Numerical approach to the modular operator for fermionic systems

We numerically approximate the Tomita-Takesaki modular operator for local subalgebras of the 1+1-dimensional massive Majorana field. Our method works at the one-particle level with a discretisation of time-0 data in position space. The local subspaces we consider are associated with one double cone and with the disjoint union of two double cones. In order to avoid boundary effects, we primarily choose the overall spacetime to be a cylinder; different choices of boundary conditions (antiperiodic and periodic) are considered. We compare our numerical results to known analytic expressions in the massless case. It turns out that the modular operator has a non-trivial dependence on the mass. In the case of two double cones, the modular generator does not only have ''local'' contributions (supported on the diagonal in configuration space) but also ''bilocal'' terms (connecting the two double cone regions); we find the latter to be less prominent at higher masses, in line with expectations.

Quantum $L^p$ inequalities in thermal states

In thermal quantum field theory, the global Liouvillian (the generator of time translations) is passive. How is this reflected in the properties of its local density, a quantum field? We propose that the locally averaged density is bounded below, but not above, with respect to the noncommutative $L^4$ norm. This is analogous to the known quantum energy inequalities in the vacuum situation. Our examples include thermal equilibrium on Minkowski space, and the Unruh effect on the Rindler wedge, both for the real scalar free field.

Fermionic integrable models and graded Borchers triples

We provide an operator-algebraic construction of integrable models of quantum field theory on 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space with fermionic scattering states. These are obtained by a grading of the wedge-local fields or, alternatively, of the underlying Borchers triple defining the theory. This leads to a net of graded-local field algebras, of which the even part can be considered observable, although it is lacking Haag duality. Importantly, the nuclearity condition implying nontriviality of the local field algebras is independent of the grading, so that existing results on this technical question can be utilized. Application of Haag-Ruelle scattering theory confirms that the asymptotic particles are indeed fermionic. We also discuss connections with the form factor programme.

Quantum energy inequalities in integrable models with several particle species and bound states

We investigate lower bounds to the time-smeared energy density, so-called quantum energy inequalities (QEI), in the class of integrable models of quantum field theory. Our main results are a state-independent QEI for models with constant scattering function and a QEI at one-particle level for generic models. In the latter case, we classify the possible form of the stress-energy tensor from first principles and establish a link between the existence of QEIs and the large-rapidity asymptotics of the two-particle form factor of the energy density. Concrete examples include the Bullough-Dodd, the Federbush, and the $O(n)$-nonlinear sigma models.

On the mass dependence of the modular operator for a double cone

We present a numerical approximation scheme for the Tomita-Takesaki modular operator of local subalgebras in linear quantum fields, working at one-particle level. This is applied to the local subspaces for double cones in the vacuum sector of a massive scalar free field in (1 + 1)- and (3 + 1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, using a discretization of time-0 data in position space. In the case of a wedge region, one component of the modular generator is well-known to be a mass-independent multiplication operator; our results strongly suggest that for the double cone, the corresponding component is still at least close to a multiplication operator, but that it is dependent on mass and angular momentum.

Relative entropy of coherent states on general CCR algebras

For a subalgebra of a generic CCR algebra, we consider the relative entropy between a general (not necessarily pure) quasifree state and a coherent excitation thereof. We give a unified formula for this entropy in terms of single-particle modular data. Further, we investigate changes of the relative entropy along subalgebras arising from an increasing family of symplectic subspaces; here convexity of the entropy (as usually considered for the Quantum Null Energy Condition) is replaced with lower estimates for the second derivative, composed of "bulk terms" and "boundary terms". Our main assumption is that the subspaces are in differential modular position, a regularity condition that generalizes the usual notion of half-sided modular inclusions. We illustrate our results in relevant examples, including thermal states for the conformal $U(1)$-current.

High energy bounds on wave operators

The wave operators $W_\pm(H_1,H_0)$ of two selfadjoint operators $H_0$ and $H_1$ are analyzed at asymptotic spectral values. Sufficient conditions for $\|(W_\pm(H_1,H_0)-P_{1}^\mathrm{ac}P_{0}^\mathrm{ac})f(H_0)\| <\infty$ are given, where $P_{j}^\mathrm{ac}$ projects onto the subspace of absolutely continuous spectrum of $H_j$ and $f$ is an unbounded function ($f$-boundedness), both in the case of trace-class perturbations and in terms of the high-energy behaviour of the boundary values of the resolvent of $H_0$ (smooth method). Examples include $f$-boundedness for the perturbed polyharmonic operator and for Schrödinger operators with matrix-valued potentials. We discuss an application to the problem of quantum backflow.

Impossible measurements require impossible apparatus

A well-recognised open conceptual problem in relativistic quantum field theory concerns the relation between measurement and causality. Naive generalisations of quantum measurement rules can allow for superluminal signalling ('impossible measurements'). This raises the problem of delineating physically allowed quantum measurements and operations. We analyse this issue in a recently proposed framework in which local measurements (in possibly curved spacetime) are described physically by coupling the system to a probe. We show that the state-update rule in this setting is consistent with causality provided that the coupling between the system and probe is local. Thus, by establishing a well-defined framework for successive measurements, we also provide a class of physically allowed operations. Conversely, impossible measurements can only be performed using impossible (non-local) apparatus.

Towards an explicit construction of local observables in integrable quantum field theories

We present a new viewpoint on the construction of pointlike local fields in integrable models of quantum field theory. As usual, we define these local observables by their form factors; but rather than exhibiting their $n$-point functions and verifying the Wightman axioms, we aim to establish them as closed operators affiliated with a net of local von Neumann algebras, which is defined indirectly via wedge-local quantities. We also investigate whether these fields have the Reeh-Schlieder property, and in which sense they generate the net of algebras. Our investigation focuses on scalar models without bound states. We establish sufficient criteria for the existence of averaged fields as closable operators, and complete the construction in the specific case of the massive Ising model.

On the status of pointlike fields in integrable QFTs

In integrable models of quantum field theory, local fields are normally constructed by means of the bootstrap-formfactor program. However, the convergence of their $n$-point functions is unclear in this setting. An alternative approach uses fully convergent expressions for fields with weaker localization properties in spacelike wedges, and deduces existence of observables in bounded regions from there, but yields little information about their explicit form. We propose a new, hybrid construction: We aim to describe pointlike local quantum fields; but rather than exhibiting their $n$-point functions and verifying the Wightman axioms, we establish them as closed operators affiliated with a net of local von Neumann algebras that is known from the wedge-local approach. This is shown to work at least in the Ising model.

Quantum backflow and scattering

Backflow is the phenomenon that the probability current of a quantum particle on the line can flow in the direction opposite to its momentum. In this article, previous investigations of backflow, pertaining to interaction-free dynamics or purely kinematical aspects, are extended to scattering situations in short-range potentials. It is shown that backflow is a universal quantum effect which exists in any such potential, and is always of bounded spatial extent in a specific sense. The effects of reflection and transmission processes on backflow are investigated, both analytically for general potentials, and numerically in various concrete examples.

Negative energy densities in integrable quantum field theories at one-particle level

We study the phenomenon of negative energy densities in quantum field theories with self-interaction. Specifically, we consider a class of integrable models (including the sinh-Gordon model) in which we investigate the expectation value of the energy density in one-particle states. In this situation, we classify the possible form of the stress-energy tensor from first principles. We show that one-particle states with negative energy density generically exist in non-free situations, and we establish lower bounds for the energy density (quantum energy inequalities). Demanding that these inequalities hold reduces the ambiguity in the stress-energy tensor, in some situations fixing it uniquely. Numerical results for the lowest spectral value of the energy density allow us to demonstrate how negative energy densities depend on the coupling constant and on other model parameters.

Quantum Energy Inequality for the Massive Ising Model

A Quantum Energy Inequality (QEI) is derived for the massive Ising model, giving a state-independent lower bound on suitable averages of the energy density; the first QEI to be established for an interacting quantum field theory with nontrivial S-matrix. It is shown that the Ising model has one-particle states with locally negative energy densities, and that the energy density operator is not additive with respect to combination of one-particle states into multi-particle configurations.

Relativistische Materie in zwei Raum-Zeit-Dimensionen

Quantum field theory unifies concepts from quantum theory and from special relativity. Its mathematically rigorous description is quite intricate and is only partially understood; this is particularly true for the construction of operators corresponding to measurements at a space-time point or in a bounded space-time region. We explain this fact in simplified examples on 1+1 dimensional space-time, namely in so-called integrable models. We give a characterization of local operators by means of the analyticity properties of their coefficients in a certain series expansion. This also allows us to explicitly construct examples of local operators.

Characterization of local observables in integrable quantum field theories

Integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions have recently become amenable to a rigorous construction, but many questions about the structure of their local observables remain open. Our goal is to characterize these local observables in terms of their expansion coefficients in a series expansion by interacting annihilators and creators, similar to form factors. We establish a rigorous one-to-one characterization, where locality of an observable is reflected in analyticity properties of its expansion coefficients; this includes detailed information about the high-energy behaviour of the observable and the growth properties of the analytic functions. Our results hold for generic observables, not only smeared pointlike fields, and the characterizing conditions depend only on the localization region - we consider wedges and double cones - and on the permissible high energy behaviour.

An operator expansion for integrable quantum field theories

A large class of quantum field theories on 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space, namely, certain integrable models, has recently been constructed rigorously by Lechner. However, the construction is very abstract and the concrete form of local observables in these models remains largely unknown. Aiming for more insight into their structure, we establish a series expansion for observables, similar but not identical to the well-known form factor expansion. This expansion will be the basis for a characterization and explicit construction of local observables, to be discussed elsewhere. Here, we establish the expansion independent of the localization aspect, and analyze its behavior under space-time symmetries. We also clarify relations with deformation methods in quantum field theory, specifically, with the warped convolution in the sense of Buchholz and Summers.

Scaling limits of integrable quantum field theories

Short distance scaling limits of a class of integrable models on two-dimensional Minkowski space are considered in the algebraic framework of quantum field theory. Making use of the wedge-local quantum fields generating these models, it is shown that massless scaling limit theories exist, and decompose into (twisted) tensor products of chiral, translation-dilation covariant field theories. On the subspace which is generated from the vacuum by the observables localized in finite light ray intervals, this symmetry can be extended to the Möbius group. The structure of the interval-localized algebras in the chiral models is discussed in two explicit examples.

Quantum Inequalities from Operator Product Expansions

Quantum inequalities are lower bounds for local averages of quantum observables that have positive classical counterparts, such as the energy density or the Wick square. We establish such inequalities in general (possibly interacting) quantum field theories on Minkowski space, using nonperturbative techniques. Our main tool is a rigorous version of the operator product expansion.
