W-algebras of the Deligne-Cvitanovi\'{c} Exceptional series and the minimal 3d ${\mathcal N}=4$ SCFT

We propose a three-dimensional field theory construction that realizes the vertex algebras associated with the intermediate Lie algebras and the related $C_2$-cofinite minimal $W$-algebras of the Deligne-Cvitanovi\'c (DC) series as boundary algebras. The construction is based on the minimal three-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=4$ superconformal field theory coupled to a topological field theory. For a Neumann-type boundary condition compatible with the topological $A$-twist, the algebra of boundary local operators realizes the minimal $W$-algebra $W_{-h^\vee/6}(\mathfrak{g},f_{\text{min}})$. While this boundary condition is not deformable to the $B$-twist, we argue that a holomorphic-topological ($HT^B$) twist instead realizes the level-one affine algebras of the intermediate Lie algebras, providing a uniform three-dimensional origin for these vertex algebra structures.

Macdonald index from 3d TQFT

We propose a new fermionic sum formula for the Macdonald index of a class of Argyres-Douglas theories. The formula arises naturally from a three-dimensional topological field theory obtained via a twisted dimensional reduction of the 4d theory. Such a reduction often gives rise to a 3d ${\mathcal N}=2$ abelian Chern-Simons matter theory, which is expected to flow to an ${\mathcal N}=4$ superconformal fixed point. After performing a topological twist, we obtain a 3d TFT admitting boundary conditions that support the vertex operator algebra associated with the original 4d theory. In this framework, the Macdonald index appears as a half-index of the 3d gauge theory, with the Macdonald grading determined by a distinguished $U(1)_A$ symmetry in the infrared ${\mathcal N}=4$ superconformal algebra. We present a general procedure to identify this $U(1)_A$ symmetry and, whenever possible, show that it reproduces the refined character of the associated vertex operator algebra, thereby recovering the Macdonald index. Our construction also gives a hint towards the IR formula for the Macdonald index in terms of 4d BPS particles on the Coulomb branch.

Path Integral Derivations Of K-Theoretic Donaldson Invariants

We consider 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory on $X\times S^1$, with $X$ a closed smooth four-manifold. A partial topological twisting along $X$ renders the theory formally independent of the metric on $X$. The theory depends on the spin structure and the circumference $R$ of $S^1$. The coefficients of the $R$-expansion of the partition function are Witten indices, which are identified with $L^2$-indices of Dirac operators on moduli spaces of instantons. The partition function encodes BPS indices for instanton particles on a spatial manifold $X$, and these indices are special cases of K-theoretic Donaldson invariants. When the 't Hooft flux of the gauge theory is nonzero and $X$ is not spin, the 5d theory can be anomalous, but this anomaly can be canceled by coupling to a line bundle with connection for the global $U(1)$ ``instanton number symmetry''. For $b_2^+(X)>0$ we can derive the partition function from integration over the Coulomb branch of the effective 4d low-energy theory. When $X$ is toric we can also use equivariant localization with respect to the $\mathbb{C}^* \times \mathbb{C}^*$ symmetry. The two methods lead to the same results for the wall-crossing formula. We also determine path integrals for four-manifolds with $b_2^+(X)>1$. Our results agree with those for algebraic surfaces by G\"ottsche, Kool, Nakajima, Yoshioka, and Williams, but apply to a larger class of manifolds. When the circumference of the circle is tuned to special values, the path integral is associated with the 5d superconformal $E_1$ theory. Topological invariants in this case involve generalizations of Seiberg-Witten invariants.

From BPS Spectra of Argyres-Douglas Theories to Families of 3d TFTs

Vertex operator algebras (VOAs) arise in protected subsectors of supersymmetric quantum field theories, notably in 4d ${\mathcal N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFT) via the Schur sector and in twisted 3d ${\mathcal N}=4$ theories via boundary algebras. These constructions are connected through twisted circle compactifications, which can be best understood from the dynamics of BPS particles in the Coulomb branch of the 4d SCFT. This data is encoded in an operator $\hat\Phi$ acting on the Hilbert space of an auxiliary quantum mechanics of BPS particles, whose trace yields the partition functions of a 3d topological field theory (TFT) bounding the VOA. We generalize this trace formula by considering higher powers of $\hat\Phi$, leading to a finite family of VOAs associated with a given 4d SCFT. Applying this framework to Argyres-Douglas theories labeled by $(A_1, G)$, where $G$ is an ADE-type group of rank up to 8, we extract the modular data of the family of boundary VOAs via TFT partition function calculations on Seifert manifolds. Our results suggest that the modular data obtained from different powers of $\hat\Phi$ are related by Galois transformations.

A Family of Vertex Algebras from Argyres-Douglas Theory

We find that multiple vertex algebras can arise from a single 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory (SCFT). The connection is given by the BPS monodromy operator $M$, which is a wall-crossing invariant quantity that captures the BPS spectrum on the Coulomb branch. For a class of low-rank Argyres-Douglas theories, we find that the trace of the multiple powers of the monodromy operator $\mathrm{Tr} M^N$ yield modular functions that can be identified with the vacuum characters of certain vertex algebra for each $N$. In particular, we realize unitary VOAs of the Deligne-Cvitanovi\'c exceptional series type $(A_2)_1$, $(G_2)_1$, $(D_4)_1$, $(F_4)_1$, $(E_6)_1$ from Argyres-Douglas theories. We also find the modular invariant characters of the `intermediate vertex algebras' $(E_{7\frac{1}{2}})_1$ and $(X_1)_1$. Our analysis allows us to construct 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories that flow to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs in the IR, whose specialized half-index can be identified with these modular invariant characters.

Three Dimensional Topological Field Theories and Nahm Sum Formulas

It is known that a large class of characters of 2d conformal field theories (CFTs) can be written in the form of a Nahm sum. In \cite{Zagier:2007knq}, D. Zagier identified a list of Nahm sum expressions that are modular functions under a congruence subgroup of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and can be thought of as candidates for characters of rational CFTs. Motivated by the observation that the same formulas appear as the half-indices of certain 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories, we perform a general search over low-rank 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian Chern-Simons matter theories which either flow to unitary TFTs or $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-zero SCFTs in the infrared. These are exceptional classes of 3d theories, which are expected to support rational and $C_2$-cofinite chiral algebras on their boundary. We compare and contrast our results with Zagier's and comment on a possible generalization of Nahm's conjecture.

3D TFTs from 4d ${\cal N}=2$ BPS Particles

We propose a general strategy to build three-dimensional gauge theories with four supercharges which enjoy a supersymmetry enhancement in the IR. The resulting IR SCFTs admit topological twists with particularly nice properties, as well as boundary rational chiral algebras such that the associated Modular Tensor Categories are controlled by the topological twist. The theories arise from a twisted circle compactification of four-dimensional theories of Argyres-Douglas type. We develop a novel algorithm to compute or manipulate protected quantities associated to these theories, such as ellipsoid partition functions and superconformal indices and half-indices.

Mirror Symmetry and Level-rank Duality for 3d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Rank 0 SCFTs

We introduce a family of 3d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ superconformal field theories that have zero-dimensional Coulomb and Higgs branches and propose that the rational vertex operator algebras $W^{\text{min}}_{k - \scriptstyle{\frac{1}{2}}}(\mathfrak{sp}_{2N})$ and $L_{k}(\mathfrak{osp}_{1|2N})$ model the modular tensor categories of line operators in their topological $A$ and $B$ twists, respectively. Our analysis indicates that the action of 3d mirror symmetry on this family of theories is related to a novel level-rank duality and leads to several conjectural $q$-series identities of independent interest.

Distilling Privileged Information for Dubins Traveling Salesman Problems with Neighborhoods

This paper presents a novel learning approach for Dubins Traveling Salesman Problems(DTSP) with Neighborhood (DTSPN) to quickly produce a tour of a non-holonomic vehicle passing through neighborhoods of given task points. The method involves two learning phases: initially, a model-free reinforcement learning approach leverages privileged information to distill knowledge from expert trajectories generated by the LinKernighan heuristic (LKH) algorithm. Subsequently, a supervised learning phase trains an adaptation network to solve problems independently of privileged information. Before the first learning phase, a parameter initialization technique using the demonstration data was also devised to enhance training efficiency. The proposed learning method produces a solution about 50 times faster than LKH and substantially outperforms other imitation learning and RL with demonstration schemes, most of which fail to sense all the task points.

Boundary vertex algebras for 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs

We initiate the study of boundary Vertex Operator Algebras (VOAs) of topologically twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs. This is a recently introduced class of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs that by definition have zero-dimensional Higgs and Coulomb branches. We briefly explain why it is reasonable to obtain rational VOAs at the boundary of their topological twists. When a rank-0 SCFT is realized as the IR fixed point of a $\mathcal{N}=2$ Lagrangian theory, we propose a technique for the explicit construction of its topological twists and boundary VOAs based on deformations of the holomorphic-topological twist of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ microscopic description. We apply this technique to the $B$ twist of a newly discovered family of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs ${\mathcal T}_r$ and argue that they admit the simple affine VOAs $L_r(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2))$ at their boundary. In the simplest case, this leads to a novel level-rank duality between $L_1(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2))$ and the minimal model $M(2,5)$. As an aside, we present a TQFT obtained by twisting a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ QFT that admits the $M(3,4)$ minimal model as a boundary VOA and briefly comment on the classical freeness of VOAs at the boundary of 3d TQFTs.

Three-Dimensional Topological Field Theories and Non-Unitary Minimal Models

We find an intriguing relation between a class of 3-dimensional non-unitary topological field theories (TFTs) and Virasoro minimal models $M(2,2r+3)$ with $r \geq 1$. The TFTs are constructed by topologically twisting $3d$ ${\mathcal N}=4$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of rank-0, i.e. having zero-dimensional Coulomb and Higgs branches. We present ultraviolet (UV) field theory descriptions of the SCFTs with manifest ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry, which we argue is enhanced to ${\mathcal N}=4$ in the infrared. From the UV description, we compute various partition functions of the TFTs and reproduce some basic properties of the minimal models, such as their characters and modular matrices. We expect more general correspondence between topologically twisted $3d$ ${\mathcal N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs and $2d$ non-unitary rational conformal field theories.

The Twisted Index and Topological Saddles

The twisted index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on $S^1 \times Σ$ has an algebro-geometric interpretation as the Witten index of an effective supersymmetric quantum mechanics. In this paper, we consider the contributions to the supersymmetric quantum mechanics from topological saddle points in supersymmetric localisation of abelian gauge theories. Topological saddles are configurations where the matter fields vanish and the gauge symmetry is unbroken, which exist for non-vanishing effective Chern-Simons levels. We compute the contributions to the twisted index from both topological and vortex-like saddles points and show that their combination recovers the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue prescription for the twisted index and its wall-crossing.

The 3d Twisted Index and Wall-Crossing

We study the twisted index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on $S^1 \times Σ$ in the presence of a real FI parameter deformation. This parameter induces a 1d FI parameter for the effective supersymmetric quantum mechanics on $S^1$. Using supersymmetric localisation, the twisted index can be expressed as a contour integral. We show that the contour prescription is modified in the presence of the 1d FI parameter, leading to wall-crossing phenomena for the twisted index. In particular, we derive a general wall-crossing formula for abelian gauge theories. We also examine the origin of wall-crossing as change of stability condition in the algebro-geometric interpretation of the twisted index. These ideas are illustrated for abelian theories with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry and in a non-abelian example that reproduces wall-crossing phenomena associated to moduli spaces of stable pairs.

Supersymmetric Ground States of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Gauge Theories on a Riemann Surface

This paper studies supersymmetric ground states of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories on a Riemann surface of genus $g$. There are two distinct spaces of supersymmetric ground states arising from the $A$ and $B$ type twists on the Riemann surface, which lead to effective supersymmetric quantum mechanics with four supercharges and supermultiplets of type $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ respectively. We compute the space of supersymmetric ground states in each case, graded by flavour and R-symmetries and in different chambers for real mass and FI parameters, for a large class of supersymmetric gauge theories. The results are formulated geometrically in terms of the Higgs branch geometry. We perform extensive checks of compatibility with the twisted index and mirror symmetry.

Higher-Form Symmetries, Bethe Vacua, and the 3d-3d Correspondence

By incorporating higher-form symmetries, we propose a refined definition of the theories obtained by compactification of the 6d $(2,0)$ theory on a three-manifold $M_3$. This generalization is applicable to both the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric reductions. An observable that is sensitive to the higher-form symmetries is the Witten index, which can be computed by counting solutions to a set of Bethe equations that are determined by $M_3$. This is carried out in detail for $M_3$ a Seifert manifold, where we compute a refined version of the Witten index. In the context of the 3d-3d correspondence, we complement this analysis in the dual topological theory, and determine the refined counting of flat connections on $M_3$, which matches the Witten index computation that takes the higher-form symmetries into account.

Three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and partition functions on Seifert manifolds: A review

We give a pedagogical introduction to the study of supersymmetric partition functions of 3D $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories (with an $R$-symmetry) on half-BPS closed three-manifolds---including $S^3$, $S^2 \times S^1$, and any Seifert three-manifold. Three-dimensional gauge theories can flow to non-trivial fixed points in the infrared. In the presence of 3D $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ supersymmetry, many exact results are known about the strongly-coupled infrared, due in good part to powerful localization techniques. We review some of these techniques and emphasize some more recent developments, which provide a simple and comprehensive formalism for the exact computation of half-BPS observables on closed three-manifolds (partition functions and correlation functions of line operators). Along the way, we also review simple examples of 3D infrared dualities. The computation of supersymmetric partition functions provides exceedingly precise tests of these dualities.

Twisted Indices of 3d ${\mathcal N} = 4$ Gauge Theories and Enumerative Geometry of Quasi-Maps

We explore the geometric interpretation of the twisted index of 3d ${\mathcal N} =4$ gauge theories on $S^1\times Σ$ where $Σ$ is a closed Riemann surface. We focus on a rich class of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories that have isolated vacua under generic mass and FI parameter deformations. We show that the path integral localises to a moduli space of generalised vortex equations on $Σ$, which can be understood algebraically as quasi-maps to the Higgs branch. We show that the twisted index reproduces the virtual Euler characteristic of the moduli spaces of twisted quasi-maps and demonstrate that this agrees with the contour integral representation introduced in previous work. Finally, we investigate 3d ${\mathcal N} = 4$ mirror symmetry in this context, which implies an equality of enumerative invariants associated to mirror pairs of Higgs branches under the exchange of equivariant and degree counting parameters.

't Hooft anomalies and the holomorphy of supersymmetric partition functions

We study the dependence of supersymmetric partition functions on continuous parameters for the flavor symmetry group, $G_F$, for 2d $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ and 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories. In any diffeomorphism-invariant scheme and in the presence of $G_F$ 't Hooft anomalies, the supersymmetric Ward identities imply that the partition function has a non-holomorphic dependence on the flavor parameters. We show this explicitly for the 2d torus partition function, $Z_{T^2}$, and for a large class of 4d partition functions on half-BPS four-manifolds, $Z_{\mathcal{M}_4}$---in particular, for $\mathcal{M}_4=S^3 \times S^1$ and $\mathcal{M}_4=Σ_g \times T^2$. We propose a new expression for $Z_{\mathcal{M}_{d-1} \times S^1}$, which differs from earlier holomorphic results by the introduction of a non-holomorphic `Casimir' pre-factor. The latter is fixed by studying the `high temperature' limit of the partition function. Our proposal agrees with the supersymmetric Ward identities, and with explicit calculations of the absolute value of the partition function using a gauge-invariant zeta-function regularization.
