Neutron stars with Bogoliubov quark-meson coupling model

A quark-meson coupling model based on the quark model proposed by Bogoliubov for the description of the quark dynamics is developed and applied to the description of neutron stars. Starting from a su(3) symmetry approach, it is shown that this symmetry has to be broken in order to satisfy the constraints set by the hypernuclei and by neutron stars. The model is able to describe observations such as two solar mass stars or the radius of canonical neutron stars within the uncertainties presently accepted. If the optical potentials for $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons in symmetric nuclear matter at saturation obtained from laboratory measurements of hypernuclei properties are imposed the model predicts no strangeness inside neutron stars.

Spin polarization in high density quark matter under a strong external magnetic field

In high density quark matter under a strong external magnetic field, possible phases are investigated by using the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with tensor-type four-point interaction between quarks, as well as the axial-vector-type four-point interaction. In the tensor-type interaction under the strong external magnetic field, it is shown that a quark spin polarized phase is realized in all regions of the quark chemical potential under consideration within the lowest Landau level approximation. In the axial-vector-type interaction, it is also shown that the quark spin polarized phase appears in the wide range of the quark chemical potential. In both the interactions, the quark mass in zero and small chemical potential regions increases which indicates that the chiral symmetry breaking is enhanced, namely the magnetic catalysis occurs.

QMC approach based on the Bogoliubov independent quark model of the nucleon

The quark-meson coupling model due to Guichon is formulated on the basis of the independent quark model of the nucleon proposed by Bogoliubov and is applied to the phenomenological descriptions of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter. For symmetric matter, the model predicts, at saturation density, the incompressibility $K=335.17$ MeV, the quark effective mass $m_q^*=238.5$ MeV, and the effective nucleon mass $M^*= 0.76 M,$ where $M$ is the nucleon mass in vacuum. Neutron star massesabove two solar masses are obtained.

A quark-meson coupling model based on Bogoliubov's model of the nucleon

The quark-meson coupling model due to Guichon is formulated on the basis of the independent quark model of the nucleon proposed by Bogoliubov and is applied to a phenomenological description of symmetric nuclear matter. The model predicts, at saturation density, the compressibility $K=249$ MeV and the quark effective mass $m_q^*= 249.1$ MeV, {the effective nucleon mass being $M^*=747.3$ MeV}. The predicted nucleon mass radius is $r=0.93$ fm.

Ferromagnetic condensation in high density hadronic matter

We investigate the occurrence of a ferromagnetic phase transition in high density hadronic matter (e.g., in the interior of a neutron star). This could be induced by a four fermion interaction analogous to the one which is responsible for chiral symmetry breaking in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, to which it is related through a Fierz transformation. Flavor SU(2) and flavor SU(3) quark matter are considered. A second order phase transition is predicted at densities about 5 times the normal nuclear matter density, a magnetization of the order of $10^{16}$ gauss being expected. It is also found that in flavor SU(3) quark matter, a first order transition from the so-called 2 flavor super-conducting (2SC) phase to the ferromagnetic phase arises. The color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase may be completely hidden by the ferromagnetic phase.

BCS theory of hadronic matter at high densities

The equilibrium between the so-called 2SC and CFL phases of strange quark matter at high densities is investigated in the framework of a simple schematic model of the NJL type. Equal densities are assumed for quarks $u,d$ and $s$. The 2SC phase is here described by a color-flavor symmetric state, in which the quark numbers are independent of the color-flavor combination. In the CFL phase the quark numbers depend on the color-flavor combination, that is, the number of quarks associated with the color-flavor combinations $ur,dg,sb$ is different from the number of quarks associated with the color flavor combinations $ug,ub,dr,db,sr,sg$. We find that the 2SC phase is stable for a chemical potential $μ$ below $μ_c=0.505$ GeV, while the CFL phase is stable above, the equilibrium pressure being $P_c=0.003$ GeV$^4$. We have used a 3-momentum regularizing cutoff $Λ=0.8$ GeV, which is somewhat larger than is usual in NJL type models. This should be adequate if the relevant chemical potential does not exceed 0.6 GeV.

Color symmetrical superconductivity in a schematic nuclear quark model

In this note, a novel BCS-type formalism is constructed in the framework of a schematic QCD inspired quark model, having in mind the description of color symmetrical superconducting states. The physical properties of the BCS vacuum (average numbers of quarks of different colors) remain unchanged under an arbitrary color rotation. In the usual approach to color superconductivity, the pairing correlations affect only the quasi-particle states of two colors, the single particle states of the third color remaining unaffected by the pairing correlations. In the theory of color symmetrical superconductivity here proposed, the pairing correlations affect symmetrically the quasi-particle states of the three colors and vanishing net color-charge is automatically insured. It is found that the groundstate energy of the color symmetrical sector of the Bonn model is well approximated by the average energy of the color symmetrical superconducting state proposed here.

Color symmetric superconductivity in a phenomenological QCD model

In this paper, we construct a theory of the NJL-type where superconductivity is present, and yet the super-conducting state remains, in the average, color symmetric. This shows that the present approach to color superconductivity is consistent with color singlet-ness. Indeed, quarks are free in the deconfined phase, but the deconfined phase itself is believed to be a color singlet. The usual description of the color superconducting state violates color singlet-ness. On the other hand, the color superconducting state here proposed, is color symmetric in the sense that an arbitrary color rotation leads to an equivalent state, with precisely the same physical properties.

Nuclear phenomena derived from quark-gluon strings

We propose a QCD based many-body model for the nucleus where the strong coupling regime is controlled by a three body string force and the weak coupling regime is dominated by a pairing force. This model operates effectively with a quark-gluon Lagrangian containing a pairing force from instantons and a baryonic string term which contains a confining potential. The unified model for weak and strong coupling regimes, is, however, only consistent at the border of perturbative QCD. The baryonic string force is necessary, as a {stability and} compressibility analysis shows, for the occurrence of the phases of nuclear matter. The model exhibits a quark deconfinement transition and chiral restoration which are suggested by QCD and give qualitatively correct numerics. The effective model is shown to be isomorphic to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and exhibits the correct chirality provided that the chiral fields are identified with the 2-particle strings, which are natural in a QCD framework

Solitons on H-bonds in proteins

A model for soliton dynamics on a hydrogen-bond network in helical proteins is proposed. It employs in three dimensions the formalism of fully integrable Toda lattices which admits phonons as well as solitons along the hydrogen-bonds of the helices. A simulation of the three dimensional Toda lattice system shows that the solitons are spontaneously created and are stable and moving along the helix axis. A perturbation on one of the three H-bond lines forms solitons on the other H-bonds as well. The robust solitary wave may explain very long-lived modes in the frequency range of 100 cm$^{-1}$ which are found in recent X-ray laser experiments. The dynamics parameters of the Toda lattice are in accordance with the usual Lennard-Jones parameters used for realistic H-bond potentials in proteins.

Threshold Disorder as a Source of Diverse and Complex Behavior in Random Nets

We study the diversity of complex spatio-temporal patterns in the behavior of random synchronous asymmetric neural networks (RSANNs). Special attention is given to the impact of disordered threshold values on limit-cycle diversity and limit-cycle complexity in RSANNs which have `normal' thresholds by default. Surprisingly, RSANNs exhibit only a small repertoire of rather complex limit-cycle patterns when all parameters are fixed. This repertoire of complex patterns is also rather stable with respect to small parameter changes. These two unexpected results may generalize to the study of other complex systems. In order to reach beyond this seemingly-disabling `stable and small' aspect of the limit-cycle repertoire of RSANNs, we have found that if an RSANN has threshold disorder above a critical level, then there is a rapid increase of the size of the repertoire of patterns. The repertoire size initially follows a power-law function of the magnitude of the threshold disorder. As the disorder increases further, the limit-cycle patterns themselves become simpler until at a second critical level most of the limit cycles become simple fixed points. Nonetheless, for moderate changes in the threshold parameters, RSANNs are found to display specific features of behavior desired for rapidly-responding processing systems: accessibility to a large set of complex patterns.

Threshold Noise as a Source of Volatility in Random Synchronous Asymmetric Neural Networks

We study the diversity of complex spatio-temporal patterns of random synchronous asymmetric neural networks (RSANNs). Specifically, we investigate the impact of noisy thresholds on network performance and find that there is a narrow and interesting region of noise parameters where RSANNs display specific features of behavior desired for rapidly `thinking' systems: accessibility to a large set of distinct, complex patterns.
