Energy-dependent scaling of incoherent spectral weight and the origin of the waterfalls in high-Tc cuprates

The exotic physics in condensed matter systems, such as high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates, is due to the properties of the elementary excitations and their interactions. The dispersion of the electronic states revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) provides a chance to understand these excitations. Recently, a "high energy anomaly" or "waterfall-like" feature in cuprates' dispersion has been reported and studied theoretically. Most of the current views argue that it is the result of some many-body effect at a specific high energy scale (e.g. ~ 0.3eV), though there are other arguments that this is an artificial effect. Here, we report a systematic ARPES study on the "high energy anomaly" in Bi2212 samples over multiple Brillouin zones and with a large variety of ARPES matrix elements. We find that the incoherent weight of the electron spectral function at high binding energy is intimately linked to the energy of the dispersive coherent weight through an unexpected but simple relationship with no special energy scales. This behavior in concert with strong k-dependent matrix element effects gives rise to the heavily studied "waterfall" behavior.

Interplay of electronic correlations and lattice instabilities in BaVS3

The quasi-one-dimensional metallic system BaVS3 with a metal-insulator transition at T_MI=70 K shows large changes of the optical phonon spectrum, a central peak, and an electronic Raman scattering continuum that evolve in a three-step process. Motivated by the observation of a strongly fluctuating precursor state at high temperatures and orbital ordering and a charge gap at low temperatures we suggest a concerted action of the orbital, electronic, and lattice subsystems dominated by electronic correlations.

Splitting in the Fermi surface of ZrTe_3: a surface charge density wave system

The electronic band structure and Fermi surface of ZrTe_3 was precisely determined by linearly polarized angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Several bands and a large part of the Fermi surface are found to be split by 100-200 meV into two parallel dispersions. Band structure calculations reveal that the splitting is due to a change of crystal structure near the surface. The agreement between calculation and experiment is enhanced by including the spin-orbit potential in the calculations, but the spin-orbit energy does not lead to a splitting of the bands. The dispersion of the highly nested small electron pocket that gives rise to the charge density wave is traceable even in the low-temperature gapped state, thus implying that the finite correlation length of the long-wavelength modulation leads to a smearing of the band back-folding.

Giant Kohn anomaly and the phase transition in charge density wave ZrTe_3

A strong Kohn anomaly in ZrTe_3 is identified in the mostly transverse acoustic phonon branch along the modulation vector q_P with polarization along the a* direction. This soft mode freezes to zero frequency at the transition temperature T_P and the temperature dependence of the frequency is strongly affected by fluctuation effects. Diffuse x-ray scattering of the incommensurate superstructure shows a power law scaling of the intensity and the correlation length that is compatible with an order parameter of dimension n = 2.

Anomalous frequency and intensity scaling of collective and local modes in a coupled spin tetrahedron system

We report on the magnetic excitation spectrum of the coupled spin tetrahedral system Cu$_{2}$Te$_{2}$O$_{5}$Cl$_{2}$ using Raman scattering on single crystals. The transition to an ordered state at T$_{N}^{Cl}$=18.2 K evidenced from thermodynamic data leads to the evolution of distinct low-energy magnetic excitations superimposed by a broad maximum. These modes are ascribed to magnons with different degree of localization and a two-magnon continuum. Two of the modes develop a substantial energy shift with decreasing temperature similar to the order parameter of other Neel ordered systems. The other two modes show only a negligible temperature dependence and dissolve above the ordering temperature in a continuum of excitations at finite energies. These observations point to a delicate interplay of magnetic inter- and intra-tetrahedra degrees of freedom and an importance of singlet fluctuations in describing a spin dynamics.

Fermi surface induced lattice distortion in NbTe$_2$

The origin of the monoclinic distortion and domain formation in the quasi two-dimensional layer compound NbTe$_2$ is investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission shows that the Fermi surface is pseudogapped over large portions of the Brillouin zone. Ab initio calculation of the electron and phonon bandstructure as well as the static RPA susceptibility lead us to conclude that Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling play a key role in the lowering of the crystal symmetry and in the formation of the charge density wave phase.

Superconducting Gap and Pseudogap in Bi-2212

We present results of Raman scattering experiments in differently doped Bi-2212 single crystals. Below Tc the spectra show pair-breaking features in the whole doping range. The low frequency power laws confirm the existence of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter. In the normal state between Tc and T* = 200K we find evidence for a pseudogap in B2g symmetry. Upon doping its effect on the spectra decreases while its energy scale appears to be unchanged.
