On-Demand Generation of Traveling Cat States Using a Parametric Oscillator

We theoretically propose a method for on-demand generation of traveling Schrödinger cat states, namely, quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states of traveling fields. This method is based on deterministic generation of intracavity cat states using a Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) via quantum adiabatic evolution. We show that the cat states generated inside a KPO can be released into an output mode by controlling the parametric pump amplitude dynamically. We further show that the quality of the traveling cat states can be improved by using a shortcut-to-adiabaticity technique.

Dissipative quantum bifurcation machine: Quantum heating of coupled nonlinear oscillators

A network of driven nonlinear oscillators without dissipation has recently been proposed for solving combinatorial optimization problems via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point. Here we investigate the behavior of the quantum bifurcation machine in the presence of dissipation. Our numerical study suggests that the output probability distribution of the dissipative quantum bifurcation machine is Boltzmann-like, where the energy in the Boltzmann distribution corresponds to the cost function of the optimization problem. We explain the Boltzmann distribution by generalizing the concept of quantum heating in a single oscillator to the case of multiple coupled oscillators. The present result also suggests that such driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator networks can be applied to Boltzmann sampling, which is used, e.g., for Boltzmann machine learning in the field of artificial intelligence.

Work-sharing of qubits in topological error corrections

Topological error-correcting codes, such as surface codes and color codes, are promising because quantum operations are realized by two-dimensionally (2D) arrayed quantum bits (qubits). However, physical wiring of electrodes to qubits is complicated, and 3D integration for the wiring requires further development of fabrication technologies. Here, we propose a method to reduce the congestion of wiring to qubits by just adding a SWAP gate after each controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. SWAP gates exchange roles of qubits. Then, the roles of qubits are shared between different qubits. We found that our method transforms the qubit layout and reduces the number of qubits that cannot be accessed two-dimensionally. We show that fully 2D layouts including both qubits and control electrodes can be achieved for surface and color codes of minimum sizes. This method will be beneficial to simplifications of fabrication process of quantum circuits in addition to improvements of reliability of qubit system.

Universal quantum computation with a nonlinear oscillator network

It has recently been shown that a parametrically driven oscillator with Kerr nonlinearity yields a Schrödinger cat state via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point and a network of such nonlinear oscillators can be used for solving combinatorial optimization problems by bifurcation-based adiabatic quantum computation [H. Goto, Sci. Rep. \textbf{6}, 21686 (2016)]. Here we theoretically show that such a nonlinear oscillator network with controllable parameters can also be used for universal quantum computation. The initialization is achieved by a quantum-mechanical bifurcation based on quantum adiabatic evolution, which yields a Schrödinger cat state. All the elementary quantum gates are also achieved by quantum adiabatic evolution, in which dynamical phases accompanying the adiabatic evolutions are controlled by the system parameters. Numerical simulation results indicate that high gate fidelities can be achieved, where no dissipation is assumed.

Bifurcation-based adiabatic quantum computation with a nonlinear oscillator network: Toward quantum soft computing

The dynamics of nonlinear systems qualitatively change depending on their parameters, which is called bifurcation. A quantum-mechanical nonlinear oscillator can yield a quantum superposition of two oscillation states, known as a Schrödinger cat state, via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point. Here we propose a quantum computer comprising such quantum nonlinear oscillators, instead of quantum bits, to solve hard combinatorial optimization problems. The nonlinear oscillator network finds optimal solutions via quantum adiabatic evolution, where nonlinear terms are increased slowly, in contrast to conventional adiabatic quantum computation or quantum annealing, where quantum fluctuation terms are decreased slowly. As a result of numerical simulations, it is concluded that quantum superposition and quantum fluctuation work effectively to find optimal solutions. It is also notable that the present computer is analogous to neural computers, which are also networks of nonlinear components. Thus, the present scheme will open new possibilities for quantum computation, nonlinear science, and artificial intelligence.

Two-photon interference of multimode two-photon pairs with an unbalanced interferometer

Two-photon interference of multimode two-photon pairs produced by an optical parametric oscillator has been observed for the first time with an unbalanced interferometer. The time correlation between the multimode two photons has a multi-peaked structure. This property of the multimode two-photon state induces two-photon interference depending on delay time. The nonclassicality of this interference is also discussed.

Observation of an oscillatory correlation function of multimode two-photon pairs

An oscillatory correlation function has been observed by the coincidence counting of multimode two-photon pairs produced with a degenerate optical parametric oscillator far below threshold. The coherent superposition of the multimode two-photon pairs provides the oscillation in the intensity correlation function. The experimental data are well fitted to a theoretical curve.
