Torsional oscillations of neutron stars in scalar-tensor theory of gravity

We study torsional oscillations of neutron stars in the scalar-tensor theory of gravity using the relativistic Cowling approximation. We compute unperturbed neutron star models adopting realistic equations of state for the neutron star's core and crust. For scalar-tensor theories that allow for spontaneous scalarization, the crust thickness can be significantly smaller than in general relativity. We derive the perturbation equation describing torsional oscillations in scalar-tensor theory, and we solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem to find the oscillation frequencies. The fundamental mode (overtone) frequencies become smaller (larger) than in general relativity for scalarized stellar models. Torsional oscillation frequencies may yield information on the crust microphysics if microphysics effects are not degenerate with strong-gravity effects, such as those due to scalarization. To address this issue, we consider two different models for the equation of state of the crust and we look at the effects of electron screening. The effect of scalarization on torsional oscillation frequencies turns out to be smaller than uncertainties in the microphysics for all spontaneous scalarization models allowed by binary pulsar observations. Our study shows that the observation of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) following giant flares can be used to constrain the microphysics of neutron star crusts, whether spontaneous scalarization occurs or not.

New signatures of the dynamical Casimir effect in a superconducting circuit

We found new signatures of the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) in the context of superconducting circuits. We show that if the recent experiment made by Wilson {\it et al}, which brought the DCE into reality for the first time, is repeated with slight modifications (for instance, different values for the capacitance of the SQUID), three remarkable results will show up, namely: {\it (i)} a quite different spectral distribution for the created particles, deviating from the typical parabolic shape; {\it (ii)} an enhancement by a factor of approximately $5 \times 10^3 $ in the number of created particles with half driven frequency of the effective moving mirror and {\it (iii)} an enhancement by a factor of $3 \times 10^2$ in the particle creation rate. These results may guide the experimentalists in their search for alternative routes to observe the DCE in future experiments.

Time-dependent Robin boundary conditions in the dynamical Casimir effect

Motivated by experiments in which moving boundaries are simulated by time-dependent properties of static systems, we discuss the model of a massless scalar field submitted to a time-dependent Robin boundary condition (BC) at a static mirror in 1+1 dimensions. Using a perturbative approach, we compute the spectral distribution of the created particles and the total particle creation rate, considering a thermal state as the initial field state.

Time evolution of the energy density inside a non-static cavity with a thermal, coherent and a Schrodinger cat state

In this paper we investigate the time evolution of the energy density for a real massless scalar field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity, taking as basis the exact numerical approach purposed by Cole and Schieve. Considering Neunmann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, we investigate the following initial states of the field: vacuum, thermal state, the coherent state and the Schrodinger cat state.

Exact solution for the energy density inside a one-dimensional non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state

We study the exact solution for the energy density of a real massless scalar field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state, taking into account the Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. This work generalizes the exact solution proposed by Cole and Schieve in the context of the Dirichlet boundary condition and vacuum as the initial state. We investigate diagonal states, examining the vacuum and thermal field as particular cases. We also study non-diagonal initial field states, taking as examples the coherent and Schrodinger cat states.
