Ricci-flat string algebroids

We investigate geometric structures defined by 4-forms, encompassing important classes of geometric structures with torsion including almost Hermitian, $\mathrm{G}_2$, $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$, and almost quaternion/hyper Hermitian. Within this unified framework, the underlying 4-form naturally determines geometric data that define a string algebroid over the manifold. In particular, it gives rise to a canonical notion of instanton, thereby linking these geometries to gauge-theoretic structures in generalized geometry and heterotic string theory. We further prove that these data induce generalized Ricci-flat metrics. Finally, we examine the main examples in the literature and construct several explicit ones.

Flows of geometric structures II

We advance the general theory of flows of tensorial $\mathrm{H}$-structures, focusing on non-isometric flows and on the case $\mathrm{H}=\mathrm{SU}(m)\subset\mathrm{SO}(2m)$. After developing the relevant $\mathrm{SU}(m)$ algebra, we compare two natural evolutions: the unrestricted negative gradient flow of the intrinsic-torsion energy and a Ricci-harmonic flow. We prove short-time existence and uniqueness for the Ricci-harmonic $\mathrm{H}$-flow, with arbitrary lower-order torsion-quadratic terms, for every closed subgroup $\mathrm{H}\subset\mathrm{SO}(n)$. For groups for which the projection to $\mathfrak{h}^\perp$ defines a $4$-form, including $\{1\}$, $\mathrm{SU}(2)$, $\mathrm{G}_2$, and $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$, we express the negative gradient flow in Ricci-harmonic form up to explicit lower-order torsion terms and prove short-time existence and uniqueness by a modified DeTurck argument. We treat the genuinely different $\mathrm{SU}(m)$ case by a separate principal-symbol computation, proving short-time existence and uniqueness for the unrestricted negative gradient flow of $\mathrm{SU}(m)$-structures. The same computation identifies the natural negative gradient flow of $\mathrm{U}(m)$-structures as a borderline case, which cannot be made strictly parabolic by first-order diffeomorphism gauges. For the modified Ricci-harmonic flow, we derive heat-type evolution equations for the intrinsic torsion, a doubling-time estimate and Shi-type derivative estimates for $(|\mathrm{Rm}|^2+|\nabla T|^2+|T|^4)^{1/2}$, and a finite-time continuation criterion. In dimension six, we translate the formalism into the standard torsion forms of an $\mathrm{SU}(3)$-structure and describe, to highest order, the corresponding family of second-order quasilinear $\mathrm{SU}(3)$-flows.

Asymptotically Z-stable bundles over projective surfaces

We study the existence of asymptotically $Z$-stable (a.Z stable) bundles over polycyclic surfaces. Our choice of polynomial central charge is related to the existence of solutions of the deformed Hermitian--Yang--Mills equations, with vanishing $B$-field, in the large-volume limit. The main result is a technique to construct rank $3$, strictly a.Z-stable bundles as extensions of a line bundle by a $μ$-stable bundle of rank $2$. In particular, this leads to new examples of strictly a.Z-stable bundles over $\mathbb{P}^2$, the product $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$, and the blow-up $\mathrm{Bl}_q\mathbb{P}^2$. We also present an analogue of the Hoppe criterion for the a.Z-stability of vector bundles of rank $2$, which may be of independent interest.

Minimising Willmore Energy via Neural Flow

The neural Willmore flow of a closed oriented $2$-surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is introduced as a natural evolution process to minimise the Willmore energy, which is the squared $L^2$-norm of mean curvature. Neural architectures are used to model maps from topological $2d$ domains to $3d$ Euclidean space, where the learning process minimises a PINN-style loss for the Willmore energy as a functional on the embedding. Training reproduces the expected round sphere for genus $0$ surfaces, and the Clifford torus for genus $1$ surfaces, respectively. Furthermore, the experiment in the genus $2$ case provides a novel approach to search for minimal Willmore surfaces in this open problem.

The exterior derivative and the mean value equality in $\mathbb{R}^n$

This survey revisits classical results in vector calculus and analysis by exploring a generalised perspective on the exterior derivative, interpreting it as a measure of "infinitesimal flux". This viewpoint leads to a higher-dimensional analogue of the Mean Value Theorem, valid for differential $k$-forms, and provides a natural formulation of Stokes' theorem that mirrors the exact hypotheses of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus -- without requiring full $C^1$ smoothness of the differential form. As a numerical application, we propose an algorithm for exterior differentiation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ that relies solely on black-box access to the differential form, offering a practical tool for computation without the need for mesh discretization or explicit symbolic expressions.

Cartan-Khaneja-Glaser decomposition of $SU(2^n)$ via involutive automorphisms

We present a novel algorithm for performing the Cartan-Khaneja-Glaser decomposition of unitary matrices in $SU(2^n)$, a critical task for efficient quantum circuit design. Building upon the approach introduced by Sá Earp and Pachos (2005), we overcome key limitations of their method, such as reliance on ill-defined matrix logarithms and the convergence issues of truncated Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff(BCH) series. Our reformulation leverages the algebraic structure of involutive automorphisms and symmetric Lie algebra decompositions to yield a stable and recursive factorization process. We provide a full Python implementation of the algorithm, available in an open-source repository, and validate its performance on matrices in $SU(8)$ and $SU(16)$ using random unitary benchmarks. The algorithm produces decompositions that are directly suited to practical quantum hardware, with factors that can be implemented near-optimally using standard gate sets.

Neural and numerical methods for $\mathrm{G}_2$-structures on contact Calabi-Yau 7-manifolds

A numerical framework for approximating $\mathrm{G}_2$-structure 3-forms on contact Calabi-Yau manifolds is presented. The approach proceeds in three stages: first, existing neural network models are employed to compute an approximate Ricci-flat metric on a Calabi-Yau threefold. Second, using this metric and the explicit construction of a $\mathrm{G}_2$-structure on the associated 7-dimensional Calabi-Yau link in the 9-sphere, numerical approximations of the 3-form are generated on a large set of sampled points. Finally, a dedicated neural architecture is trained to learn the 3-form and its induced Riemannian metric directly from data, validating the learned structure and its torsion via a numerical implementation of the exterior derivative, which may be of independent interest.

Laplacian coflows of $G_2$-structures on contact Calabi--Yau 7-manifolds

We explore three versions of the Laplacian coflow of $G_2$-structures on circle fibrations over Calabi--Yau 3-folds, interpreting their dimensional reductions to the Kähler geometry of the base. Precisely, we reduce Ansätze for the Laplacian coflow, modified or not by de Turck's trick, both on trivial products $CY^3\times S^1$ and on contact Calabi--Yau 7-manifolds, obtaining in each case a natural modification of the Kähler--Ricci flow.

Flows of SU(2)-structures

This paper initiates a classification programme of flows of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structures on $4$-manifolds which have short-time existence and uniqueness. Our approach adapts a representation-theoretic method originally due to Bryant in the context of $\mathrm{G}_2$ geometry. We show how this strategy can also be used to deduce the number of geometric flows of a given $H$-structure; we illustrate this in the $\mathrm{G}_2$, $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ cases. Our investigation also leads us to derive explicit expressions for the Ricci and self-dual Weyl curvature in terms of the intrinsic torsion of the underlying $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structure. We compute the first variation formulae of all the quadratic functionals in the torsion; these provide natural building blocks for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gradient flows. In particular, our results demonstrate that both the negative gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy of the intrinsic torsion and the Ricci harmonic flow are parabolic after a modified DeTurck's trick.

Flows of geometric structures

We develop an abstract theory of flows of geometric $H$-structures, i.e., flows of tensor fields defining $H$-reductions of the frame bundle, for a closed and connected subgroup $H\subset SO(n)$, on any connected and oriented $n$-manifold with sufficient topology to admit such structures. The first part of the article sets up a unifying theoretical framework for deformations of $H$-structures, by way of the natural infinitesimal action of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ on tensors combined with various bundle decompositions induced by $H$-structures. We compute evolution equations for the intrinsic torsion under general flows of $H$-structures and, as applications, we obtain general Bianchi-type identities for $H$-structures, and, for closed manifolds, a general first variation formula for the $L^2$-Dirichlet energy functional $\mathcal{E}$ on the space of $H$-structures. We then specialise the theory to the negative gradient flow of $\mathcal{E}$ over isometric $H$-structures, i.e., their harmonic flow. The core result is an almost monotonocity formula along the flow for a scale-invariant localised energy, similar to the classical formulae by Chen-Struwe for the harmonic map heat flow. This yields an $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem and an energy gap result for harmonic structures, as well as long-time existence for the flow under small initial energy, relative to the $L^\infty$-norm of initial torsion, in the spirit of Chen-Ding. Moreover, below a certain energy level, the absence of a torsion-free isometric $H$-structure in the initial homotopy class imposes the formation of finite-time singularities. These seemingly contrasting statements are illustrated by examples on flat $n$-tori, so long as $[\mathbb{S}^n,SO(n)/H]$ contains more than one element and the universal cover of $SO(n)/H$ is a sphere; e.g. when $n=7$ and $H=\rm G_2$, or $n=8$ and $H=\rm Spin(7)$.

Coupled $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons

We introduce the coupled instanton equations for a metric, a spinor, a three-form, and a connection on a bundle, over a spin manifold. Special solutions in dimensions $6$ and $7$ arise, respectively, from the Hull--Strominger and the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$ system. The equations are motivated by recent developments in theoretical physics and can be recast using generalized geometry; we investigate how coupled instantons relate to generalized Ricci-flat metrics and also to Killing spinors on a Courant algebroid. We present two open questions regarding how these different geometric conditions are intertwined, for which a positive answer is expected from recent developments in the physics literature by De la Ossa, Larfors and Svanes, and in the mathematics literature on Calabi--Yau manifolds, in recent work by the second-named author with González Molina. We give a complete solution to the first of these problems, providing a new method for the construction of instantons in arbitrary dimensions. For $\operatorname{G}_2$-structures with torsion coupled to $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons, in dimension $7$, we also establish results around the second problem. The last part of the present work carefully studies the approximate solutions to the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$-system constructed by the third and fourth authors on contact Calabi--Yau $7$-manifolds, for which we prove the existence of approximate coupled $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons and generalized Ricci-flat metrics.

A Weitzenböck formula on Sasakian holomorphic bundles

This work seeks to advance the understanding of the smooth structure of the moduli space of self-dual contact instantons (SDCI) on Sasakian 7-manifolds M. A neighborhood of a smooth point of M is locally modeled on the first cohomological group of an elliptic complex (1.4). There is a cohomological obstruction to the smoothness for the moduli space, in terms of a second basic cohomological group, in this paper we study conditions under which this obstruction disappears, by computing a Weitzenböck formula and using a Bochner-type method to obtain a vanishing theorem. Given an SDCI on a Sasakian bundle E, we find sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the obstruction in the positivity of a couple of operators R and F depending on the curvatures of the connection and the Riemann curvature of the Sasakian metric g. In particular, we find that if M is transversely Ricci positive and F positive, the moduli space of SDCI must be smooth. However, in general, the operator F is not positive definite and we describe bundles over the Stiefel manifold for which it is the case. Finally, we show that when the energy of the curvature is less than the first non-zero eigenvalue of RicT the obstruction vanishes.

Machine learning Sasakian and $G_2$ topology on contact Calabi-Yau $7$-manifolds

We propose a machine learning approach to study topological quantities related to the Sasakian and $G_2$-geometries of contact Calabi-Yau $7$-manifolds. Specifically, we compute datasets for certain Sasakian Hodge numbers and for the Crowley-Nördstrom invariant of the natural $G_2$-structure of the $7$-dimensional link of a weighted projective Calabi-Yau $3$-fold hypersurface singularity, for 7549 of the 7555 possible $\mathbb{P}^4(\textbf{w})$ projective spaces. These topological quantities are then machine learnt with high performance scores, where learning the Sasakian Hodge numbers from the $\mathbb{P}^4(\textbf{w})$ weights alone, using both neural networks and a symbolic regressor which achieve $R^2$ scores of 0.969 and 0.993 respectively. Additionally, properties of the respective Gröbner bases are well-learnt, leading to a vast improvement in computation speeds which may be of independent interest. The data generation and analysis further induced novel conjectures to be raised.

Instantons on Sasakian 7-manifolds

We study a natural contact instanton (CI) equation on gauge fields over 7-dimensional Sasakian manifolds, which is closely related both to the transverse Hermitian Yang-Mills (tHYM) condition and the G_2-instanton equation. We obtain, by Fredholm theory, a finite-dimensional local model for the moduli space of irreducible solutions. We derive cohomological conditions for smoothness, and we express its dimension in terms of the index of a transverse elliptic operator. Finally we show that the moduli space of selfdual contact instantons (ASDI) is Kähler, in the Sasakian case. As an instance of concrete interest, we specialise to transversely holomorphic Sasakian bundles over contact Calabi-Yau 7-manifolds, and we show that, in this context, the notions of contact instanton, integrable G_2-instanton and HYM connection coincide.

Harmonic flow of quaternion-Kähler structures

We formulate the gradient Dirichlet flow of $Sp(2)Sp(1)$-structures on $8$-manifolds, as the first systematic study of a geometric quaternion-Kähler (QK) flow. Its critical condition of \emph{harmonicity} is especially relevant in the QK setting, since torsion-free structures are often topologically obstructed. We show that the conformally parallel property implies harmonicity, extending a result of Grigorian in the $G_2$ case. We also draw several comparisons with $Spin(7)$-structures. Analysing the QK harmonic flow, we prove an almost-monotonicity formula, which implies to long-time existence under small initial energy, via $ε$-regularity. We set up a theory of harmonic QK solitons, constructing a non-trivial steady example. We produce explicit long-time solutions: one, converging to a torsion-free limit on the hyperbolic plane; and another, converging to a limit which is harmonic but not torsion-free, on the manifold $SU(3)$. We also study compactness and the formation of singularities.

The heterotic $\rm{G}_2$ system on contact Calabi--Yau $7$-manifolds

We obtain non-trivial solutions to the heterotic $\rm{G}_2$ system, which are defined on the total spaces of non-trivial circle bundles over Calabi--Yau $3$-orbifolds. By adjusting the $S^1$ fibres in proportion to a power of the string constant $α'$, we obtain a cocalibrated $\rm{G}_2$-structure the torsion of which realises an arbitrary constant (trivial) dilaton field and an $H$-flux with nontrivial Chern--Simons defect. We find examples of connections on the tangent bundle and a non-flat $\rm{G}_2$-instanton induced from the horizontal Calabi--Yau metric which satisfy together the anomaly-free condition, also known as the heterotic Bianchi identity. The connections on the tangent bundle are $\rm{G}_2$-instantons up to higher order corrections in $α'$.

Harmonic flow of geometric structures

We give a twistorial interpretation of geometric structures on a Riemannian manifold, as sections of homogeneous fibre bundles, following an original insight by Wood (2003). The natural Dirichlet energy induces an abstract harmonicity condition, which gives rise to a geometric gradient flow. We establish a number of analytic properties for this flow, such as uniqueness, smoothness, short-time existence, and some sufficient conditions for long-time existence. This description potentially subsumes a large class of geometric PDE problems from different contexts. As applications, we recover and unify a number of results in the literature: for the isometric flow of ${\rm G}_2$-structures, by Grigorian (2017, 2019), Bagaglini (2019), and Dwivedi-Gianniotis-Karigiannis (2019); and for harmonic almost complex structures, by He (2019) and He-Li (2019). Our theory also establishes original properties regarding harmonic flows of parallelisms and almost contact structures.

Flows of $\mathrm{G}_2$-structures on contact Calabi--Yau $7$-manifolds

We study the Laplacian flow and coflow on contact Calabi-Yau $7$-manifolds. We show that the natural initial condition leads to an ancient solution of the Laplacian flow with a finite time Type I singularity which is not a soliton, whereas it produces an immortal (though not eternal and not self-similar) solution of the Laplacian coflow which has an infinite time singularity, that is Type IIb unless the transverse Calabi--Yau geometry is flat. The flows in each case collapse (after normalising the volume) to a lower-dimensional limit, which is either $\mathbb{R}$ for the Laplacian flow or standard $\mathbb{C}^3$ for the Laplacian coflow. We also study the Hitchin flow in this setting, which we show coincides with the Laplacian coflow up to reparametrisation of time, and defines an (incomplete) Calabi--Yau structure on the spacetime track of the flow.
