Dual Quaternion-Based Unscented Kalman Filter with Visual Inertial Odometry for Navigation in GPS-Denied Environments

Reliable navigation in GPS-denied environments remains a fundamental challenge in robotics, aerospace, and autonomous vehicle applications. This paper presents a Dual Quaternion-Based Unscented Kalman Filter (DQUKF) equipped with a Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) algorithm for accurate state estimation enabling navigation in GPS denied locations. The proposed framework formulates the DQUKF in an error state manner, where the nominal pose is represented by a unit dual quaternion and the local pose error is represented by a 6-dimensional twistor parameterization used for sigma point generation, covariance propagation, and measurement correction. In parallel, the VIO algorithm tracks features across image frames, synchronizes measurements between the IMU and camera, and provides visual constraints that complement inertial propagation. Simulation results on the EuRoC MAV dataset show that the proposed DQUKF converges under high initialization uncertainty and achieves a position RMSE of 0.2584~m in the difficult flight sequence, outperforming the benchmark filters.

Quaternion-based Unscented Kalman Filter for Robust Wrench Estimation of Human-UAV Physical Interaction

This paper introduces an advanced Quaternion-based Unscented Kalman Filter (QUKF) for real-time, robust estimation of system states and external wrenches in assistive aerial payload transportation systems that engage in direct physical interaction. Unlike conventional filtering techniques, the proposed approach employs a unit-quaternion representation to inherently avoid singularities and ensure globally consistent, drift-free estimation of the platform's pose and interaction wrenches. A rigorous quaternion-based dynamic model is formulated to capture coupled translational and rotational dynamics under interaction forces. Building on this model, a comprehensive QUKF framework is established for state prediction, measurement updates, and external wrench estimation. The proposed formulation fully preserves the nonlinear characteristics of rotational motion, enabling more accurate and numerically stable estimation during physical interaction compared to linearized filtering schemes. Extensive simulations validate the effectiveness of the QUKF, showing significant improvements over the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Specifically, the QUKF achieved a 79.41\% reduction in Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) for torque estimation, with average RMSE improvements of 79\% and 56\%, for position and angular rates, respectively. These findings demonstrate enhanced robustness to measurement noise and modeling uncertainties, providing a reliable foundation for safe, stable, and responsive human-UAV physical interaction in cooperative payload transportation tasks.

Adaptive Gain Nonlinear Observer for External Wrench Estimation in Human-UAV Physical Interaction

This paper presents an Adaptive Gain Nonlinear Observer (AGNO) for estimating the external interaction wrench (forces and torques) in human-UAV physical interaction for assistive payload transportation. The proposed AGNO uses the full nonlinear dynamic model to achieve an accurate and robust wrench estimation without relying on dedicated force-torque sensors. A key feature of this approach is the explicit consideration of the non-constant inertia matrix, which is essential for aerial systems with asymmetric mass distribution or shifting payloads. A comprehensive dynamic model of a cooperative transportation system composed of two quadrotors and a shared payload is derived, and the stability of the observer is rigorously established using Lyapunov-based analysis. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed observer in enabling intuitive and safe human-UAV interaction. Comparative evaluations demonstrate that the proposed AGNO outperforms an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in terms of estimation root mean square errors (RMSE), particularly for torque estimation under nonlinear interaction conditions. This approach reduces system weight and cost by eliminating additional sensing hardware, enhancing practical feasibility.

A Unified Finite-Time Sliding Mode Quaternion-based Tracking Control for Quadrotor UAVs without Time Scale Separation

This paper presents a novel design for finite-time position control of quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A robust, finite-time, nonlinear feedback controller is introduced to reject bounded disturbances in tracking tasks. The proposed control framework differs conceptually from conventional controllers that utilize Euler angle parameterization for attitude and adhere to the traditional hierarchical inner-outer loop design. In standard approaches, the translational controller and the corresponding desired attitude are computed first, followed by the design of the attitude controller based on time-scale separation between fast attitude and slow translational dynamics. In contrast, the proposed control scheme is quaternion-based and utilizes a transit feed-forward term in the attitude dynamics that anticipates the slower translational subsystem. Robustness is achieved through the use of continuously differentiable sliding manifolds. The proposed approach guarantees semi-global finite-time stability, without requiring time-scale separation. Finally, numerical simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Novel Multi-Agent Action Masked Deep Reinforcement Learning for General Industrial Assembly Lines Balancing Problems

Efficient planning of activities is essential for modern industrial assembly lines to uphold manufacturing standards, prevent project constraint violations, and achieve cost-effective operations. While exact solutions to such challenges can be obtained through Integer Programming (IP), the dependence of the search space on input parameters often makes IP computationally infeasible for large-scale scenarios. Heuristic methods, such as Genetic Algorithms, can also be applied, but they frequently produce suboptimal solutions in extensive cases. This paper introduces a novel mathematical model of a generic industrial assembly line formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), without imposing assumptions on the type of assembly line a notable distinction from most existing models. The proposed model is employed to create a virtual environment for training Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agents to optimize task and resource scheduling. To enhance the efficiency of agent training, the paper proposes two innovative tools. The first is an action-masking technique, which ensures the agent selects only feasible actions, thereby reducing training time. The second is a multi-agent approach, where each workstation is managed by an individual agent, as a result, the state and action spaces were reduced. A centralized training framework with decentralized execution is adopted, offering a scalable learning architecture for optimizing industrial assembly lines. This framework allows the agents to learn offline and subsequently provide real-time solutions during operations by leveraging a neural network that maps the current factory state to the optimal action. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated through numerical simulations, demonstrating significantly faster convergence to the optimal solution compared to a comparable model-based approach.

Novel Hybrid Integrated Pix2Pix and WGAN Model with Gradient Penalty for Binary Images Denoising

This paper introduces a novel approach to image denoising that leverages the advantages of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Specifically, we propose a model that combines elements of the Pix2Pix model and the Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) with Gradient Penalty (WGAN-GP). This hybrid framework seeks to capitalize on the denoising capabilities of conditional GANs, as demonstrated in the Pix2Pix model, while mitigating the need for an exhaustive search for optimal hyperparameters that could potentially ruin the stability of the learning process. In the proposed method, the GAN's generator is employed to produce denoised images, harnessing the power of a conditional GAN for noise reduction. Simultaneously, the implementation of the Lipschitz continuity constraint during updates, as featured in WGAN-GP, aids in reducing susceptibility to mode collapse. This innovative design allows the proposed model to benefit from the strong points of both Pix2Pix and WGAN-GP, generating superior denoising results while ensuring training stability. Drawing on previous work on image-to-image translation and GAN stabilization techniques, the proposed research highlights the potential of GANs as a general-purpose solution for denoising. The paper details the development and testing of this model, showcasing its effectiveness through numerical experiments. The dataset was created by adding synthetic noise to clean images. Numerical results based on real-world dataset validation underscore the efficacy of this approach in image-denoising tasks, exhibiting significant enhancements over traditional techniques. Notably, the proposed model demonstrates strong generalization capabilities, performing effectively even when trained with synthetic noise.

Adaptive Backstepping and Non-singular Sliding Mode Control for Quadrotor UAVs with Unknown Time-varying Uncertainties

This paper presents a novel quaternion-based nonsingular control system for underactuated vertical-take-off and landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Position and attitude tracking is challenging regarding singularity and accuracy. Quaternion-based Adaptive Backstepping Control (QABC) is developed to tackle the underactuated issues of UAV control systems in a cascaded way. Leveraging the virtual control (auxiliary control) developed in the QABC, desired attitude components and required thrust are produced. Afterwards, we propose Quaternion-based Sliding Mode Control (QASMC) to enhance the stability and mitigate chattering issues. The sliding surface is modified to avoid singularity compared to conventional SMC. To improve the robustness of controllers, the control parameters are updated using adaptation laws. Furthermore, the asymptotic stability of translational and rotational dynamics is guaranteed by utilizing Lyapunov stability and Barbalet Lemma. Finally, the comprehensive comparison results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controllers in the presence of unknown time-varying parameter uncertainties and significant initial errors. Quaternion-based Adaptive Backstepping Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control for Quadrotor UAVs with Finite Time Convergence

This paper proposes a novel quaternion-based approach for tracking the translation (position and linear velocity) and rotation (attitude and angular velocity) trajectories of underactuated Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Quadrotor UAVs are challenging regarding accuracy, singularity, and uncertainties issues. Controllers designed based on unit-quaternion are singularity-free for attitude representation compared to other methods (e.g., Euler angles), which fail to represent the vehicle's attitude at multiple orientations. Quaternion-based Adaptive Backstepping Control (ABC) and Adaptive Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control (AFTSMC) are proposed to address a set of challenging problems. A quaternion-based ABC, a superior recursive approach, is proposed to generate the necessary thrust handling unknown uncertainties and UAV translation trajectory tracking. Next, a quaternion-based AFTSMC is developed to overcome parametric uncertainties, avoid singularity, and ensure fast convergence in a finite time. Moreover, the proposed AFTSMC is able to significantly minimize control signal chattering, which is the main reason for actuator failure and provide smooth and accurate rotational control input. To ensure the robustness of the proposed approach, the designed control algorithms have been validated considering unknown time-variant parametric uncertainties and significant initialization errors. The proposed techniques has been compared to state-of-the-art control technique. Deep Reinforcement Learning for Sim-to-Real Policy Transfer of VTOL-UAVs Offshore Docking Operations

This paper proposes a novel Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach for sim-to-real policy transfer of Vertical Take-Off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (VTOL-UAV). The proposed approach is designed for VTOL-UAV landing on offshore docking stations in maritime operations. VTOL-UAVs in maritime operations encounter limitations in their operational range, primarily stemming from constraints imposed by their battery capacity. The concept of autonomous landing on a charging platform presents an intriguing prospect for mitigating these limitations by facilitating battery charging and data transfer. However, current Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) methods exhibit drawbacks, including lengthy training times, and modest success rates. In this paper, we tackle these concerns comprehensively by decomposing the landing procedure into a sequence of more manageable but analogous tasks in terms of an approach phase and a landing phase. The proposed architecture utilizes a model-based control scheme for the approach phase, where the VTOL-UAV is approaching the offshore docking station. In the Landing phase, DRL agents were trained offline to learn the optimal policy to dock on the offshore station. The Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) spectrum model has been employed to create a wave model for each episode, enhancing policy generalization for sim2real transfer. A set of DRL algorithms have been tested through numerical simulations including value-based agents and policy-based agents such as Deep \textit{Q} Networks (DQN) and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) respectively. The numerical experiments show that the PPO agent can learn complicated and efficient policies to land in uncertain environments, which in turn enhances the likelihood of successful sim-to-real transfer.

MPC Based Linear Equivalence with Control Barrier Functions for VTOL-UAVs

In this work, we propose a cascaded scheme of linear Model prediction Control (MPC) based on Control Barrier Functions (CBF) with Dynamic Feedback Linearization (DFL) for Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). CBF is a tool that allows enforcement of forward invariance of a set using Lyapunov-like functions to ensure safety. The First control synthesis that employed CBF was based on Quadratic Program (QP) that modifies the existing controller to satisfy the safety requirements. However, the CBF-QP-based controllers leading to longer detours and undesirable transient performance. Recent contributions utilize the framework of MPC benefiting from the prediction capabilities and constraints imposed on the state and control inputs. Due to the intrinsic nonlinearities of the dynamics of robotics systems, all the existing MPC-CBF solutions rely on nonlinear MPC formulations or operate on less accurate linear models. In contrast, our novel solution unlocks the benefits of linear MPC-CBF while considering the full underactuated dynamics without any linear approximations. The cascaded scheme converts the problem of safe VTOL-UAV navigation to a Quadratic Constraint Quadratic Programming (QCQP) problem solved efficiently by off-the-shelf solvers. The closed-loop stability and recursive feasibility is proved along with numerical simulations showing the effective and robust solutions.
