One-loop Corrections in Power Spectrum in Single Field Inflation

We revisit the one-loop correction in curvature perturbation power spectrum in models of single field inflation which undergo a phase of ultra slow-roll (USR) inflation. We include the contributions from both the cubic and quartic interaction Hamiltonians and calculate the one-loop corrections on the spectrum of the CMB scale modes from the small scale modes which leave the horizon during the USR phase. It is shown that the amplitude of one-loop corrections depends on the sharpness of the transition from the USR phase to the final slow-roll phase. For an arbitrarily sharp transition, the one-loop correction becomes arbitrarily large, invalidating the perturbative treatment of the analysis. We speculate that for a mild transition, the large one-loop corrections are washed out during the subsequent evolution after the USR phase. The implications for primordial black holes formation are briefly reviewed.

The Sign of non-Gaussianity and the Primordial Black Holes Abundance

The abundance of primordial black holes changes in the presence of local non-Gaussianity. A positive non-linear parameter $f_{NL}$ increases the abundance while a negative one reduces it. We show that in non-attractor single-field models of inflation which enhance the curvature power spectrum and may give rise to primordial black holes, $f_{NL}$ is always positive, when computed in correspondence of the peak of the curvature power spectrum where the primordial black hole abundance has its maximum. This implies that the interpretation of the recent pulsar timing arrays data from scalar-induced gravitational waves generated at primordial black hole formation may not be supported by invoking non-Gaussianity within non-attractor single-field models.

Vacuum Zero Point Energy and its Statistical Correlations in dS Background

We study the vacuum zero point energy associated to a scalar field with an arbitrary mass and conformal coupling in a dS background. Employing dimensional regularization scheme, we calculate the regularized zero point energy density, pressure and the trace of the energy momentum tensor. It is shown that the classical relation $\langle T \rangle =-4 \langle ρ\rangle$ for the vacuum stress energy tensor receives anomalous quantum correction which depends on the mass and the conformal coupling while the relation $\langle ρ\rangle = - \langle P \rangle$ does hold. We calculate the density contrast associated to the vacuum zero point energy and show that $δρ\sim \langle ρ\rangle$ indicating an inhomogeneous and non-perturbative distribution of the zero point energy. Finally, we calculate the skewness associated to the distribution of the zero point energy and pressure and show that they are highly non-Gaussian.

Inflation from Multiple Pseudo-Scalar Fields: PBH Dark Matter and Gravitational Waves

We study a model of inflation with multiple pseudo-scalar fields coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field through Chern-Simons interactions. Because of parity violating interactions, one polarization of the gauge field is amplified yielding to enhanced curvature perturbation power spectrum. Inflation proceeds in multiple stages as each pseudo-scalar field rolls towards its minimum yielding to distinct multiple peaks in the curvature perturbations power spectrum at various scales during inflation. The localized peaks in power spectrum generate Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) which can furnish a large fraction of Dark Matter (DM) abundance. In addition, gravitational waves (GWs) with non-trivial spectra are generated which are in sensitivity range of various forthcoming GW observatories.

Primordial Black Holes and Loops in Single-Field Inflation

Using the $δN$ formalism we calculate the one-loop correction to the large-scale power spectrum of the curvature perturbation in the standard scenario where primordial black holes are formed in the early universe thanks to a phase of ultra-slow-roll in single-field inflation. We explicitly show that one-loop corrections are negligible when the transition from the ultra-slow-roll to the slow-roll phase is smooth. We conclude that the PBH formation scenario through a ultra-slow-roll phase is viable.

Stochastic Multiple Fields Inflation: Diffusion Dominated Regime

We study multiple fields inflation in diffusion dominated regime using stochastic $δN$ formalism. The fields are under pure Brownian motion in a dS background with boundaries in higher dimensional field space. This setup can be realized towards the final stages of the ultra slow-roll setup where the classical drifts fall off exponentially and the perturbations are driven by quantum kicks. We consider both symmetric and asymmetric boundaries with absorbing and reflective boundary conditions and calculate the average number of e-folds, the first crossing probabilities and the power spectrum. We study the primordial black holes (PBHs) formation in this setup and calculate the mass fraction and the contribution of PBHs in dark matter energy density for various higher dimensional field spaces.

Cosmological Constant and Vacuum Zero Point Energy in Black Hole Backgrounds

We study the quantum vacuum zero point energy in the Schwarzschild black hole as well as in the Nariai limit of the dS-Schwarzschild backgrounds. We show that the regularized vacuum energy density near the black hole and also in the Nariai setup match exactly with the corresponding value in the flat background, scaling with the fourth power of the mass of the quantum field. The horizon radius of the dS space created from the vacuum zero point energy introduces a new length scale which should be compared with the black hole horizon radius. There is an upper limiting mass for the black hole immersed in the vacuum zero point energy which is determined by the mass of the Nariai metric associated to the dS background constructed from zero point energy. We calculate the variance in the distribution of the vacuum zero point energy and the density contrast and show that it develops strong inhomogeneities on sub-horizon scales.

White Hole Cosmology and Hawking Radiation from Quantum Cosmological Perturbations

The spacetime inside the white hole is like an anisotropic cosmological background with the past singularity playing the role of a big bang singularity. The scale factor along the extended spatial direction is contracting while the scale factor along the two-sphere is expanding. We consider an eternal Schwarzschild manifold and study quantum cosmological perturbations generated near the white hole singularity which propagate towards the past event horizon and to exterior of the black hole. It is shown that an observer deep inside the white hole and an observer far outside the black hole both share the same vacuum. We calculate the Hawking radiation associated to these quantum white hole perturbations as measured by an observer in the exterior of the black hole. Furthermore, we also consider the Hawking radiation for the general case where the initial cosmological perturbations deep inside the white hole are in "non-vacuum" state yielding to a deviation from Planck distribution. This analysis suggests that if the black hole is not entirely black (due to Hawking radiation) then the white hole is not entirely white either.

Cosmological constant problem on the horizon

We revisit the quantum cosmological constant problem and highlight the important roles played by the dS horizon of zero point energy. We argue that fields which are light enough to have dS horizon of zero point energy comparable to the FLRW Hubble radius are the main contributors to dark energy. On the other hand, the zero point energy of heavy fields develop nonlinearities on sub-Hubble scales and can not contribute to dark energy. We speculate that our proposal may provide a resolution for both the old and new cosmological constant problems by noting that there exists a field, the (lightest) neutrino, which happens to have a mass comparable to the present background photon temperature. The proposal predicts multiple transient periods of dark energy in early and late expansion history of the universe yielding to a higher value of the current Hubble expansion rate which can resolve the $H_0$ tension problem.

Multiple Field Ultra Slow Roll Inflation: Primordial Black Holes From Straight Bulk And Distorted Boundary

We study a model of two-field ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation bounded by a curve in the field space. Curvature perturbations and non-Gaussianities can be enhanced both during the USR phase and from the inhomogeneities at the boundary. We employ the full non-linear $δN$ formalism to calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) for curvature perturbation non-perturbatively and show that the non-linear effects can significantly enhance the abundance of the primordial black holes (PBHs). For large curvature perturbations, the PDF has a universal exponential tail, but for the intermediate values, the PDF -- and, therefore, the abundance of the PBHs -- depend sensitively on the geometry of the boundary.

Inflation with Stochastic Boundary

We study the Brownian motion of a field where there are boundaries in the inflationary field space. Both the field and the boundary undergo Brownian motions with the amplitudes of the noises determined by the Hubble expansion rate of the corresponding dS spacetime. This setup mimics models of inflation in which curvature perturbation is induced from inhomogeneities generated at the surface of end of inflation. The cases of the drift dominated regime as well as the diffusion dominated regime are studied in details. We calculate the first hitting probabilities as well as the mean number of e-folds for the field to hit either of the boundaries in the field space. The implications for models of inflation are reviewed.

Multiple transitions in vacuum dark energy and $H_0$ tension

We study the effects of multiple transitions in the vacuum dark energy density on the $H_0$ tension problem. We consider a phenomenological model in which the vacuum energy density undergoes multiple transitions in the early as well as the late universe and compare the model's predictions using the three sets of data from CMB+BAO+SN. The transient dark energy can be either positive (dS-like) or negative (AdS-like). We conclude that a transient late-time AdS-type vacuum energy typically yields the higher value of $H_0$ which can alleviate the $H_0$ tension. In addition, to obtain a value of $H_0$ comparable to the value obtained from the local cosmological measurements the spectral index $n_s$ moves towards its Harrison-Zel'dovich scale invariant value

Dark Matter from Entropy Perturbations in Curved Field Space

The accumulated energy density of the excited entropy modes in multiple field inflationary scenarios can play the role of dark matter. In the usual case of a flat field space without any turning trajectory, only light superhorizon entropy modes can be excited through the gravitational instability. In the case of a negatively curved field space, we show that subhorizon entropy modes can be excited as well through the tachyonic instability induced by the negative curvature of the field space. The latter allows for production of entropy modes with masses larger than or at the order of the Hubble expansion rate during inflation, leading to a new dark matter scenario. Due to the contribution of subhorizon modes, the corresponding spectral density has a peak at a scale smaller than its counterpart in the models based on a flat field space. This difference makes our model observationally distinguishable.

Stochastic Effects in Axion Inflation and Primordial Black Holes Formation

We revisit the model of axion inflation in the context of stochastic inflation and investigate the effects of the stochastic noises associated to the electromagnetic fields. Because of the parity violating interaction, one polarization of the gauge field is amplified inducing large curvature perturbation power spectrum. Taking into account the stochastic kicks arising from the short modes at the time of horizon crossing we obtain the corresponding Langevin equations for the long modes of the electromagnetic and axion fields. It is shown that a mean-reverting process governs the dynamics of the electromagnetic fields such that the tachyonic growth of the gauge fields is balanced by the diffusion forces. As the instability parameter grows towards the end of inflation, the large curvature perturbations induced from gauge field perturbations lead to copious production of small mass primordial black holes (PBHs). It is shown that the produced PBHs follow a Gaussian statistics. Imposing the observational constraints on PBHs formation relaxes the previous bounds on the instability parameter by about fifty percents.

Multi-field Mimetic Gravity

In this paper, we extend the mimetic gravity to the multi-field setup with a curved field space manifold. The multi-field mimetic scenario is realized via the singular limit of the conformal transformation between the auxiliary and the physical metrics. We look for the cosmological implications of the setup where it is shown that at the background level the mimetic energy density mimics the roles of dark matter. At the perturbation level, the scalar field perturbations are decomposed into the tangential and normal components with respect to the background field space trajectory. The adiabatic perturbation tangential to the background trajectory is frozen while the entropy mode perpendicular to the background trajectory propagates with the speed of unity. Whether or not the entropy perturbation is healthy directly depends on the signature of the field-space metric. We perform the full non-linear Hamiltonian analysis of the system with the curved field space manifold and calculate the physical degrees of freedom verifying that the system is free from the Ostrogradsky-type ghost.

Primordial Helical Magnetic Fields from Inflation?

We revisit the mechanism of helical magnetogenesis during inflation with a parity violating interaction using the formalism of stochastic inflation. One of the polarization of the gauge field undergoes tachyonic growth leading to the generation of helical magnetic fields. We obtain the Langevin equations associated with the electromagnetic fields which are in the form of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic differential equations. Consequently, the tachyonic growth of the helical magnetic fields is balanced by a mean-reverting process of stochastic dynamics such that the magnetic fields settle down to an equilibrium state with the amplitude smaller than what is obtained in the absence of the stochastic noises. Working in the parameter space of the model where both the backreaction and the strong coupling problems are under control the model does not provide large enough seed to be amplified by the galactic dynamo as the source of the magnetic fields observed on cosmological scales.

Analytic study of dark photon and gravitational wave production from axion

Axion-like fields heavier than about $10^{-27}$eV are expected to oscillate in the radiation dominated epoch when the Hubble parameter drops below their mass. Considering the Chern-Simons coupling with a dark gauge boson, large amount of dark photons are produced during a short time interval through tachyonic resonance instability. The produced dark photons then source gravitational tensor modes leading to chiral gravitational waves. Through this process, one can indirectly probe a large parameter space of coupled axion-dark photon models. In this work we first find an analytic expression for the number density of the dark photons produced during the tachyonic resonance regime. Second, by using the saddle point approximation we find an analytic expression for the gravitational wave spectrum in terms of the mass, coupling and misalignment angle. Our analytic results can be used for the observational analysis of these types of scenarios.

Vector dark matter production from inflation with symmetry breaking

We present a scenario of vector dark matter production from symmetry breaking at the end of inflation. In this model, the accumulated energy density associated with the quantum fluctuations of the dark photon accounts for the present energy density of dark matter. The inflaton is a real scalar field while a heavy complex scalar field, such as the waterfall of hybrid inflation, is charged under the dark gauge field. After the heavy field becomes tachyonic at the end of inflation, rolling rapidly towards its global minimum, the dark photon acquires mass via the Higgs mechanism. To prevent the decay of the vector field energy density during inflation, we introduce couplings between the inflaton and the gauge field such that the energy is pumped to the dark sector. The setup can generate the observed dark matter abundance for a wide range of the dark photon's mass and with the reheat temperature around $10^{12}$ GeV. The model predicts the formation of cosmic strings at the end of inflation with the tensions which are consistent with the CMB upper bounds.
