Reconfigurable topological valley-Hall interfaces: Asymptotics of arrays of Dirichlet and Neumann inclusions for multiple scattering in metamaterials

We study two-dimensional periodic metamaterials in which idealised cylindrical inclusions are modelled by boundary conditions. In the scalar time-harmonic setting, the background field satisfies the Helmholtz equation, and high-contrast inclusion limits reduce to Dirichlet or Neumann conditions, with direct analogues in dielectric and acoustic media. By switching the condition assigned to selected inclusions, we break point-group symmetries of the primitive cell and thereby lift symmetry-induced degeneracies in the Floquet--Bloch spectrum of hexagonal and square lattices, opening valley-type band gaps with Berry curvature localised near opposite valleys. To analyse infinite and finite structures within a unified framework, we derive matched-asymptotic point-scatterer approximations for mixed Dirichlet--Neumann arrays. For doubly periodic systems, this yields a finite-dimensional generalised eigenvalue problem for the Floquet--Bloch spectrum; for finite arrays, it yields a generalised Foldy multiple-scattering system. In both hexagonal and square lattices, geometrically identical crystals can realise distinct valley-Hall phases solely through boundary-condition assignment while retaining an overlapping bulk gap. Spatially varying this assignment therefore creates and relocates internal interfaces without altering the underlying geometry, enabling the associated valley-Hall interfacial modes to be repositioned within the same crystal.

Polarisation conversion and optical meron topologies in anisotropic epsilon-near-zero metamaterials

Plasmonic metamaterials provide a flexible platform for light manipulation and polarisation management, thanks to their engineered optical properties with exotic dispersion regimes. Here, we exploit the enhanced spin-orbit coupling induced by the strong anisotropy of plasmonic nanorod metamaterials to control the polarisation of vector vortex beams and generate complex field structures with meron topology. Modifying the degree of ellipticity of the input polarisation, we show how the observed meron topology can be additionally manipulated. Flexible control of the state of polarisation of vortex beams is important in optical manipulation, communications, metrology and quantum technologies.

Mixing Skyrmions and Merons in Topological Quasicrystals of Evanescent Optical Field

Photonic skyrmion and meron lattices are structured light fields with topologically protected textures, analogous to magnetic skyrmions and merons. Here, we report the theoretical existence of mixed skyrmion and meron quasicrystals in an evanescent optical field. Topological quasiperiodic tilings of even and odd point group symmetries are demonstrated in both the electric field and spin angular momentum. These quasicrystals contain both skyrmions and merons of Néel-type topology. Interestingly, the quasiperiodic tilings are in agreement with the observations of quasiperiodic arrangements of carbon nanoparticles in water driven by ultrasound, and pave the way towards engineering hybrid topological states of light which may have potential applications in optical manipulation, metrology and information processing.

On the problem of comparing graded metamaterials

We use a simple effective model, obtained through the application of high-frequency homogenisation, to tackle the fundamental question of how the choice of gradient function affects the performance of a graded metamaterial. This approach provides a unified framework for comparing gradient functions efficiently and in a way that allows us to draw conclusions that apply to a range of different wave regimes. We consider the specific problem of single-frequency localisation, for which the appropriate effective model is a one-dimensional Schrodinger equation. Our analytic results both corroborate those of existing studies (which use either expensive full-field wave simulations or black-box numerical optimisation algorithms) and extend them to other metamaterial regimes. Based on our analysis, we are able to propose a design strategy for optimising monotonically graded metamaterials and offer an explanation for the lack of a universal optimal gradient function.
