alternating gradient transport and focusing of molecules. We use a new optimized multipole lens design, a FODO-lattice beam transport line, and lenses to match the beam transport line to the beam source and to the final focus. We derive analytic expressions for the potentials, fields, and gradients that may be used to design these lenses. We describe a simple lens optimization procedure and derive the equations of motion for tracking molecules through a beam transport line. As an example, we model a straight beamline that transports a 560 m/s jet-source beam of methyl fluoride15 m from its source and focuses it to 2 mm diameter. We calculate the beam transport line acceptance and beam survival, for a beam with a velocity spread, and estimate the transmitted intensity for specified source conditions. Possible applications are discussed.

Clusters and Fluctuations at Mean-Field Critical Points and Spinodals

We show that the structure of the fluctuations close to spinodals and mean-field critical points is qualitatively different than the structure close to non-mean-field critical points. This difference has important implications for many areas including the formation of glasses in supercooled liquids. In particular, the divergence of the measured static structure function in near-mean-field systems close to the glass transition is suppressed relative to the mean-field prediction in systems for which a spatial symmetry is broken.

Cluster Monte Carlo study of multi-component fluids of the Stillinger-Helfand and Widom-Rowlinson type

Phase transitions of fluid mixtures of the type introduced by Stillinger and Helfand are studied using a continuum version of the invaded cluster algorithm. Particles of the same species do not interact, but particles of different types interact with each other via a repulsive potential. Examples of interactions include the Gaussian molecule potential and a repulsive step potential. Accurate values of the critical density, fugacity and magnetic exponent are found in two and three dimensions for the two-species model. The effect of varying the number of species and of introducing quenched impurities is also investigated. In all the cases studied, mixtures of $q$-species are found to have properties similar to $q$-state Potts models.

Slowing and cooling molecules and neutral atoms by time-varying electric field gradients

A method of slowing, accelerating, cooling, and bunching molecules and neutral atoms using time-varying electric field gradients is demonstrated with cesium atoms in a fountain. The effects are measured and found to be in agreement with calculation. Time-varying electric field gradient slowing and cooling is applicable to atoms that have large dipole polarizabilities, including atoms that are not amenable to laser slowing and cooling, to Rydberg atoms, and to molecules, especially polar molecules with large electric dipole moments. The possible applications of this method include slowing and cooling thermal beams of atoms and molecules, launching cold atoms from a trap into a fountain, and measuring atomic dipole polarizabilities.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Long-Lived Structures in a Fragile Glass Forming Liquid

We present molecular dynamics results for a two component, two-dimensional Lennard-Jones supercooled liquid near the glass transition. We find that the supercooled liquid is spatially heterogeneous and that there are long-lived clusters whose size distribution satisfies a scaling relation up to a cutoff. The similarity of several properties of the supercooled liquid to those of a mean-field glass-forming fluid near the spinodal suggests that the glass transition in the supercooled liquid is associated with an underlying thermodynamic instability.

Monte Carlo study of the Widom-Rowlinson fluid using cluster methods

The Widom-Rowlinson model of a fluid mixture is studied using a new cluster algorithm that is a generalization of the invaded cluster algorithm previously applied to Potts models. Our estimate of the critical exponents for the two-component fluid are consistent with the Ising universality class in two and three dimensions. We also present results for the three-component fluid.
