Is the magnetic field making the inner crust of neutron stars more heterogeneous?

We study the effect of strong magnetic fields, of the order of $10^{15}-10^{17}$ G, on the extension of the crust of magnetized neutron stars. The dynamical instability region of neutron-proton-electron ($npe$) matter at subsaturation densities and the mode with the largest growth rate are determined within a relativistic mean field model. It is shown that a strong magnetic field has a large effect on the instability region, defining the crust-core transition as a wide density range.

Neutron stars: from the inner crust to the core with the (Extended) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

Nucleonic matter is described within a su(2) extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Several parametrizations with different nuclear matter saturation properties are proposed. At subsaturation, nuclear pasta phases are calculated within two methods: the coexistence-phases approximation and the compressible liquid drop model, with the surface tension coefficient determined using a geometrical approach at zero temperature. An unified equation of state of stellar matter for the inner crust, with the nuclear pasta phases, and the core is calculated. The mass and radius of neutron stars within this framework are obtained for several families of hadronic and hybrid stars. The quark phase of hybrid stars is described within the su(3) NJL model including a vector term. Stellar macroscopic properties are in accordance with some of the recent results in the literature.

The Vlasov formalism for extended relativistic mean field models: the crust-core transition and the stellar matter equation of state

The Vlasov formalism is extended to relativistic mean-field hadron models with non-linear terms up to fourth order and applied to the calculation of the crust-core transition density. The effect of the nonlinear $ωρ$ and $σρ$ coupling terms on the crust-core transition density and pressure, and on the macroscopic properties of some families of hadronic stars is investigated. For that purpose, six families of relativistic mean field models are considered. Within each family, the members differ in the symmetry energy behavior. For all the models, the dynamical spinodals are calculated, and the crust-core transition density and pressure, and the neutron star mass-radius relations are obtained. The effect on the star radius of the inclusion of a pasta calculation in the inner crust is discussed. The set of six models that best satisfy terrestrial and observational constraints predicts a radius of 13.6$\pm$0.3 km and a crust thickness of $1.36\pm 0.06$km for a 1.4 $M_\odot$ star.

Light clusters, pasta phases and phase transitions in core-collapse supernova matter

The pasta phase in core-collapse supernova matter (finite temperatures and fixed proton fractions) is studied within relativistic mean field models. Three different calculations are used for comparison, the Thomas-Fermi (TF), the Coexisting Phases (CP) and the Compressible Liquid Drop (CLD) approximations. The effects of including light clusters in nuclear matter and the densities at which the transitions between pasta configurations and to uniform matter occur are also investigated. The free energy, pressure, entropy and chemical potentials in the range of particle number densities and temperatures expected to cover the pasta region are calculated. Finally, a comparison with a finite temperature Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculation is drawn.

Phase transitions in Core-Collapse Supernova Matter at sub-saturation densities

We perform a three-dimensional, finite temperature Skyrme-Hartree-Fock study of inhomogeneous nuclear matter to determine the critical density and temperature for the phase transition between the pasta phase and homogeneous matter and its properties. We employ four different parametrizations of the Skyrme nuclear energy-density functional, SkM$^*$, SLy4, NRAPR and SQMC700, which span a range of saturation-density symmetry energy behaviours constrained by a variety of nuclear experimental probes. For each of these interactions we calculate free energy, pressure, entropy and chemical potentials in the range of particle number densities where the nuclear pasta phases are expected to exist, 0.02 - 0.12 fm$^{-3}$, temperatures 2 - 8 MeV and a proton fraction of 0.3. We find unambiguous evidence for a first-order phase transition to uniform matter, unsoftened by the presence of the pasta phases. No conclusive signs of first-order phase transition between the pasta phases is observed, and it is argued that the thermodynamic quantities vary continuously right up to the first-order phase transition to uniform matter. We compare our results with thermodynamic spinodals calculated using the same Skyrme parameterizations, finding that the effect of short-range Coulomb correlations and quantum shell effects included in our model leads to the pasta phases existing at densities up to 0.1 fm$^{-3}$ above the spinodal boundaries, thus increasing the transition density to uniform matter by the same amount. The transition density is otherwise shown to be insensitive to the symmetry energy at saturation density within the range constrained by the concordance of a variety of experimental constraints, and can be taken to be a well-determined quantity.

Equation of state and thickness of the inner crust of neutron stars

The cell structure of $β$-stable clusters in the inner crust of cold and warm neutron stars is studied within the Thomas-Fermi approach using relativistic mean field nuclear models. The relative size of the inner crust and the pasta phase of neutron stars is calculated, and the effect of the symmetry energy slope parameter, $L$, on the profile of the neutron star crust is discussed. It is shown that while the size of the total crust is mainly determined by the incompressibility modulus, the relative size of the inner crust depends on $L$. It is found that the inner crust represents a larger fraction of the total crust for smaller values of $L$. Finally, it is shown that at finite temperature the pasta phase in $β$-equilibrium matter essentially melts above $5-6$ MeV, and that the onset density of the rodlike and slablike structures does not depend on the temperature.

Dynamical properties of nuclear and stellar matter and the symmetry energy

The effects of density dependence of the symmetry energy on the collective modes and dynamical instabilities of cold and warm nuclear and stellar matter are studied in the framework of relativistic mean-field hadron models. The existence of the collective isovector and possibly an isoscalar collective mode above saturation density is discussed. It is shown that soft equations of state do not allow for a high density isoscalar collective mode, however, if the symmetry energy is hard enough an isovector mode will not disappear at high densities. The crust-core transition density and pressure are obtained as a function of temperature for $β$-equilibrium matter with and without neutrino trapping. An estimation of the size of the clusters formed in the non-homogeneous phase as well as the corresponding growth rates and distillation effect is made. It is shown that cluster sizes increase with temperature, that the distillation effect close to the inner edge of the crust-core transition is very sensitive to the symmetry energy, and that, within a dynamical instability calculation, the pasta phase exists in warm compact stars up to 10 - 12 MeV.

Dynamical instabilities of warm $npe^-$ matter: the $δ$ meson effects

The effects of $δ$ mesons on the dynamical instabilities of cold and warm nuclear and stellar matter at subsaturation densities are studied in the framework of relativistic mean-field hadron models (NL3, NL$ρ$ and NL$ρδ$) with the inclusion of the electromagnetic field. The distillation effect and the spinodals for all the models considered are discussed. The crust-core transition density and pressure are obtained as a function of temperature for $β$-equilibrium matter with and without neutrino trapping. An estimation of the size of the clusters formed in the non-homogeneous phase is made. It is shown that cluster sizes increase with temperature. The effects of the $δ$-meson on the instability region are larger for low temperatures, very asymmetric matter and densities close to the spinodal surface. It increases the distillation effect above $\sim 0.4ρ_0$ and has the opposite effect below that density.
