Fields Annihilation and Particles Creation in DBI inflation

We consider a model of DBI inflation where two stacks of mobile branes are moving ultra relativistically in a warped throat. The stack closer to the tip of the throat is annihilated with the background anti-branes while inflation proceeds by the second stack. The effects of branes annihilation and particles creation during DBI inflation on the curvature perturbations power spectrum and the scalar spectral index are studied. We show that for super-horizon scales, modes which are outside the sound horizon at the time of branes collision, the spectral index has a shift to blue spectrum compared to the standard DBI inflation. For small scales the power spectrum approaches to its background DBI inflation value with the decaying superimposed oscillatory modulations.

No Large Scale Curvature Perturbations during Waterfall of Hybrid Inflation

In this paper the possibility of generating large scale curvature perturbations induced from the entropic perturbations during the waterfall phase transition of standard hybrid inflation model is studied. We show that whether or not appreciable amounts of large scale curvature perturbations are produced during the waterfall phase transition depend crucially on the competition between the classical and the quantum mechanical back-reactions to terminate inflation. If one considers only the classical evolution of the system we show that the highly blue-tilted entropy perturbations induce highly blue-tilted large scale curvature perturbations during the waterfall phase transition which dominate over the original adiabatic curvature perturbations. However, we show that the quantum back-reactions of the waterfall field inhomogeneities produced during the phase transition dominate completely over the classical back-reactions. The cumulative quantum back-reactions of very small scales tachyonic modes terminate inflation very efficiently and shut off the curvature perturbations evolution during the waterfall phase transition. This indicates that the standard hybrid inflation model is safe under large scale curvature perturbations during the waterfall phase transition.

M-flation: Inflation From Matrix Valued Scalar Fields

We propose an inflationary scenario, M-flation, in which inflation is driven by three $N\times N$ hermitian matrices $Φ_i, i=1,2,3$. The inflation potential of our model, which is strongly motivated from string theory, is constructed from $Φ_{i}$ and their commutators. We show that one can consistently restrict the classical dynamics to a sector in which the $Φ_i$ are proportional to the $N\times N$ irreducible representations of SU(2). In this sector our model effectively behaves as an N-flation model with $3 N^2$ number of fields and the effective inflaton field has a super-Planckian field value. Furthermore, the fine-tunings associated with unnaturally small couplings in the chaotic type inflationary scenarios are removed. Due to the matrix nature of the inflaton fields there are $3N^2-1$ extra scalar fields in the dynamics. These have the observational effects such as production of iso-curvature perturbations on cosmic microwave background. Moreover, the existence of these extra scalars provides us with a natural preheating mechanism and exit from inflation. As the effective inflaton field can traverse super-Planckian distances in the field space, the model is capable of producing a considerable amount of gravity waves that can be probed by future CMB polarization experiments such as PLANCK, QUIET and CMBPOL.

Brane Annihilations during Inflation

We investigate brane inflation driven by two stacks of mobile branes in a throat. The stack closest to the bottom of the throat annihilates first with antibranes, resulting in particle production and a change of the equation of state parameter w. We calculate analytically some observable signatures of the collision; related decays are common in multi-field inflation, providing the motivation for this case study. The discontinuity in w enters the matching conditions relating perturbations in the remaining degree of freedom before and after the collision, affecting the power-spectrum of curvature perturbations. We find an oscillatory modulation of the power-spectrum for scales within the horizon at the time of the collision, and a slightly redder spectrum on super-horizon scales. We comment on implications for staggered inflation.

Matrix Inflation and the Landscape of its Potential

Recently we introduced an inflationary setup in which the inflaton fields are matrix valued scalar fields with a generic quartic potential, M-flation. In this work we study the landscape of various inflationary models arising from M-flation. The landscape of the inflationary potential arises from the dynamics of concentric multiple branes in appropriate flux compactifications of string theory. After discussing the classical landscape of the theory we study the possibility of transition among various inflationary models appearing at different points on the landscape, mapping the quantum landscape of M-flation. As specific examples, we study some two-field inflationary models arising from this theory in the landscape.

Inflation from Charged Scalar and Primordial Magnetic Fields?

A model of inflation is presented where the inflaton field is a complex scalar field coupled to a U(1) gauge field. Due to the axial symmetry of the potential, the inflation is driven by the radial direction while the angular field is gauged by U(1). Due to the coupling of the inflaton to the gauge field, a time dependent mass term for the gauge field is generated dynamically and conformal invariance is broken. We study whether a significant amount of primordial magnetic fields can be generated during inflation by allowing a time-dependent U(1) gauge kinetic coupling.

Cosmic Strings Collision in Cosmological Backgrounds

The collisions of cosmic strings loops and the dynamics of junctions formations in expanding backgrounds are studied. The key parameter controlling the dynamics of junctions formation, the cosmic strings zipping and unzipping is the relative size of the loops compared to the Hubble expansion rate at the time of collision. We study analytically and numerically these processes for large super-horizon size loops, for small sub-horizon size loops as well as for loops with the radii comparable to the Hubble expansion rate at the time of collision.

Tachyonic Resonance Preheating in Expanding Universe

In this paper the tachyonic resonance preheating generated from the bosonic trilinear $ϕχ^2$ interactions in an expanding Universe is studied. In $λϕ^4/4$ inflationary model the trilinear interaction, in contrast to the four-legs $ϕ^2χ^2$, breaks the conformal symmetry explicitly and the resonant source term becomes non-periodic, making the Floquet theorem inapplicable. We find that the occupation number of the produced $χ$-particles has a non-linear exponential growth with exponent $\sim x^{3/2}$, where $x$ is the conformal time. This should be contrasted with preheating from a periodic resonant source, arising for example from the four-legs $ϕ^2χ^2$ interaction, where the occupation number has a linear exponential growth. We present an analytic method to compute the interference term coming from phases accumulated in non-tachyonic scattering regions and show that the effects of the interference term causes ripples on $x^{3/2}$ curve, a result which is confirmed by numerical analysis. Studying the effects of back-reaction of the $χ$-particles, we show that tachyonic resonance preheating in our model can last long enough to transfer most of the energy from the background inflation field $ϕ$, providing an efficient model for preheating in the chaotic inflation models.

Zipping and Unzipping of Cosmic String Loops in Collision

In this paper the collision of two cosmic string loops is studied. After collision junctions are formed and the loops are entangled. We show that after their formation the junctions start to unzip and the loops disentangle. This analysis provides a theoretical understanding of the unzipping effect observed in numerical simulations of a network of cosmic strings with more than one type of cosmic strings. The unzipping phenomena have important effects in the evolution of cosmic string networks when junctions are formed upon collision, such as in a network of cosmic superstrings.

Gravitational Radiation by Cosmic Strings in a Junction

The formalism for computing the gravitational power radiation from excitations on cosmic strings forming a junction is presented and applied to the simple case of co-planar strings at a junction when the excitations are generated along one string leg. The effects of polarization of the excitations and of the back-reaction of the gravitational radiation on the small scale structure of the strings are studied.

Dynamics of D3-D7 Brane Inflation in Throats

Dynamics of D3-branes in models of warped D3-D7 inflationary set up is studied where perturbative $α'$ correction to the Kähler potential and the nonperturbative corrections to the superpotential are included. It is shown that a dS minimum can be obtained without introducing anti-branes. Some specific configurations of D7-branes embedding were studied. After stabilizing the angular directions, it is shown that the resulting D3-D7 potential of the radial position of the D3-brane is too steep to allow slow-roll inflation. Depending on D7-branes embedding and the stabilized angular directions, the mobile D3-brane can move either towards the tip of the throat or towards the D7-branes.

On The Warped Heterotic Axion

We study the axion in a warped heterotic background. It is shown that the axion decay constant, f_a, is sensitive to the warped mass scale of the throat. As an explicit model, we construct a novel AdS-like geometry in heterotic string theory. We demonstrate that in this background f_a is given by the mass scale of the longest throat in the compactification. The question of obtaining f_a within the required bound 10^9--10^12 GeV is reduced to the construction of a throat inside the heterotic string theory compactification with warped mass scale in the above range. This provides a natural mechanism for realising the axion in heterotic string theory.

Energy Radiation by Cosmic Superstrings in Brane Inflation

The dominant method of energy loss by a loop of cosmic D-strings in models of warped brane inflation is studied. It is shown that the energy loss via Ramond-Ramond field radiation can dominate by many orders of magnitude over the energy radiation via gravitational wave emission. The ratio of these two energy loss mechanisms depends on the energy scale of inflation, the mass scale of string theory and whether it is a single-throat or a multi-throat inflationary scenario. This can have important consequences for the detection of cosmic superstrings in the near future. It is argued that the bounds from cosmic microwave background anisotropies and big bang nucleosynthesis are the dominant cosmological sources to constrain the physical parameters of the network of cosmic superstrings, whereas the role of the gravitational wave-based experiments may be secondary.

Cosmological Perturbations on a Bouncing Brane

The cosmological perturbations on a bouncing brane are studied. The brane is moving inside a Klebanov-Strassler throat where the infra-red region of the geometry is smoothly cut off. For an observer confined to the world-volume of the brane, this results in a non-singular bouncing mirage cosmology. We have calculated the scalar perturbations corresponding to the normal displacements of the brane. This is performed in the probe brane limit where the gravitational back-reaction of the brane on the bulk throat is absent. Our model provides a framework for studying the transfer of fluctuations from a contracting to an expanding phase. We find that the spectral index of the dominant mode of the metric fluctuation is un-changed, unlike what is obtained by gluing contracting to expanding Einstein universes with the help of the usual matching conditions. Assuming that the fluctuations start off in a vacuum state on sub-Hubble scales during the contracting phase, it is shown that the resulting spectral index n_s on super-Hubble scales in the expanding phase has a large blue tilt. When the brane is moving slowly inside the throat and its kinetic energy is negligible compared to its rest mass, one finds n_s=3. For a fast-rolling brane with a large kinetic energy, the spectral index is n_s = 2.3. This may put severe constraints on models of mirage cosmology.

Lumps in the throat

We study classical lump solutions in a warped throat where brane inflation takes place. Some of the solitonic or lump solutions that we study here are the (p,q) cosmic strings and their junctions, cosmic necklaces and semi-local strings and generic semi-local defects. We show how various wrapping modes of D3-branes may be used to study all these defects in one interpolating set-up. Our construction allows us to study (p,q)-string junctions in curved backgrounds and in the presence of non-trivial RR fluxes. We extend the junction construction to allow for the possibility of cosmic necklaces, and show how these new lump solutions form a consistent picture in the inflationary brane models. We also give a generic construction of semi-local defects in these backgrounds, and argue that our construction encompasses all possible constructions of semi-local defects with any global symmetries. The cosmological implications of these configurations are briefly studied.

Uplifting and Inflation with D3 Branes

Back-reaction effects can modify the dynamics of mobile D3 branes moving within type IIB vacua, in a way which has recently become calculable. We identify some of the ways these effects can alter inflationary scenarios, with the following three results: (1) By examining how the forces on the brane due to moduli-stabilizing interactions modify the angular motion of D3 branes moving in Klebanov-Strassler type throats, we show how previous slow-roll analyses can remain unchanged for some brane trajectories, while being modified for other trajectories. These forces cause the D3 brane to sink to the bottom of the throat except in a narrow region close to the D7 brane, and do not ameliorate the η-problem of slow roll inflation in these throats; (2) We argue that a recently-proposed back-reaction on the dilaton field can be used to provide an alternative way of uplifting these compactifications to Minkowski or De Sitter vacua, without the need for a supersymmetry-breaking anti-D3 brane; and (3) by including also the D-term forces which arise when supersymmetry-breaking fluxes are included on D7 branes we identify the 4D supergravity interactions which capture the dynamics of D3 motion in D3/D7 inflationary scenarios. The form of these potentials sheds some light on recent discussions of how symmetries constrain D term interactions in the low-energy theory.

Dielectric (p,q) Strings in a Throat

We calculate the (p,q) string spectrum in a warped deformed conifold using the dielectric brane method. The spectrum is shown to have the same functional form as in the dual picture of a wrapped D3-brane with electric and magnetic fluxes on its world volume. The agreement is exact in the limit where q is large. We also calculate the dielectric spectrum in the S-dual picture. The spectrum in the S-dual picture has the same form as in the original picture but it is not exactly S-dual invariant due to an interchange of Casimirs of the non-Abelian gauge symmetries. We argue that in order to restore S-duality invariance the non-Abelian brane action should be refined, probably by a better prescription for the non-Abelian trace operation.
