Near-Hagedorn Thermodynamics and Random Walks - Extensions and Examples

In this paper, we discuss several explicit examples of the results obtained in JHEP 1402 (2014) 127. We elaborate on the random walk picture in these spacetimes and how it is modified. Firstly we discuss the linear dilaton background. Then we analyze a previously studied toroidally compactified background where we determine the Hagedorn temperature and study the random walk picture. We continue with flat space orbifold models where we discuss boundary conditions for the thermal scalar. Finally, we study the general link between the quantum numbers in the fundamental domain and the strip and their role in thermodynamics.

Matrix product states for gauge field theories

The matrix product state formalism is used to simulate Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories. To this end, we define matrix product state manifolds which are manifestly gauge invariant. As an application, we study 1+1 dimensional one flavour quantum electrodynamics, also known as the massive Schwinger model, and are able to determine very accurately the ground state properties and elementary one-particle excitations in the continuum limit. In particular, a novel particle excitation in the form of a heavy vector boson is uncovered, compatible with the strong coupling expansion in the continuum. We also study non-equilibrium dynamics by simulating the real-time evolution of the system induced by a quench in the form of a uniform background electric field.

The Thermal Scalar and Random Walks in AdS3 and BTZ

We analyze near-Hagedorn thermodynamics of strings in the WZW $AdS_3$ model. We compute the thermal spectrum of all primaries and find the thermal scalar explicitly in the string spectrum using CFT twist techniques. Then we use the link to the Euclidean WZW BTZ black hole and write down the Euclidean BTZ spectrum. We give a Hamiltonian interpretation of the thermal partition function of angular orbifolds where we find a reappearance of discrete states that dominate the partition function. Using these results, we discuss the nature of the thermal scalar in the WZW BTZ model. As a slight generalization of the angular orbifolds, we discuss the $AdS_3$ string gas with a non-zero chemical potential corresponding to angular momentum around the spatial cigar. For this model as well, we determine the thermal spectrum and the Hagedorn temperature as a function of chemical potential. Finally the nature of $α'$ corrections to the $AdS_3$ thermal scalar action is analyzed and we find the random walk behavior of highly excited strings in this particular $AdS_3$ background.

Phonon spectrum of QCD vacuum in magnetic-field-induced superconducting phase

In the background of a sufficiently strong magnetic field the vacuum was suggested to become an ideal electric conductor (highly anisotropic superconductor) due to an interplay between the strong and electromagnetic forces. The superconducting ground state resembles an Abrikosov lattice state in an ordinary type--II superconductor: it is an inhomogeneous structure made of a (charged vector) quark-antiquark condensate pierced by vortices. In this paper the acoustic (phonon) vibrational modes of the vortex lattice are studied at zero temperature. Using an effective model based on a vector meson dominance, we show that in the infrared limit the longitudinal (transverse) acoustic vibrations of the vortex lattice possess a linear (quadratic) dispersion relation corresponding to type I (type II) Nambu--Goldstone modes.

Fermion zero modes in a chromomagnetic vortex lattice

We prove the existence of zero modes of massless quarks in a background of spaghetti vacuum of chromomagnetic vortices in QCD. We find a general solution for the zero modes and show that the modes can be localized at pairs of vortices.

On chromoelectric (super)conductivity of the Yang-Mills vacuum

We argue that in the Copenhagen (``spaghetti'') picture of the QCD vacuum the chromomagnetic flux tubes exhibit chromoelectric superconductivity. We show that the superconducting chromoelectric currents in the tubes may be induced by the topological charge density.

Effective dynamics of twisted and curved scroll waves using virtual filaments

Scroll waves are three-dimensional excitation patterns that rotate around a central filament curve; they occur in many physical, biological and chemical systems. We explicitly derive the equations of motion for scroll wave filaments in reaction-diffusion systems with isotropic diffusion up to third order in the filament's twist and curvature. The net drift components define at every instance of time a virtual filament which lies close to the instantaneous filament. Importantly, virtual filaments obey simpler, time-independent laws of motion which we analytically derive here and illustrate with numerical examples. Stability analysis of scroll waves is performed using virtual filaments, showing that filament curvature and twist add as quadratic terms to the nominal filament tension. Applications to oscillating chemical reactions and cardiac tissue are discussed.

Magnetic-field-induced superconductivity and superfluidity of W and Z bosons: in tandem transport and kaleidoscopic vortex states

We show that in a background of a sufficiently strong magnetic field the electroweak sector of the quantum vacuum exhibits superconducting and, unexpectedly, superfluid properties due to the magnetic-field-induced condensation of, respectively, W and Z bosons. The phase transition to the "tandem" superconductor-superfluid phase -- which is weakly sensitive to the Higgs sector of the standard model -- occurs at the critical magnetic field of 10^{20} T. The superconductor-superfluid phase of the electroweak vacuum has anisotropic transport properties as both charged and neutral superflows may propagate only along the magnetic field axis. The ground state possesses an unusual "kaleidoscopic" structure made of a hexagonal lattice of superfluid vortices superimposed on a triangular lattice of superconductor vortices.

Drift Laws for Spiral Waves on Curved Anisotropic Surfaces

Rotating spiral waves organize spatial patterns in chemical, physical and biological excitable systems. Factors affecting their dynamics such as spatiotemporal drift are of great interest for par- ticular applications. Here, we propose a quantitative description for spiral wave dynamics on curved surfaces which shows that for a wide class of systems, including the BZ reaction and anisotropic cardiac tissue, the Ricci curvature scalar of the surface is the main determinant of spiral wave drift. The theory provides explicit equations for spiral wave drift direction, drift velocity and the period of rotation. Depending on the parameters, the drift can be directed to the regions of either maximal or minimal Ricci scalar curvature, which was verified by direct numerical simulations.

Buckling of scroll waves

A scroll wave in a sufficiently thin layer of an excitable medium with negative filament tension can be stable nevertheless due to filament rigidity. Above a certain critical thickness of the medium, such scroll wave will have a tendency to deform into a buckled, precessing state. Experimentally this will be seen as meandering of the spiral wave on the surface, the amplitude of which grows with the thickness of the layer, until a break-up to scroll wave turbulence happens. We present a simplified theory for this phenomenon and illustrate it with numerical examples.

Spontaneous electromagnetic superconductivity and superfluidity of QCDxQED vacuum in strong magnetic field

It was recently shown that the vacuum in the background of a strong enough magnetic field may become an electromagnetic superconductor due to interplay between strong and electromagnetic forces. The superconducting ground state of the QCDxQED sector of the vacuum is associated with magnetic-field-assisted emergence of quark-antiquark condensates which carry quantum numbers of charged rho mesons (i.e., of electrically charged vector particles made of lightest, u and d, quarks and antiquarks). Here we demonstrate that this exotic electromagnetic superconductivity of vacuum is also accompanied by even more exotic superfluidity of the neutral rho mesons. The superfluid component -- despite being electrically neutral -- turns out to be sensitive to an external electric field as the superfluid may ballistically be accelerated by a test background electric field along the magnetic-field axis. In the ground state both superconducting and superfluid components are inhomogeneous periodic functions of the transversal (with respect to the axis of the magnetic field) spatial coordinates. The superconducting part of the ground state resembles an Abrikosov ground state in a type-II superconductor: the superconducting condensate organizes itself in periodic structure which possesses the symmetry of an equilateral triangular lattice. Each elementary lattice cell contains a stringlike topological defect (superconductor vortex) in the charged rho condensates as well as three superfluid vortices and three superfluid antivortices made of the neutral rho condensate. The superposition of the superconductor and superfluid vortex lattices has a complicated "kaleidoscopic" pattern.

Variational matrix product ansatz for dispersion relations

A variational ansatz for momentum eigenstates of translation invariant quantum spin chains is formulated. The matrix product state ansatz works directly in the thermodynamic limit and allows for an efficient implementation (cubic scaling in the bond dimension) of the variational principle. Unlike previous approaches, the ansatz includes topologically non-trivial states (kinks, domain walls) for systems with symmetry breaking. The method is benchmarked using the spin-1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet and the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and we obtain surprisingly accurate results.

Entanglement renormalization for quantum fields

It is shown how to construct renormalization group flows of quantum field theories in real space, as opposed to the usual Wilsonian approach in momentum space. This is achieved by generalizing the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz to continuum theories. The variational class of wavefunctions arising from this RG flow are translation invariant and exhibit an entropy-area law. We illustrate the construction for a free non-relativistic boson model, and argue that the full power of the construction should emerge in the case of interacting theories.

Time-dependent variational principle for quantum lattices

We develop a new algorithm based on the time-dependent variational principle applied to matrix product states to efficiently simulate the real- and imaginary time dynamics for infinite one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. This procedure: (1) is argued to be optimal; (2) does not rely on the Trotter decomposition and thus has no Trotter error; (3) explicitly preserves all symmetries and conservation laws; and (4) has low computational complexity. The algorithm is illustrated using both imaginary time and real-time examples.

Holographic study of rho meson mass in an external magnetic field: paving the road towards a magnetically induced superconducting QCD vacuum?

We study the rho meson mass in a uniform background magnetic field eB at zero temperature, in search of indications for the magnetically induced rho meson condensation, as predicted recently by Chernodub. The holographic model used is the Sakai-Sugimoto model with two flavours and a non-zero constituent quark mass. We fix the free holographic parameters by matching them to the phenomenological value for the constituent quark mass and the experimental values for the pion decay constant and the rho meson mass, this in absence of a magnetic field. In a first approximation, the Landau levels are recovered, indeed indicating an instability of the QCD vacuum at a critical magnetic field, eB_c ~ m_ρ^2, to a phase where rho mesons are condensed. We improve on this result by also taking into account the holographic analogue of chiral magnetic catalysis, numerically solving the mass eigenvalue equation for the rho meson, which depends on eB both explicitly and implicitly through the changed embedding of the flavour probe branes. This turns out to raise eB_c with a few percents. As a byproduct of our analysis we find that the separation between the chiral symmetry restoration temperature T_χ(eB) and the deconfinement temperature T_c is 3.2 percent at eB = 30 m_π^2 ~ 0.57 GeV^2.

Applying the variational principle to (1+1)-dimensional quantum field theories

We extend the recently introduced continuous matrix product state (cMPS) variational class to the setting of (1+1)-dimensional relativistic quantum field theories. This allows one to overcome the difficulties highlighted by Feynman concerning the variational procedure applied to relativistic theories, and provides a new way to regularize quantum field theories. A fermionic version of the continuous matrix product state is introduced which is manifestly free from fermion doubling and sign problems. We illustrate the power of the formalism with the simulation of free massive Dirac fermions, the Gross-Neveu model, and the Casimir effect. We find that cMPS can capture chiral symmetry breaking with absolute scaling of the chiral parameter, and that boundary effects can be accommodated with modest computational effort.

Minimally doubled chiral fermions with C, P and T symmetry on the staggered lattice

Recently, the interest in local lattice actions for chiral fermions has revived, with the proposition of new local actions in which only the minimal number of doublers appear. The trigger role of graphene having a minimally doubled, chirally invariant, Dirac-like excitation spectrum can not be neglected. The challenge is to construct an action which preserves enough symmetries to be useful in lattice gauge calculations. We present a new approach to obtain local lattice actions for fermions using a reinterpretation of the staggered lattice approach of Kogut and Susskind. This interpretation is based on the similarity with the staggered lattice approach in FDTD simulations of acoustics and electromagnetism. It allows us to construct a local action for chiral fermions which has all discrete symmetries and the minimal number of fermion flavors, but which is non-Hermitian in real space. However, we argue that this will not pose a threat to the usability of the theory.

The interplay between the condensate and instantons

Using the Local Composite Operator formalism, we analytically study the dimension two gluon condensate in the presence of instantons. We first use the dilute gas approximation and partially solve the infrared problem of instanton physics. In order to find quantitative results, however, we turn to an instanton liquid model, where we find a two-component picture of the condensate: one component comes from instantons, a second component is non-perturbatively generated by quantum fluctuations around the instantons.
