Parallel Tracking and Verifying: A Framework for Real-Time and High Accuracy Visual Tracking

Being intensively studied, visual tracking has seen great recent advances in either speed (e.g., with correlation filters) or accuracy (e.g., with deep features). Real-time and high accuracy tracking algorithms, however, remain scarce. In this paper we study the problem from a new perspective and present a novel parallel tracking and verifying (PTAV) framework, by taking advantage of the ubiquity of multi-thread techniques and borrowing from the success of parallel tracking and mapping in visual SLAM. Our PTAV framework typically consists of two components, a tracker T and a verifier V, working in parallel on two separate threads. The tracker T aims to provide a super real-time tracking inference and is expected to perform well most of the time; by contrast, the verifier V checks the tracking results and corrects T when needed. The key innovation is that, V does not work on every frame but only upon the requests from T; on the other end, T may adjust the tracking according to the feedback from V. With such collaboration, PTAV enjoys both the high efficiency provided by T and the strong discriminative power by V. In our extensive experiments on popular benchmarks including OTB2013, OTB2015, TC128 and UAV20L, PTAV achieves the best tracking accuracy among all real-time trackers, and in fact performs even better than many deep learning based solutions. Moreover, as a general framework, PTAV is very flexible and has great rooms for improvement and generalization.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations and Bell correlations in the simplest scenario

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an intermediate type of quantum nonlocality which sits between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. A set of correlations is Bell nonlocal if it does not admit a local hidden variable (LHV) model, while it is EPR nonlocal if it does not admit a local hidden variable-local hidden state (LHV-LHS) model. It is interesting to know what states can generate EPR-nonlocal correlations in the simplest nontrivial scenario, that is, two projective measurements for each party sharing a two-qubit state. Here we show that a two-qubit state can generate EPR-nonlocal full correlations (excluding marginal statistics) in this scenario if and only if it can generate Bell-nonlocal correlations. If full statistics (including marginal statistics) is taken into account, surprisingly, the same scenario can manifest the simplest one-way steering and the strongest hierarchy between steering and Bell nonlocality. To illustrate these intriguing phenomena in simple setups, several concrete examples are discussed in detail, which facilitates experimental demonstration. In the course of study, we introduce the concept of restricted LHS models and thereby derive a necessary and sufficient semidefinite-programming criterion to determine the steerability of any bipartite state under given measurements. Analytical criteria are further derived in several scenarios of strong theoretical and experimental interest.

Relative quantum coherence, incompatibility, and quantum correlations of states

Quantum coherence, incompatibility, and quantum correlations are fundamental features of quantum physics. A unified view of those features is crucial for revealing quantitatively their intrinsic connections. We define the relative quantum coherence of two states as the coherence of one state in the reference basis spanned by the eigenvectors of another one and establish its quantitative connections with the extent of mutual incompatibility of two states. We also show that the proposed relative quantum coherence, which can take any form of measures such as $l_1$ norm and relative entropy, can be interpreted as or connected to various quantum correlations such as quantum discord, symmetric discord, entanglement of formation, and quantum deficits. Our results reveal conceptual implications and basic connections of quantum coherence, mutual incompatibility, and quantum correlations.

Coherence as resource in scattering quantum walk search on complete graph

We investigate the behavior of coherence in scattering quantum walk search on complete graph under the condition that the total number of vertices of the graph is greatly larger than the marked number of vertices we are searching, $N \gg v$. We find that the consumption of coherence represents the increase of the success probability for the searching, also the consumption of coherence is related to the efficiency of the algorithm represented by oracle queries. If no coherence is consumed, the efficiency of the algorithm will be the same as the classical blind search, implying that coherence is responsible for the speed up in this quantum algorithm over its classical counterpart. In case the initial state is incoherent, still $N \gg v$ is assumed, the probability of success for searching will not change with time, indicating that this quantum search algorithm loses its power. We then conclude that the coherence plays an essential role and is responsible for the speed up in this quantum algorithm.

Disorder-protected topological entropy after a quantum quench

Topological phases of matter are considered the bedrock of novel quantum materials as well as ideal candidates for quantum computers that possess robustness at the physical level. The robustness of the topological phase at finite temperature or away from equilibrium is therefore a very desirable feature. Disorder can improve the lifetime of the encoded topological qubits. Here we tackle the problem of the survival of the topological phase as detected by topological entropy, after a sudden quantum quench. We introduce a method to study analytically the time evolution of the system after a quantum quench and show that disorder in the couplings of the Hamiltonian of the toric code and the resulting Anderson localization can make the topological entropy resilient.

SANet: Structure-Aware Network for Visual Tracking

Convolutional neural network (CNN) has drawn increasing interest in visual tracking owing to its powerfulness in feature extraction. Most existing CNN-based trackers treat tracking as a classification problem. However, these trackers are sensitive to similar distractors because their CNN models mainly focus on inter-class classification. To address this problem, we use self-structure information of object to distinguish it from distractors. Specifically, we utilize recurrent neural network (RNN) to model object structure, and incorporate it into CNN to improve its robustness to similar distractors. Considering that convolutional layers in different levels characterize the object from different perspectives, we use multiple RNNs to model object structure in different levels respectively. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks, OTB100, TC-128 and VOT2015, show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other methods. Code is released at http://www.dabi.temple.edu/~hbling/code/SANet/SANet.html.

Experimental valley qubit state tomography and coherence induced uncertainty relations in monolayer WSe$_2$

Velleytronics as a new electronic conception is an emerging exciting research field with wide potential applications, which is attracting great research interests for their extraordinary properties. The localized electronic spins by optical generation of valley polarization with spin-like quantum numbers are promising candidates for implementing quantum-information processing in solids. It is expected that a single qubit preparation can be realized optically by using combination of left- and right-circularly polarized lights. Significantly in a series of experiments, this has already been well achieved by linearly polarized laser representing equal weights of left- and right-circular components resulting in formation of a valley exciton as a specific pseudo-spin qubit with equal amplitudes for spin up and spin down. Further researches on the control of valley pseudospin using longitudinal magnetic field and optical Stark effect have been reported. However, a general qubit preparation has not yet been demonstrated. Moreover as a platform for quantum information processing, the precise readout of a qubit state is necessary, for which the state tomography is a standard method in obtaining all information of a qubit state density matrix.

Exact analysis of the spectral properties of the anisotropic two-bosons Rabi model

We introduce the anisotropic two-photon Rabi model in which the rotating and counter rotating terms enters along with two different coupling constants. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are studied with exact means. We employ a variation of the Braak method based on Bogolubov rotation of the underlying $su(1,1)$ Lie algebra. Accordingly, the spectrum is provided by the analytical properties of a suitable meromorphic function. Our formalism applies to the two-modes Rabi model as well, sharing the same algebraic structure of the two-photon model. Through the analysis of the spectrum, we discover that the model displays close analogies to many-body systems undergoing quantum phase transitions.

Resource Theory of Special Antiunitary Asymmetry

We propose the resource theory of a special antiunitary asymmetry in quantum theory. The notion of antiunitary asymmetry, in particular, ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry is different from the usual resource theory for asymmetry about unitary representation of a symmetry group, as the ${\cal PT}$ operator is an antiunitary operator with ${\cal P}$ being any self-inverse unitary and ${\cal T}$ being the time-reversal operations. Here, we introduce the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric states, ${\cal PT}$-covariant operations and ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measures. For single qubit system, we find duality relations between the ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measures and the coherence. Moreover, for two-qubit states we prove the duality relations between the ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measures and entanglement measure such as the concurrence. This gives a resource theoretic interpretation to the concurrence which is lacking till today. Thus, the ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measure and entanglement can be viewed as two sides of an underlying resource. Finally, the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric dynamics is discussed and some open questions are addressed.

Extracting quantum coherence via steering

As the precious resource for quantum information processing, quantum coherence can be created remotely if the involved two sites are quantum correlated. It can be expected that the amount of coherence created should depend on the quantity of the shared quantum correlation, which is also a resource. Here, we establish an operational connection between coherence induced by steering and the quantum correlation. We find that the steering-induced coherence quantified by such as relative entropy of coherence and trace-norm of coherence is bounded from above by a known quantum correlation measure defined as the one-side measurement-induced disturbance. The condition that the upper bound saturated by the induced coherence varies for different measures of coherence. The tripartite scenario is also studied and similar conclusion can be obtained. Our results provide the operational connections between local and non-local resources in quantum information processing.

Coherence susceptibility as a probe of quantum phase transitions

We introduce a coherence susceptibility method, based on the fact that it signals quantum fluctuations, for identifying quantum phase transitions, which are induced by quantum fluctuations. This method requires no prior knowledge of order parameter, and there is no need for careful considerations concerning the choice of a bipartition of the system. It can identify different types of quantum phase transition points exactly. At finite temperatures, where quantum criticality is influenced by thermal fluctuations, our method can pinpoint the temperature frame of quantum criticality, which perfectly coincides with recent experiments.

Multi-level Contextual RNNs with Attention Model for Scene Labeling

Context in image is crucial for scene labeling while existing methods only exploit local context generated from a small surrounding area of an image patch or a pixel, by contrast long-range and global contextual information is ignored. To handle this issue, we in this work propose a novel approach for scene labeling by exploring multi-level contextual recurrent neural networks (ML-CRNNs). Specifically, we encode three kinds of contextual cues, i.e., local context, global context and image topic context in structural recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to model long-range local and global dependencies in image. In this way, our method is able to `see' the image in terms of both long-range local and holistic views, and make a more reliable inference for image labeling. Besides, we integrate the proposed contextual RNNs into hierarchical convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and exploit dependence relationships in multiple levels to provide rich spatial and semantic information. Moreover, we novelly adopt an attention model to effectively merge multiple levels and show that it outperforms average- or max-pooling fusion strategies. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves new state-of-the-art results on the CamVid, SiftFlow and Stanford-background datasets.

Entropic characterization of coherence in quantum evolutions

By using relative entropy of coherence, we characterize the coherence gain induced by some quantum evolutions, including the cohering power of unitary operations and the decohering power of quantum operations. We find that the cohering power of the controlled unitary operation can be reduced to the cohering power of the corresponding unitary operation. We observe that the global coherence generated via incoherent operation applied to the system and an incoherent ancilla do not exceed the amount of coherence contained in the initial system. Our result provides a much tighter lower bound of coherence for the initial quantum state, and give an interesting chain of inequalities for coherence, quantum correlation and entanglement. We also strengthen the relations between quantum correlations and coherence.

Quantum metrology and estimation of Unruh effect

We study the quantum metrology for a pair of entangled Unruh-Dewitt detectors when one of them is accelerated and coupled to a massless scalar field. Comparing with previous schemes, our model requires only local interaction and avoids the use of cavities in the probe state preparation process. We show that the probe state preparation and the interaction between the accelerated detector and the external field have significant effects on the value of quantum Fisher information, correspondingly pose variable ultimate limit of precision in the estimation of Unruh effect. We find that the precision of the estimation can be improved by a larger effective coupling strength and a longer interaction time. Alternatively, the energy gap of the detector has a range that can provide us a better precision. Thus we may adjust those parameters and attain a higher precision in the estimation. We also find that an extremely high acceleration is not required in the quantum metrology process.

Irreversible degradation of quantum coherence under relativistic motion

We study the dynamics of quantum coherence under Unruh thermal noise and seek under which condition the coherence can be frozen in a relativistic setting. We find that the frozen condition is either (i) the initial state is prepared as a incoherence state, or (ii) the detectors have no interaction with the external field. That is to say, the decoherence of detectors' quantum state is irreversible under the influence of thermal noise induced by Unruh radiation. It is shown that quantum coherence approaches zero only in the limit of an infinite acceleration, while quantum entanglement could reduce to zero for a finite acceleration. It is also demonstrated that the robustness of quantum coherence is better than entanglement under the influence of the atom-field interaction for an extremely large acceleration. Therefore, quantum coherence is more robust than entanglement in an accelerating system and the coherence type quantum resources are more accessible for relativistic quantum information processing tasks.

Gaussian quantum steering and its asymmetry in curved spacetime

We study Gaussian quantum steering and its asymmetry in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole. We present a Gaussian channel description of quantum state evolution under the influence of the Hawking radiation. We find that thermal noise introduced by Hawking effect will destroy the steerability between an inertial observer Alice and an accelerated observer Bob who hovers outside the event horizon, while it generates steerability between Bob and a hypothetical observer anti-Bob inside the event horizon. Unlike entanglement behaviors in curved spacetime, here the steering from Alice to Bob suffers from a "sudden death" and the steering from anti-Bob to Bob experiences a "sudden birth" with increasing Hawking temperature. We also find that the Gaussian steering is always asymmetric and the maximum steering asymmetry cannot exceed $\ln 2$, which means the state never evolves to an extremal asymmetry state. Furthermore, we obtain the parameter settings that maximize steering asymmetry and find that (i) $s=arccosh(\frac{\cosh^2 r}{1-\sinh^2r})$ is the critical point of steering asymmetry, and (ii) the attainment of maximal steering asymmetry indicates the transition between one-way steerability and both-way steerability for the two-mode Gaussian state under the influence of Hawking radiation.

Entanglement Spectrum of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard Model

We investigate the entanglement spectrum of the ground state of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model. The topological phases of the model can be identified by degeneracy of the largest eigenvalues of entanglement spectrum. The study of the periodic boundary condition is enough to obtain the phase diagram of the model, without the consideration of the open boundary condition case. Physical interpretation about the bulk-edge correspondence in the entanglement spectrum is presented. The method of the entanglement spectrum can be applicable in studying other topological phases of matter.
