Integrated Monostatic and Bistatic mmWave Sensing

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals provide attractive opportunities for sensing due to their inherent geometrical connections to physical propagation channels. Two common modalities used in mmWave sensing are monostatic and bistatic sensing, which are usually considered separately. By integrating these two modalities, information can be shared between them, leading to improved sensing performance. In this paper, we investigate the integration of monostatic and bistatic sensing in a 5G mmWave scenario, implement the extended Kalman-Poisson multi-Bernoulli sequential filters to solve the sensing problems, and propose a method to periodically fuse user states and maps from two sensing modalities.

Integrated Sensing and Communications with MIMO-OTFS

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for high-mobility communications. We propose a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system based on OTFS modulation. We begin by deriving new sensing and communication signal models for the proposed MIMO-OTFS ISAC system that explicitly capture inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) effects. We then develop a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) based multi-target detection and delay-Doppler-angle estimation algorithm for MIMO-OTFS radar sensing that can simultaneously mitigate and exploit ISI/ICI effects, to prevent target masking and surpass standard unambiguous detection limits in range/velocity. Moreover, considering two operational modes (search/track), we propose an adaptive MIMO-OTFS ISAC transmission strategy. For the search mode, we introduce the concept of delay-Doppler (DD) multiplexing, enabling omnidirectional probing of the environment and large virtual array at the OTFS radar receiver. For the track mode, we pursue a directional transmission approach and design an OTFS ISAC optimization algorithm in spatial and DD domains, seeking the optimal trade-off between radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and achievable rate. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensing algorithm and reveal valuable insights into OTFS ISAC trade-offs under varying communication channel characteristics.

Impact of Phase Noise on Uplink Cell-Free Massive MIMO OFDM

Cell-Free massive MIMO networks provide huge power gains and resolve inter-cell interference by coherent processing over a massive number of distributed instead of co-located antennas in access points (APs). Cost-efficient hardware is preferred but imperfect local oscillators in both APs and users introduce multiplicative phase noise (PN), which affects the phase coherence between APs and users even with centralized processing. In this paper, we first formulate the system model of a PN-impaired uplink Cell-Free massive MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing network, and then propose a PN-aware linear minimum mean square error channel estimator and derive a PN-impaired uplink spectral efficiency expression. Numerical results are used to quantify the spectral efficiency gain of the proposed channel estimator over alternative schemes for different receiving combiners.

Zero Access Points 3D Cooperative Positioning via RIS and Sidelink Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are expected to be a main component of future 6G networks, due to their capability to create a controllable wireless environment, and achieve extended coverage and improved localization accuracy. In this paper, we present a novel cooperative positioning use case of the RIS in mmWave frequencies, and show that in the presence of RIS, together with sidelink communications, localization with zero access points (APs) is possible. We show that multiple (at least three) half-duplex single-antenna user equipments (UEs) can cooperatively estimate their positions through device-to-device communications with a single RIS as an anchor without the need for any APs. We start by formulating a three-dimensional positioning problem with Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) derived for performance analysis. After that, we discuss the RIS profile design and the power allocation strategy between the UEs. Then, we propose low-complexity estimators for estimating the channel parameters and UEs' positions. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed estimators and RIS profiles in the considered scenario via extensive simulations and show that sub-meter level positioning accuracy can be achieved under multi-path propagation.

Multistatic Sensing of Passive Targets Using 6G Cellular Infrastructure

Sensing using cellular infrastructure may be one of the defining feature of sixth generation (6G) wireless systems. Wideband 6G communication channels operating at higher frequency bands (upper mmWave bands) are better modeled using clustered geometric channel models. In this paper, we propose methods for detection of passive targets and estimating their position using communication deployment without any assistance from the target. A novel AI architecture called CsiSenseNet is developed for this purpose. We analyze the resolution, coverage and position uncertainty for practical indoor deployments. Using the proposed method, we show that human sized target can be sensed with high accuracy and sub-meter positioning errors in a practical indoor deployment scenario.

Performance of RIS-Aided Nearfield Localization under Beams Approximation from Real Hardware Characterization

The technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) has been showing promising potential in a variety of applications relying on Beyond-5G networks. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can indeed provide fine channel flexibility to improve communication quality of service (QoS) or restore localization capabilities in challenging operating conditions, while conventional approaches fail (e.g., due to insufficient infrastructure, severe radio obstructions). In this paper, we tackle a general low-complexity approach for optimizing the precoders that control such reflective surfaces under hardware constraints. More specifically, it allows the approximation of any desired beam pattern using a pre-characterized look-up table of feasible complex reflection coefficients for each RIS element. The proposed method is first evaluated in terms of beam fidelity for several examples of RIS hardware prototypes. Then, by means of a theoretical bounds analysis, we examine the impact of RIS beams approximation on the performance of near-field downlink positioning in non-line-of-sight conditions, while considering several RIS phase profiles (incl. directional, random and localization-optimal designs). Simulation results in a canonical scenario illustrate how the introduced RIS profile optimization scheme can reliably produce the desired RIS beams under realistic hardware limitations. They also highlight its sensitivity to both the underlying hardware characteristics and the required beam kinds in relation to the specificity of RIS-aided localization applications.

Critical Zones for Comfortable Collision Avoidance with a Leading Vehicle

This paper provides a general framework for efficiently obtaining the appropriate intervention time for collision avoidance systems to just avoid a rear-end crash. The proposed framework incorporates a driver comfort model and a vehicle model. We show that there is a relationship between driver steering manoeuvres based on acceleration and jerk, and steering angle and steering angle rate profiles. We investigate how four different vehicle models influence the time when steering needs to be initiated to avoid a rear-end collision. The models assessed were: a dynamic bicycle model (DM), a steady-state cornering model (SSCM), a kinematic model (KM) and a point mass model (PMM). We show that all models can be described by a parameter-varying linear system. We provide three algorithms for steering that use a linear system to compute the intervention time efficiently for all four vehicle models. Two of the algorithms use backward reachability simulation and one uses forward simulation. Results show that the SSCM, KM and PMM do not accurately estimate the intervention time for a certain set of vehicle conditions. Due to its fast computation time, DM with a backward reachability algorithm can be used for rapid offline safety benefit assessment, while DM with a forward simulation algorithm is better suited for online real-time usage.

Experimental Validation of Single BS 5G mmWave Positioning and Mapping for Intelligent Transport

Positioning with 5G signals generally requires connection to several base stations (BSs), which makes positioning more demanding in terms of infrastructure than communications. To address this issue, there have been several theoretical studies on single BS positioning, leveraging high-resolution angle and delay estimation and multipath exploitation possibilities at mmWave frequencies. This paper presents the first realistic experimental validation of such studies, involving a commercial 5G mmWave BS and a user equipment (UE) development kit mounted on a test vehicle. We present the relevant signal models, signal processing methods (including channel parameter estimation and position estimation), and validate these based on real data collected in an outdoor science park environment. Our results indicate that positioning is possible, but the performance with a single BS is limited by the knowledge of the position and orientation of the infrastructure and the multipath visibility and diversity.

RIS-Enabled Smart Wireless Environments: Deployment Scenarios, Network Architecture, Bandwidth and Area of Influence

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute the key enabler for programmable electromagnetic propagation environments, and are lately being considered as a candidate physical-layer technology for the demanding connectivity, reliability, localization, and sustainability requirements of next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we first present the deployment scenarios for RIS-enabled smart wireless environments that have been recently designed within the ongoing European Union Horizon 2020 RISE-6G project, as well as a network architecture integrating RISs with existing standardized interfaces. We identify various RIS deployment strategies and sketch the core architectural requirements in terms of RIS control and signaling, depending on the RIS hardware architectures and respective capabilities. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss, with the aid of simulations and reflectarray measurements, two novel metrics that emerge in the context of RIS-empowered wireless systems: the RIS bandwidth and area of influence. Their extensive investigation corroborates the need for careful deployment and planning of the RIS technology in future networks.

RISs and Sidelink Communications in Smart Cities: The Key to Seamless Localization and Sensing

A smart city involves, among other elements, intelligent transportation, crowd monitoring, and digital twins, each of which requires information exchange via wireless communication links and localization of connected devices and passive objects (including people). Although localization and sensing (L&S) are envisioned as core functions of future communication systems, they have inherently different demands in terms of infrastructure compared to communications. Wireless communications generally requires a connection to only a single access point (AP), while L&S demand simultaneous line-of-sight propagation paths to several APs, which serve as location and orientation anchors. Hence, a smart city deployment optimized for communication will be insufficient to meet stringent L&S requirements. In this article, we argue that the emerging technologies of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and sidelink communications constitute the key to providing ubiquitous coverage for L&S in smart cities with low-cost and energy-efficient technical solutions. To this end, we propose and evaluate AP-coordinated and self-coordinated RIS-enabled L&S architectures and detail three groups of application scenarios, relying on low-complexity beacons, cooperative localization, and full-duplex transceivers. A list of practical issues and consequent open research challenges of the proposed L&S systems is also provided.

Misspecified Cramér-Rao Bound of RIS-aided Localization under Geometry Mismatch

In 5G/6G wireless systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can play a role as a passive anchor to enable and enhance localization in various scenarios. However, most existing RIS-aided localization works assume that the geometry of the RIS is perfectly known, which is not realistic in practice due to calibration errors. In this work, we derive the misspecified Cramér-Rao bound (MCRB) for a single-input-single-output RIS-aided localization system with RIS geometry mismatch. Specifically, unlike most existing works that use numerical methods, we propose a closed-form solution to the pseudo-true parameter determination problem for MCRB analysis. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the derived pseudo-true parameters and MCRB, and show that the RIS geometry mismatch causes performance saturation in the high signal-to-noise ratio regions.

Blind Channel Equalization Using Vector-Quantized Variational Autoencoders

State-of-the-art high-spectral-efficiency communication systems employ high-order modulation formats coupled with high symbol rates to accommodate the ever-growing demand for data rate-hungry applications. However, such systems are more vulnerable to linear and nonlinear transmission impairments, and it is important to mitigate the performance loss via digital signal processing. In this paper, we propose a novel machine learning approach for blind channel equalization and estimation using the vector quantized (VQ) \ac{VAE} framework. The proposed approach generalizes the applicability of the conventional \ac{VAE}-based equalizer to nonlinear systems employing high-order modulation formats by introducing a codebook component and an associated novel loss function. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method over a linear additive white Gaussian noise channel with intersymbol interference and two nonlinear scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve similar performance as a data aided equalizer using the \acf{MMSE} criterion, and outperforms the blind\ac{CMA} and the \ac{VAE}-based channel equalizer. Furthermore, we show that for the linear channel, the proposed scheme exhibits better convergence properties than the \ac{MMSE}-based, the \ac{CMA}-based, and the \ac{VAE}-based equalizers in terms of both convergence speed and robustness to variations in training batch size and learning rate.

Uplink Joint Positioning and Synchronization in Cell-Free Deployments with Radio Stripes

Radio stripes (RSs) is an emerging technology in beyond 5G and 6G wireless networks to support the deployment of cell-free architectures. In this paper, we investigate the potential use of RSs to enable joint positioning and synchronization in the uplink channel at sub-6 GHz bands. The considered scenario consists of a single-antenna user equipment (UE) that communicates with a network of multiple-antenna RSs distributed over a wide area. The UE is assumed to be unsynchronized to the RSs network, while individual RSs are time- and phase-synchronized. We formulate the problem of joint estimation of position, clock offset, and phase offset of the UE and derive the corresponding maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator, both with and without exploiting carrier phase information. To gain fundamental insights into the achievable performance, we also conduct a Fisher information analysis and inspect the theoretical lower bounds numerically. Simulation results demonstrate that promising positioning and synchronization performance can be obtained in cell-free architectures supported by RSs, revealing at the same time the benefits of carrier phase exploitation through phase-synchronized RSs.

A Projective Geometric View for 6D Pose Estimation in mmWave MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems in the 30--300 GHz bands are among the fundamental enabling technologies of 5G and beyond 5G, providing large bandwidths, not only for high data rate communication, but also for precise positioning services, in support of high accuracy demanding applications such as vehicle positioning. With the possibility to introduce relatively large arrays on user devices with a small footprint, the ability to determine the user orientation becomes unlocked. The estimation of the full user pose (joint 3D position and 3D orientation) is referred to as 6D localization. Conventionally, the problem of 6D localization using antenna arrays has been considered difficult and was solved through a combination of heuristics and optimization. In this paper, we reveal a close connection between the AoA and AoD and the well-studied perspective projection model from computer vision. This connection allows us to solve the 6D localization problem, by adapting state-of-the-art methods from computer vision. More specifically, two problems, namely 6D pose estimation from AoA from multiple single-antenna base stations and 6D SLAM based on single-BS mmWave communication, are first modeled with the perspective projection model, and then solved. Numerical simulations show that the proposed estimators operate close to the theoretical performance bounds. Moreover, the proposed SLAM method is effective even in the absence of the LoS path, or knowledge of the LoS/NLoS condition.

Rateless Autoencoder Codes: Trading off Decoding Delay and Reliability

Most of today's communication systems are designed to target reliable message recovery after receiving the entire encoded message (codeword). However, in many practical scenarios, the transmission process may be interrupted before receiving the complete codeword. This paper proposes a novel rateless autoencoder (AE)-based code design suitable for decoding the transmitted message before the noisy codeword is fully received. Using particular dropout strategies applied during the training process, rateless AE codes allow to trade off between decoding delay and reliability, providing a graceful improvement of the latter with each additionally received codeword symbol. The proposed rateless AEs significantly outperform the conventional AE designs for scenarios where it is desirable to trade off reliability for lower decoding delay.

ESPRIT-Oriented Precoder Design for mmWave Channel Estimation

We consider the problem of ESPRIT-oriented precoder design for beamspace angle-of-departure (AoD) estimation in downlink mmWave multiple-input single-output communications. Standard precoders (i.e., directional/sum beams) yield poor performance in AoD estimation, while Cramer-Rao bound-optimized precoders undermine the so-called shift invariance property (SIP) of ESPRIT. To tackle this issue, the problem of designing ESPRIT-oriented precoders is formulated to jointly optimize over the precoding matrix and the SIP-restoring matrix of ESPRIT. We develop an alternating optimization approach that updates these two matrices under unit-modulus constraints for analog beamforming architectures. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach while providing valuable insights on the beampatterns of the ESPRIT-oriented precoders.

Model-Driven End-to-End Learning for Integrated Sensing and Communication

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned to be one of the pillars of 6G. However, 6G is also expected to be severely affected by hardware impairments. Under such impairments, standard model-based approaches might fail if they do not capture the underlying reality. To this end, data-driven methods are an alternative to deal with cases where imperfections cannot be easily modeled. In this paper, we propose a model-driven learning architecture for joint single-target multi-input multi-output (MIMO) sensing and multi-input single-output (MISO) communication. We compare it with a standard neural network approach under complexity constraints. Results show that under hardware impairments, both learning methods yield better results than the model-based standard baseline. If complexity constraints are further introduced, model-driven learning outperforms the neural-network-based approach. Model-driven learning also shows better generalization performance for new unseen testing scenarios.

RIS-Enabled and Access-Point-Free Simultaneous Radio Localization and Mapping

In the upcoming sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces~(RISs) are regarded as one of the promising technological enablers, which can provide programmable signal propagation. Therefore, simultaneous radio localization and mapping(SLAM) with RISs appears as an emerging research direction within the 6G ecosystem. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of RIS-enabled radio SLAM for wireless operation without the intervention of access points (APs). We first design the RIS phase profiles leveraging prior information for the user equipment~(UE), such that they uniformly illuminate the angular sector where the UE is probabilistically located. Second, we modify the marginal Poisson multi-Bernoulli SLAM filter and estimate the UE state and landmarks, which enables efficient mapping of the radio propagation environment. Third, we derive the theoretical Cramér-Rao lower bounds on the estimators for the channel parameters and the UE state. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed method under scenarios with a limited number of transmissions, taking into account the channel coherence time. Our results demonstrate that the RIS enables solving the radio SLAM problem with zero APs, and that the consideration of the Doppler shift contributes to improving the UE speed estimates.
