On the absence of shock waves and vacuum birefringence in Born--Infeld electrodynamics

We study the interaction of two counter-propagating electromagnetic waves in vacuum in the Born-Infeld electrodynamics. First we investigate the Born case for linearly polarized beams, ${\bf E}\cdot{\bf B}=0$, i. e. $\mathfrak{G}^2=0$ (crossed field configuration), which is identical for Born-Infeld and Born electrodynamics; subsequently we study the general Born-Infeld case for beams which are nonlinearly polarized, $\mathfrak{G}^2\neq0$. In both cases, we show that the nonlinear field equations decouple using self-similar solutions and investigate the shock wave formation. We show that the only nonlinear solutions are exceptional travelling wave solutions which propagate with constant speed and which do not turn into shocks for our approximation. We obtain two types of exceptional wave solutions, then we numerically analyze which phase velocities correspond to the counter- or co-propagating beams and subsequently we determine the direction of propagation of the exceptional waves.

Electromagnetic waves in Born Electrodynamics

We study two counter--propagating electromagnetic waves in the vacuum within the framework of the Born--Infeld theory in quantum electrodynamics. By choosing the crossed field case ${\bf E}\cdot{\bf B}=0$, i.e. $\mathfrak{G}^2=0$, the Born--Infeld Lagrangian reduces to the Born Lagrangian, therefore for this special case we present study which is identical for the Born--Infeld and the Born electrodynamics. In this paper, we show that the non--linear field equations decouple for ordinary wave case using self-similar solutions and we investigate the shock wave steepening. We show that the only solutions are exceptional traveling wave solutions which propagate with constant speed and which do not turn into shocks. We discuss the phase shift and the cross section of the process to be measured together with the our proposed direct detection of the photon--photon scattering \cite{KadlecovaKornBulanov2019,KadlecovaMine2019}. This work serves as a preliminary study towards analyzing the waves in the more general case in the Born--Infeld theory.

Properties of Finite Amplitude Electromagnetic Waves propagating in the Quantum Vacuum

We study two counter-propagating electromagnetic waves in the vacuum within the framework of the Heisenberg-Euler formalism in quantum electrodynamics. We show that the non-linear field equations decouple for ordinary wave case and can be solved exactly. We solve the non-linear field equations assuming the solution in a form of a Riemann wave. We discuss the properties of the nonlinear electromagnetic wave propagating in the quantum vacuum, such as the wave steepening, subsequent generation of high order harmonics and electromagnetic shock wave formation with electron-positron pair generation at the shock wave front.

Gravitational wave generation by interaction of high power lasers with matter using shock waves

Gravitational wave generation by a strong shock wave in the interaction of high power laser with matter is analyzed in linear approximation of gravitational theory. The analytical formulas and estimates are derived for the metric perturbations and the radiated power of the generated gravitational waves. Furthermore the characteristics of polarization and the behavior of test particles are investigated in the presence of gravitational wave which will be important for the detection.

The gyraton solutions on generalized Melvin universe with cosmological constant

We present and analyze new exact gyraton solutions of algebraic type II on generalized Melvin universe of type D which admit non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ$. We show that it generalizes both, gyraton solutions on Melvin and on direct product spacetimes. When we set $Λ= 0$ we get solutions on Melvin spacetime and for $Σ= 1$ we obtain solutions on direct product spacetimes. We demonstrate that the solutions are member of the Kundt family of spacetimes as its subcases. We show that the Einstein equations reduce to a set of equations on the transverse 2-space. We also discuss the polynomial scalar invariants which are non-constant in general but constant for sub-solutions on direct product spacetimes.

Gravitational waves generated by laser accelerated relativistic ions

The generation of gravitational waves by laser accelerated relativistic ions is investigated. The piston and light sail models of laser plasma acceleration are considered and analytical expressions for space-time metric perturbation are derived. For both models the dependence of gravitational waves amplitude on the laser and plasma parameters as well as gravitational waves spectrum and angular distribution are examined

Gravitational wave generation by interaction of high power lasers with matter. Part II: Ablation and Piston models

We analyze theoretical models of gravitational waves generation in the interaction of high intensity laser with matter, namely ablation and piston models. We analyse the generated gravitational waves in linear approximation of gravitational theory. We derive the analytical formulas and estimates for the metric perturbations and the radiated power of generated gravitational waves. Furthermore we investigate the characteristics of polarization and the behaviour of test particles in the presence of gravitational wave which will be important for the detection.

Gravitational field of gyratons on various background spacetimes

In this work we have found and analyzed several gyraton solutions on various non--trivial backgrounds in the large Kundt class of spacetimes. Namely, the gyraton solutions on direct product spacetimes, gyraton solutions on Melvin universe and its generalization which includes the cosmological constant. These solutions are of algebraic type II. Also we have investigated type III solutions within the Kundt class and we have found the gyratons on de Sitter spacetime. We have generalized the gyraton solutions on direct product spacetimes to higher dimensions. The chapters 4 and 5 are published for the first time.
