Chirality transfer in lyotropic twist-bend nematics

Using molecular simulations and classical density functional theory, we study the liquid-crystalline phase behaviour of a series of bent rod-like mesogens with a controlled degree of chirality introduced through a twist at the centre of the particle. In the achiral limit, isotropic, uniaxial nematic, twist-bend nematic and smectic phases form as the packing fraction increases. On introducing chirality, the symmetry between the right- and left-handed twist-bend phases is broken. The phase with the same-handedness as the particles quickly becomes overwhelmingly favoured as the magnitude of the particle twist is increased, because the particles are then able to better follow the helical director field lines in the twist-bend phase and pack more efficiently. By contrast, the cholesteric phase is predicted to have the opposite handedness to that of the particle due to the relatively weakly-twisted nature of the particles. That the cholesteric and twist-bend phases have opposite handedness illustrates the differences in the mechanisms of chirality transfer in the two phases. We also found that doping a system of achiral mesogens with a small fraction of chiral particles led to selection of the twist-bend phase with the same chirality as the particle.

Computing the elastic mechanical properties of rod-like DNA nanostructures

To study the elastic properties of rod-like DNA nanostructures, we perform long simulations of these structure using the oxDNA coarse-grained model. By analysing the fluctuations in these trajectories we obtain estimates of the bend and twist persistence lengths, and the underlying bend and twist elastic moduli and couplings between them. Only on length scales beyond those associated with the spacings between the interhelix crossovers do the bending fluctuations behave like those of a worm-like chain. The obtained bending persistence lengths are much larger than that for double-stranded DNA and increase non-linearly with the number of helices, whereas the twist moduli increase approximately linearly. To within the numerical error in our data, the twist-bend coupling constants are of order zero. That the bending persistence lengths we obtain are generally somewhat higher than in experiment probably reflects both that the simulated origami have no assembly defects and that the oxDNA extensional modulus for double-stranded DNA is too large.

Theory of Electronic relaxation in solution: Exact solution in case of parabolic potential with a sink of finite width

We give a general method for finding the exact solution for the problem of electronic relaxation in solution, modeled by a particle undergoing diffusive motion under a potential in the presence of a sink of finite width. The solution requires the knowledge of the Green's function in Laplace domain in the absence of any sink. We find the exact solution for the case of parabolic potential. This model has considerable improvement over the existing models for understanding non-radiative electonic relaxation of a molecule in solution, in fact this is the first model where a simple analytical solution is possible in the case of a sink of finite width.

Diffusion on a flat potential with a new localized sink: Exact Analytical Solution

We give a method for finding the exact analytical solution for the problem of a particle undergoing diffusive motion in a flat potential in the presence of a new localized sink. The Diffusive motion is described using the Smoluchowski equation. Our method requires the knowledge of Laplace transform of Green's function for the motion in absence of the sink. The same model for sink can be used to deal with other potentials.
