Estimation of length scale of RS II-$p$ braneworld model through perturbations in Helium's atom ground state energy

We put to the test an effective three-dimensional electrostatic potential, obtained effectively by considering an electrostatic source inside a (5+$p$)-dimensional braneworld scenario with $p$ compact and one infinite spacial extra dimensions in the RS II-$p$ model, for $p=1$ and $p=2$. This potential is regular at the source and matches the standard Coulomb potential outside a neighborhood. We use variational and perturbative approximation methods to calculate corrections to the ground energy of the Helium atom modified by this potential, by making use of a 6 and 39-parameter trial wave function of Hylleraas type for the ground state. These corrections to the ground-state energy are compared with experimental data for Helium atom in order to set bounds for the extra dimensions length scale. We find that these bounds are less restrictive than the ones obtained by Morales et. al. through a calculation using the Lamb shift in Hydrogen.

High-order quantum back-reaction and quantum cosmology with a positive cosmological constant

When quantum back-reaction by fluctuations, correlations and higher moments of a state becomes strong, semiclassical quantum mechanics resembles a dynamical system with a high-dimensional phase space. Here, systematic computational methods to derive the dynamical equations including all quantum corrections to high order in the moments are introduced, together with a (deparameterized) quantum cosmological example to illustrate some implications. The results show, for instance, that the Gaussian form of an initial state is maintained only briefly, but that the evolving state settles down to a new characteristic shape afterwards. Remarkably, even in the regime of large high-order moments, we observe a strong convergence within all considered orders that supports the use of this effective approach.

Perturbative Degrees of Freedom in Loop Quantum Gravity: Anisotropies

The relation between an isotropic and an anisotropic model in loop quantum cosmology is discussed in detail, comparing the strict symmetry reduction with a perturbative implementation of symmetry. While the latter cannot be done in a canonical manner, it allows to consider the dynamics including the role of small non-symmetric degrees of freedom for the symmetric evolution. This serves as a model for the general situation of perturbative degrees of freedom in a background independent quantization such as loop quantum gravity, and for the more complicated addition of perturbative inhomogeneities. While being crucial for cosmological phenomenology, it is shown that perturbative non-symmetric degrees of freedom do not allow definitive conclusions for the singularity issue and in such a situation could even lead to wrong claims.

The Entropy of the Rotating Charged Black Threebrane from a Brane-Antibrane System

We show that a model based on a D3-brane--anti-D3-brane system at finite temperature, proposed previously as a microscopic description of the non-rotating black threebrane of type IIB supergravity arbitrarily far from extremality, can also successfully reproduce the entropy of the rotating threebrane with arbitrary charge (including the neutral case, which corresponds to the Kerr black hole in seven dimensions). Our results appear to confirm in particular the need for a peculiar condition on the energy of the two gases involved in the model, whose physical interpretation remains to be elucidated.

New Solution of D=11 Supergravity on S^7 from D=4

A new static partially twisted solution of N=4, SO(4) gauged supergravity in D=11 is obtained in this work using Cvetiĉ et al embedding of four dimensional into eleven dimensional supergravities. In four dimensions we get two solutions: an asymptotic one corresponding to $AdS_4$ and a near horizon fixed point solution of the form $AdS_2\times H_2$. Hence, while the former solution has 32 supercharges the latter turns out to have only 4 conserved. Moreover, we managed to find an exact interpolating solution, thus connecting the above two. Aiming at a future study of $AdS/CFT$ duality for the theory at hand we derived the Penrose limit of the four dimensional solutions. Interestingly the pp-wave limit of the near horizon solution suggests itself as being of the supernumerary supersymmetric type. In D=11 we exhibit the uplift of the four dimensional solutions: one associated to $AdS_4\times S^7$ and the other to a foliation of $AdS_2\times H_2 \times S^7$, as well as their pp-wave limits.
