Homogenization of the boundary value for the Dirichlet Problem

In this paper, we give a mathematically rigorous proof of the averaging behavior of oscillatory surface integrals. Based on ergodic theory, we find a sharp geometric condition which we call irrational direction dense condition, abbreviated as IDDC, under which the averaging takes place. It should be stressed that IDDC does not imply any control on the curvature of the given surface. As an application, we prove homogenization for elliptic systems with Dirichlet boundary data, in $C^1$-domains.

Two- and Multi-phase Quadrature Surfaces

In this paper we shall initiate the study of the two- and multi-phase quadrature surfaces (QS), which amounts to a two/multi-phase free boundary problems of Bernoulli type. The problem is studied mostly from a potential theoretic point of view that (for two-phase case) relates to integral representation $$ \int_{\partial Ω^+} g h (x) \ dσ_x - \int_{\partial Ω^-} g h (x) \ dσ_x= \int h dμ\ , $$ where $dσ_x$ is the surface measure, $μ= μ^+ - μ^-$ is given measure with support in (a priori unknown domain) $Ω$, $g$ is a given smooth positive function, and the integral holds for all functions $h$, which are harmonic on $\overline Ω$. Our approach is based on minimization of the corresponding two- and multi-phase functional and the use of its one-phase version as a barrier. We prove several results concerning existence, qualitative behavior, and regularity theory for solutions. A central result in our study states that three or more junction points do not appear.

A minimization problem with free boundary related to a cooperative system

We study the minimum problem for the functional $\int_Ω\bigl( \vert \nabla \mathbf{u} \vert^{2} + Q^{2}χ_{\{\vert \mathbf{u}\vert>0\}} \bigr)dx$ with the constraint $u_i\geq 0$ for $i=1,\cdots,m$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ is a bounded domain and $\mathbf{u}=(u_1,\cdots,u_m)\in H^{1}(Ω;\mathbb{R}^{m})$. Using an array of technical tools, from geometric analysis for the free boundaries, we reduce the problem to its scalar counterpart and hence conclude similar results as that of scalar problem. This can also be seen as the most novel part of the paper, that possibly can lead to further developments of free boundary regularity for systems.

An Elliptic Free Boundary Arising From the Jump of Conductivity

In this paper we consider a quasilinear elliptic PDE, $\text{div} (A(x,u) \nabla u) =0$, where the underlying physical problem gives rise to a jump for the conductivity $A(x,u)$, across a level surface for $u$. Our analysis concerns Lipschitz regularity for the solution $u$, and the regularity of the level surfaces, where $A(x,u)$ has a jump and the solution $u$ does not degenerate. In proving Lipschitz regularity of solutions, we introduce a new and unexpected type of ACF-monotonicity formula with two different operators, that might be of independent interest, and surely can be applied in other related situations. The proof of the monotonicity formula is done through careful computations, and (as a byproduct) a slight generalization to a specific type of variable matrix-valued conductivity is presented.

Multi-phase Quadrature domains and a related minimization problem

In this paper we introduce the multi-phase version of the so-called Quadrature Domains (QD), which refers to a generalized type of mean value property for harmonic functions. The well-established and developed theory of one-phase QD was recently generalized to a two-phase version, by one of the current authors (in collaboration). Here we introduce the concept of the multi-phase version of the problem, and prove existence as well as several properties of such solutions. In particular, we discuss possibilities of multi-junction points.

$L^2$-estimates for singular oscillatory integral operators

In this note we study singular oscillatory integrals with linear phase function over hypersurfaces which may oscillate, and prove estimates of $L^2 \mapsto L^2$ type for the operator, as well as for the corresponding maximal function. If the hypersurface is flat, we consider a particular class of a nonlinear phase functions, and apply our analysis to the eigenvalue problem associated with the Helmholtz equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Optimal regularity for the obstacle problem for the $p$-Laplacian

In this paper we discuss the obstacle problem for the $p$-Laplace operator. We prove optimal growth results for the solution. Of particular interest is the point-wise regularity of the solution at free boundary points. The most surprising result we prove is the one for the $p$-obstacle problem: Find the smallest $u$ such that $$ \hbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) \leq 0, \qquad u\geq ϕ, \qquad \hbox{in } B_1, $$ with $ϕ\in C^{1,1}(B_1)$ and given boundary datum on $\partial B_1$. We prove that the solution is uniformly $C^{1,1}$ at free boundary points. Similar results are obtained in the case of an inhomogeneity belonging to $L^\infty$. When applied to the corresponding parabolic problem, these results imply that any solution which is Lipschitz in time is $C^{1,\frac{1}{p-1}}$ in the spatial variables.

Hopf's lemma for a class of singular/degenerate PDE-s

This paper concerns Hopf's boundary point lemma, in certain $C^{1,Dini}$-type domains, for a class of singular/degenerate PDE-s, including $p$-Laplacian. Using geometric properties of levels sets for harmonic functions in convex rings, we construct sub-solutions to our equations that play the role of a barrier from below. By comparison principle we then conclude Hopf's lemma.

Equilibrium points of a singular cooperative system with free boundary

In this paper we initiate the study of maps minimising the energy $$ \int_{D} (|\nabla \u|^2+2|\u|)\ dx. $$ which, due to Lipschitz character of the integrand, gives rise to the singular Euler equations $$ Δ\u=\frac{\u}{|\u|}χ_{\left\lbrace |\u|>0\right\rbrace}, \qquad \u = (u_1, \cdots, u_m) \ . $$ Our primary goal in this paper is to set up a road map for future developments of the theory related to such energy minimising maps. Our results here concern regularity of the solution as well as that of the free boundary. They are achieved by using monotonicity formulas and epiperimetric inequalities, in combination with geometric analysis.

Applications of Fourier analysis in homogenization of Dirichlet problem I. Pointwise Estimates

In this paper we prove convergence results for homogenization problem for solutions of partial differential system with rapidly oscillating Dirichlet data. Our method is based on analysis of oscillatory integrals. In the uniformly convex and smooth domain, and smooth operator and boundary data, we prove pointwise convergence results, namely $$|u_{\e}(x)-u_0 (x)| \leq C_κ \e^{(d-1)/2}\frac{1}{d(x)^κ}, \ \forall x\in D, \ \forall \ κ>d-1,$$ where $u_{\e}$ and $u_0$ are solutions of respectively oscillating and homogenized Dirichlet problems, and $d(x)$ is the distance of $x$ from the boundary of $D$. As a corollary for all $1\leq p <\infty$ we obtain $L^p$ convergence rate as well.

Applications of Fourier analysis in homogenization of Dirichlet problem II. $L^p$ estimates

Let $u_\e$ be a solution to the system $$ \mathrm{div}(A_\e(x) \nabla u_{\e}(x))=0 \text{\ in} D, \qquad u_{\e}(x)=g(x,x/\e) \text{\ on}\partial D, $$ where $D \subset \R^d $ ($d \geq 2$), is a smooth uniformly convex domain, and $g$ is 1-periodic in its second variable, and both $A_\e$ and $g$ reasonably smooth. Our results in this paper are two folds. First we prove $L^p$ convergence results for solutions of the above system, for non-oscillating operator, $A_\e(x) =A(x)$, with the following convergence rate for all $1\leq p <\infty$ $$ \|u_\e - u_0\|_{L^p(D)} \leq C_p \begin{cases} \e^{1/2p} ,&\text{$d=2$}, (\e |\ln \e |)^{1/p}, &\text{$d = 3$}, \e^{1/p} ,&\text{$d \geq 4$,} \end{cases} $$ which we prove is (generically) sharp for $d\geq 4$. Here $u_0$ is the solution to the averaging problem. Second, combining our method with the recent results due to Kenig, Lin and Shen \cite{KLS1}, we prove (for certain class of operators and when $d\geq 3$) $$ || u_\e - u_0 ||_{L^p(D)} \leq C_p [ \e (\ln(1/ \e))^2 ]^{1/p}. $$ for both oscillating operator and boundary data. For this case, we take $A_\e=A(x/\e)$, where $A$ is 1-periodic as well. Some further applications of the method to the homogenization of Neumann problem with oscillating boundary data are also considered.

Analysis of a free boundary at contact points with Lipschitz data

In this paper we consider a minimization problem for the functional $$ J(u)=\int_{B_1^+}|\nabla u|\sp 2+λ_{+}^2χ_{\{u>0\}}+λ_{-}^2χ_{\{u\leq0\}}, $$ in the upper half ball $B_1^+\subset\R^n, n\geq 2$ subject to a Lipschitz continuous Dirichlet data on $\partial B_1^+$. More precisely we assume that $0\in \partial \{u>0\}$ and the derivative of the boundary data has a jump discontinuity. If $0\in \bar{\partial(\{u>0\} \cap B_1^+)}$ then (for $n=2$ or $n>3$ and one-phase case) we prove, among other things, that the free boundary $\partial \{u>0\}$ approaches the origin along one of the two possible planes given by $$ γx_1 = \pm x_2, $$ where $γ$ is an explicit constant given by the boundary data and $λ_\pm$ the constants seen in the definition of $J(u)$. Moreover the speed of the approach to $γx_1=x_2$ is uniform.

A general class of free boundary problems for fully nonlinear parabolic equations

In this paper we consider the fully nonlinear parabolic free boundary problem $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} F(D^2u) -\partial_t u=1 & \text{a.e. in}Q_1 \cap Ω\\ |D^2 u| + |\partial_t u| \leq K & \text{a.e. in}Q_1\setminusΩ, \end{array} \right. $$ where $K>0$ is a positive constant, and $Ω$ is an (unknown) open set. Our main result is the optimal regularity for solutions to this problem: namely, we prove that $W_x^{2,n} \cap W_t^{1,n} $ solutions are locally $C_x^{1,1}\cap C_t^{0,1} $ inside $Q_1$. A key starting point for this result is a new BMO-type estimate which extends to the parabolic setting the main result in \cite{CH}. Once optimal regularity for $u$ is obtained, we also show regularity for the free boundary $\partialΩ\cap Q_1$ under the extra condition that $Ω\supset \{u \neq 0 \}$, and a uniform thickness assumption on the coincidence set $\{u = 0 \}$,

Applications of Fourier analysis in homogenization of Dirichlet problem III: Polygonal Domains

In this paper we prove convergence results for the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem with rapidly oscillating boundary data in convex polygonal domains. Our analysis is based on integral representation of solutions. Under a certain Diophantine condition on the boundary of the domain and smooth coefficients we prove pointwise, as well as $L^p$ convergence results. For larger exponents $p$ we prove that the $L^p$ convergence rate is close to optimal. We shall also suggest several directions of possible generalization of the result in this paper.

Optimal Regularity for the parabolic No-Sign Obstacle Problem

We study the parabolic free boundary problem of obstacle type $$ \lap u-\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}= fχ_{u\ne 0}. $$ Under the condition that $f=Hv$ for some function $v$ with bounded second order spatial derivatives and bounded first order time derivative, we establish the same regularity for the solution $u$. Both the regularity and the assumptions are optimal. Using this result and assuming that $f$ is Dini continuous, we prove that the free boundary is, near so called low energy points, a $C^1$ graph. Our result completes the theory for this type of problems for the heat operator.

A discrete Bernoulli free boundary problem

We consider a free boundary problem for the $p$-Laplace operator which is related to the so-called Bernoulli free boundary problem. In this formulation, the classical boundary gradient condition is replaced by a condition on the distance between two different level surfaces of the solution. For suitable scalings our model converges to the classical Bernoulli problem; one of the advantages in this new formulation lies in the simplicity of the arguments, since one does not need to consider the boundary gradient. We shall study this problem in convex and other regimes, and establish existence and qualitative theory.
