On importance sampling with mixtures for random walks with heavy tails

Importance sampling algorithms for heavy-tailed random walks are considered. Using a specification with algorithms based on mixtures of the original distribution with some other distribution, sufficient conditions for obtaining bounded relative error are presented. It is proved that mixture algorithms of this kind can achieve asymptotically optimal relative error. Some examples of mixture algorithms are presented, including mixture algorithms using a scaling of the original distribution, and the bounds of the relative errors are calculated. The algorithms are evaluated numerically in a simple setting.

Efficient calculation of risk measures by importance sampling -- the heavy tailed case

Computation of extreme quantiles and tail-based risk measures using standard Monte Carlo simulation can be inefficient. A method to speed up computations is provided by importance sampling. We show that importance sampling algorithms, designed for efficient tail probability estimation, can significantly improve Monte Carlo estimators of tail-based risk measures. In the heavy-tailed setting, when the random variable of interest has a regularly varying distribution, we provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic relative error of importance sampling estimators of risk measures, such as Value-at-Risk and expected shortfall, to be small. The results are illustrated by some numerical examples.

Large deviations for point processes based on stationary sequences with heavy tails

In this paper we propose a framework that enables the study of large deviations for point processes based on stationary sequences with regularly varying tails. This framework allows us to keep track not of the magnitude of the extreme values of a process, but also of the order in which these extreme values appear. Particular emphasis is put on (infinite) linear processes with random coefficients. The proposed framework provide a rather complete description of the joint asymptotic behavior of the large values of the stationary sequence. We apply the general result on large deviations for point processes to derive the asymptotic decay of partial sum processes as well as ruin probabilities.

Tail probabilities for infinite series of regularly varying random vectors

A random vector $X$ with representation $X=\sum_{j\geq0}A_jZ_j$ is considered. Here, $(Z_j)$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random vectors and $(A_j)$ is a sequence of random matrices, `predictable' with respect to the sequence $(Z_j)$. The distribution of $Z_1$ is assumed to be multivariate regular varying. Moment conditions on the matrices $(A_j)$ are determined under which the distribution of $X$ is regularly varying and, in fact, `inherits' its regular variation from that of the $(Z_j)$'s. We compute the associated limiting measure. Examples include linear processes, random coefficient linear processes such as stochastic recurrence equations, random sums and stochastic integrals.

Ruin probabilities under general investments and heavy-tailed claims

In this paper we study the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities for an insurance company that faces heavy-tailed claims, uses predictable investment strategies and makes investments in risky assets whose prices evolve according to quite general semimartingales. We show that the ruin problem corresponds to determining hitting probabilities for the solution to a randomly perturbed stochastic integral equation. We derive a large deviation result for the hitting probabilities that holds uniformly over a family of semimartingales and show that this result gives the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities under arbitrary investment strategies, including optimal investment strategies.

Extremal behavior of stochastic integrals driven by regularly varying Lévy processes

We study the extremal behavior of a stochastic integral driven by a multivariate Lévy process that is regularly varying with index $α>0$. For predictable integrands with a finite $(α+δ)$-moment, for some $δ>0$, we show that the extremal behavior of the stochastic integral is due to one big jump of the driving Lévy process and we determine its limit measure associated with regular variation on the space of càdlàg functions.

Functional large deviations for multivariate regularly varying random walks

We extend classical results by A. V. Nagaev [Izv. Akad. Nauk UzSSR Ser. Fiz.--Mat. Nauk 6 (1969) 17--22, Theory Probab. Appl. 14 (1969) 51--64, 193--208] on large deviations for sums of i.i.d. regularly varying random variables to partial sum processes of i.i.d. regularly varying vectors. The results are stated in terms of a heavy-tailed large deviation principle on the space of càdlàg functions. We illustrate how these results can be applied to functionals of the partial sum process, including ruin probabilities for multivariate random walks and long strange segments. These results make precise the idea of heavy-tailed large deviation heuristics: in an asymptotic sense, only the largest step contributes to the extremal behavior of a multivariate random walk.
