Equilibrium shapes and faceting for ionic crystals of body-centered-cubic type

A mean field theory is developed for the calculation of the surface free energy of the staggered BCSOS, (or six vertex) model as function of the surface orientation and of temperature. The model approximately describes surfaces of crystals with nearest neighbor attractions and next nearest neighbor repulsions. The mean field free energy is calculated by expressing the model in terms of interacting directed walks on a lattice. The resulting equilibrium shape is very rich with facet boundaries and boundaries between reconstructed and unreconstructed regions which can be either sharp (first order) or smooth (continuous). In addition there are tricritical points where a smooth boundary changes into a sharp one and triple points where three sharp boundaries meet. Finally our numerical results strongly suggest the existence of conical points, at which tangent planes of a finite range of orientations all intersect each other. The thermal evolution of the equilibrium shape in this model shows strong similarity to that seen experimentally for ionic crystals.

Long-time-tail Effects on Lyapunov Exponents of a Random, Two-dimensional Field-driven Lorentz Gas

We study the Lyapunov exponents for a moving, charged particle in a two-dimensional Lorentz gas with randomly placed, non-overlapping hard disk scatterers placed in a thermostatted electric field, $\vec{E}$. The low density values of the Lyapunov exponents have been calculated with the use of an extended Lorentz-Boltzmann equation. In this paper we develop a method to extend these results to higher density, using the BBGKY hierarchy equations and extending them to include the additional variables needed for calculation of Lyapunov exponents. We then consider the effects of correlated collision sequences, due to the so-called ring events, on the Lyapunov exponents. For small values of the applied electric field, the ring terms lead to non-analytic, field dependent, contributions to both the positive and negative Lyapunov exponents which are of the form ${\tildeε}^{2} \ln\tildeε$, where $\tildeε$ is a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the applied field. We show that these non-analytic terms can be understood as resulting from the change in the collision frequency from its equilibrium value, due to the presence of the thermostatted field, and that the collision frequency also contains such non-analytic terms.

B. B. G. K. Y. Hierarchy Methods for Sums of Lyapunov Exponents for Dilute Gases

We consider a general method for computing the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents for moderately dense gases. This method is based upon hierarchy techniques used previously to derive the generalized Boltzmann equation for the time dependent spatial and velocity distribution functions for such systems. We extend the variables in the generalized Boltzmann equation to include a new set of quantities that describe the separation of trajectories in phase space needed for a calculation of the Lyapunov exponents. The method described here is especially suitable for calculating the sum of all of the positive Lyapunov exponents for the system, and may be applied to equilibrium as well as non-equilibrium situations. For low densities we obtain an extended Boltzmann equation, from which, under a simplifying approximation, we recover the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents for hard disk and hard sphere systems, obtained before by a simpler method. In addition we indicate how to improve these results by avoiding the simplifying approximation. The restriction to hard sphere systems in $d$-dimensions is made to keep the somewhat complicated formalism as clear as possible, but the method can be easily generalized to apply to gases of particles that interact with strong short range forces.

Networks of Steps on Au and Pt Crystals

Networks of steps, seen in STM observations of vicinal surfaces on Au and Pt (110), are analyzed. A simple model is introduced for the calculation of the free energy of the networks as function of the slope parameters, valid at low step densities. It predicts that the networks are unstable, or at least metastable, against faceting and gives an equilibrium crystal shape with sharp edges either between the (110) facet and rounded regions or between two rounded regions. Experimental observations of the equilibrium shapes of Au or Pt crystals at sufficiently low temperatures, i.e. below the deconstruction temperature of the (110) facet, could check the validity of these predictions.

A Transfer Matrix study of the staggered BCSOS model

The phase diagram of the staggered six vertex, or body centered solid on solid model, is investigated by transfer matrix and finite size scaling techniques. The phase diagram contains a critical region, bounded by a Kosterlitz-Thouless line, and a second order line describing a deconstruction transition. In part of the phase diagram the deconstruction line and the Kosterlitz-Thouless line approach each other without merging, while the deconstruction changes its critical behaviour from Ising-like to a different universality class. Our model has the same type of symmetries as some other two-dimensional models, such as the fully frustrated XY model, and may be important for understanding their phase behaviour. The thermal behaviour for weak staggering is intricate. It may be relevant for the description of surfaces of ionic crystals of CsCl structure.

Lyapunov Exponents and KS Entropy for the Lorentz Gas at Low Densities

The Lyapunov exponents and the KS entropy for a two dimensional Lorentz gas at low densities are defined for general non-equilibrium states and calculated with the use of a Lorentz-Boltzmann type equation. In equilibrium the density dependence of these quantities predicted by Krylov is recovered and explicit expressions are obtained. The relationship between the KS entropy, Lyapunov exponents, and escape rate, conjectured by Gaspard and Nicolis for non-equilibrium systems is confirmed and generalized.
