A novel time-domain iterative method for a three-dimensional inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problem

This paper concerns the three-dimensional forward and inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problem in the time domain. For the forward problem, a retarded potential formulation discretized by convolution quadrature and Galerkin methods is introduced. By introducing the retarded boundary integral defined on a homothetic surface, we propose a novel time-domain convolution quadrature based iterative method to reconstruct both the shape and location of a rigid obstacle. The retarded integral in the time domain is reformulated into a system of integrals in the s-domain. The resulting s-domain integrals are very fast to compute, as they only involve non-singular integrals over the homothetic surfaces. Moreover, the Fr\'echet derivative with respect to the boundary can be derived straightforwardly. We also prove that the scattered field generated by the homothetic surface converges to the exact field in the time domain. To improve the stability of the inversion algorithm, an incremental truncation technique is proposed, and numerical experiments confirm the effectiveness and robustness of our method.

A highly efficient iterative approach for inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problems in three dimensions

This paper concerns a three-dimensional inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problem from scattered field or phased/phaseless far-field data. Based on the boundary integral defined on a homothetic surface, we propose a highly efficient iterative approach for obstacle reconstruction that completely avoids dealing with any singularity. Here, the injectivity and dense-range property of the Fr\'echet derivative have been proved to ensure the solvability of the linearized equivalent data equation. We also prove that the scattered field generated by the homothetic surface can arbitrarily approximate the exact one. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the superiority and robustness of the proposed approach.

Uniqueness of an inverse cavity scattering problem for the biharmonic wave equation

This paper addresses an inverse cavity scattering problem associated with the biharmonic wave equation in two dimensions. The objective is to determine the domain or shape of the cavity. The Green's representations are demonstrated for the solution to the boundary value problem, and the one-to-one correspondence is confirmed between the Helmholtz component of biharmonic waves and the resulting far-field patterns. Two mixed reciprocity relations are deduced, linking the scattered field generated by plane waves to the far-field pattern produced by various types of point sources. Furthermore, the symmetry relations are explored for the scattered fields generated by point sources. Finally, we present two uniqueness results for the inverse problem by utilizing both far-field patterns and phaseless near-field data.

A novel boundary integral formulation for the biharmonic wave scattering problem

This paper is concerned with the cavity scattering problem in an infinite thin plate, where the out-of-plane displacement is governed by the two-dimensional biharmonic wave equation. Based on an operator splitting, the scattering problem is recast into a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations. A novel boundary integral formulation is proposed for the coupled problem. By introducing an appropriate regularizer, the well-posedness is established for the system of boundary integral equations. Moreover, the convergence analysis is carried out for the semi- and full-discrete schemes of the boundary integral system by using the collocation method. Numerical results show that the proposed method is highly accurate for both smooth and nonsmooth examples.

A spectral boundary integral method for the elastic obstacle scattering problem in three dimensions

In this paper, we consider the scattering of a plane wave by a rigid obstacle embedded in a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium in three dimensions. Based on the Helmholtz decomposition, the elastic scattering problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. A novel system of boundary integral equations is formulated and a spectral boundary integral method is developed for the coupled boundary value problem. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Inverse obstacle scattering for elastic waves in the time domain

This paper concerns an inverse elastic scattering problem which is to determine a rigid obstacle from time domain scattered field data for a single incident plane wave. By using Helmholtz decomposition, we reduce the initial-boundary value problem of the time domain Navier equation to a coupled initial-boundary value problem of wave equations, and prove the uniqueness of the solution for the coupled problem by employing energy method. The retarded single layer potential is introduced to establish the coupled boundary integral equations, and the uniqueness is discussed for the solution of the coupled boundary integral equations. Based on the convolution quadrature method for time discretization, the coupled boundary integral equations are reformulated into a system of boundary integral equations in s-domain, and then a convolution quadrature based nonlinear integral equation method is proposed for the inverse problem. Numerical experiments are presented to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

A fast solver for elastic scattering from axisymmetric objects by boundary integral equations

Fast and high-order accurate algorithms for three dimensional elastic scattering are of great importance when modeling physical phenomena in mechanics, seismic imaging, and many other fields of applied science. In this paper, we develop a novel boundary integral formulation for the three dimensional elastic scattering based on the Helmholtz decomposition of elastic fields, which converts the Navier equation to a coupled system consisted of Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. An FFT-accelerated separation of variables solver is proposed to efficiently invert boundary integral formulations of the coupled system for elastic scattering from axisymmetric rigid bodies. In particular, by combining the regularization properties of the singular boundary integral operators and the FFT-based fast evaluation of modal Green's functions, our numerical solver can rapidly solve the resulting integral equations with a high-order accuracy. Several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm, including geometries with corners at different wave number.

A highly accurate boundary integral method for the elastic obstacle scattering problem

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a rigid obstacle embedded in a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium in two dimensions. In this paper, a novel boundary integral formulation is proposed and its highly accurate numerical method is developed for the elastic obstacle scattering problem. More specifically, based on the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary integral equation with singular kernels. A regularized system is constructed in order to handle the degenerated integral operators. The semi-discrete and full-discrete schemes are studied for the boundary integral system by using the trigonometric collocation method. Convergence is established for the numerical schemes in some appropriate Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments are presented for both smooth and nonsmooth obstacles to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

An inverse acoustic-elastic interaction problem with phased or phaseless far-field data

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic acoustic plane wave by a bounded elastic obstacle which is immersed in a homogeneous acoustic medium. This paper concerns an inverse acoustic-elastic interaction problem, which is to determine the location and shape of the elastic obstacle by using either the phased or phaseless far-field data. By introducing the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equations. The jump relations are studied for the second derivatives of the single-layer potential in order to establish the corresponding boundary integral equations. The well-posedness is discussed for the solution of the coupled boundary integral equations. An efficient and high order Nyström-type discretization method is proposed for the integral system. A numerical method of nonlinear integral equations is developed for the inverse problem. For the case of phaseless data, we show that the modulus of the far-field pattern is invariant under a translation of the obstacle. To break the translation invariance, an elastic reference ball technique is introduced. We prove that the inverse problem with phaseless far-field pattern has a unique solution under certain conditions. In addition, a numerical method of the reference ball technique based nonlinear integral equations is also proposed for the phaseless inverse problem. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methods.

Inverse obstacle scattering problem for elastic waves with phased or phaseless far-field data

This paper concerns an inverse elastic scattering problem which is to determine the location and the shape of a rigid obstacle from the phased or phaseless far-field data for a single incident plane wave. By introducing the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equations. The relation is established between the compressional or shear far-field pattern for the elastic wave equation and the corresponding far-field pattern for the coupled Helmholtz equations. An efficient and accurate Nyström type discretization for the boundary integral equation is developed to solve the coupled system. The translation invariance of the phaseless compressional and shear far-field patterns are proved. A system of nonlinear integral equations is proposed and two iterative reconstruction methods are developed for the inverse problem. In particular, for the phaseless data, a reference ball technique is introduced to the scattering system in order to break the translation invariance. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

A reference ball based iterative algorithm for imaging acoustic obstacle from phaseless far-field data

In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of determining the location and the shape of a sound-soft obstacle from the modulus of the far-field data for a single incident plane wave. By adding a reference ball artificially to the inverse scattering system, we propose a system of nonlinear integral equations based iterative scheme to reconstruct both the location and the shape of the obstacle. The reference ball technique causes few extra computational costs, but breaks the translation invariance and brings information about the location of the obstacle. Several validating numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed inversion algorithm.
