Dynamical quantum phase transition for mixed states in open systems

Based on a kinematic approach in defining a geometric phase for a density matrix, we define the generalized Loschmidt overlap amplitude (GLOA) for an open system for arbitrary quantum evolution. The GLOA reduces to the Loschmidt overlap amplitude (LOA) with a modified dynamic phase for unitary evolution of a pure state, with the argument of the GLOA well-defined by the geometric phase, thus possessing similar physical interpretation to that of the LOA. The rate function for the GLOA exhibits non-analyticity at a critical time, which corresponds to the dynamical quantum phase transition. We observe that the dynamical quantum phase transition related to GLOA is not destroyed under a finite temperature and weak enough dissipation. In particular, we find that a new type of dynamical quantum phase transition emerges in a dissipation system. The proposed GLOA provides a powerful tool in the investigation of a dynamical quantum phase transition in an arbitrary quantum system, which not only can characterize the robustness of the dynamical quantum phase transition but also can be used to search for new transitions.

A Universal Quantum Computing Virtual Machine

A medium-scale quantum computer with full universal quantum computing capability is necessary for various practical aims and testing applications. Here we report a 34-qubit quantum virtual machine (QtVM) based on a medium server. Our QtVM can run quantum assembly language with graphic interfaces. The QtVM is implemented with single qubit rotation gate, single to multiple controlled NOT gates to realize the universal quantum computation. Remarkably, it can realize a series of basic functions, such as, the "if" conditional programming language based on single-shot projective measurement results, "for" iteration programming language, build in arithmetic calculation. The measurement can be single-shot and arbitrary number of multi-shot types. In addition, there is in principle no limitation on number of logic gates implemented for quantum computation. By using QtVM, we demonstrate the simulation of dynamical quantum phase transition of transverse field Ising model by quantum circuits, where 34 qubits with one million gates are realized. We also show the realization of programmable Shor algorithm for factoring 15 and 35.

A Unified and Strengthened Framework for the Uncertainty Relation

We provide a unified and strengthened framework for the product form and the sum form variance-based uncertainty relations by constructing a unified uncertainty relation. In the unified framework, we deduce that the uncertainties of the incompatible observables are bounded by not only the commutator of themselves, but also the quantities related with the other operator. This operator can provide information so that we can capture the uncertainty of the measurement result more accurately, and thus is named as the information operator. The introduction of the information operator can fix the deficiencies in both the product form and the sum form uncertainty relations, and provides a more accurate description of the quantum uncertainty relation. The unified framework also proposes a new interpretation of the uncertainty relation for non-Hermitian operators; i.e., the "observable" second-order origin moments of the non-Hermitian operators cannot be arbitrarily small at the same time when they are generalized-incompatible on the new definition of the generalized commutator.

Bell inequalities violation within non-Bunch-Davies states

We study the quantum nature of non-Bunch-Davies states in de Sitter space by evaluating CHSH inequality on a localized two-atom system. We show that quantum nonlocality can be generated through the Markovian evolution of two-atom, witnessed by a violation of CHSH inequality on its final equilibrium state. We find that the upper bound of inequality violation is determined by different choices of de Sitter-invariant vacua sectors. In particular, with growing Gibbons-Hawking temperature, the CHSH bound degrades monotonously for Bunch-Davies vacuum sector. Due to the intrinsic correlation of non-Bunch-Davies vacua, we find that the related violation of inequality can however drastically increase after certain turning point, and may persist for arbitrarily large environment decoherence. This implies that the CHSH inequality is useful to classify the initial quantum state of the Universe. Finally, we clarify that the witnessed intrinsic correlation of non-Bunch-Davies vacua can be utilized for quantum information applications, e.g., surpassing the Heisenberg uncertainty bound of quantum measurement in de Sitter space.

Information Theoretical Analysis of Quantum Metrology

We address the framework of analysing quantum metrology in the information-theoretic picture. Firstly we show how to extract the maximum amount of information in general via suitable state initialization of the probes at the beginning and a quantum measurement at the end. Our analysis can apply to both the single-parameter and the multi-parameter estimation procedures as well as to any other quantum information processing procedures. We then establish a direct connection between the information-theoretic picture of quantum metrology and its conventional variance-covariance picture, by showing that any estimation procedure achieves Heisenberg limit in variance-covariance picture can also reach the information-theoretic Heisenberg limit in the asymptotic sense. As a direct consequence, we argue that the entangled measurement is not necessary for achieving Heisenberg limit in the information-theoretic pictures, which is explicitly illustrated for the Quantum-Classical parallel strategy of quantum metrology with a separable measurement employed and the Heisenberg limit saturated in both pictures.

Hierarchy of the nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence and Bell nonlocality

Quantum coherence and nonlocality capture nature of quantumness from different aspects. For the two-qubit states with diagonal correlation matrix, we prove strictly a hierarchy between the nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) and Bell nonlocality by showing geometrically that the NAQC created on one qubit by local measurement on another qubit captures quantum correlation which is stronger than Bell nonlocality. For general states, our numerical results present strong evidence that this hierarchy may still hold. So the NAQC states form a subset of the states that can exhibit Bell nonlocality. We further propose a measure of NAQC that can be used for a quantitative study of it in bipartite states.

Exploring Topological Phase Transition via Quantum Walk in Coherent State Space

The quantum walk is a dynamical protocol which describes the motion of spinful particles on a lattice. Also, it has been demonstrated to be a powerful platform to explore topological quantum matter. Recently, the quantum walk in coherent state space has been proposed theoretically and realized experimentally. However, due to the inherent characteristics of coherent states, it is challenging to control the number of photons when we need the coherent space to be a nearly orthogonal space in practice. Here, we demonstrate that the nonorthogonality of coherent sates, on the one hand can be cancelled by multiple measurement, on the other hand, it is useful resource to characterize the nature of the system. Thus the number of photons of the system is controllable. We first present a feasible scheme to measure the wave function of quantum walks. Then we show that the expected number of photons of the coherent space is good observable to represent topological properties of the system, which reflected the advantage of coherent state space quantum walks. In addition, we propose an experimental protocol in a circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture, where a superconducting qubit is a coin while the cavity mode is used for quantum walk.

Two-copy Quantum Teleportation

We investigate two-copy scenario of quantum teleportation based on Bell measurements. The detailed protocol is presented and the general expression of the corresponding optimal teleportation delity is derived, which is given by the two-copy fully entangled fraction that is invariant under local unitary transformations. We prove that under a speci c case of the protocol, which is signi cant for improving the optimal delity, the set of states with their two-copy fully entangled fractions bounded by a threshold value that required for useful two-copy teleportation is convex and compact. Hence the witness operators exist to separate states that are useful for two-copy teleportation from the rest ones. Moreover, we show that the optimal delity of two-copy teleportation surpasses that of the original one copy teleportation.

Quantum estimation in an expanding spacetime

We investigate the quantum estimation on the Hubble parameter of an expanding de Sitter space by quantum metrological techniques. By exploring the dynamics of a freely falling Unruh-DeWitt detector, which interacts with a scalar field coupling to curvature, we calculate the Fisher information (FI) and quantum Fisher information (QFI) for the detector, which bound the highest precision of the estimation on Hubble parameter. In standard Bunch-Davies vacuum, we show that the maxima of FI/QFI are located for particular initial state of probe. Beside its dependence on the evolving time of detector and the energy spacing of atom $ω$, we show that the maxima of FI/QFI can be significantly enhanced once a proper coupling of scalar field to curvature is chosen. For instance, we show numerically that the estimation in the scenario with minimally/nearly minimally coupling scalar field can always outperform that with conformally coupling scalar field, corresponding to a higher FI/QFI in estimation. Moreover, we find that for general $α-$vacua of de Sitter space, a further improvement of estimation can be achieved, attributed to the squeezed nature of $α-$vacua that heavily constrains the measurement uncertainty. Some implications of our results are also discussed.

Quantum coherence and geometric quantum discord

Quantum coherence and quantum correlations are of fundamental and practical significance for the development of quantum mechanics. They are also cornerstones of quantum computation and quantum communication theory. Searching physically meaningful and mathematically rigorous quantifiers of them are long-standing concerns of the community of quantum information science, and various faithful measures have been introduced so far. We review in this paper the measures of discordlike quantum correlations for bipartite and multipartite systems, the measures of quantum coherence for any single quantum system, and their relationship in different settings. Our aim is to provide a full review about the resource theory of quantum coherence, including its application in many-body systems, and the discordlike quantum correlations which were defined based on the various distance measures of states. We discuss the interrelations between quantum coherence and quantum correlations established in an operational way, and the fundamental characteristics of quantum coherence such as their complementarity under different basis sets, their duality with path information of an interference experiment, their distillation and dilution under different operations, and some new viewpoints of the superiority of the quantum algorithms from the perspective of quantum coherence. Additionally, we review properties of geometric quantum correlations and quantum coherence under noisy quantum channels. Finally, the main progresses for the study of quantum correlations and quantum coherence in the relativistic settings are reviewed. All these results provide an overview for the conceptual implications and basic connections of quantum coherence, quantum correlations, and their potential applications in various related subjects of physics.

Nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence in high-dimensional states

By local measurements on party $A$ of a system $AB$ and classical communication between its two parties, one can achieve a nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) on party $B$. For the $l_1$ norm of coherence and the relative entropy of coherence, we generalized the framework of NAQC for two qubits and derived the criteria which capture NAQC in the $(d\times d)$-dimensional states when $d$ is a power of a prime. We also presented a new framework for formulating NAQC, and showed through explicit examples its capacity on capturing the NAQC states. Moreover, we proved that any bipartite state with NAQC is quantum entangled, thus the obtained criteria can also be used as an entanglement witness.

Fine-grained uncertainty relation under the relativistic motion

Among various uncertainty relations, the profound fine-grained uncertainty relation is used to distinguish the uncertainty inherent in obtaining any combination of outcomes for different measurements. In this Letter, we explore this uncertainty relation in relativistic regime. For observer undergoes an uniform acceleration who is immersed in an Unruh thermal bath, we show that the uncertainty bound is dependent on the acceleration parameter and choice of Unruh modes. We find that the measurements in mutually unbiased bases, sharing same uncertainty bound in inertial frame, could be distinguished from each other for a noninertial observer. In an alternative scenario, for the observer restricted in a single rigid cavity, we show that the uncertainty bound exhibits a periodic evolution w.r.t. the duration of acceleration. With properly chosen cavity parameters, the uncertainty bounds could be protected. Moreover, we find that uncertainty bound can be degraded for specific quantum measurements to violate the bound exhibited in nonrelativistic limit, which can be attributed to the entanglement generation between cavity modes during particular epoch. Several implications of our results are discussed.

Unsupervised Generative Modeling Using Matrix Product States

Generative modeling, which learns joint probability distribution from data and generates samples according to it, is an important task in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Inspired by probabilistic interpretation of quantum physics, we propose a generative model using matrix product states, which is a tensor network originally proposed for describing (particularly one-dimensional) entangled quantum states. Our model enjoys efficient learning analogous to the density matrix renormalization group method, which allows dynamically adjusting dimensions of the tensors and offers an efficient direct sampling approach for generative tasks. We apply our method to generative modeling of several standard datasets including the Bars and Stripes, random binary patterns and the MNIST handwritten digits to illustrate the abilities, features and drawbacks of our model over popular generative models such as Hopfield model, Boltzmann machines and generative adversarial networks. Our work sheds light on many interesting directions of future exploration on the development of quantum-inspired algorithms for unsupervised machine learning, which are promisingly possible to be realized on quantum devices.

Naturally Phase Matched Lithium Niobate Nanocircuits for Integrated Nonlinear Photonics

High complexity, dense integrated nanophotonic circuits possessing strong nonlinearities are desirable for a breadth of applications in classical and quantum optics. In this work, we study natural phase matching via modal engineering in lithium niobate (LN) waveguides and microring resonators on chip for second harmonic generation (SHG). By carefully engineering the geometry dispersion, we observe a $26\%~W^{-1}cm^{-2}$ normalized efficiency for SHG in a waveguide with submicron transverse mode confinement. With similar cross-sectional dimensions, we demonstrate phase matched SHG in a microring resonator with 10 times enhancement on the out-coupled second-harmonic power. Our platform is capable of harnessing the strongest optical nonlinear and electro-optic effects in LN on chip with unrestricted planar circuit layouts. It offers opportunities for dense and scalable integration of efficient photonic devices with low loss and high nonlinearity.

Robust and Efficient Graph Correspondence Transfer for Person Re-identification

Spatial misalignment caused by variations in poses and viewpoints is one of the most critical issues that hinders the performance improvement in existing person re-identification (Re-ID) algorithms. To address this problem, in this paper, we present a robust and efficient graph correspondence transfer (REGCT) approach for explicit spatial alignment in Re-ID. Specifically, we propose to establish the patch-wise correspondences of positive training pairs via graph matching. By exploiting both spatial and visual contexts of human appearance in graph matching, meaningful semantic correspondences can be obtained. To circumvent the cumbersome \emph{on-line} graph matching in testing phase, we propose to transfer the \emph{off-line} learned patch-wise correspondences from the positive training pairs to test pairs. In detail, for each test pair, the training pairs with similar pose-pair configurations are selected as references. The matching patterns (i.e., the correspondences) of the selected references are then utilized to calculate the patch-wise feature distances of this test pair. To enhance the robustness of correspondence transfer, we design a novel pose context descriptor to accurately model human body configurations, and present an approach to measure the similarity between a pair of pose context descriptors. Meanwhile, to improve testing efficiency, we propose a correspondence template ensemble method using the voting mechanism, which significantly reduces the amount of patch-wise matchings involved in distance calculation. With aforementioned strategies, the REGCT model can effectively and efficiently handle the spatial misalignment problem in Re-ID. Extensive experiments on five challenging benchmarks, including VIPeR, Road, PRID450S, 3DPES and CUHK01, evidence the superior performance of REGCT over other state-of-the-art approaches.

Characterization of topological states via dual multipartite entanglement

We demonstrate that multipartite entanglement is able to characterize one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological order, which is witnessed by the scaling behavior of the quantum Fisher information of the ground state with respect to the spin operators defined in the dual lattice. We investigate an extended Kitaev chain with a $\mathbf{Z}$ symmetry identified equivalently by winding numbers and paired Majorana zero modes at each end. The topological phases with high winding numbers are detected by the scaling coefficient of the quantum Fisher information density with respect to generators in different dual lattices. Containing richer properties and more complex structures than bipartite entanglement, the dual multipartite entanglement of the topological state has promising applications in robust quantum computation and quantum metrology, and can be generalized to identify topological order in the Kitaev honeycomb model.

Graph Correspondence Transfer for Person Re-identification

In this paper, we propose a graph correspondence transfer (GCT) approach for person re-identification. Unlike existing methods, the GCT model formulates person re-identification as an off-line graph matching and on-line correspondence transferring problem. In specific, during training, the GCT model aims to learn off-line a set of correspondence templates from positive training pairs with various pose-pair configurations via patch-wise graph matching. During testing, for each pair of test samples, we select a few training pairs with the most similar pose-pair configurations as references, and transfer the correspondences of these references to test pair for feature distance calculation. The matching score is derived by aggregating distances from different references. For each probe image, the gallery image with the highest matching score is the re-identifying result. Compared to existing algorithms, our GCT can handle spatial misalignment caused by large variations in view angles and human poses owing to the benefits of patch-wise graph matching. Extensive experiments on five benchmarks including VIPeR, Road, PRID450S, 3DPES and CUHK01 evidence the superior performance of GCT model over other state-of-the-art methods.

Improved Landauer's principle and generalized second law of thermodynamics with initial correlations and non-equilibrium surrounding environments

Traditional form of the second law of thermodynamics is strongly restricted by three conditions: One is the initial joint state of the system and surroundings should be a product state, so that there exists no initial correlations. The second is the initial states of surroundings are in equilibrium thermodynamics. And the end is weak couplings between the system and surroundings. This formulation of the second law should be reexamined in order to understand the relations of thermodynamics and information theory, especially, when existing initial correlations. In this work, using the techniques of quantum statistical mechanics for thermodynamics and quantum information science, we recast fundamental laws of thermodynamics from theoretical information point of view. Initial correlations between the system and surroundings are considered, which evolves thermodynamically and result in modifications of the traditional formulations. We obtained improved forms of the entropy increase, Landauer's principle, and the second law of thermodynamics, which are exhibited as equalities rather than inequalities, and through which physical nature of information can be demonstrated precisely. Further, using the language totally belongs to quantum information theory, we give the direction of natural evolution process a new statement: the evolution of an isolated quantum system, where no correlations exist between subsystems, initially, always towards to directions of the correlation information never be decreased. Such result indicates that the traditional principle of entropy increase can be redescribed using information theory, identically.
