Rational points of varieties with ample cotangent bundle over function fields of positive characteristic

Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $X$ be a scheme, which is smooth and projective over $K$. Suppose that the cotangent bundle $Ω_{X/K}$ is ample. Let $R:={\rm Zar}(X)(K)\cap X)$ be the Zariski closure of the set of all $K$-rational points of $X$, endowed with its reduced induced structure. We prove that there is a projective variety $X_0$ over $k$ and a finite and surjective $K^{\rm sep}$-morphism $X_{0,K^{\rm sep}}\to R_{K^{\rm sep}}$, which is birational when ${\rm char}(K)=0$.

Parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions and Atiyah extensions

Generalizing Atiyah extensions, we introduce and study differential abelian tensor categories over differential rings. By a differential ring, we mean a commutative ring with an action of a Lie ring by derivations. In particular, these derivations act on a differential category. A differential Tannakian theory is developed. The main application is to the Galois theory of linear differential equations with parameters. Namely, we show the existence of a parameterized Picard-Vessiot extension and, therefore, the Galois correspondence for many differential fields with, possibly, non-differentially closed fields of constants, that is, fields of functions of parameters. Other applications include a substantially simplified test for a system of linear differential equations with parameters to be isomonodromic, which will appear in a separate paper. This application is based on differential categories developed in the present paper, and not just differential algebraic groups and their representations.

Motivic Weight Complexes for Arithmetic Varieties

We associate weight complexes of (homological) motives, and hence Euler characteristics in the Grothendieck group of motives, to arithmetic varieties and Deligne-Mumford stacks; this extends the results in the paper "Descent, Motives and K-theory" in volume 478 of Crelle, where a similar result was proved for varieties over a field of characteristic zero. We use K_0-motives with rational coefficients, rather than Chow motives, because we cannot appeal to resolution of singularities, but rather must use de Jong's results. In addition, for varieties over a field we prove a general result on contravariance of weight complexes, in particular showing that any morphism of finite tor-dimension between varieties induces a morphism of weight complexes.

An Explicit Proof of the Generalized Gauss-Bonnet Formula

In this paper we construct an explicit representative for the Grothendieck fundamental class [Z] of a complex submanifold Z of a complex manifold X, under the assumption that Z is the zero locus of a real analytic section of a holomorphic vector bundle E. To this data we associate a super-connection A on the exterior algebra of E, which gives a "twisted resolution" of the structure sheaf of Z. The "generalized super-trace" of A^{2r}/r!, where r is the rank of E, is an explicit map of complexes from the twisted resolution to the Dolbeault complex of X, which represents [Z]. One may then read off the Gauss-Bonnet formula from this map of complexes.

Volumes of symmetric spaces via lattice points

In this paper we show how to use elementary methods to prove that the volume of Sl_k R / Sl_k Z is zeta(2) * zeta(3) * ... * zeta(k) / k. Using a version of reduction theory presented in this paper, we can compute the volumes of certain unbounded regions in Euclidean space by counting lattice points and then appeal to the machinery of Dirichlet series to get estimates of the growth rate of the number of lattice points appearing in the region as the lattice spacing decreases. We also present a proof of the closely related result that the Tamagawa number of Sl_k Q is 1 that is somewhat simpler and more arithmetic than Weil's. His proof proceeds by induction on k and appeals to the Poisson summation formula, whereas the proof here brings to the forefront local versions of the formula, one for each prime p, which help to illuminate the appearance of values of zeta functions in formulas for volumes.

Descent, Motives and K-theory

To an arbitrary variety over a field of characteristic zero, we associate a complex of Chow motives, which is, up to homotopy, unique and bounded. We deduce that any variety has a natural Euler characteristic in the Grothendieck group of Chow motives. We show that the cohomology with integer coefficients of any singular variety over the complex numbers has a natural weight filtration. We define algebraic K-theory with "compact supports".
