Green-Schwarz Mechanism for String Dualities

We determine the complete spacetime action to first order in $α'$ for the massless fields of bosonic string theory compactified on a $d$-dimensional torus. A fully systematic procedure is developed that brings the action into a minimal form in which all fields apart from the metric enter only with first-order derivatives. T-duality implies that this action must have a global $\mathrm{O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry, and we show that this requires a Green-Schwarz type mechanism for $α'$-deformed $\mathrm{O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ transformations. In terms of a frame formalism with ${\rm GL}(d)\times {\rm GL}(d)$ gauge symmetry this amounts to a modification of the three-form curvature by a Chern-Simons term for composite gauge fields.

${\mathcal{N}=(8,0)}$ AdS vacua of three-dimensional supergravity

We give a classification of fully supersymmetric chiral ${\cal N}=(8,0)$ AdS$_3$ vacua in general three-dimensional half-maximal gauged supergravities coupled to matter. These theories exhibit a wealth of supersymmetric vacua with background isometries given by the supergroups OSp$(8|2,\mathbb{R})$, F(4), SU$(4|1,1)$, and OSp$(4^*|4)$, respectively. We identify the associated embedding tensors and the structure of the associated gauge groups. We furthermore compute the mass spectra around these vacua. As an off-spin we include results for a number of ${\cal N}=(7,0)$ vacua with supergroups OSp$(7|2,\mathbb{R})$ and G$(3)$, respectively. We also comment on their possible higher-dimensional uplifts.

Consistent $S^3$ reductions of six-dimensional supergravity

We work out the consistent AdS$_3\times S^3$ truncations of the bosonic sectors of both the six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ and ${\cal N}=(2,0)$ supergravity theories. They result in inequivalent three-dimensional half-maximal ${\rm SO}(4)$ gauged supergravities describing 32 propagating bosonic degrees of freedom apart from the non-propagating supergravity multiplet. We present the full non-linear Kaluza-Klein reduction formulas and illustrate them by explicitly uplifting a number of AdS$_3$ vacua.

The many facets of exceptional field theory

Exceptional field theories are the manifestly duality covariant formulations of the target space theories of string/M-theory in the low-energy limit (supergravity) or for certain truncations. These theories feature a rich system of sub-theories, corresponding to different consistent truncations. We review the structure of exceptional field theory and elaborate on various potential applications. In particular, we discuss how exceptional field theories capture some of the the magic supergravity triangles, Hull's $*$-theories related to timelike dualities, as well as the generalized supergravities related to integrable deformations of AdS/CFT.

The dual graviton in duality covariant theories

We review (and elaborate on) the `dual graviton problem' in the context of duality covariant formulations of M-theory (exceptional field theories). These theories require fields that are interpreted as components of the dual graviton in order to build complete multiplets under the exceptional groups E$_{d(d)}$, $d=2,\ldots, 9$. Circumventing no-go arguments, consistent theories for such fields have been constructed by incorporating additional covariant compensator fields. The latter fields are needed for gauge invariance but also for on-shell equivalence with $D=11$ and type IIB supergravity. Moreover, these fields play a non-trivial role in generalized Scherk-Schwarz compactifications, as for instance in consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation on AdS$_4\times {\rm S}^7$.

Reviving 3D ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories

We present a Lagrangian formulation for ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories in three spacetime dimensions that is general enough to encompass infinite-dimensional gauge algebras that generally go beyond Lie algebras. To this end we employ Chern-Simons theories based on Leibniz algebras, which give rise to L$_{\infty}$ algebras and are defined on the dual space $\frak{g}^*$ of a Lie algebra $\frak{g}$ by means of an embedding tensor map $\vartheta :\frak{g}^*\rightarrow \frak{g}$. We show that for the Lie algebra $\frak{sdiff}_3$ of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on a 3-manifold there is a natural embedding tensor defining a Leibniz algebra on the space of one-forms. Specifically, we show that the cotangent bundle to any 3-manifold with a volume-form carries the structure of a (generalized) Courant algebroid. The resulting ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories are shown to be equivalent to Bandos-Townsend theories. We show that the theory based on $S^3$ is an infinite-dimensional generalization of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model that in turn is a consistent truncation of the full theory. We also review a Scherk-Schwarz reduction on $S^2\times S^1$, which gives the super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\frak{sdiff}_2$, and we construct massive deformations.

Higher Gauge Structures in Double and Exceptional Field Theory

We review the higher gauge symmetries in double and exceptional field theory from the viewpoint of an embedding tensor construction. This is based on a (typically infinite-dimensional) Lie algebra $\frak{g}$ and a choice of representation $R$. The embedding tensor is a map from the representation space $R$ into $\frak{g}$ satisfying a compatibility condition (`quadratic constraint'). The Lie algebra structure on $\frak{g}$ is transported to a Leibniz--Loday algebra on $R$, which in turn gives rise to an $L_{\infty}$-structure. We review how the gauge structures of double and exceptional field theory fit into this framework.

Leibniz-Chern-Simons Theory and Phases of Exceptional Field Theory

We discuss a generalization of Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions based on Leibniz (or Loday) algebras, which are generalizations of Lie algebras. Special cases of such theories appear in gauged supergravity, where the Leibniz algebra is defined in terms of the global (Lie) symmetry algebra of the ungauged limit and an embedding tensor. We show that the Leibniz algebra of generalized diffeomorphisms in exceptional field theory can similarly be obtained from a Lie algebra that describes the enhanced symmetry of an `ungauged phase' of the theory. Moreover, we show that a `topological phase' of ${\rm E}_{8(8)}$ exceptional field theory can be interpreted as a Chern-Simons theory for an algebra unifying the three-dimensional Poincaré algebra and the Leibniz algebra of ${\rm E}_{8(8)}$ generalized diffeomorphisms.

The 10d Uplift of the GPPZ Solution

We present the uplift of the GPPZ solution of the five-dimensional maximal supergravity to ten dimensions. The five dimensional solution involves two real scalar fields, with one of them encoding holographically the (norm of the complex) supersymmetric ${\mathcal N}=1$ mass deformation and the other the real part of the gaugino condensate. We embed this solution in a consistent truncation of $D=5$ maximal supergravity which involves two complex scalars dual to the complex mass deformations and the complex gaugino condensate, and a $U(1)$ gauge field dual to the $U(1)_R$ current, and uplift it to ten dimensions. The ten dimensional solution is completely explicit, with all fields given in terms of elementary functions. The metric and the axion-dilaton agree with those of a partial uplift of the GPPZ flow by Pilch and Warner. We analyze the asymptotics and the singularity structure of the ten dimensional solution. The uplifted solution is singular, but the singularity is milder than that of the five dimensional solution, and there is conformal frame in which the metric is only singular at one point of $S^5$. We compare the asymptotics of the $10d$ solution with that of the Polchinski-Strassler and Freedman-Minahan solutions, and find agreement with Freedman-Minahan and disagreement with Polchinski-Strassler. In particular, we infer that while the Polchinski-Strassler $10d$ fields satisfy the correct boundary conditions, they do not solve the field equations near the boundary.

Supersymmetric AdS$_7$ and AdS$_6$ vacua and their consistent truncations with vector multiplets

Using exceptional field theory we construct supersymmetric warped AdS$_7$ vacua of massive IIA and AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB, as well as their consistent truncations including vector multiplets. We show there are no consistent truncations of massive IIA supergravity around its supersymmetric AdS$_7$ vacua with vector multiplets when the Roman's mass is non-vanishing. For AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB supergravity, we find that in addition to the consistent truncation to pure $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA, the only other half-maximal truncations that are consistent result in $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA coupled to one or two Abelian vector multiplets, to three non-Abelian vector multiplets, leading to an $\mathrm{ISO}(3)$ gauged SUGRA, or to three non-Abelian plus one Abelian vector multiplet, leading to an $\mathrm{ISO}(3) \times \mathrm{U}(1)$ gauged SUGRA. These consistent truncations with vector multiplets exist when the two holomorphic functions that define the AdS$_6$ vacua satisfy certain differential conditions which we derive. We use these to deduce that no globally regular AdS$_6$ solutions admit a consistent truncation to $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA with two vector multiplets, and show that the Abelian T-dual of the Brandhuber-Oz vacuum allows a consistent truncation to $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA with a single vector multiplet.

E$_9$ exceptional field theory I. The potential

We construct the scalar potential for the exceptional field theory based on the affine symmetry group E$_9$. The fields appearing in this potential live formally on an infinite-dimensional extended spacetime and transform under E$_9$ generalised diffeomorphisms. In addition to the scalar fields expected from D=2 maximal supergravity, the invariance of the potential requires the introduction of new constrained scalar fields. Other essential ingredients in the construction include the Virasoro algebra and indecomposable representations of E$_9$. Upon solving the section constraint, the potential reproduces the dynamics of either eleven-dimensional or type IIB supergravity in the presence of two isometries.

E$_{7(7)}$ Exceptional Field Theory in Superspace

We formulate the locally supersymmetric E$_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory in a $(4+56|32)$ dimensional superspace, corresponding to a 4D $N\!=\!8$ "external" superspace augmented with an "internal" 56-dimensional space. This entails the unification of external diffeomorphisms and local supersymmetry transformations into superdiffeomorphisms. The solutions to the superspace Bianchi identities lead to on-shell duality equations for the $p$-form field strengths for $p\leq 4$. The reduction to component fields provides a complete description of the on-shell supersymmetric theory. As an application of our results, we perform a generalized Scherk-Schwarz reduction and obtain the superspace formulation of maximal gauged supergravity in four dimensions parametrized by an embedding tensor.

Generalised diffeomorphisms for E$_9$

We construct generalised diffeomorphisms for E$_9$ exceptional field theory. The transformations, which like in the E$_8$ case contain constrained local transformations, close when acting on fields. This is the first example of a generalised diffeomorphism algebra based on an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra and an infinite-dimensional coordinate module. As a byproduct, we give a simple generic expression for the invariant tensors used in any extended geometry. We perform a generalised Scherk--Schwarz reduction and verify that our transformations reproduce the structure of gauged supergravity in two dimensions. The results are valid also for other affine algebras.

Ten-dimensional origin of Minkowski vacua in ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity

Maximal supergravity in four dimensions admits two inequivalent dyonic gaugings of the group $\mathrm{SO}(4) \times \mathrm{SO}(2,2) \ltimes T^{16}$. Both admit a Minkowski vacuum with residual $\mathrm{SO}(4) \times \mathrm{SO}(2)^2$ symmetry and identical spectrum. We explore these vacua and their deformations. Using exceptional field theory, we show that the four-dimensional theories arise as consistent truncations from IIA and IIB supergravity, respectively, around a $\mathrm{Mink}_4\times S^3\times H^3$ geometry. The IIA/IIB truncations are efficiently related by an outer automorphism of $\mathrm{SL}(4) \subset \mathrm{E}_{7(7)}$. As an application, we give an explicit uplift of the moduli of the vacua into a 4-parameter family of ten-dimensional solutions.

O(d+1,d+1) enhanced double field theory

Double field theory yields a formulation of the low-energy effective action of bosonic string theory and half-maximal supergravities that is covariant under the T-duality group O$(d,d)$ emerging on a torus $T^d$. Upon reduction to three spacetime dimensions and dualisation of vector fields into scalars, the symmetry group is enhanced to O$(d+1,d+1)$. We construct an enhanced double field theory with internal coordinates in the adjoint representation of O$(d+1,d+1)$. Its section constraints admit two inequivalent solutions, encoding in particular the embedding of $D=6$ chiral and non-chiral theories, respectively. As an application we define consistent generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions using a novel notion of generalized parallelization. This allows us to prove the consistency of the truncations of $D=6$, ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ and $D=6$, ${\cal N}=(2,0)$ supergravity on AdS$_3\times \mathbb{S}^3$.

Type II origin of dyonic gaugings

Dyonic gaugings of four-dimensional supergravity typically exhibit a richer vacuum structure compared to their purely electric counterparts, but their higher-dimensional origin often remains more mysterious. We consider a class of dyonic gaugings with gauge groups of the type (SO(p,q)xSO(p',q'))$\ltimes N$ with $N$ nilpotent. Using generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions of exceptional field theory, we show how these four-dimensional gaugings may be consistently embedded in Type II supergravity upon compactification around products of spheres and hyperboloids. As an application, we give the explicit uplift of the N=4 AdS$_4$ vacuum of the theory with gauge group (SO(6)xSO(1,1))$\ltimes T^{12}$ into a supersymmetric AdS$_4$x$M_5$x$S^1$ S-fold solution of IIB supergravity. The internal space $M_5$ is a squashed $S^5$ preserving an SO(4)$ \subset $ SO(6) subset of its isometries.

Generalized IIB supergravity from exceptional field theory

The background underlying the $η$-deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$ sigma-model is known to satisfy a generalization of the IIB supergravity equations. Their solutions are related by T-duality to solutions of type IIA supergravity with non-isometric linear dilaton. We show how the generalized IIB supergravity equations can be naturally obtained from exceptional field theory. Within this manifestly duality covariant formulation of maximal supergravity, the generalized IIB supergravity equations emerge upon imposing on the fields a simple Scherk-Schwarz ansatz which respects the section constraint.
