Inclusive Production of Heavy Quarkonia in pNRQCD

We develop a formalism for computing inclusive production cross sections of heavy quarkonia based on the nonrelativistic QCD and the potential nonrelativistic QCD effective field theories. Our formalism applies to strongly coupled quarkonia, which include excited charmonium and bottomonium states. Analogously to heavy quarkonium decay processes, we express nonrelativistic QCD long-distance matrix elements in terms of quarkonium wavefunctions at the origin and universal gluonic correlators. Our expressions for the long-distance matrix elements are valid up to corrections of order $1/N_c^2$. These expressions enhance the predictive power of the nonrelativistic effective field theory approach to inclusive production processes by reducing the number of nonperturbative unknowns, and make possible first-principle determinations of long-distance matrix elements once the gluonic correlators are known. Based on this formalism, we compute the production cross sections of $P$-wave charmonia and bottomonia at the LHC, and find good agreement with measurements.

Inclusive Hadroproduction of $P$-Wave Heavy Quarkonia in Potential Nonrelativistic QCD

We compute the color-singlet and color-octet nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) long-distance matrix elements for inclusive production of $P$-wave quarkonia in the framework of potential NRQCD. In this way, the color-octet NRQCD long-distance matrix element can be determined without relying on measured cross section data, which has not been possible so far. We obtain inclusive cross sections of $χ_{cJ}$ and $χ_{bJ}$ at the LHC, which are in good agreement with data. In principle, the formalism developed in this Letter can be applied to all inclusive production processes of heavy quarkonia.

${\overline{\rm MS}}$ renormalization of $S$-wave quarkonium wavefunctions at the origin

We compute $S$-wave quarkonium wavefunctions at the origin in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme based on nonrelativistic effective field theories. We include the effects of nonperturbative long-distance behaviors of the potentials, while we determine the short-distance behaviors of the potentials in perturbative QCD. We obtain $\overline{\rm MS}$-renormalized quarkonium wavefunctions at the origin that have the correct scale dependences that are expected from perturbative QCD, so that the scale dependences cancel in physical quantities. Based on the calculation of the wavefunctions at the origin, we make model-independent predictions of decay constants and electromagnetic decay rates of $S$-wave charmonia and bottomonia, and compare them with measurements. We find that the poor convergence of perturbative QCD corrections are substantially improved when we include corrections to the wavefunctions at the origin in the calculation of decay constants and decay rates.

FeynOnium: Using FeynCalc for automatic calculations in Nonrelativistic Effective Field Theories

We present new results on FeynOnium, an ongoing project to develop a general purpose software toolkit for semi-automatic symbolic calculations in nonrelativistic Effective Field Theories (EFTs). Building upon FeynCalc, an existing Mathematica package for symbolic evaluation of Feynman diagrams, we have created a powerful framework for automatizing calculations in nonrelativistic EFTs (NREFTs) at tree- and 1-loop level. This is achieved by exploiting the novel features of FeynCalc that support manipulations of Cartesian tensors, Pauli matrices and nonstandard loop integrals. Additional operations that are common in nonrelativistic EFT calculations are implemented in a dedicated add-on called FeynOnium. While our current focus is on EFTs for strong interactions of heavy quarks, extensions to other systems that admit a nonrelativistic EFT description are planned for the future. All our codes are open-source and publicly available. Furthermore, we provide several example calculations that demonstrate how FeynOnium can be employed to reproduce known results from the literature.

New method for fitting coefficients in standard model effective theory

We present an alternative method for carrying out a principal-component analysis of Wilson coefficients in standard model effective field theory (SMEFT). The method is based on singular-value decomposition (SVD). The SVD method provides information about the sensitivity of experimental observables to physics beyond the standard model that is not accessible in the Fisher-information method. In principle, the SVD method can also have computational advantages over diagonalization of the Fisher information matrix. We demonstrate the SVD method by applying it to the dimension-6 coefficients for the process of top-quark decay to a $b$ quark and a $W$ boson and use this example to illustrate some pitfalls in widely used fitting procedures. We also outline an iterative procedure for applying the SVD method to dimension-8 SMEFT coefficients.

Covariant calculation of a two-loop test of nonrelativistic QCD factorization

We test the nonrelativistic QCD factorization conjecture for inclusive quarkonium production at two loops by carrying out a covariant calculation of the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) long-distance matrix element (LDME) for a heavy-quark pair in an $S$-wave, color-octet state to fragment into a heavy-quark pair in a color-singlet state of arbitrary orbital angular momentum. The NRQCD factorization conjecture for the universality of the LDME requires that infrared divergences that it contains be independent of the direction of the Wilson line that appears in its definition. We find this to be the case in our calculation. The results of our calculation differ in some respects from those of a previous calculation that was carried out by Nayak, Qiu, and Sterman using light-cone methods. We have identified the sources of some of these differences. The results of both calculations are consistent with the NRQCD factorization conjecture. However, the general principle that underlies this confirmation of NRQCD factorization at two-loop order has yet to be revealed.

Decay and electromagnetic production of strongly coupled quarkonia in pNRQCD

We improve the pNRQCD approach to annihilation processes of heavy quarkonium and make first pNRQCD predictions for exclusive electromagnetic production of heavy quarkonium. We consider strongly coupled quarkonia, i.e., quarkonia that are not Coulombic bound states. Possible strongly coupled quarkonia include excited charmonium and bottomonium states. For these, pNRQCD provides expressions for the decay and exclusive electromagnetic production NRQCD matrix elements that depend on the wavefunctions at the origin and few universal gluon field correlators. We compute electromagnetic decay widths and exclusive production cross sections, and inclusive decay widths into light hadrons for $P$-wave quarkonia at relative order $v^2$ and leading order, respectively. We also compute the decay widths of $2S$ and $3S$ bottomonium states into lepton pairs and their ratios with the inclusive widths into light hadrons at relative order $v^2$.

Pseudoscalar Quarkonium+gamma Production at NLL+NLO accuracy

We consider the exclusive pseudoscalar heavy-quarkonium (eta_{b,c}) production in association with a photon at future lepton colliders where the collider energies of O(10^2) GeV are far greater than the quarkonium mass. At these energies, the logarithm of mass to collision energy becomes increasingly large hence its resummation becomes particularly important. By making use of the light-cone-distribution factorization formula, we resum the logarithms up to next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy (NLL) that corresponds to order-alpha_s accuracy. We combine the resummed result with a known fixed-order result at next-to-leading order (NLO) such that both resummed-logarithmic terms and non-logarithmic terms are included at the same order in alpha_s. This allowed us to provide reliable predictions at accuracies of order alpha_s ranging from relatively low energies near quarkonium mass to the collider energies of O(10^2) GeV. We also include the leading relativistic corrections resummed at leading-logarithmic accuracy. Our prediction at the Belle energy is comparable with fixed-order predictions in literatures while it shows a large deviation from a recent Belle's upper limit by about 4 sigma. Finally, we make predictions for the energies of future Z and Higgs factories.

Order $v^4$ corrections to Higgs boson decay into $J/ψ+ γ$

The process $H \to J/ψ+ γ$, where $H$ is the Higgs particle, provides a way to probe the size and the sign of the Higgs-charm coupling. In order to improve the theoretical control of the decay rate, we compute order $v^4$ corrections to the decay rate based on the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism. The perturbative calculation is carried out by using automated computer codes. We also resum logarithms of the ratio of the masses of the Higgs boson and the $J/ψ$ to all orders in the strong coupling constant $α_s$ to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. In our numerical result for the decay rate, we improve the theoretical uncertainty, while our central value is in agreement with previous studies within errors. We also present numerical results for $H \to Υ(nS) + γ$ for $n=1,2$, and 3, which turn out to be extremely sensitive to the Higgs bottom coupling.

Implementation of Maxwell's equations in the reconstruction of the magnetic field in the $g-2$ storage ring

We present a method for implementing the constraints that are implied by Maxwell's equations in fits to measurements of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring of the $g-2$ experiment. The method that we use makes use of toroidal-harmonic solutions of Laplace's equation. We point out that the fitting problem can be approximated well as a linear-algebra problem. We have devised an efficient algorithm for the linear-algebra problem that makes it possible to find a solution for $10^5$ data points and $10^4$ harmonics in less than an hour on a present-day desktop computer. We illustrate our method by applying it to some preliminary measurements of the magnetic field in the $g-2$ storage ring.

Inclusive decays of $η_c$ and $η_b$ at NNLO with large $n_f$ resummation

Based on the nonrelativistic QCD factorization theorem, we resum QCD corrections to the inclusive decay rate of $η_c$ and $η_b$ in the large-$n_f$ limit using bubble chain resummation. By employing dimensional regularization, we show explicitly the cancellation of the infrared renormalon ambiguity in the factorization formula at leading order in $v$ in the large-$n_f$ limit, where $v$ is the typical heavy quark velocity inside the meson. We also make predictions of the ratio of the inclusive decay rate to the decay rate into two photons. By comparing our results with a fixed-order calculation we conclude that resummation of QCD corrections is crucial in making an unambiguous prediction. We also find significant corrections beyond the large-$n_f$ limit for the decay of $η_c$, which may imply that QCD corrections need to be resummed beyond the large-$n_f$ limit to make an accurate prediction of the decay rate.

Review of quarkonium production: status and prospects

Production cross sections of heavy quarkonia are considered as useful tools to study various aspects of QCD. We have entered a new era of quarkonium production phenomenology, with the help of new measurements from the LHC giving access to more varieties of observables, and recent theoretical developments that provided us a better understanding of the short-distance process in which quarkonia are produced. With a more concrete understanding of perturbative corrections and a prolific collection of data, a satisfactory description of the quarkonium production mechanism might now be within reach. Unfortunately, the exact mechanism of quarkonium production still remains elusive. Even analyses based on the same formalism can lead to different descriptions of the production process and give contradicting predictions of processes involving heavy quarkonia. This implies that there are much more physics yet to be understood and much work yet to be done in quarkonium production phenomenology. In this paper, we review the current status of theoretical approaches and discuss possible strategies that may improve our understanding of heavy quarkonium production.

$Z$-boson decays to a vector quarkonium plus a photon

We compute the decay rates for the processes $Z\to V+γ$, where $Z$ is the $Z$ boson, $γ$ is the photon, and $V$ is one of the vector quarkonia $J/ψ$ or $Υ(nS)$, with $n=1$, $2$, or $3$. Our computations include corrections through relative orders $α_s$ and $v^2$ and resummations of logarithms of $m_Z^2/m_Q^2$, to all orders in $α_s$, at NLL accuracy. ($v$ is the velocity of the heavy quark $Q$ or the heavy antiquark $\bar{Q}$ in the quarkonium rest frame, and $m_Z$ and $m_Q$ are the masses of $Z$ and $Q$, respectively.) Our calculations are the first to include both the order-$α_s$ correction to the light-cone distributions amplitude and the resummation of logarithms of $m_Z^2/m_Q^2$ and are the first calculations for the $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ final states. The resummations of logarithms of $m_Z^2/m_Q^2$ that are associated with the order-$α_s$ and order-$v^2$ corrections are carried out by making use of the Abel-Padé method. We confirm the analytic result for the order-$v^2$ correction that was presented in a previous publication, and we correct the relative sign of the direct and indirect amplitudes and some choices of scales in that publication. Our branching fractions for $Z\to J/ψ+γ$ and $Z\to Υ(1S)+γ$ differ by $2.0\,σ$ and $-4.0\,σ$, respectively, from the branching fractions that are given in the most recent publication on this topic (in units of the uncertainties that are given in that publication). However, we argue that the uncertainties in the rates are underestimated in that publication.

Addendum: New approach to the resummation of logarithms in Higgs-boson decays to a vector quarkonium plus a photon [Phys. Rev. D 95, 054018 (2017)]

In this addendum to Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 95}, 054018 (2017) we recompute the rates for the decays of the Higgs boson to a vector quarkonium plus a photon, where the vector quarkonium is $J/ψ$, $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, or $Υ(3S)$. We correct an error in the Abel-Padé summation formula that was used to carry out the evolution of the quarkonium light-cone distribution amplitude in Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 95}, 054018 (2017). We also correct an error in the scale of quarkonium wave function at the origin in Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 95}, 054018 (2017) and introduce several additional refinements in the calculation.

New approach to the resummation of logarithms in Higgs-boson decays to a vector quarkonium plus a photon

We present a calculation of the rates for Higgs-boson decays to a vector heavy-quarkonium state plus a photon, where the heavy quarkonium states are the J/psi and the Upsilon(nS) states, with n=1, 2, or 3. The calculation is carried out in the light-cone formalism, combined with nonrelativistic QCD factorization, and is accurate at leading order in m_Q^2/m_H^2, where m_Q is the heavy-quark mass and m_H is the Higgs-boson mass. The calculation contains corrections through next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant alpha_s and the square of the heavy-quark velocity v, and includes a resummation of logarithms of m_H^2/m_Q^2 at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We have developed a new method, which makes use of Abel summation, accelerated through the use of Pade approximants, to deal with divergences in the resummed expressions for the quarkonium light-cone distribution amplitudes. This approach allows us to make definitive calculations of the resummation effects. Contributions from the order-alpha_s and order-v^2 corrections to the light-cone distribution amplitudes that we obtain with this new method differ substantially from the corresponding contributions that one obtains from a model light-cone distribution amplitude [M. Koenig and M. Neubert, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2015) 012]. Our results for the real parts of the direct-process amplitudes are considerably smaller than those from one earlier calculation [G. T. Bodwin, H. S. Chung, J.-H. Ee, J. Lee, and F. Petriello, Phys. Rev. D 90, 113010 (2014)], reducing the sensitivity to the Higgs-boson--heavy-quark couplings, and are somewhat smaller than those from another earlier calculation [M. Koenig and M. Neubert, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2015) 012]. However, our results for the standard-model Higgs-boson branching fractions are in good agreement with those in M. Koenig and M. Neubert, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2015) 012.

Higgs-Stoponium Mixing Near the Stop-Antistop Threshold

Supersymmetric extensions of the standard model contain additional heavy neutral Higgs bosons that are coupled to heavy scalar top quarks (stops). This system exhibits interesting field theoretic phenomena when the Higgs mass is close to the stop-antistop production threshold. Existing work in the literature has examined the digluon-to-diphoton cross section near threshold and has focused on enhancements in the cross section that might arise either from the perturbative contributions to the Higgs-to-digluon and Higgs-to-diphoton form factors or from mixing of the Higgs boson with stoponium states. Near threshold, enhancements in the relevant amplitudes that go as inverse powers of the stop-antistop relative velocity require resummations of perturbation theory and/or nonperturbative treatments. We present a complete formulation of threshold effects at leading order in the stop-antistop relative velocity in terms of nonrelativistic effective field theory. We give detailed numerical calculations for the case in which the stop-antistop Green's function is modeled with a Coulomb-Schrödinger Green's function. We find several general effects that do not appear in a purely perturbative treatment. Higgs-stop-antistop mixing effects displace physical masses from the threshold region, thereby rendering the perturbative threshold enhancements inoperative. In the case of large Higgs-stop-antistop couplings, the displacement of a physical state above threshold substantially increases its width, owing to its decay width to a stop-antistop pair, and greatly reduces its contribution to the cross section.

Fragmentation contributions to hadroproduction of prompt $J/ψ$, $χ_{cJ}$, and $ψ(2S)$ states

We compute fragmentation corrections to hadroproduction of the quarkonium states $J/ψ$, $χ_{cJ}$, and $ψ(2S)$ at leading power in $m_c^2/p_T^2$, where $m_c$ is the charm-quark mass and $p_T$ is the quarkonium transverse momentum. The computation is carried out in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD. We include corrections to the parton-production cross sections through next-to-leading order in the strong coupling $α_s$ and corrections to the fragmentation functions through second order in $α_s$. We also sum leading logarithms of $p_T^2/m_c^2$ to all orders in perturbation theory. We find that, when we combine these leading-power fragmentation corrections with fixed-order calculations through next-to-leading order in $α_s$, we are able to obtain good fits for $p_T\geq 10$ GeV to hadroproduction cross sections that were measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. Using values for the nonperturbative long-distance matrix elements that we extract from the cross-section fits, we make predictions for the polarizations of the quarkonium states. We obtain good agreement with measurements of the polarizations, with the exception of the CDF Run II measurement of the prompt $J/ψ$ polarization, for which the agreement is only fair. In the predictions for the prompt-$J/ψ$ cross sections and polarizations, we take into account feeddown from the $χ_{cJ}$ and $ψ(2S)$ states.

Fragmentation contributions to $J/ψ$ photoproduction at HERA

We compute leading-power fragmentation corrections to $J/ψ$ photoproduction at DESY HERA, making use of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach. Our calculations include parton production cross sections through order $α_s^3$, fragmentation functions though order $α_s^2$, and leading logarithms of the transverse momentum divided by the charm-quark mass to all orders in $α_s$. We find that the leading-power fragmentation corrections, beyond those that are included through next-to-leading order in $α_s$, are small relative to the fixed-order contributions through next-to-leading order in $α_s$. Consequently, an important discrepancy remains between the experimental measurements of the $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross section and predictions that make use of nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements that are extracted from the $J/ψ$ hadroproduction cross-section and polarization data.
