Energy shift of collective modes in spin-imbalanced graphene on SiO$_2$ from spin-sensitive linear response theory

The growing precision of optical and scattering experiments necessitates a better understanding of the influence of damping onto the collective mode of sheet electrons. As spin-polarized systems are of particular interest for spintronic applications, we here report spin-sensitive linear response functions of graphene, which give access to charge- and spin-density related excitations. We further calculate the reflectivity of graphene on an SiO 2 surface, a setup used in s-wave scanning near field microscopy. Increasing the partial spin-polarization of the graphene charge carriers leads to a significant broadening and shift of the plasmon mode, due to single-particle interband transitions of the minority spin carriers. We also predict an antiresonance in the longitudinal magnetic response function, similar to that of semiconductor heterostructures.

Dynamic correlations in the highly dilute 2D electron liquid: loss function, critical wave vector and analytic plasmon dispersion

Correlations, highly important in low--dimensional systems, are known to decrease the plasmon dispersion of two-dimensional electron liquids. Here we calculate the plasmon properties, applying the 'Dynamic Many-Body Theory', accounting for correlated two-particle--two-hole fluctuations. These dynamic correlations are found to significantly lower the plasmon's energy. For the data obtained numerically, we provide an analytic expression that is valid across a wide range both of densities and of wave vectors. Finally, we demonstrate how this can be invoked in determining the actual electron densities from measurements on an AlGaAs quantum well.

Phenomenological plasmon broadening and relation to the dispersion

Pragmatic ways of including lifetime broadening of collective modes in the electron liquid are critically compared. Special focus lies on the impact of the damping parameter onto the dispersion. It is quantitatively exemplified for the two-dimensional case, for both, the charge (`sheet'-)plasmon and the spin-density plasmon. The predicted deviations fall within the resolution limits of advanced techniques.

Excitations in a spin-polarized tow-dimensional electron gas

A remarkably long-lived spin plasmon may exist in two-dimensional electron liquids with imbalanced spin up and spin down population. Predictions for this interesting mode by Agarwal et al. [Phys. Rev. B 90, 155409 (2014)] are based on the random phase approximation. We here show how to account for spin dependent correlations from known ground state pair correlation functions and study the consequences on the various spin dependent longitudinal response functions. The spin plasmon dispersion relation and its critical wave vector for Landau damping by minority spins turn out to be significantly lowered. We further demonstrate that spin dependent effective interactions imply a rich structure in the excitation spectrum of the partially spin-polarized system. Most notably, we find a "magnetic antiresonance", where the imaginary part of both, the spin-spin as well as the density-spin response function vanish. The resulting minimum in the double-differential cross section is awaiting experimental confirmation.

Pair Excitations and Vertex Corrections in Fermi Fluids

Based on an equations--of--motion approach for time--dependent pair correlations in strongly interacting Fermi liquids, we have developed a theory for describing the excitation spectrum of these systems. Compared to the known ``correlated'' random--phase approximation (CRPA), our approach has the following properties: i) The CRPA is reproduced when pair fluctuations are neglected. ii) The first two energy--weighted sumrules are fulfilled implying a correct static structure. iii) No ad--hoc assumptions for the effective mass are needed to reproduce the experimental dispersion of the roton in 3He. iv) The density response function displays a novel form, arising from vertex corrections in the proper polarisation. Our theory is presented here with special emphasis on this latter point. We have also extended the approach to the single particle self-energy and included pair fluctuations in the same way. The theory provides a diagrammatic superset of the familiar GW approximation. It aims at a consistent calculation of single particle excitations with an accuracy that has previously only been achieved for impurities in Bose liquids.
