Numerical Semigroups of Sally Type II

In this paper we study numerical semigroups of Sally type of multiplicity $e$ and embedding dimension $ν\ge e-2$. We construct the minimal resolutions for these semigroup rings when they are symmetric and compute their Betti numbers. We also construct a minimal resolution for another special class of such semigroups of type $ν-1$. Finally, we propose some conjectures for the Betti numbers of families of non-symmetric Sally type semigroups in the above cases in relation to those of the corresponding Gorenstein cases of Sally type semigroups.

KW Semigroups -- Their Betti Numbers, Apéry Posets and Tangent Cones

Let p , where 2r=p,q,p+q whichever is even. In this paper, we prove a conjecture on the Betti numbers of the semigroup rings of these semigroups, showing that they coincide with those of the ideal of 2x2 minors of a 2xn generic matrix, where n is the embedding dimension. Moreover, we characterize the Apéry posets of Kunz-Waldi semigroups and determine when their tangent cones are Cohen-Macaulay.

Numerical Semigroups of Sally Type

Judith Sally proved in 1980 that the associated graded ring of one-dimensional Gorenstein local rings of multiplicity $e$ and embedding dimension $e-2$ are Cohen-Macaulay. She showed that the defining ideal of the associated graded ring of such rings is generated by ${e-2 \choose 2}$ elements. Numerical semigroup rings are a big class of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings. In 2014, Herzog and Stamate proved that the numerical semigroup $ $ defines a Gorenstein semigroup ring satisfying Sally's conditions above and such semigroups are called Gorenstein Sally Semigroups. We call a numerical semigroup $S$ as Sally type if $ = < e,e+1,\ldots,e+m-1, e+m+1,\ldots, e+n-1,e+n+1, \ldots 2e-1>$ for some $2 \leq m <n \leq e-2$. In this paper, we give a formula for its Frobenius number along with a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be Gorenstein. We compute the minimal number of generators for the defining ideal of the semigroup ring $k[S]$. Additionally, we present an algorithm and a GAP code used in applying Hochster's combinatorial formula to compute the first Betti number of $k[S]$.

Structure and Symmetry of Sally Type Semigroup Rings

Consider a numerical semigroup minimally generated by a subset of the interval $[e,2e-1]$ with multiplicity $e$ and width $e-1$. Such numerical semigroups are called Sally type semigroups. We show that the defining ideals of these semigroup rings, when the embedding dimension is $e-2$, generically have the structure of the sum of two determinantal ideals. More generally, Sally type numerical semigroups with multiplicity $e$ and embedding dimension $d=e-k$ are obtained by introducing $k$ gaps in the interval $[e,2e-1]$. It is known that for $k =2$, there is precisely one such semigroup that is Gorenstein, and it happens when one deletes consecutive integers. Let $S^e_k(j)$ denote the Sally type numerical semigroup of multiplcity $e$, embedding dimension $e-k$ obtained by deleting the $k$ consecutive integers $j, j+1, \ldots, j+k-1$.We prove that for any $1\le k < e/2$, the semigroup $S^e_k(j)$ is Gorenstein if and only if $j=k$. We construct an explicit minimal free resolution of the semigroup ring of $S^e_k(k)$ and compute the Betti numbers. In general, we characterize when $S^e_k(j)$ are symmetric and construct minimal resolutions for these Gorenstein semigroup rings.

Wilf Inequality is preserved under Gluing of Semigroups

Wilf Conjecture on numerical semigroups is an inequality connecting the Frobenius number, embedding dimension and the genus of the semigroup. The conjecture is still open in general. We prove that the Wilf inequality is preserved under gluing of numerical semigroups. If the numerical semigroups minimally generated by $A = \{ a_1, \ldots, a_p\}$ and $B = \{ b_1, \ldots, b_q\}$ satisfy the Wilf inequality, then so does their gluing which is minimally generated by $C =k_1A\sqcup k_2B$. We discuss the extended Wilf's Conjecture in higher dimensions and prove an analogous result.

The Betti Numbers of Kunz-Waldi Semigroups

Given two coprime numbers $p<q$, KW semigroups contain $p,q$ and are contained in $\langle p,q,r \rangle$ where $2r= p,q, p+q$ whichever is even. These semigroups were first introduced by Kunz and Waldi. Kunz and Waldi proved that all $KW$ semigroups of embedding dimension $n\geq 4$ have Cohen-Macaulay type $n-1$ and first Betti number ${n \choose 2}$. In this paper, we characterize KW semigroups whose defining ideal is generated by the $2\times 2$ minors of a $2\times n$ matrix. In addition, we identify all KW semigroups that lie on the interior of the same face of the Kunz cone $\mathcal C_p$ as a KW semigroup with determinantal defining ideal. Thus, we provide an explicit formula for the Betti numbers of all those KW semigroups.

A Class of Numerical Semigroups Defined by Kunz and Waldi

In this paper, we explore a class of numerical semigroups initiated by Kunz and Waldi containing two coprime numbers $p < q$, which we call KW semigroups. We characterize KW numerical semigroups by their principal matrices. We present a necessary and sufficient criterion for a matrix to be the principal matrix of a KW semigroup. An explicit description of the minimal resolutions of numerical semigroups in the same class with small embedding dimensions 3 and 4 is given. We give a generalization of this notion to three dimensions using lattice paths under a plane and present some preliminary results and questions.

Gluing And Splitting of Homogeneous Toric Ideals

We show that any two homogeneous affine semigroups can be glued by embedding them suitably in a higher dimensional space. As a consequence, we show that the sum of their homogeneous toric ideals is again a homogeneous toric ideal, and that the minimal graded free resolution of the associated semigroup ring is the tensor product of the minimal resolutions of the two smaller parts. We apply our results to toric ideals associated to graphs to show how two of them can be a splitting of a toric ideal associated to a graph or an hypergraph.

On gluing semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^n$ and the consequences

A semigroup $\langle C\rangle$ in $\mathbb{N}^n$ is a gluing of $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$ if its finite set of generators $C$ splits into two parts, $C=k_1A\sqcup k_2B$ with $k_1,k_2\geq 1$, and the defining ideals of the corresponding semigroup rings satisfy that $I_C$ is generated by $I_A+I_B$ and one extra element. Two semigroups $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$ can be glued if there exist positive integers $k_1,k_2$ such that, for $C=k_1A\sqcup k_2B$, $\langle C\rangle$ is a gluing of $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$. Although any two numerical semigroups, namely semigroups in dimension $n=1$, can always be glued, it is no longer the case in higher dimensions. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on $A$ and $B$ for the existence of a gluing of $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$, and give examples to illustrate why they are necessary. These generalize and explain the previous known results on existence of gluing. We also prove that the glued semigroup $\langle C\rangle$ inherits the properties like Gorenstein or Cohen-Macaulay from the two parts $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$.

Principal Matrices of Numerical Semigroups

Principal matrices of a numerical semigroup of embedding dimension n are special types of $n \times n$ matrices over integers of rank $\leq n - 1$. We show that such matrices and even the pseudo principal matrices of size n must have rank $\geq \frac{n}{2}$ regardless of the embedding dimension. We give structure theorems for pseudo principal matrices for which at least one $n - 1 \times n - 1$ principal minor vanish and thereby characterize the semigroups in embedding dimensions $4$ and $5$ in terms of their principal matrices. When the pseudo principal matrix is of rank $n - 1$, we give a sufficient condition for it to be principal.

An Upper Bound for the First Hilbert Coefficient of Gorenstein Algebras and Modules

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $M= \bigoplus_n M_n$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, minimally generated by homogeneous elements of degree zero with a graded $R$-minimal free resolution $\mathbf{F}$. A Cohen-Macaulay module $M$ is Gorenstein when the graded resolution is symmetric. We give an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient, $e_1$ in terms of the shifts in the graded resolution of $M$. When $M = R/I$, a Gorenstein algebra, this bound agrees with the bound obtained in \cite{ES} in Gorenstein algebras with quasi-pure resolution. We conjecture a similar bound for the higher coefficients.

Gluing semigroups -- when and how

Given two semigroups $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$ in ${\mathbb N}^n$, we wonder when they can be glued, i.e., when there exists a semigroup $\langle C\rangle$ in ${\mathbb N}^n$ such that the defining ideals of the corresponding semigroup rings satisfy that $I_C=I_A+I_B+\langleρ\rangle$ for some binomial $ρ$. If $n\geq 2$ and $k[A]$ and $k[B]$ are Cohen-Macaulay, we prove that in order to glue them, one of the two semigroups must be degenerate. Then we study the two most degenerate cases: when one of the semigroups is generated by one single element (simple split) and the case where it is generated by at least two elements and all the elements of the semigroup lie on a line. In both cases we characterize the semigroups that can be glued and say how to glue them. Further, in these cases, we conclude that the glued $\langle C\rangle$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if both $\langle A\rangle$ and $\langle B\rangle$ are also Cohen-Macaulay. As an application, we characterize precisely the Cohen-Macaulay semigroups that can be glued when $n=2$.

Positivity of Mixed Multiplicities of Filtrations

The theory of mixed multiplicities of filtrations by $m$-primary ideals in a ring is introduced in a recent paper by Cutkosky, Sarkar and Srinivasan. In this paper, we consider the positivity of mixed multiplicities of filtrations. We show that the mixed multiplicities of filtrations must be nonnegative real numbers and give examples to show that they could be zero or even irrational. When $R$ is analytically irreducible, and $\mathcal I(1),\ldots,\mathcal I(r)$ are filtrations of $R$ by $m_R$-primary ideals, we show that all of the mixed multiplicities $e_R(\mathcal I(1)^{[d_1]},\ldots,\mathcal I(r)^{[d_r]};R)$ are positive if and only if the ordinary multiplicities $e_R(\mathcal I(i);R)$ for $1\le i\le r$ are positive. We extend this to modules and prove a simple characterization of when the mixed multiplicities are positive or zero on a finitely generated module.

Mixed Multiplicities of Filtrations

In this paper we define and explore properties of mixed multiplicities of (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations of $m_R$-primary ideals in a Noetherian local ring $R$, generalizing the classical theory for $m_R$-primary ideals. We construct a real polynomial whose coefficients give the mixed multiplicities. This polynomial exists if and only if the dimension of the nilradical of the completion of $R$ is less than the dimension of $R$, which holds for instance if $R$ is excellent and reduced. We show that many of the classical theorems for mixed multiplicities of $m_R$-primary ideals hold for filtrations, including the famous Minkowski inequalities of Teissier, and Rees and Sharp.

The structure of the minimal free resolution of semigroup rings obtained by gluing

We construct a minimal free resolution of the semigroup ring k[C] in terms of minimal resolutions of k[A] and k[B] when is a numerical semigroup obtained by gluing two numerical semigroups and . Using our explicit construction, we compute the Betti numbers, graded Betti numbers, regularity and Hilbert series of k[C], and prove that the minimal free resolution of k[C] has a differential graded algebra structure provided the resolutions of k[A] and k[B] possess them. We discuss the consequences of our results in small embedding dimensions. Finally, we give an extension of our main result to semigroups in N^n

A note on the subadditivity of Syzygies

Let $R=S/I$ be a graded algebra with $t_i$ and $T_i$ being the minimal and maximal shifts in the minimal $S$ resolution of $R$ at degree $i$. In this paper we prove that $t_n\leq t_1+T_{n-1}$, for all $n$ and as a consequence, we show that for Gorenstein algebras of codimension $h$, the subadditivity of maximal shifts $T_i$ in the minimal resolution holds for $i \geq h-1$, i.e, we show that $T_i \leq T_a+T_{i-a}$ for $i\geq h-1$.

A note on Gorenstein monomial curves

Let $k$ be an arbitrary field. In this note, we show that if a sequence of relatively prime positive integers ${\bf a}=(a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4)$ defines a Gorenstein non complete intersection monomial curve ${\mathcal C}({\bf a})$ in ${\mathbb A}_k^4$, then there exist two vectors ${\bf u}$ and ${\bf v}$ such that ${\mathcal C}({\bf a}+t{\bf u})$ and ${\mathcal C}({\bf a}+t{\bf v})$ are also Gorenstein non complete intersection affine monomial curves for almost all $t\geq 0$.

On the number of generators of ideals defining Gorenstein Artin algebras with Hilbert function $ (1,n+1, 1+{n+1\choose 2},...,{n+1\choose 2}+1, n+1,1)$

Let $R = k[w, x_1,..., x_n]/I$ be a graded Gorenstein Artin algebra . Then $I = \ann F$ for some $F$ in the divided power algebra $k_{DP}[W, X_1,..., X_n]$. If $RI_2$ is a height one idealgenerated by $n$ quadrics, then $I_2 \subset (w)$ after a possible change of variables. Let $J = I \cap k[x_1,..., x_n]$. Then $μ(I) \le μ(J)+n+1$ and $I$ is said to be generic if $μ(I) = μ(J) + n+1$. In this article we prove necessary conditions, in terms of $F$, for an ideal to be generic. With some extra assumptions on the exponents of terms of $F$, we obtain a characterization for $I = \ann F$ to be generic in codimension four.
