Boundaries of the compact free boson through edge modes and boundary SymTFT

We study boundary conditions of the compact free boson theory by coupling the bulk scalar to one-dimensional topological edge modes. We show that a single compact edge mode realizes the Dirichlet family, while a two field system realizes the Neumann family; more general compact edge theories can describe superpositions of boundary conditions and reproduce the expected boundary operator spectra. We then study this system in the framework of boundary SymTFT. We show that the edge mode theories of Dirichlet and Neumann boundaries are encoded in the degrees of freedom localized on the corners and the choice of polarization on the topological face of the boundary SymTFT. We further show that the T-duality defect exchanges the data associated with the Dirichlet and Neumann configurations. Finally, we explore extensions involving non-compact edge modes and multiple bulk fields, obtaining continuous boundary spectra in the first case and mixed boundary conditions in the second.

Non-supersymmetric heterotic strings on $AdS_{4}\times S^{3}\times S^{3}$

We analyze the stability properties of a family of anti-de Sitter flux compactifications of the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic string in ten dimensions. In contrast with simpler such solutions, the solutions include two independent unbounded fluxes, leading to richer instability phenomena. In particular, when the two fluxes are sufficiently close in magnitude, the perturbative spectrum develops tachyonic modes, which can be projected out by an orbifold action. When the fluxes are far apart, tachyonic modes are absent, and the geometry displays inverse scale separation, where a factor of the internal manifold becomes parametrically larger than the anti-de Sitter factor. Still, non-perturbative instabilities in the form of brane nucleation are always available decay channels, and tend to drive the two fluxes closer together, eventually triggering the tachyonic instability when present.

Constraining boundary conditions in non-rational CFTs

We revisit the question of conformal boundary conditions in the compact free boson CFT in two dimensions. Besides the well-known Neumann and Dirichlet cases, there is an additional proposed one-parameter family of boundary states when the radius is an irrational multiple of the self-dual radius. These additional states have a continuous open string spectrum, and we give an explicit formula for the density of states. We also discuss several pathologies of these states, including the possible violation of the cluster condition, and that they have a divergent g-function.

O(16)$\times$O(16) heterotic theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$

In this paper, we study non-supersymmetric $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}$ vacuua of $O(16)\times O(16)$ heterotic theory on a string scale $T^{4}$ background, which are parameterized by a pair of flux integers. Adding the one-loop scalar potential to the effective theory contributes positively to the cosmological constant, but we find that there is no uplift to de Sitter for any values of the fluxes. We study the fluctuations around these vacua and show that all scalar and tensor modes from the six-dimensional effective theory lie above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. The moduli coming from the torus compactification will also be above the bound, at least for a large range of fluxes.

Entropic Dynamics approach to Relational Quantum Mechanics

The general framework of Entropic Dynamics (ED) is used to construct non-relativistic models of relational quantum mechanics from well known inference principles -- probability, entropy and information geometry. Although only partially relational -- the absolute structures of simultaneity and Euclidean geometry are still retained -- these models provide a useful testing ground for ideas that will prove useful in the context of more realistic relativistic theories. The fact that in ED the positions of particles have definite values, just as in classical mechanics, has allowed us to adapt to the quantum case some intuitions from Barbour and Bertotti's classical framework. Here, however, we propose a new measure of the mismatch between successive states that is adapted to the information metric and the symplectic structures of the quantum phase space. We make explicit that ED is temporally relational and we construct non-relativistic quantum models that are spatially relational with respect to rigid translations and rotations. The ED approach settles the longstanding question of what form should the constraints of a classical theory take after quantization: the quantum constraints that express relationality are to be imposed on expectation values. To highlight the potential impact of these developments, the non-relativistic quantum model is parametrized into a generally covariant form and we show that the ED approach evades the analogue of what in quantum gravity has been called the problem of time.
