Non-existence and splitting theorems for normal integral bases

We establish new conditions that prevent the existence of (weak) normal integral bases in tame Galois extensions of number fields. This leads to the following result: under appropriate technical hypotheses, the existence of a normal integral basis in the upper layer of an abelian tower Q \subset K \subset L forces the tower to be split in a very strong sense.

On totally real Hilbert-Speiser Fields of type C_p

Let G be a finite abelian group. A number field K is called a Hilbert-Speiser field of type G if for every tame G-Galois extension L/K has a normal integral basis, i.e., the ring of integers O_L is free as an O_K[G]-module. Let C_p denote the cyclic group of prime order p. We show that if p >= 7 (or p=5 and extra conditions are met) and K is totally real with K/Q ramified at p, then K is not Hilbert-Speiser of type C_p.

Computing generators of free modules over orders in group algebras

Let E be a number field and G be a finite group. Let A be any O_E-order of full rank in the group algebra E[G] and X be a (left) A-lattice. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for X to be free of given rank d over A. In the case that the Wedderburn decomposition of E[G] is explicitly computable and each component is in fact a matrix ring over a field, this leads to an algorithm that either gives an A-basis for X or determines that no such basis exists. Let L/K be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G such that E is a subfield of K and put d=[K:E]. The algorithm can be applied to certain Galois modules that arise naturally in this situation. For example, one can take X to be O_L, the ring of algebraic integers of L, and A to be the associated order A of O_L in E[G]. The application of the algorithm to this special situation is implemented in Magma under certain extra hypotheses when K=E=Q.

Relative Galois module structure of rings of integers of absolutely Abelian number fields

Let L/K be an extension of number fields where L/\Q is abelian. We define such an extension to be Leopoldt if the ring of integers O_L of L is free over the associated order A_L/K. Furthermore we define an abelian number field K to be Leopoldt if every finite extension L/K with L/Q abelian is Leopoldt in the sense above. Previous results of Leopoldt, Chan & Lim, Bley, and Byott & Lettl culminate in the proof that the n-th cyclotomic field Q^(n) is Leopoldt for every n. In this paper, we generalize this result by giving more examples of Leopoldt extensions and fields, along with explicit generators.

On the trace map between absolutely abelian number fields of equal conductor

Let L/K be an extension of absolutely abelian number fields of equal conductor, n. The image of the ring of integers of L under the trace map from L to K is an ideal in the ring of integers in K. We compute the absolute norm of this ideal exactly for any such L/K, thereby sharpening an earlier result of Kurt Girstmair. Furthermore, we define an "adjusted trace map" that allows the proof of Leopoldt's Theorem to be reduced to the cyclotomic case.
