Exploring Student Expectations and Confidence in Learning Analytics

Learning Analytics (LA) is nowadays ubiquitous in many educational systems, providing the ability to collect and analyze student data in order to understand and optimize learning and the environments in which it occurs. On the other hand, the collection of data requires to comply with the growing demand regarding privacy legislation. In this paper, we use the Student Expectation of Learning Analytics Questionnaire (SELAQ) to analyze the expectations and confidence of students from different faculties regarding the processing of their data for Learning Analytics purposes. This allows us to identify four clusters of students through clustering algorithms: Enthusiasts, Realists, Cautious and Indifferents. This structured analysis provides valuable insights into the acceptance and criticism of Learning Analytics among students.

Ridepooling and public bus services: A comparative case-study

This case-study aims at a comparison of the service quality of time-tabled buses as compared to on-demand ridepooling cabs in the late evening hours in the city of Wuppertal, Germany. To evaluate the service quality of ridepooling as compared to bus services, and to simulate bus rides during the evening hours, transport requests are generated using a predictive simulation. To this end, a framework in the programming language R is created, which automatically combines generalized linear models for count regression to model the demand at each bus stop. Furthermore, we use classification models for the prediction of trip destinations. To solve the resulting dynamic dial-a-ride problem, a rolling-horizon algorithm based on the iterative solution of Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Models (MILP) is used. A feasible-path heuristic is used to enhance the performance of the algorithm in presence of high request densities. This allows an estimation of the number of cabs needed depending on the weekday to realize the same or a better general service quality as the bus system.

A Convenient Infinite Dimensional Framework for Generative Adversarial Learning

In recent years, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have demonstrated impressive experimental results while there are only a few works that foster statistical learning theory for GANs. In this work, we propose an infinite dimensional theoretical framework for generative adversarial learning. We assume that the probability density functions of the underlying measure are uniformly bounded, $k$-times $α$-Hölder differentiable ($C^{k,α}$) and uniformly bounded away from zero. Under these assumptions, we show that the Rosenblatt transformation induces an optimal generator, which is realizable in the hypothesis space of $C^{k,α}$-generators. With a consistent definition of the hypothesis space of discriminators, we further show that the Jensen-Shannon divergence between the distribution induced by the generator from the adversarial learning procedure and the data generating distribution converges to zero. Under certain regularity assumptions on the density of the data generating process, we also provide rates of convergence based on chaining and concentration.

Inverse Scattering Problem for Sturm--Liouville Operators

On the space $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ the Sturm-Liouville operator $L$ with certain behavior of the potential at infinity is considered. It is proved that $L$ is uniquely determined by its scattering data. The recovery of $L$ is reduced to the solving of a certain linear integral equation.

Random Schrödinger operators with a background potential

We consider one-dimensional random Schrödinger operators with a background potential, arising in the inverse problem of scattering. We study the influence of the background potential on the essential spectrum of the random Schrödinger operator and obtain Anderson Localization for a larger class of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators. Further, we prove the existence of the integrated density of states and give a formula for it.
