Continuity of convolution of test functions on Lie groups

If G is a Lie group, let D(G) be the space of compactly supported smooth functions on G. Consider the bilinear map B : D(G) x D(G) -> D(G), (f,g) |-> f*g which takes a pair of test functions to their convolution. We show that B is continuous if and only if G is sigma-compact. More generally, let r,s,t be non-negative integers (or infinity) with t <= r+s. Let E_1, E_2 be locally convex spaces and b : E_1 x E_2 -> F be a continuous bilinear map to a complete locally convex space F. The main result is a characterization of those (G,r,s,t,b) for which the convolution map C^r_c(G,E_1) x C^s_c(G,E_2) -> C^t_c(G,F) associated with b is continuous. Convolution of compactly supported continuous functions on a locally compact group is also discussed, as well as convolution of compactly supported L^1-functions and convolution of compactly supported Radon measures.

Upper bounds for continuous seminorms and special properties of bilinear maps

If E is a locally convex topological vector space, let P(E) be the pre-ordered set of all continuous seminorms on E. We study, on the one hand, for g an infinite cardinal those locally convex spaces E which have the g-neighbourhood property in the sense of E. Jorda, i.e., spaces in which all sets M of continuous seminorms of cardinality up to g have an upper bound in P(E). On the other hand, we study bilinear maps b from a product of locally convex spaces E_1 and E_2 to a locally convex space F, which admit "product estimates" in the sense that for all p_{i,j} in P(F), i,j=1,2,..., there exist p_i in P(E_1) and q_j in P(E_2) such that p_{i,j}(b(x,y)) <= p_i(x)q_j(y) for all x in E_1, y in E_2. The relations between these concepts are explored, and examples given. The main applications concern spaces C^r_c(M,E)$ of vector-valued test functions on manifolds.

When unit groups of continuous inverse algebras are regular Lie groups

It is a basic fact in infinite-dimensional Lie theory that the unit group G(A) of a continuous inverse algebra A is a Lie group. We describe criteria ensuring that the Lie group G(A) is regular in Milnor's sense. Notably, G(A) is regular if A is Mackey-complete and locally m-convex.

Continuity of bilinear maps on direct sums of topological vector spaces

We prove a criterion for continuity of bilinear maps on countable direct sums of topological vector spaces. As a first application, we get a new proof for the fact (due to Hirai et al. 2001) that the map taking a pair of test functions on R^n to their convolution is continuous. The criterion also allows an open problem by K.-H. Neeb to be solved: If E is a locally convex space, regard the tensor algebra T(E) as the locally convex direct sum of the projective tensor powers T^j(E) of E. We show that T(E) is a topological algebra if and only if every sequence of continuous seminorms on E has an upper bound. In particular, if E is metrizable, then T(E) is a topological algebra if and only if E is normable. Also, T(E) is a topological algebra whenever E is a DFS-space, or a hemicompact k-space.

Topological algebras of rapidly decreasing matrices and generalizations

It is a well-known fact in K-theory that the rapidly decreasing matrices of countable size form an associative topological algebra whose set of quasi-invertible elements is open, and such that the quasi-inversion map is continuous. We generalize these conclusions to further algebras of weighted matrices with entries in a Banach algebra.

A note concerning a tidying procedure and contraction groups in non-metrizable, totally disconnected groups

In a 2004 article, Udo Baumgartner and George Willis used ideas from the structure theory of totally disconnected, locally compact groups to achieve a better understanding of the contraction group U_f associated with an automorphism f of such a group G, assuming that G is metrizable. (Recall that U_f consists of all group elements x such that f^n(x) tends to the identity element as n tends to infinity). Recently, Wojciech Jaworski showed that the main technical tool of the latter article remains valid in the non-metrizable case. He asserted without proof that, therefore, all results from that article remain valid. However, metrizability enters the arguments at a second point. In this note, we resolve this difficulty, by providing an affirmative answer to a question posed by Willis in 2004.

Homotopy groups of ascending unions of infinite-dimensional manifolds

Let M be a topological manifold modelled on topological vector spaces, which is the union of an ascending sequence of such manifolds M_n. We formulate a mild condition ensuring that the k-th homotopy group of M is the direct limit of the k-th homotopy groups of the steps M_n, for each non-negative integer k. This result is useful for Lie theory, because many important examples of infinite-dimensional Lie groups G can be expressed as ascending unions of finite- or infinite-dimensional Lie groups (whose homotopy groups may be easier to access). Information on the k-th homotopy groups of G, for k=0, k=1 and k=2, is needed to understand the Lie group extensions of G with abelian kernels. The above conclusion remains valid if the union of the steps M_n is merely dense in M (under suitable hypotheses). Also, ascending unions can be replaced by (possibly uncountable) directed unions.

Invariant manifolds for analytic dynamical systems over ultrametric fields

We give an exposition of the theory of invariant manifolds around a fixed point, in the case of time-discrete, analytic dynamical systems over a complete ultrametric field K. Typically, we consider an analytic manifold M modelled on an ultrametric Banach space over K, an analytic self-map f of M, and a fixed point p of f. Under suitable conditions on the tangent map of f at p, we construct a centre-stable manifold, a centre manifold, respectively, an r-stable manifold around p, for a given positive real number r not exceeding 1. The invariant manifolds are useful in the theory of Lie groups over local fields, where they allow results to be extended to the case of positive characteristic which previously were only available in characteristic zero (i.e., for p-adic Lie groups).

Final group topologies, Kac-Moody groups and Pontryagin duality

We study final group topologies and their relations to compactness properties. In particular, we are interested in situations where a colimit or direct limit is locally compact, a k_ω-space, or locally k_ω. As a first application, we show that unitary forms of complex Kac-Moody groups can be described as the colimit of an amalgam of subgroups (in the category of Hausdorff topological groups, and the category of k_ω-groups). Our second application concerns Pontryagin duality theory for the classes of almost metrizable topological abelian groups, resp., locally k_ωtopological abelian groups, which are dual to each other. In particular, we explore the relations between countable projective limits of almost metrizable abelian groups and countable direct limits of locally k_ωabelian groups.

Direct limits of infinite-dimensional Lie groups

Many infinite-dimensional Lie groups of interest can be expressed as a union of an ascending sequence of (finite- or infinite-dimensional) Lie groups. In this survey article, we compile general results concerning such ascending unions, describe the main classes of examples, and explain what the general theory tells us about these. In particular, we discuss: (1) Direct limit properties of ascending unions of Lie groups in the relevant categories; (2) Regularity in Milnor's sense; (3) Homotopy groups of direct limit groups and of Lie groups containing a dense union of Lie groups; (4) Subgroups of direct limit groups; (5) Constructions of Lie group structures on ascending unions of Lie groups.

Solutions to open problems in Neeb's recent survey on infinite-dimensional Lie groups

We solve three open problems concerning infinite-dimensional Lie groups posed in a recent survey article by K.-H. Neeb: (1) There exists a subgroup of some infinite-dimensional Lie group G which does not admit an initial Lie subgroup structure; (2) The pathology cannot occur if G is a direct limit of an ascending sequence of finite-dimensional Lie groups; (3) Every such direct limit group is a ``topological group with Lie algebra'' in the sense of Hofmann and Morris. Moreover, we prove a version of Borel's Theorem announced in the survey, ensuring the existence of compactly supported smooth diffeomorphisms with given Taylor series around a fixed point p (provided the tangent map at p has positive determinant).

General Dirichlet series, arithmetic convolution equations and Laplace transforms

In an earlier paper, we studied solutions g to convolution equations of the form a_d*g^{*d}+a_{d-1}*g^{*(d-1)}+...+a_1*g+a_0=0, where a_0, ..., a_d are given arithmetic functions associated with Dirichlet series which converge on some right half plane, and also g is required to be such a function. In this article, we extend our previous results to multidimensional general Dirichlet series of the form \sum_{x\in X} f(x) e^{-sx} (s in C^k), where X is an additive subsemigroup of [0,\infty)^k. If X is discrete and a certain solvability criterion is satisfied, we determine solutions by an elementary recursive approach, adapting an idea of Feckan. The solution of the general case leads us to a more comprehensive question: Let X be an additive subsemigroup of a pointed, closed convex cone C in R^k. Can we find a complex Radon measure on X whose Laplace transform satisfies a given polynomial equation whose coefficients are Laplace transforms of such measures?

Simplified Proofs for the Pro-Lie Group Theorem and the One-Parameter Subgroup Lifting Lemma

This note is devoted to the theory of projective limits of finite-dimensional Lie groups, as developed in the recent monograph ``The Lie Theory of Connected Pro-Lie Groups'' by K.H. Hofmann and S.A. Morris. We replace the original, highly non-trivial proof of the One-Parameter Subgroup Lifting Lemma given in the monograph by a shorter and more elementary argument. Furthermore, we shorten (and correct) the proof of the so-called Pro-Lie Group Theorem, which asserts that pro-Lie groups and projective limits of Lie groups coincide.

Instructive examples of smooth, complex differentiable and complex analytic mappings into locally convex spaces

For each positive integer k, we describe a map f from the complex plane to a suitable non-complete complex locally convex space such that f is k times continuously complex differentiable but not k+1 times, and hence not complex analytic. We also describe a complex analytic map from l^1 to a suitable complete complex locally convex space which is unbounded on each non-empty open subset of l^1. Furthermore, we present a smooth map from the real line to a non-complete locally convex space which is not real analytic although it is given locally by its Taylor series around each point. As a byproduct, we find that free locally convex spaces over subsets of the complex plane with non-empty interior are not Mackey complete.

Contractible Lie groups over local fields

Let G be a Lie group over a local field of positive characteristic which admits a contractive automorphism f (i.e., the forward iterates f^n(x) of each group element x converge to the neutral element 1). We show that then G is a torsion group of finite exponent and nilpotent. We also obtain results concerning the interplay between contractive automorphisms of Lie groups over local fields, contractive automorphisms of their Lie algebras, and positive gradations thereon. Some of the results even extend to Lie groups over arbitrary complete ultrametric fields.

Finite order differentiability properties, fixed points and implicit functions over valued fields

We prove an implicit function theorem for C^k-maps from arbitrary topological vector spaces over valued fields to Banach spaces (for k at least 2). As a tool, we show the C^k-dependence of fixed points on parameters for suitable families of contractions of a Banach space. Similar results are obtained for k times strictly differentiable maps, and for k times Lipschitz differentiable maps. In the real case, our results subsume an implicit function theorem for Keller C^k_c-maps from arbitrary topological vector spaces to Banach spaces.

Implicit functions from topological vector spaces to Fréchet spaces in the presence of metric estimates

We prove an implicit function theorem for Keller C^k_c-maps from arbitrary real or complex topological vector spaces to Frechet spaces, imposing only a certain metric estimate on the partial differentials. As a tool, we show the C^k-dependence of fixed points on parameters for suitable families of contractions of a Frechet space. The investigations were stimulated by a recent metric approach to differentiability in Frechet spaces by Olaf Mueller. Our results also subsume generalizations of Mueller's Inverse Function Theorem for mappings between Frechet spaces. As an application, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to suitable ordinary differential equations in Frechet spaces, and study their dependence on initial conditions and parameters.

Ultrametric and non-locally convex analogues of the general curve lemma of convenient differential calculus

The General Curve Lemma is a tool of Infinite-Dimensional Analysis, which enables refined studies of differentiability properties of mappings between real locally convex spaces. In this article, we generalize the General Curve Lemma in two ways: First, we remove the condition of local convexity in the real case. Second, we adapt the lemma to the case of curves in topological vector spaces over ultrametric fields.
