Teaching LLMs How ICU Physicians Approach Clinical Reasoning Through OMOP-Aligned Retrieval Improves Reasoning Across Clinical Domains

Clinical decision-making relies on identifying relevant patient information to guide diagnosis and treatment, a challenge that is especially difficult in the data-dense and rapidly changing intensive care unit (ICU). Large language models (LLMs) could support this task. However, existing applications and datasets mostly emphasize surface-level retrieval or factual recall rather than the inductive and deductive reasoning clinicians practice to select and reason over decision-relevant evidence. We hypothesized that training LLMs on expert ICU reasoning could yield clinical reasoning skills that generalize beyond critical care. Here we introduce ICU-REACT, a reasoning dataset developed with 19 clinicians through a clinician-in-the-loop framework to teach LLMs to perform information retrieval and context-aware clinical reasoning in the ICU. Using ICU-REACT, we fine-tuned Clin-REACT models spanning 8B-70B parameters and three model families. Across five clinical reasoning benchmarks, Clin-REACT consistently outperformed its backbone models and open-source general-purpose and medical LLMs. Gains extended to different tasks including script concordance tests, and downstream diagnosis and treatment tasks. These findings suggest that expert reasoning supervision in critical care can improve broader clinical reasoning, although prospective evaluation is needed before real-world clinical use.

High-Quality Exposure Correction with Diffusion-Based Image Generation Priors

Although most existing exposure correction methods achieve high fidelity, they often place excessive focus on overall pixel-wise accuracy, making it challenging to effectively model extreme exposure regions, which results in suboptimal perceptual quality. Recently, diffusion models have received significant attention due to their remarkable performance in the realm of image generation. However, their successful application to exposure correction remains a challenging and open question. The key challenge lies in generating accurate image structures and maintaining high image fidelity during stochastic diffusion processes. In this paper, we propose DPEC (Diffusion Prior-based Exposure Correction), a novel framework for image exposure correction that utilizes diffusion-based image generation priors encapsulated in pre-trained large-scale diffusion models. Specifically, we first propose an efficient fine-tuning strategy to derive an exposure corrector from pre-trained models, enabling the generation of enhanced images in a single-step denoising process. Moreover, we seamlessly combine the strengths of diffusion models and regression models, and design a joint cross-attention module to integrate multi-scale diffusion prior features, thereby effectively preserving high-frequency details and minimizing random artifacts. The diffusion model focuses on dealing with low-frequency content rather than all the intricate texture details. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DPEC method consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods on multiple exposure correction datasets, whether in terms of fidelity, perceptual quality, or visual effects.

Enhancing EHR Systems with data from wearables: An end-to-end Solution for monitoring post-Surgical Symptoms in older adults

Mobile health (mHealth) apps have gained popularity over the past decade for patient health monitoring, yet their potential for timely intervention is underutilized due to limited integration with electronic health records (EHR) systems. Current EHR systems lack real-time monitoring capabilities for symptoms, medication adherence, physical and social functions, and community integration. Existing systems typically rely on static, in-clinic measures rather than dynamic, real-time patient data. This highlights the need for automated, scalable, and human-centered platforms to integrate patient-generated health data (PGHD) within EHR. Incorporating PGHD in a user-friendly format can enhance patient symptom surveillance, ultimately improving care management and post-surgical outcomes. To address this barrier, we have developed an mHealth platform, ROAMM-EHR, to capture real-time sensor data and Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) using a smartwatch. The ROAMM-EHR platform can capture data from a consumer smartwatch, send captured data to a secure server, and display information within the Epic EHR system using a user-friendly interface, thus enabling healthcare providers to monitor post-surgical symptoms effectively.

MIPI 2024 Challenge on Few-shot RAW Image Denoising: Methods and Results

The increasing demand for computational photography and imaging on mobile platforms has led to the widespread development and integration of advanced image sensors with novel algorithms in camera systems. However, the scarcity of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). Building on the achievements of the previous MIPI Workshops held at ECCV 2022 and CVPR 2023, we introduce our third MIPI challenge including three tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, we summarize and review the Few-shot RAW Image Denoising track on MIPI 2024. In total, 165 participants were successfully registered, and 7 teams submitted results in the final testing phase. The developed solutions in this challenge achieved state-of-the-art erformance on Few-shot RAW Image Denoising. More details of this challenge and the link to the dataset can be found at https://mipichallenge.org/MIPI2024.

Video super-resolution is one of the most popular tasks on mobile devices, being widely used for an automatic improvement of low-bitrate and low-resolution video streams. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem, they are usually quite computationally demanding, demonstrating low FPS rates and power efficiency on mobile devices. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an end-to-end real-time video super-resolution solution for mobile NPUs optimized for low energy consumption. The participants were provided with the REDS training dataset containing video sequences for a 4X video upscaling task. The runtime and power efficiency of all models was evaluated on the powerful MediaTek Dimensity 9000 platform with a dedicated AI processing unit capable of accelerating floating-point and quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 500 FPS rate and 0.2 [Watt / 30 FPS] power consumption. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

ELSR: Extreme Low-Power Super Resolution Network For Mobile Devices

With the popularity of mobile devices, e.g., smartphone and wearable devices, lighter and faster model is crucial for the application of video super resolution. However, most previous lightweight models tend to concentrate on reducing lantency of model inference on desktop GPU, which may be not energy efficient in current mobile devices. In this paper, we proposed Extreme Low-Power Super Resolution (ELSR) network which only consumes a small amount of energy in mobile devices. Pretraining and finetuning methods are applied to boost the performance of the extremely tiny model. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves a excellent balance between restoration quality and power consumption. Finally, we achieve a competitive score of 90.9 with PSNR 27.34 dB and power 0.09 W/30FPS on the target MediaTek Dimensity 9000 plantform, ranking 1st place in the Mobile AI & AIM 2022 Real-Time Video Super-Resolution Challenge.
